Gitmo guards brag of beatings.»

“Guards at Guantanamo Bay bragged about beating detainees and described it as common practice, a Marine sergeant said in a sworn statement,” AP reports. The Marine described practices such as “hitting the detainee’s head into the cell door” and “punching [them] in the face.”

I wonder if George Bush is as proud of being a “torture president” as he is of being a “war president”. Sad, very sad.

Off topic, I know, but notice that there’s a major hazardous waste plant fire in North Carolina, 17,000 people evacuated - whaddya wanna bet that the Admon tries to pretend it’s terrorists?

I wonder at what point the american people will wake up, stand up, and revolt?

Not when they are deceived into the most heinous of all international actions, war, against an innocent sovereign nation.

Not when their money is pissed away.

Not when a whole CITY is lost due to negligence and indifference.

Not when their representatives are enabling sexual advances upon their children.

Not when their inalienable rights are being stolen.

Not when the moral character of the nation of the whole is being led to depths not thought possible.

No, the american people sit and wait. Waiting for what, I do not know. The only thing left, I guess, is for Dick Cheney himself to come to your house and ass rape your daughter before your very eyes.

Or will “patriotic” americans just accept that as well? I wonder.

i live 20 miles from the fire. It’s not terrorists. just dumb rednecks.

  8. Things Are Outta Hand Says:

The general apathy is very discouraging.

About a year and a half ago, a NY newspaper’s front page had this emblazoned on it, “IRAN NEXT!” and I said to my fellow office-dwellers, “I’m surprised there isn’t a revolution going on! This is crazy!” and the female college student who was temp’ing there at the time said, “Why bother? It won’t make any difference.”

I was very depressed that day.

But yet they’ll vote for the next American Idol!

Is there any college students out there who can cheer me up and tell me that they aren’t apathetic?

  9. WaltTheMan Says:

When America sinks to the same levels of depravity for which we condemned Japan, North Korea, China and Hanoi, there is clearly something severely wrong with our leadership.

In any case compassion is, clearly, not one of their virtues.

When other Americans are dying in the streets from starvation, disease or lack of medicine or shelter and they have to watch it.

I read an article in 1998 in a Russian paper that said that their wouldn’t be another revolution there because people were not dying. It talked about the Bolshevik Revolution and how people were dying from hunger. Same with the French Revolution. Even the original American Revolution. I’m sure there are exceptions, but the main premise does make sense. You aren’t willing to risk your life until you are past the point that you think you’re going to live. If you already think you’re next to die, then what conviction do you need to risk your life?

I think the leaders of the world know this and keep people just beyond that brink…

An even better point… Would explain why they want the Bush regime to leave. Not that we can blame them, after all, we too want the Bush Regime to leave our country…

  15. katy Says:

    i hate when that happens… without explanation…
    “condi… disrupts… iran…” huh???

  16. Things Are Outta Hand Says:

Condi’s plane was delayed leaving Baghdad because supposedly after she got off, and the plane was taxiing, something got “sucked into an engine”.

Which is very odd of course and makes you wonder if they’d taken some fire on the way in.

But - the good thing is that it messed up her plans to bully the UN Security Council into sanctions on Iran.

  17. SouthPaw Says:

I think a lot of people would revolt, if we had someone who we felt we could follow. I know I would.

  18. Badmoodman Says:

#11: um… what happened to condi’s thread??? - - It took off and will be circling for the next 90 minutes while waiting for the insults to stop being hurled.

  19. SouthPaw Says:

15- Something about her circling in the air and not landing caused the meeting to be cut short, so there was a “rushed decision” on I forget what.

    Off to happy hour….

  20. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

It took off and will be circling for the next 90 minutes while waiting for the insults to stop being hurled.

Will 90 minutes be long enough for that?

  21. Badmoodman Says:

#16: “…supposedly after she (Condi) got off, and the plane was taxiing, something got “sucked into an engine”. - - And coincidentally, Ahmed Chalabi was never seen or heard from again.

  22. Things Are Outta Hand Says:

“And coincidentally, Ahmed Chalabi was never seen or heard from again.”

No loss there that’s for damn sure!

  23. hellinabucket Says:

It’s been well over 100 years since an occupying force has won. The invaders have been turned back every time. To truly “win the war” you have to have superior forces along with economical and financial will to pull it off. But above all is you need to have the backing of your own people. This conflict doesn’t have the American’s heart and sole behind it. The story would be different if it were just Afghanistan but including Iraq muddied the water. Trying to do it on the cheap was a gamble that didn’t pay off. How much good money and lives are we going to throw at this problem now. And before any neocon jumps in understand this. We are far too deep into the mess in Iraq to just jump out but we need to stop the bus, kick out th driver and his cronies before we pull back on the road. Oh yeah we’ll get an updated roadmap too, not the one that is collecting dust on Condi’s desk.

  24. katy Says:

thanks for the condi wrap-up and the chuckles!

  25. Disgraceful Says:

    “Al-Qaeda” Does Not Exist

Former Leader of the House of Commons Robin Cook, who admirably resigned in protest of the 2003 Iraq invasion, penned a piece in the London Guardian shortly before his death that shed light on the true genesis of the name.

“Al-Qaida,” states Cook, “literally “the database”, was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians.”

According to the BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares

Al-Qaeda was a name made up in a manhatton court room in january 2001 as a name for group that attacked the Trade centre and a way of creating a flase name ” bit like using Mafia” basically to scare people

I am glad you people are catching up with this issue! Only 6 months ago if you mentioned the word torture you were banned by this blog. What changed your mind? New orders? From who?

  27. she's back Says:

Looks like your past actions will hunt you back for a while longer!…..Unbelieveble don’t confuse the revolutions done by the people for the people with the revolutions done by some people working for foreigner countries, both the french and the russian revolutions were British operations to eliminate the king and the Zar, ok girl? Good!

  29. Exley Says:

I wonder why so many Americans hate the prisoners at Guantanamo?

Oh, right…Probably has something to do with that 16 acre hole in the ground in lower Manhattan.

Besides, this statement is nothing more than hearsay. Has little or no evidentiary value.

  30. Zooey Says:

This is who we are now. Are we proud?

  31. Zooey Says:

    Santo alert — #27 & #28

  32. Marie+Antoniette Says:

Exley your timing is perfect, but your blaming is so wrong!!! Try again , perhaps DC!

  33. Marie+Antoniette Says:

    Larisa where is Santo?

  34. Amstrong Says:

    Somewhere over the rain-bow!

  35. Stating+the+Obvious Says:

Exley wants to quickly dismiss this marine’s statement as “hearsay”. And in a courtroom, such would have legal basis and I would support that categorization. That is, until such time as “facts” were presented, like pictures or something. Then Exley can get to the more asinine side of things and start defending the actions as “fraternity pranks” or other such morally absurd justifications.

Yet, Exley does not realize how hypocritical she/he is. She/he cries “hearsay” when the information is damning to his political heroes. Yet when a drunk serial liar (curveball) is the single source for the claims of Iraq’s WMD stockpiles, Exley is more than happy to claim that information worthy enough to kill 100,000’s of people, including american citizens.

Gosh Exley, you are a “patriot”. Did you get the KY jelly for when Dick Cheney comes over tonight or will you let him take your daughter au-natural?

  36. Amstrong Says:

Zooey take a pill! You must be allucinating again with this ghost!

  37. C I D Says:

Please not again, thank you SALON!!!…..sorry shalom!

  38. WhiffleballTony Says:

That’s sick as hell. I knew a guy who joined the marines just so he could do that stuff, so I guess I shouldn’t be so suprised that there are people doing it.

  39. C I D Says:

If you thought Little League parents were sometimes overly-exciteable now, picture a disputed call becoming a re-enactment of the seige on Fallujah, complete with collateral damage.

  41. Bluestocking Says:

Anyone still believe Bush’s story that the abuses at Abu Ghraib were an isolated incident perpetrated by a few “bad apples”? Even if they were then (which I for one very much doubt), they sure aren’t now…

  42. ForTruth Says:

That’s funny I was thinking of Santo earlier today. I was wondering if he/she ever got that nap?

Oh, right…Probably has something to do with that 16 acre hole in the ground in lower Manhattan.

Ok, Exley, I know that you are capable of intelligent thought. So try it this time. Where shall I start. There is no proof that these people had anything to do with 9/11. As a matter of fact it is unlikely since they would have been brought to trial and put to death a long time ago. Muddying the waters is the fact that the Pakistanis and certain Afghan warlords sold people to the US claiming they were terrorists. Somehow I don’t think an Afghan warlord is a credible source. And another thing, is beating people you don’t know justice, considering they have no right to a trial according to the big Bitch (Bush) we will never know what evidence we have of their complicity. I am glad you are comfortable with the beatings and the murders of people that the government thinks might be dangerous. It makes ME a bit uneasy.

  52. DIGOS Says:

……that 16 acre hole in the ground in lower Manhattan……left and created by demilition charges!!! Don’t you ever forget it Exley.
