BREAKING: Key Rove Aide Resigns From White House Over Abramoff Scandal

ralstonnew.jpgSusan Ralston, Karl Rove’s key aide in the White House, submitted her resignation today “in the wake of congressional report that listed hundreds of contacts between disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the White House.” (Read the letter.)A recent House Government Reform Committee report highlighted her role in the Abramoff corruption network:

[The report] singled out Ralston — Rove’s assistant and Abramoff’s former employee — who was lobbied 69 times, the most contacts with any individual named in the report. She also received numerous tickets to concerts and sporting events.

“Her role in brokering requests to Rove from her former boss raises questions … about some of her activities,” the release said.

Some background on Ralston:

– She worked at two lobbying firms with Abramoff prior to joining the West Wing
– Jack Abramoff recommended her hiring to Karl Rove
– She had testified in the Valerie Plame leak investigation
– She once said she was “involved in much of what goes on at the White House

White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said, “We support her decision and consider the matter closed.” The White House may consider the case closed, but Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and others believe serious questions remain, including “whether officials accepted items like concert tickets and whether they reported them on financial disclosure forms.”

UPDATE: Waxman issued a statement, stating:

It looks like the White House is trying to make Susan Ralston the scapegoat. … It is ludicrous for the White House to say it considers the review of Committee report “complete” when it has not provided answers to any of the most important questions involving Mr. Mehlman and other senior White House officials.

On the evening of 6 November 1963, two days after her 17th birthday, Laura Welch failed to stop her Chevy sedan at a stop sign and smashed into a Corvair being driven by a school chum, Michael Douglas, also 17. Laura and her passenger, Judy Dykes, were treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital, where they learned that Douglas had died from his injuries. No police charges were filed, apparently, but paperwork from the accident is missing or unclear and the details of the incident are a bit of a mystery.

Wow. Driving a Corvair in the vicinity of Laura Bush — the guy didn’t have a chance.

zooey, i think you have to consider all the circumstances around that accident… small town… 60s… “nice kids”… that’s how things were back then… unless it was obvious negligence or recklessness… and even then…

small towns are like that… still sad that the kids are so bored they go “riding around” as something to do…

the details of that accident may never come out – or, it may be just as in the news reports… but a corvair doesn’t have much of a chance getting rammed with a sedan…
    .

  68. Zooey says:

    Thanks katy,

don’t you wonder if those girls are ashamed also… i know they run in the crowd that will never ask anything serious of them, but they still have to see what a mess he’s made… ehh… maybe not…

  70. WaltTheMan says:

I traded in my Corvair for a 1963 Karman Ghia for $140. The only reason I got that much was because the tires only had 120 miles on them and the gas tank was almost full. I ditched the thing in Delaware after experiencing carbon monoxide fatigue while returning from Christmas vacation (College) from NJ to Texas. The ER doctor told me that the level of CO in my blood was, in all respects, potentially fatal. Gasoline heaters are not advisable in a car.

  71. katy says:

walt – which car did you “ditch”? … and literally? as in an accident? or get rid of?…
“gasoline heaters” even sounds like an accident waiting to happen…

    #71 – katy,
I ditched the Corvair. I was lucky enough to pull into a a toll station where all Hell broke loose when I said I was woozey. They thought I was a DUI at first.

  73. doug says:

Ralston’s letter says “I have been moved by your compassion toward others.” My take is that she is dubious about whether Bush will come through on a pardon. She also knows that she may now feel very preasured by investigators to reveal more than Bushco would like. She also knows with the information that she has that Bush might not be there to hand out pardons by that time she needs one. She is in tight spot.

What do you do in her case: make a plea bargain and mia culpa, or hang out to dry in hope that you will be pardoned. It will be interesting what she reveals and how soon? Timing is everything. Choosing a mea culpa usually will incurr some you-a- culpas, too. I would like to know what she perceives as her risk in choosing a mea culpa, that goes, above and beyond a prison sentence?

  74. doug says:

Katy I am just thinking how much you could have got for that Karman Ghia today. It would be have been even more profitable though to have just drained the gas tank and kept the gas in a gas can then today you’ld be rolling in the doe!

As in ALL Neo-Con cabal procedures ALA Skull and Bones, the group holds some sort of sexual or other nefarious scecret over the individual members, thereby allowing for group sway of the individuals. In Skull and Bones it is reported that individuals are forced to masturbate in a coffin and then some with Geronomo’s skull (maybe cum in it, who knows) But there always seems to be some law or moral code that is broken and then that forces the individual to be complicit with the group. It is truly a sick and traitorous mind think that happens in these groups. Skull and bones, Freemasons, etc. They are all Neo-Con crap.

The first indication that something was amiss was the near silence. Usually when I was in the vicinity of the Speaker’s office there was a regular din. There are so many that rely upon The Speaker daily. Also so many go to The Speaker for advice, even just for a bit of inspiration. I became aware of hushed voices and then a clatter of things upon the floor. He had literally dropped what he was doing! I heard him exclaim “What? No. No! The rascal! Not while I’m Speaker! This will not stand!” He grabbed the bible from its place at hand and set forth. The crowd parted before him at the sight of the determination in his eyes, his knit brow. He marched like a righteous lion in the defense of all that is good, across the way, elbowed aside some shady types, forced his way through the door, into that dark den of sin that was Foley’s office, snatched the phone from the texting man’s hand and, hurled it across the room to shatter in a thousand pieces. He could be heard from one end of Pennsylvania Avenue to the other thundering, “Be gone with you and your dark ways Sir! You’ll not mark or defile this noble body of sevants to the public good! I am aghast an appalled!” and, amid thanks and congratulations, growing as he passed, into cheers and shouts of admiration, humbly returned to his office, our champion, House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Ralston May Be More than a Footnote

By Phil Tajitsu Nash, Dec 16, 2005

As of last Friday afternoon, one of the hottest questions on the D.C. political gossip circuit was whether Filipina American Susan Ralston was still on the job at the White House as a top assistant to both President Bush and his closest aide, Karl Rove. Cristina D.C. Pastor and Rita Gerona-Adkins of the Philippine News beat the nation’s daily papers to a scoop on Dec. 7, by reporting that Ralston was leaving the White House to work at the Commerce Department.

Her departure could be interpreted as bad news for Rove, both because of her legendary organizational skills, and because her testimony to the grand jury investigating the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson’s name to the public could cause legal difficulties for Rove.

Only one week before, reports had been leaked that Ralston had been recalled to testify before Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, in his investigation of whether or not Rove tried to cover up some of his conversations with reporters.

Ralston testified this time that Rove specifically instructed her to not log a July 2003 phone call that Rove had with a Time magazine reporter.

In her first grand jury testimony in August, Ralston, who screened all calls to Rove, said the call was not logged because the reporter had phoned in through the White House switchboard, and then transferred to Rove’s office (instead of calling directly).

    http://news.asianweek.com/news/view_article.html?articl...

I’ll see if I can find the other reference

    Edit to add:

In this week’s print edition, it was reported that a source close to Ralston said she had moved to the Commerce Department. The reason for her move, according to the source, was “too much pressure” on the job.

A Commerce department spokesman said it would not issue a statement on the report.

Reports are that the Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald may again ask Ralston to appear before another grand jury looking into the Plame matter.

As Rove’s deputy, Ralston is responsible for managing the activities of the Office of the Senior Adviser, including areas related to policy, strategic planning, political affairs, public liaison, and intergovernmental efforts of the White House. Her bio says she is also responsible for the development and production of presidential and major surrogate events.

One of her biggest tasks was providing coordination between the White House and the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004.

    http://www.philippinenews.com/news/view_article.html?ar...

This Article is About the Plame Scandal, But Mentions Abramoff

Susan B. Ralston, 38, has worked as an assistant and side-by-side adviser to Karl Rove since 2001, helping manage his e-mail, meetings and phone calls from her perch near his office in the West Wing. That has made her an important witness in the CIA leak investigation, as the special prosecutor has sought to determine whether Mr. Rove misled investigators about his contacts with reporters about Valerie Wilson, the undercover operative whose identity was made public in 2003.

Ms. Ralston is also entangled in another political scandal: the case of Jack Abramoff, the Republican lobbyist, who employed her in the same frontline capacity during a stretch of time that is now under criminal investigation.

Ms. Ralston is not considered a suspect in either case, and several close colleagues say it is by sheer accident that she has been swept up in both investigations. Lawyers involved with the two cases say no other person besides Ms. Ralston has played a pivotal role in each one. She has appeared at critical junctures in both: it was Ms. Ralston who patched through a phone call from Matt Cooper, the reporter for Time magazine, to Mr. Rove on the day in July 2003 that they discussed Mrs. Wilson, then known by her maiden name, Valerie Plame. And Ms. Ralston, while in Mr. Abramoff’s employ, drafted a memorandum about his suites at local arenas, which he used to entertain clients and public officials who have since gotten in trouble for accepting his favors.

Ms. Ralston has been interviewed by investigators in the Abramoff case, which is examining Mr. Abramoff’s work on behalf of Indian tribes and other lobbying interests, as well as his complicated financial arrangements. She worked for him, first at the firm Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds and then at the firm Greenberg Traurig, before she moved to the White House early in President Bush’s first term.

Ms. Ralston has also testified at least twice before the grand jury in the leak case.

Time to swiftboat Karl Rove, and get him to resign, and to leave Washington forever!

  82. plunger says:

If the definition of “terrorism” includes threatening to cause harm to the
population – to achieve political gain, Karl Rove is the number one terrorist on earth.
Put Susan Ralston under oath and ask her how many terror alerts have been
intentional false alarms designed to change the subject or “bury the lead.”

When the recent London False Alarm caused every television in the US to
feature the headline “TERROR IN THE SKIES,” it was done with the specific intent
to bury two other stories that broke hours later…that just happened to be about Israel:

The AIPAC (Franklin) spy trial was NOT thrown out of court &
US sailor, Ariel Weinmann, was arrested for transferring submarine secrets to Israel.

Considering Israel’s nuclear-capable sub is about to unload on Iran, radio silence was required.

No one heard these two stories, because the media was screaming about a nonexistent threat.

    IRAN WAR PLAN EXPOSED!

PREPARE FOR THE SINKING OF A U.S. AIRCRAFT CARRIER –
    The USS Enterprise – CVN-65!

The existence of a hideous plan to sacrifice a U.S. Aircraft Carrier as a
pretext for war with Iran is presently being uncovered!

The Hal Turner Show has been told that within the next five (5) weeks,
the United States will “suffer” a missile attack upon the aircraft carrier
USS Enterprise, presently on patrol near the Persian Gulf. This attack
will appear to be from numerous “Silkworm” and/or “Sunburn” missiles
which will sink the vessel and kill most of the 5,000 crew onboard.

The “attack” will be blamed on Iran and thus provide the Bush
Administration with an excuse to go to war with that nation.

The Hal Turner Show has learned that the missiles used to attack
the USS Enterprise will not be fired from or by Iran, but rather will
be a “false flag operation” made to LOOK as though Iran carried out the attack!

The USS Enterprise is the worlds first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
It was Commissioned in 1961 and is due to be decommissioned in
2014 or 2015. The ship was selected to be the “victim” of this “attack” due to its age.

THOSE PLANNING THE ATTACK ARE INSIDE THE U.S. AND ISRAELI
GOVERNMENTS and view the loss of the Enterprise crew as a necessary
sacrifice to induce Americans to support war against Iran. Put bluntly,
the ship and crew are to be cannon fodder.

I am being fed more information and expect to be able to name names
as to who is behind this plan. Check back often.

Aircraft carrier sunk in Gulf of Mexico to create artificial reef
    Updated 5/17/2006 4:38 PM ET

IN THE GULF OF MEXICO (AP) — As hundreds of veterans looked on
solemnly, Navy divers blew holes in a retired aircraft carrier and
sent the 888-foot USS Oriskany to the bottom of the sea Wednesday,
forming the world’s largest deliberately created artificial reef.

Clouds of brown and gray smoke rose in the sky after more than
500 pounds of plastic explosives went off. The rusted hulk took
about 45 minutes to slip beneath the waves, about four hours faster than predicted.

VIDEO: Navy ship sunk to create reef

Korean and Vietnam War veterans aboard charter boats watched
from beyond a one-mile safety perimeter as the “Mighty O” went
down in 212 feet of water, about 24 miles off Pensacola Beach.

Lloyd Quiter of North Collins, N.Y., who served four tours on the
    ship in Vietnam, wept.

“I’m a little stunned. It’s a little hard to take,” he said.

AND WHY DID THEY FEEL THE NEED FOR THE DRESS REHEARSAL?

BECAUSE WHEN THEY TRIED IT A YEAR EARLIER, IT TOOK 25 DAYS TO
SINK THE USS AMERICA WITH HIGH EXPLOSIVES!

USS America 1048-ft aircraft carrier sunk off North Carolina
Powered by CYBER DIVER News Network

NORTH CAROLINA (22 May 2005) — The retired aircraft carrier
USS America is on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, sunk by the
Navy in a series of explosive tests that upset some veterans.

The 84,000-ton, 1,048-foot warship that served the Navy for
32 years rests about 60 miles off the coast and more than 6,000
feet down, according to Pat Dolan, a spokeswoman for Naval Sea Systems Command.

She did not give a location, but the Navy previously said the
explosions would take place off North Carolina.

With the country (intentionally?) distracted by a sex scandal, and Rove’s
REAL October Surprise imminent, it’s time to shift the focus back to Iran.
The ONLY thing that would justify the cancellation of elections and the
declaration of Martial Law would be a “Nuclear Crisis.” The only thing
that will prevent Bush’s entire cabinet from going to prison is the cancellation of elections.

A FALSE FLAG attack on a US Naval vessel would be declared the equivalent
of an attack on US soil. This would “justify” Israel attacking Iran
with Sub-launched nukes. Keep in mind, both the sinking of the US vessel and
the purported retaliatory strike could all come from one Israeli sub. As
described above, it’s tough to sink an aircraft carrier. Apparently the only
way to ensure that there are no witnesses (see USS Liberty incident) is
to vaporize it with a mini-nuke. Did we send any to Israel in the recent delivery?

The “terrorists” are in the White House – and run the Propaganda machinery.
What did Ralston and Abramoff know about false terror alerts, and when did they know it?
How many other Republicans know that the terror threats are MANUFACTURED?
How many others know that 9/11 was an inside job that Cheney ran through NORAD?
How many know that GHW Bush is the ACTUAL President, and everything we are being
put through is specifically designed to cover the trail of his own criminality?

Assume that nearly every Congressman and Senator is being blackmailed. Once you
see the ability of Israel (Comverse) to wiretap every phone, and realize that only
men of low moral character are allowed to enter the political arena (through the
AIPAC filter), it becomes crystal clear how the US Congress was effectively neutered.

The truth is the only cure for blackmail. Expose it all…URGENTLY.

It’s time for the US Navy to step forward, and neutralize the Israeli sub and stop
    this madness.

Exley. You’re right, she’s cute. Clinton would have been all over that.

    RICE KNEW.

With every passing day, in every conceivable way, every 9/11 conspiracy theory ever posited looks closer to the truth than any story told by this administration.

Rice not only knew for a fact it was coming, she called her friend Willy Brown to warn him not to fly.

She failed to call the rest of America. Even more criminal, she failed to call the head of WTC security to alert him to evacuate the second tower. She knew for a FACT that another plane was on the way.

Are there enough lamp posts around the White House to hang all of the members of the Bush Cabinet who had foreknowledge of 9/11?

If not, I’d like to propose a funding requests for more lamp posts…and plenty of rope.

    THEY ALL KNEW.

    Hang’em high!

Karl needs a conspicuously hot “beard” hanging around his office, so no one catches on to the fact that he is Jeff Guckert’s #1 White House Client. No doubt her replacement will be another petite female from a culture that values female subservience and obedience. Malkin, anyone?

  88. paul says:

Malkin has the subtance to occasionally disagree with her party; do you?

  89. 'sconset says:

Paul (#88) Malkin is a skank with no integrity, principles or “values.” She is a bombastic bitch and she is in bed with the Administration. I wouldnn’t give her the time of day, or her hideous writings. Wonkette, kicked her ass all over the blog last Friday (9/29) and she was furious about it.

Rove, Ralston, et al., are going to get their just punishment–it is just a matter of time. Revenge is a dish best served cold!
