Jailed ex-Rep. Duke Cunningham has written a vitriolic “error-laden” letter to the journalists who exposed his crimes. “My first sin each night is the failure to forgive the [San Diego Union Tribune]. Not just coverage but the brutal two and three pages each week that has nearly destroyed me and my family,” he wrote. Notes TPMMuckraker’s Justin Rood: “I imagine the letter was difficult for the reporters to read — blinded, as they were, by the light glancing off the Pulitzer prizes they won by helping land Duke in jail.”
Didn’t they stumble onto him by way of a “lifestyle audit?” The UT also endorsed him for re-election many times, so I wouldn’t ascribe any undue praise to their journalism. The UT was and is a conservative rag, useful only to the derelicts who line their shoes and clothes with it for protection against the cold (and it does get cold at night in Sandy Eggo).

October 7th, 2006 at 2:43 pmhttp://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/bux/index.jsp
Butner looks more like a resort than Prison.
October 7th, 2006 at 2:51 pmWhat kind of punishment is this?
Shouldn’t Cunningham be inm Arizona sporting pink panties??
Spoken like a true reichwinger. It’s always someone else’s fault.
October 7th, 2006 at 2:53 pmBoo freakin Hoo, and by the way…
October 7th, 2006 at 2:58 pmLights Out, criminals!
October 7th, 2006 at 2:58 pm
Is he serving in a prison with other much larger inmates who long for intimate companionship from a former congressman? I think he could become Randy “Duchess” Cunningham to some lucky inmate.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:05 pmYou gotta love that whole “If you guys hadn’t caught me I wouldn’t be here” mentality. There is one and only one reason why you’re where you are right now, Mr. Cunningham, and that’s because our society has decided that people who did the kinds of things you admitted doing should be made to spend time in a place like the one you’re in. And you knew all that before you started doing those things. You have no one but yourself to blame for your predicament. Deal with it, like all the other inmates!
October 7th, 2006 at 3:14 pmNope. I still don’t forgive you.
Maybe it’s because I’m not a Christian, or maybe because you write, “I am human not an animal to keep whipping,” and I’m not into animal whipping.
If it’s any consolation, Hastert forgives you.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:16 pmHis first sin each night is the failure to forgive. What’s his second sin?
October 7th, 2006 at 3:20 pm1st Step to Recovery, Duke –
ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS
October 7th, 2006 at 3:23 pmI was really disheartened to watch the History Channel special on Air Combat Dogfights realizing a real authentic Ace was sitting in the federal Pen for being a greedy bastard. I think he is a disgrace to the uniformed services and quite the negative role model to boot. Especially fighter pilots.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:24 pmBUTNER LOW FCI NC 1,296 inmates
[more like vacationers=]
It’s a low, and apparently pretty nice, security facility. I doubt Cunningham has to worry about getting his salad tossed..
October 7th, 2006 at 3:28 pmShag, I don’t think it’s so much it’s some one else’s fault as much as the arrogance of “Don’t you know what I did for my country?” mentality. Again I think he reinforces that fighter pilot, here kiss my ring attitude, in the worst ways.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:32 pmwhy cant republican’s ever take responsibility for what they do? its always someone else’s fault…unbelievable!
October 7th, 2006 at 3:34 pmI guess things aren’t going too well for the Democracy Rapist in the big house.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:37 pmYou just have to love that Republican “Personal Responsibility” these days.
October 7th, 2006 at 3:48 pmIt’s just as good as their “Family Values” and “Financial Responsibility”, not to mention their “Dignity & Honor”.
aww… poor fella!
October 7th, 2006 at 3:55 pmNice. He blames his problems on the media reporting on him so frequently, not on the fact that HE TOOK $2M+ IN BRIBES. What a jacka$$. I hope he rots in there.
October 7th, 2006 at 4:07 pmWhy are Cons always bottoms in Prison?
They like to talk tough and act like Maverick businessmen but why is it these CON(victs) always end up the biggest cum guzzling queens in prison?
I have worked in corrections for over 12 years now and see this all the time.
Repressed sexuality? Masochists?
October 7th, 2006 at 4:17 pmCOLD HARD FACT:
“Cunningham pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy and tax evasion charges and admitted accepting more than $2.4 million in bribes in return for helping defense contractors secure federal business. ”
His name, his work, his existence shall be uttered no more.
October 7th, 2006 at 4:21 pmYeah, it was the newspapers that ruined Dukie. And I guess those same newspapers when they report that a sports team loses a game are responsible for that loss.
Duke Cunningham, fortunately, yet unfortunately, will have a lot more time to write letters.
October 7th, 2006 at 4:57 pmThis clown belongs in jail. No wonder he is a Repugnant. There are none of them, from Bush on down who has the guts or backbone to accept responsibility for their own actions. They never learned the lesson in a basic ethics class that when you make a choice, you choose the consequences. What a wonderful example to our youth, all of these poor excuses for human beings are. The Congressional Pages have seen this close-up. Not only should they lose this election big time, they should never again return to power until the lesson is learned that this is no way for a true, patriotic American acts. These are our homegrown terrorists.
October 7th, 2006 at 6:01 pmOnly two words for him….See Tyrone?
October 7th, 2006 at 6:42 pmI agree that this country has a horses ass media.
October 7th, 2006 at 7:43 pmToo bad.
October 7th, 2006 at 7:58 pmSeems “Top Gun” doesn’t have anything left to shoot but blanks.
One down, too many to count to go.
Hah! DARVO the newspapers for doing their job in explosing his criminal behavior – now that’s quite and original one. Where does his bud, Kathy Harris, fit into all of this?? Saw a great editorial on her scam of a campaign today in which they called her a “sleazy Avon lady” – quite good.
October 7th, 2006 at 8:51 pmDuke must be having problems making friends in prison.
Waaah. :(
October 7th, 2006 at 9:01 pmWell, my heart goes out for him…. I think I will send him a cake with a rope inside with instructions on what to do with it….. This will make room for DeLay…..
October 7th, 2006 at 9:16 pmLOL that cracks me up. This guy is scum. How did he ever even remotely get elected? What’s wrong with the world when people like him get chosen to represent the public? Cripes. Well, at least his wife is safe from being abused while he’s put away.
October 7th, 2006 at 11:58 pmOK now, let’s be fair. He did once apologize and even cry at a press conference. Obviously he still has plenty of soul searching to do because he seems to have gotten two of the reactions reversed. Blame others is supposed to be before apology, not after. Give him time, afterall he has plenty of that now. HA!
October 8th, 2006 at 12:35 amI believe that Mark Foley should be put into the jail cell with Duke Cunningham > let them fight it out over who becomes the other’s bitch > lol.
October 8th, 2006 at 3:29 amRecall that Cunningham was held up by koolaid drinkers as another example that Republicans, unlike Democrats, have the character to resign when faced with scandal, taking responsibility for their actions. Sound familiar? Mark Foley ring a bell? Cunningham professed innocence until he was unambiguously nailed. Same for Foley. Cunningham then resigned and professed that he had found God. Foley resigned and professed that he had found alcoholism. Two dirtbags cut from the same cloth. Now Cunningham is whining that he’s been wronged – proving he never accepted responsibility and that the God thing was a dodge. By the way, his wife is equally a disgusting pig and ought to be in jail too, but she’s getting off easy.
As for the Union-Tribune, yes it is an unapologetic Republican rag that fell over itself for years supporting Cunningham and endorsing him against more competent and honest opposition. Regardless of his politics, he was always an embarrasment in Washington, but they kept lapping his butt anyway. They also endorse all the other nutjobs from California, like Duncan Hunter and Darryl Issa.
Fact is, they did not break the story on Cunningham. It was broken by the parent news service. Overnight, the Union-Tribune suddenly became righteous regarding Cunningham and took the credit for breaking the story as if they are some kind of guardians for America.
It’s quite a joke, really.
By the way, the front page headline in the Union-Tribune last week stated “Sandal Rocks Washington Politicians”. Either they don’t have a clue how to proofread their newspaper, or they’ve given new meaning to political flip-flops.
October 8th, 2006 at 4:45 am“My first sin each night is the failure to forgive the [San Diego Union Tribune]. ”
Poor Duke. I would be pissed too, if I was getting my fudge packed every now and then by some big, muscle-bound horny con.
October 8th, 2006 at 8:53 amI find it very odd that Duke has such an obsession that he sits in prison dashing off letters to newspapers. Doesn’t he have some books to read or something? Doesn’t he have to spend time warding off enemies inside the jail, which I’m sure he has managed to make after hearing of this weird behaviour? Doesn’t he have some law books to pour over or weight lifting to do? What a waste of perfectly good jail time. You give and give and give to these people and look how they act.
October 8th, 2006 at 9:28 amOhhhh, I see … it’s the NEWSPAPERS fault! Damn that freedom of the press! Gee, if it wasn’t for the newspapers reporting on illegal crimes committed by those elected to protect us, we, the public, wouldn’t be getting so upset and we could just leave these politicians do do their jobs.
I’ll shut-up now, like a good citizen, and go and cancel my subscription to my newspaper.
October 8th, 2006 at 10:11 amI thought the Dukester was sorry?
October 8th, 2006 at 12:17 pmTHE PREREQUISITES TO BE A GOP WHORE:
Pedophiles- Foley (and maybe Hastert, who looks like a pervert)
Untalented ex-pols with dead girls in his office who think they can do better in the media- Joey Scarbourough
Bribery- Duck Cunningham, Abramhoff, Delay
Flipflopper- McCain, Snowe, Guiliani
Drunk- Bush and his wife
Drug addict- Bush
Murderers- The entire Bush Admininstration as well as those who promote or suck up to him.
Lousy Shots- Dickless Cheney
Black Republicans who forget the recent GOP history as back as last century
was anything but kind to African-Americans-Lynn Swann, Richard Parsons, Robert Johnson, and of course, Condi.
Oh, and I’m African-American by the way. And not a GOP Whore. ;)
GOP gays who won’t fight for gay rights but are self-hating-Mary Cheney
Self-hating women who can’t have what real women have- Michelle Malkin and the ultimate whore: (M)Ann Coulter.
Religious figures who use’s God’s name to do the worst that God would not approve of- James Dobson, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Rev. Moon.
That’s what anyone has to be a GOP Whore.
Any Questions?
Those are the people who represent
Dr
October 8th, 2006 at 2:22 pmCriminals get what they deserve Mr Cunningham and you are no exception. Enjoy your stay.
October 8th, 2006 at 6:04 pmThanks for reminding the voters about your incarceration just before the election. I wonder which Democrat orchestrated this one.
*snark*
