Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA) has repeatedly insisted that he never worked with fallen lobbyist Jack Abramoff:
I met the guy two or three times in my whole life — he never once lobbied me on anything.
ThinkProgress has obtained Abramoff’s billing records (HERE), which show that the lobbyist personally spoke with Pombo on Sept. 10, 1996 and Nov. 21, 1996. On 11 other occasions in 1996 and 1997, Abramoff’s staff met with either Pombo or his staff.
Two days after the first meeting on Sept. 10, Abramoff gave Pombo $500. The congressman eventually received a total of more than $35,000 from Abramoff and his Native American tribal clients. $27,000 of that money came from Abramoff’s client the Mashpee Wampanoag of Massachusetts, “which received federal recognition from a bill Pombo passed through the [House Resources] committee in 2004.”
Pombo’s spokesman is insisting that these billing records are “greatly inflated,” but they nevertheless indicate that Pombo’s office was contacted — and perhaps influenced — by Abramoff. Pombo’s committee, the House Resources Committee, had sole jurisidiction over the Mariana Islands, one of Abramoff’s client that he overcharged. Despite repeated requests from Rep. George Miller (D-CA) to investigate Abramoff’s dealings, Pombo has refused to do anything.
(Say No To Pombo has more.)
Gee, Abramoff get’s busted, joins the Indicted Tabernacle Choir and suddenly not a single Republican knows Jack…
Goper’s Lament

October 12th, 2006 at 10:10 amAhhhh, the long arm of truth is extending a warm welcome to Pombo.
October 12th, 2006 at 10:19 amHere’s a finger to go along with the arm, Pombo.
More dirty money in Republican hands. Had enough? Vote Democratic. Then once we gain control of congress, pass REAL campaign reform and redistrict the states realistically. Time for good government in this country again. Republicans had many years to give it to us and failed, why not give the Democrats a shot?
October 12th, 2006 at 10:20 amJust who is this corrupt puke? The Abramoff scam is small potatoes for this weasel. He is more than just another California Republican who uses his office to line his pockets:
Between 2000 and 2004, Pompo used his campaign and PAC funds to pay his brother $272,000, and his wife (between 2003 and 2004) $85,000. In that 2003-04 campaign, he paid more than $217,000 to his family members.
Pombo and his family rented an RV in the summer of 2003 and spent two weeks on vacation. The 5,000-mile trip included stops in the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Joshua Tree, Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and other parks. The $4,935 cost of the rental was charged to the federal government.
More recently, an Alaskan oil services company under federal investigation in connection with allegations of influence peddling has contributed nearly $18,000 to Pombo.
And that is only the tip of the iceberg for this slick-assed republican crook.
October 12th, 2006 at 10:23 amThere is bigger news than this guy. How come this site is not showing this story –
“Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn’t personally owned the property for three years, property deeds show.”
Another corrupt Democrat is going to go down soon – ROTFL
read about it -> http://apnews.myway.com/article/20061011/D8KMO6NG0.html

He would be joining which corrupt Democrats now? Jefferson? Fishy, but still there. Delay (R)? Indicted and resigned. Cunningham (R)? Imprisoned. DeWine (R)? Resigned facing indictment.
I read the article and it looks like the deals are alleged to be unethical. In that case, he should be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee. If you’re anti-Reid you had better hope that the Senate version has a lot more teeth than the House one, which hadn’t even bothered to meet in recent years until La Cage aux Foley.
Just to be clear, what the republicans I’ve listed above are alleged to have don e (or in one case, confessed to have done) is illegal. Kind of a difference. Unless you want to put Hastert’s buy a property–use his influence to get a road built past the property–sell the property for massive profit scheme on the list, too.
October 12th, 2006 at 11:10 amI would love it if this guy’s constituents paid attention to the trail of corruption following him. They don’t. He has the district next to mine & every time he comes up. the local press acts like he’s gods gift to them.
His stance and actions trying to gut the EPA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Natl Park & Forest projects alone should clue them in that he is one sick mother******. Makes me embarrased live so close to him. He’s as dirty as they come. His family owns a large Real Estate firm (Pombo Real Estate) that specializes in turning farms and ranches into subdivisions. Paving over the valley on farm at a time….yet he still tries to act like he’s a rancher and “one of them”. Get a clue, voters and Ag people, this guy has his own interests ahead of yours.
October 12th, 2006 at 11:10 amThis guy is big Agriculture, and Developer friendly (crappy ones at that) in one of the most fertile farming regions in the country.
Finally something that may stick to get this guy out of Washington.
October 12th, 2006 at 11:27 amHappy Guy you’re a twit. First, Reid transfered his ownership to reside in an LLC. This is not illegal, unethical or even reportable. When the LLC sold the property his share in the LLC entitled him to $1.1 Mil. He didn’t own the land but he and the other original owner of the land do own the LLC that sold the land. Secondly, he originally paid $400,000 for the land so his profit is $700,000 which HE DID REPORT. The bastard who wrote this tripe for the AP has already written 2 other bogus articles about Reid. Now he wants to sell the idea that at some point the land Reid bought with a partner somehow magically became someone elses property as if he had just given up his interest in it. A third attempt to try to establish that corruption is a bipartisan issue affecting leadership in both parties. What rubbish!
October 12th, 2006 at 11:42 amNice comeback TritoneSubstitution! Just shows the rhetoric that most of these sheep follow instead of facts.

But hey, we do have some wonderful parting gifts, of which none consist of a radio that plays Rush Limbaugh’s nonsense that you call “news”
what the heck happened to my post which linked a media matters posting on #10.
October 12th, 2006 at 12:03 pmThat is irritating!
Some people might say the Ricardo Pombo is a lying, weasel. Not me.
October 12th, 2006 at 12:26 pmI say he’s a lying, denying, scumbag that wouldn’t know the truth if it bit him in his rather generous buttocks.
Bill Clinton’s people doctored Abramoff’s records…
…and Soros operatives leaked them to the press…

October 12th, 2006 at 12:29 pmThere once was a grand old party named Go-op,
Who made a very large stinky awful Po-op.
When election day came,
No one would even speak their name,
And now they’re almost extinct.
Post Script:
As they sank down in their vile muck,
October 12th, 2006 at 1:02 pmCould faintly be heard one final chicken-cluck:
“Blame Clinton, blame Clinton, blame Clinton.â€
No, nothing is debunked other than this website. “Corrupt Establishment” any time anything even smells fishy about a Republican. Never a Democrat. Your a one sided bunch who can handle the truth. There is corruption on both side but you continually ignore the slime on the left.
And DRxJ shut your lying sh!t filled face. I am going to dig up your previous post to me where you started calling me homophobic and a bunch of other lying bullsh!t and post it over and over until you apologize. You laid low for a while but now that you are back I am going to jam it down your face.
October 12th, 2006 at 1:45 pmactually, happy guy, I didn’t lay low, I was on vacation (disney world with the family)
October 12th, 2006 at 2:03 pmand wow, I really must’ve hit a nerve for you to react like that. Most people, when inaccurately accused of something, usually shrug and say “whatever”. you, on the other hand, attack!
oh, and please, do dig up the posts, as i may be wrong, but you still write and attack like MoonbatPatrol aka Ihateliberals, our resident homophobic troll.
Also, if I’m wrong, here’s a piece of advice…..GET OVER YOURSELF!
Dear Troll…aka happy+guy.
Please read TPM Muckrakers AP’s Reid Story Doesn’t Add Up.
Either that or read The latest Reid hit piece over at DKos.
(I had links in there but this stupid “spam filter” won’t let me post it. What’s up with that?)
When you feel chastized enough and if you find you are man enough, we’ll be more than happy to accept your apology.
Till then, you are todays top Troll. Congradulations.
October 12th, 2006 at 2:24 pmYour a one sided bunch who can handle the truth.
Comment by Happy+Guy — October 12, 2006 @ 1:45 pm
And you are correct, happy dude! We CAN handle the truth
October 12th, 2006 at 2:32 pmTo the good people of California’s Central Valley: from what we now know about Pombo’s cooperation with Abramhoff to insure continuing a system of forced prostitution and forced abortions in the Northern Marianas, if you still vote for Pombo, you are a disgrace to the nation.
October 12th, 2006 at 2:36 pmOK, I’ll be a thorn in the side here despite the presence of trolls. Republicans like to say that Democrats got money from Abramoff, and various cable outlets too lazy to do actual research repeat those claims. They are (whether purposely or not) conflating donations from Abramoff himself with donations from some of his clients, like the Indian tribes. Democrats rightly point out that the tribal donations are entirely separate and legitimate.
Although I strongly support most of the TP posts, it looks like the two types of donations to Pombo are being conflated here. There may be different circumstances that I’m not catching here (and I am completely open to hearing about those), but I think we should generally stick solely to the actual Abramoff donations lest the issue grow so complicated that it is hard to escape the attitude of, “See, both parties are corrupt”.
October 12th, 2006 at 2:48 pmDRxJ #20,
Vacationed at Disneyworld?
ABC”s parent company (that produced the hit piece on Clinton)…
…in the RED state of Florida?
…eEEEEEEWWWWWW!!!!!

Well, we planned the vacation before that awful mockumentary, and you tell my 3 children (aged 4,4,and 3) we ain’t going because of daddy’s politics. sorry, family always comes before politcs. ALWAYS
Secondly, is florida really a RED state? 2000, after an unbiased recount, Florida went to Gore
October 12th, 2006 at 4:00 pm2004, very close, until Diebold came along (okay, I made that up, but it sure sounded good)
There’s another one! There’s another lying conniving greedy corrupt politician. Damn him and damn every single pig politician that sell the country down the river for corporate bribe money, PACs and K-Street lobbyists. If I could line ‘em up, I’d shoot every single one of them down in the street. Jail is too good for them. Asswipes.
October 12th, 2006 at 4:47 pmDoes the corruption ever stop with these NeoCons?
October 12th, 2006 at 10:08 pmAnother lie from Sack-O-Sh!t DRxJ
“… is florida really a RED state? 2000, after an unbiased recount, Florida went to Gore”
WRONG – 3 different liberal groups and one liberal newsparaer went down to recount. Every time the numbers went higher for Bush. But you don’t like facts, you like to make things up. You think elections are stolen and when you find it was the other way you just lie and make things up.
ROTFL, ROTFL, ROTFL – You will lose AGAIN
October 13th, 2006 at 2:07 pm“$27,000 of that money came from Abramoff’s client the Mashpee Wampanoag of Massachusetts, “which received federal recognition from a bill Pombo passed through the [House Resources] committee in 2004.â€
Clairification…. The Masshpee wampanoags didnt get recognized from a Pombo bill… They have been fighting for recognition for more than 20 years and are still in the process(comment period). No offical recognition has been made (as of this date). I believe the Pombo bill helped address some unfair actions in which the mashpees were stepped over by other tribes pursuing federal recognition. They have been on the active waiting list for years… with no action. Their eventual recognition will be a result of their hard work and determination… not a payoff to some lobbist.
October 14th, 2006 at 4:33 pm[...] Pombo denied it at the Tracy Forum on October 5 with the infamous “he never lobbied me.” Less than a week later, we found out, via billing records [PDF, via Think Progress], that Pombo’s a liar. [...]
