British Army chief: ‘We must quit Iraq soon’

The Daily Mail has the exclusive:

The head of the Army is calling for British troops to withdraw from Iraq “soon” or risk catastophic consequences for both Iraq and British society.

In a devastating broadside at Tony Blair’s foreign policy, General Sir Richard Dannatt stated explicitly that the continuing presence of British troops “exacerbates the security problems” in Iraq.

Bush has got to be so pissed off at this point, his head is going to explode. how dare his underlings go against Jesus telling him to attack Iraq.

  2. Gourney says:

US UK out UN in but is Bush man enough to say that he was utterly completely wrong….sorry, that the people who tell him what to think and be passionate about and to pull convincing faces about, were wrong, and so he must be wrong too?

Is Joseph Heller writing the script of the Bush presidency (presidency…for lack of a better term).

Also trolls b4 you start its not liberals who have ’sabotaged’ vicotry in this futile conflict, its people on the ground telling you in Iraq, and its your own like Baker, and its anyone who can think for themselves without being told…..

  3. unitynow says:

At least they have some intelligence – unlike this failed-but-stay-the-failed-course administration. Two wrongs never made a “right” as far as far as I know. Getting ourselves in there for all the wrong reasons, switching objectives, having undefined “enemies” and a yet undetermined “plan” has had disaster written all over it. And the cost? American young people needlessly dying, innocent Iraqis killed in the crossfire – the human “cost”. And then try to wrap your mind around the financial cost of continuing a war which has turned into the largest quagmire in the history of this country and will, no doubt, trump even Vietnam when the history books are written about what a total failure it was. Bush will certainly have a legacy, that’s for certain, but definitely not the exaulted one he believes he deserves. Robin Williams put it pretty succinctly today on Hardball when asked what he thought of Bush. Williams replied: “Bush is the greatest “gift” to the comedy world ever!”…..’nuf said!

  4. pgl says:

I wonder if Bush will accuse Blair of “cut&run”. I guess anyone with enough sense to get out of the path of an oncoming train is seen as a coward to AWOL Bush.

  5. Gourney says:

PS And will the UN who were utterly IGNORED, and coutnrys around the world who were utterly IGNORED, want to come to the rescue of the poor little US/UK?

Brilliant policy Mr Bush for a Brilliant President.

Bush said we’ll all be dead when history makes its judgement on him……Somehow I don’t think we’ll have to wait that long, Mr Worst President in History, you are going to have to live with the hukmiliation the rest of your life, you’ll be like Nixon wandering the streets begging for cups of credibility….and forgiveness

  6. Spudge_Boy says:

    Gourney,

You are correct. Bush’s “You are either with us or with the terrorists” rhetoric will cost us dearly.

  7. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Why does General Sir Richard Dannatt hate our freedom?

  8. HappySmokerUk says:

Why does The Daily Mail hate Bush? I can hear O’reilly now…Who’s this far left wing kook Dannatt anyway…It’s obvious he’s just out to undermine Bush this close to an election…Much like N. Korea & Iran are trying to do…Don’t panic Blair will come yelping, tail between his legs, over to ask Bush, what we do now ooh great one. LOL

    “Gourney”

To add to your point …

    Baker

    Schwarzkopf

    Scowcroft

    Shalikashvili

    McPeak

    Zinni

    The US Army War College

    Retired Generals

Even George H.W. Bush (aka 41)

Gourney is right. The Neocons defied everyone with this military misadventure. Despite good counsel from both Democrats and Republicans, military men and academics – and last, but not least, knowledgable Iraqis.

So don’t start with the “liberal wah wah wah.”

Direct your anger at where it belongs – the Neocons.

    Dick Cheney

    Paul Wolfowitz

    Donald Rumsfeld

    I. Lewis Libby

    Jeb Bush

    William Kristol

All part of the so-called “Project for the New American Century” – with George W. Bush presiding and Faux News “aiding and abetting.”

    we must assist justice.

What does the Chief of the General Staff of the British Army know about military affairs? Why can’t these meddlers mind their own business and leave military matters to the experts like, say, Dick Cheney and Rummy and Shrubby and Karl and Mark Foley and Sanitarium and Neil Cavuto and…..[head explodes]

You’re right on the money, also we all musn’t forget that (beyond any words imaginable) Richard Perle.

Just going through the news today and the continuing revelations on every front from the economy to the war to anything you’d like to mention…

I think this Administration is about to implode.

I don’t know if Bush will be there next year, I think that he will have to resign in utter disgrace over the cynical lies (about absolutely everything) that are the foundation of this presidency.

I dont mean even impeachment either, I think that Bush will implode, health reasons, whatever you want to call it. though it will really be a terminal case of utter humiliation.

He’ll make Nixon look like a prom queen.

The Brits only lost 1 man so far this month, we lost 44. Incompetent soldiers ! All of them. Who needs them.

Why dont they stop complaining and send a few more battalllions?

Its a shame we cant count on those people after all weve done for them

  17. Nathan says:

    truetrue,

Which did you mean – that the UK soldiers are incompetent because they are not dying as fast as your own (death is the ultimate sign of competency?), or that the US soldier who died were incompetent?

And what, exactly, have you done for the UK in Iraq?

As a matter of fact, what have you, personally, done at all?

  18. bs says:

I guess that makes it easy to see why Britain is our main accomplice in this crime spree against humanity.

Also the UK have a much smaller army than the U.S in Iraq.

  32. John+Gilpins says:

If we really want to win this war, I would suggest we change course and do a few things that would certainly raise a few eyebrows. My suggestions are just that—suggestions. They may not be workable, but they have entered my mind. Here they are:

    1. Require everyone to be a nudist. People wearing clothes would be arrested. When the temperatures are on the cool side, people will not venture outside for long periods of time and freeze their buns off. Cool weather–less violence. It’s difficult to conceal weapons when you are nude.

    2. Ban cars, trucks, and trains in Iraq. Car bombs can’t happen if there’s no cars. Our world once relied on horses and camels for transportation, and there’s no reason why Iraq couldn’t rely on horses and camels again for a few years. It would more difficult to conceal a bomb on a horse/camel. A horse/camel doesn’t have a trunk.

Regardless of what the Bush administration is saying, Iraq is in a civil war now. The above measures WOULD be highly, highly, highly, highly unorthodox, but lives would be saved. I am not a nudist nor do I own ten million horses and camels, but I certainly think that these measures would change the equation quite a bit.

These measures would not be democratic measures, but I really don’t think democracy is a realistic goal at this point.

  34. John+Gilpins says:

I forgot to mention that my suggestions could be implemented on a case-by-case basis. Just banning clothes would be a plus. Implementing car/truck bans would be more difficult.

The economy is in shambles now. How low can it go? Less violence would restore confidence–economically.
    and politically.

    #39,

LOL! LOL! LOL! Ain’t that the truth.

The Bush’s are all about making a buck. There’s nothing wrong with making a buck, but this family didn’t make money the old-fashioned way through honesty and integrity.

I sense a rising, rising, rising, rising tide of disdain for these *****************************************. You can fill in the blanks. The natives are becoming quite restless. Quite! The Bush family has no morals, and they hide behind a self-proclaimed allegiance to God.

Doro, George’s sister, has a new book out about her father. This book should really be in the comedy section of bookstores. What a piece of fiction.

That’s not to say that I’m not a believer in the Commander-in-Chief being able to sack a contrarian general who goes public, its just that I think our current crop of “active” generals have had their balls cut off and are doing a disservice to those that they are in charge to lead.

You are all such a bunch of silly folk. We need to kneel down and thank our beloved newly self appointed king of America and the world, for making us all feel safe and snug. I for one am so happy to know that Iraq is now a democracy. Bush told us so yesterday. That really makes me proud to be an American. We have taken a country that had a terrible dictator and given them a democratic way of life. Silly people even though they had electricty, plumbing that worked, daily jobs to complete their non democratic lives, they are much happier now because they have democracy and democracy comes at the price of soldiers occupying their country until 2010. These people are over joyed to now have democracy, even at the price of losing 600,000 of their loved ones, it’s in the name of democracy and I am sure they are sending cards and flowers as we speak to Bush. They must know that the simple needs in life, no water , no electricty, no plumbing, no real life are simply what they have to deal with because America has given them the great gift of democracy. I have to thank this administration for it’s forsight and planning because we can all take a breath and see that Iraq is now a democracy, Bush told us so yesterday.

  50. MARVY+MARY says:

Some time soon. He is really happy with the war in Iraq and feels Democracy is thriving. Thank you Bush for bringing Democracy to this country. The army chief probably wants to leave Iraq because Iraq has a democratic government. Clap, Clap! We have created a democratic government in Iraq. Bush told us so yesterday! Their is no reason for them to stay because the american government is sendiing war ships to Iran as we speak. The English know that this government will give the same gift to Iran. Pretty soon Iran will benifit just like Iraq has and they will be awarded the great gift of democracy. We really must take a moment and thank this government for the forward thinking and smart behavior that is making the world such a peacful democratic place. Thank you for making the world safe, Mr. Bush.

I’m British you numpty and that is just unforgivable. The British army are your allies for crying out loud. Perhaps we’re not getting it full on as we’ve learnt from painful experience how to deal with insurgency / terrorist action by going in softly softly.

Correct me if I’m wrong but on the eve of the Iraq war the difference was summed up fairly clearly by each of our commanding officers. The UK fella talked about treading lightly as we were here to liberate a proud population steeped in History and civilisation. The US bloke went gung ho and was shouting about “Hammer time”.
