Air America files for bankruptcy.

Air America files for bankruptcy.

Air America Radio has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but the network will stay on the air as it searches for new investors, the AP reports. “The network had denied rumors just a month ago that it would file for bankruptcy, but on Friday Air America said negotiations with a creditor from the company’s early days had broken down.”

Oh, the wingnut blogo-nerds are gonna have a field day with this one. Prepare yourself.

  2. DrSinker says:

    Not all that surprising.

Progressives get their radio news from NPR, a fairly objective source.

Nutjobs get their radio news from Rush, a hypocritical blowhard.

  3. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

No big deal. Many companies file for reorganization under Chapter 11.

  4. Reality says:

Maybe AA should apply for a grant from the Heritage Foundation. I hear lots of talk radio hosts and networks get money from there.

Oh, that’s right, they only support wingnut radio.

  5. Grand+Moff+Texan says:

negotiations with a creditor from the company’s early days had broken down

I wonder who this creditor is? Air America was doing poorly early on before they changed strategies, so I guess that’s come back to haunt them.

Oh well, it doesn’t take them off the air.

Oh, the wingnut blogo-nerds are gonna have a field day with this one. Prepare yourself.

What do you expect? They’re still stupid enough to support preznit Miserable Failure, so their opinion is always going to be a joke.

Tons of right-wing business ventures fail financially but are propped up by Scaife and Heritage.

And NPR is not a progressive station. They’re so terrified of being called biased, they refuse to give sufficient context or call a lie a lie. The other day I listened to a conversation about the media where they allowed themselves and CBS to be called “liberal” without argument, while questioning if FOX News is a conservative outlet.

  7. Quicksand says:

I like to monitor right-wing gibberish. In a fund-raiser email from Dick Cheney, stated that “The Democrats rely on unions and wealthy liberals to fund and operate their voter turnout.”

I guess this blows that talking-point on how rich we liberals are.

  8. Zimzone says:

IMHO, Air America trys to hard to be like FUX News.
Rhodes is always yelling & using sound props, which
irritates the hell out of me.
I prefer Ed Schultz, who I thought did a good job on
Larry King last night against some loudmouthed wingnuts.

That aside, we need more liberal voices on the air, not fewer.
NPR is paranoid, and rightfully so, that wingunts will object
    to objectivity.

Of course, the Right will scream, ’see, you couldn’t make it!’
while ignoring the fact that O’Leilly has backer paying for
him to be on the air becasue he has no listener base!

  9. cynic says:

I wish people would quit referring to Air America as if it represented, in some specific way, “progressive talk”. It’s a business, owned by Sheldon Drobny, and it only represents itself. In the opinion of many who know broadcasting, it’s been poorly managed – everything from scheduling to talent to promotion have been botched. Hopefully someone else who knows what they’re doing will enter this market. I gave up on AA when they killed Morning Sedition, their best show (thanks, Danny).

  10. Gwen says:

I’d like to hear from Air America Radio about the bankruptcy. I’m a premium subscriber and did not receive any information – I read about it at cnn.com. Come on AA – be honest with your loyal listeners so we know how to respond to the right wing extremists who will be gloating about this turn of events!

  12. ForTruth says:

Is it time for a crapstorm? It was the last time this thread was introduced. Get ready, the fun will begin later.

I never listened to AA. So I am not phased by this. Just don’t take off Countdown, ok?

  13. MrBlueSky says:

It’s truly sad to see this happening. Here in Seattle, Air America began its service just days before the 2004 Presidential Election by turning over a small, failing Country music station on AM radio. I’ve been listening since its announcement of commencement of services in April 2004 via streaming over their webpage… and have been a daily listener ever since.

But where’s George Soros when you need him?!?!!?? AAR needs a good liberal benefactor help them in their time of need!!!

  14. tom+baker says:

11 – don’t let’em gloat – the fact is, smart people with jobs and lives to live can’t listen to the radio all day every day, like the wingnuts do. many get their morning/evening news from npr (support it please, cause they’re trying to righty-fy it as we speak), and many read a variety of books, newspapers and magazines and actually talk to other people, which makes them distinctly different from the listeners of wingnut radio, which is much closer in kind to televangelism than it is anything having to do with government/politics/society.

That being said – I still hope Air America pulls through and continues to offer an alternative to the crazy brown-shirt hysterics the other AM vendors see fit to market.

  15. Jay Randal says:

Only neanderthal right wingers listen to radio, so nobody should be surprised about this! Progressives should have concentrated on taking over TV networks and not bothered with radio stations!

  16. Tundra says:

But Air America said they wern’t last month.

See they LIED, that’s all they do is LIE LIE LIE. How can we trust them?

  17. big+papa says:

    As an unabashed Liberal Progressive…

    …when I listen to the radio…

    …it’s to hear MUSIC!

  18. Concerned+Conservative says:

This may surprise all of you but I am not glad about this and thus will not gloat. I think we need more viewpoints being aired and debated, not fewer.

  19. B-Red says:

The problem with Air America is not that they’re “liberal,” or that their marketing strategy was perhaps not the greatest. Their issues stem from (1) always having to fight an uphill battle against the more entrenched wing-nut radio machinery, which will likely always be more profitable and ubiquitous due to the amount of idiots in this country and them being in bed with big business and the powerful, and (2) their insistence on using Rhandi Rhodes as their afternoon ratings grabber.

I’m not sure their is much they can do about the first problem (right-wingers have been on talk radio for decades), but the second problem should have been addressed long ago. Rhandi Rhodes doesn’t necessarily host a bad program (those little skits at the top of the hour are often quite funny), but she is certainly not the right person for the afternoon drive time slot on a nationally syndicated network.

Like the previous poster mentioned, she uses the same 4 sound effects she’s used for years (usually to excess and annoyment), she perpetually spouts the same 3 or 4 emotionally driven takes on the same 3 or 4 topics (enough about how “no one” can figure out the butterfly ballot already, it’s just embarrasing for her to be even going there), never lets callers with opposing viewpoints even finish their sentences, let alone engage them in meaningful dialogue, and she has real trouble forming coherent sentences that are free from hysteria and tangent even on the most mundane of topics.

I know she’s one of the good guys, and her heart is in the right place, but she’s the Hillary Clinton of talk radio, alienating as many or more than she corralls. Air America should put Ed Schultz or Al Franken in the afternoon and move Rhodes to the noon time slot. They should also sever ties with Jerry Springer, as he is just terminally bad publicity for the netword due to his infamous TV show (which is unfortunate because he actually sounds like quite a thoughtful man). Schultz and Franken conduct their show in a much more thoughtful and concise way that stimulates thought and participation. Rhodes bends over backwards to be edgy and funny but too often comes across as somewhat shrill, causing her message to be drowned out before it can sink in.

I literally stumbled onto this website after hearing of the failure of this radio show.
It was strange because the radio show I was listening to said that when faced with the facts, often times, the Liberals (Prpressives?) fall into call names and hate mongering.

Then I read the comments, oh my, the radio broadcaster was correct,. Look at the name calling and hate mongering that takes place here!

A “fact” that appears in the Wall Street Journal “According to court papers, the radio network has lost money since its founding in 2004. Air America has lost $13.1 million so far this year. Last year, Air America’s operating losses ballooned to $19.2 million from $8.6 million in 2004.”
Wow that adds up to a whopping $40.p million.”

I ask could not that money have been spent better?

  21. jaf says:

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Murdoch was willing and able to lose $1B on Fox News before it turned a profit!

  22. Delta Airlines says:

What Happened? I thought George Soros was the guy who funded this! I thought he was rich as Solomon! Maybe that was bulls**t. Ya think?

Some companies emerge from Ch 11, some don’t, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

There were something like 700 comments from crowing trolls here last month when this story first emerged, think I’ll head elsewhere for a while.

  24. ScrewBush says:

Perhaps if the White House propaganda campaign was funneling millions if not billions of dollars into AAR like they are giving to Christian radio and television stations that daily pray for Bush, vote for Bush, and idolize Bush, then perhaps AAR would be on even footing with some Right Wing networks. AAR has to compete in the free market, most Right stations do not. They praise the free market, but they don’t want anything to do with it.

  25. VRWC+member says:

Dear “ScrewBush” (classy name, is this more Liberal hate mongering?),

Enlighten lead me as to your basis for this “funneling of money to Christian radio and television stations?”

NPR has been the mouthpiece of the Left. Read even the comments here.

    Please be objective now.

    Thnx.

    …but like I mentioned above…

This is hardly surprising. I mean you have O’Reilly, Limbaugh, and Hannity who have all these followers and are backed by Scaife, and the Heritage Foundation, but they have nobody.

  29. Parrotlover77 says:

I feel bad for those who may lose their jobs if a new investor cannot be found, but this is HARDLY the end of progressive talk radio. They just tried to tackle too much too quickly Faux News was not profitable for like a decade, but Rupert Murdock kept feeding it with his gigantic enteprise’s vast fortune. Air America doesn’t quite have those kind of resources!

Anyway, even if Air America closed its doors, there is still tons of progressive talk, not to mention that some of the bigger Air America personalities would probably be snatched up and syndicated by somebody else.

I LOVE Sirius Left talk radio. Good shows! Lynn Samuels is the best!

Wow. I can’t believe the elite atitude here. Just because I don’t agree with liberal politics, I’m stupid? I have to admit I love to see AAR go down. I’ve tried to listen several times, but just couldn’t get past the rage from Randi, Al, et. al. It’s sad to see someone that furious with nothing but rage. At least O’Reilly provides some entertaining topics. I really think to get the progressive point across, you need more people like Colbert. His gentle mocking makes me think about issues more than the 24×7 bashing from AAR. Just my opinion.

  36. tom+baker says:

36 – You can’t imagine how f-king ironic it is to hear righties on here talking about how the lefties are hateful. The right has risen to power on the back of Rush and Company’s hatemongering, their politicians have gotten elected on smearing and surreptitious egging-on of the congenitally hateful, and you smug sob’s have the balls to come around here and decry the lefties’ mean-ness? That’s just amazing – the guile of it! To cop a phrase from one of YOUR OWN – go f*** youself. Really – do it.

  37. Bluedog49 says:

Let’s keep in mind that Rupert Murdoch was able to sustain losses of $250 million in the first few years of Fox News. Aside from that, it never ceases to amaze me to hear conservatives sit there on their fat asses and decry the “anger” and “hate” on Air America. Gosh, they were just filled with too much anger… Give me a frickin break! Right wing radio has been nothing but anger and vitriol from the beginning. Goddamn Michael Weiner called for Madaline Albright to be executed just last week. Rush Limbaugh began his shows in 1993 with the theme of “America Held Hostage” after Clinton one the election. They called him a murderer, rapist, traitor, etc. So, all you repubs who are going to weigh in on how Air America is too angry — just stuff it where the sun doesn’t shine!

  39. Jill says:

For all the right-wingers who exult in the prospect of AAR’s leaving the airwaves, I just have one question: What is it about having a different viewpoint out there that frightens you so much? NO ONE on the left has EVER demanded that Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity be taken off the air. WE are secure enough that we don’t care about other viewpoints, why aren’t you?

As for AAR, well, this doesn’t surprise me. The beginning of the end was the hiring of Danny Goldberg, who proceeded to dismantle AAR just as it was finding its legs. It started with the cancellation of Morning Sedition and shabby tretment of Marc Maron, and it has never recovered. Having to pay Goldbert $400K just to go away after the board realized its mistake didn’t help either.

My view is that the concept was just too ambitious; starting up a network from scratch without access to Rupert Murdoch or Sun Myung Moon-level money, such as the right-wing outlets have.

I hope that some outfit like Jones Radio (which syndicates Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz) picks up Sam Seder and Randi Rhodes, re-hires Mike Malloy (who was horribly treated last month by AAR), and recognizes Marc Maron’s talent and gives him a show he can run with.

  46. bonesTwo says:

This is my favorite post here

Progressives get their radio news from NPR, a fairly objective source

Hilarity – NPR is as objective as Rush Limbaugh. Even funnier is the logic that Air America failed becuase people get their news elsewhere. It failed becuase people are tired of being inundated with the liberal agenda, via ABC, NPR, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, AP, Reuters. Air America was just another source of it. Doesnt anyone find it weird that the content on Al Franken’s show closely mirrors that of the nightly news?

That’s why Rush and Hannity are so popular, you actually hear a different opinion than the normal Liberal BS on all the other networks.

If you are a liberal, NPR is failry objective to your cause. Just like Rush would be to a conservative. Air America failed becuase it wasnt anything new than what I can get on the Today show.

  47. Jeff says:

Leftists cant argue, and they cant entertain. Time for a government handout so this fine station can remain on the air.

If you are a liberal, NPR is failry objective to your cause.

    Un, no.

Air America failed becuase it wasnt anything new than what I can get on the Today show.

Is that what you’re hearing? Strange, because AA is only seeking Ch. 11 protections after one creditor wouldn’t negotiate, not because no one is listening.

You see: you’re misinformed. That’s the quality of your right wing news sources. It’s not a matter of “bias,” it’s a matter of information. Right wing “news” channels don’t even read much news. It’s all personality-driven opinion shows, feeding you the opinion you apparently can’t come up with on your own.

Sixty years of “ownership” of America’s public education system trumps Fox, Moon, and Rush combined. Most of you are nothing more then the result of a dozen years or more of inculcation, followed by reaching for ways to reaffirm a belief system that you never independently “owned” in the first place.

When you see yourself as a colection of your beliefs, then questioning them becomes a dangerous exercise of self-doubt — not for the weak of mind.

“Consistency is the final death blow to imagination.” Oscar Wilde (perhaps a paraphrase rather than a quite)

  51. Grand+Moff+Texan says:

Leftists cant argue, and they cant entertain. Time for a government handout so this fine station can remain on the air.

Again with the “no one’s listening” error. Read the story, moron. Aren’t conservatives supposed to be good at business? No, wait, you were supposed to be good at national security, too, and we all know how that worked out.

So I guess your wingnut “news” sources protect you from knowning about the wingnut welfare system that supports and trains the repeaters of talking points that you mistake for news?

Whatever. Go join a conservative book club or something. You’ll probably never wonder why you get them all for a dollar!

  54. bonesTwo says:

that what you’re hearing? Strange, because AA is only seeking Ch. 11 protections after one creditor wouldn’t negotiate, not because no one is listening.

Right. Those creditors just can’t wait to leave this fantasy land of a super popular radio station, if what you say is true.

Man, if it was just for that one creditor – probably run by a conservative, that put them under. Darn. Free market is a bitch.

Air America failed becuase it’s boring retread of the same old shit that the networks try to pass of as news all day. Sorry your little project failed.

A government handout is exactly what you need to keep that fine station alive, it would be the perfect demonstration of liberal government programs in action – taking tax dollars away from citizens to fund a radio station that encourages you to vote for politicians that will raise your taxes. Wackos.

Paul, please point to the NPR show in which they insulted a sitting president’s daughter by calling her “the White House Dog?”

Or how about those “cute” names he had for Tom Daschle, Hillary Clinton, or John Kerry. That you willfully ignore the difference speaks volumes.

Rush is, as has been said before,”a flaming Nazi gasbag.”

  56. james+k.+sayre says:

National Public Radio (NPR) is an arm of the fascist bush regime: NPR supported the right-wing death squads in Haiti that tried to drive out the democratically election President Jean Bertrand Aristide. He was later kidnapped and transported to Africa by Bush forces.
    Cheers.

  57. bonesTwo says:

Look – every news outlet has an agenda – it is a fact. If you don’t think so, you’re really not using your head. You need to find out the agenda so that you can take the comments into context, whether right or left.

Read the book ‘Bias’ where the point is made that in the 80s/90s in the newsrooms they realized that they can’t objectively report on the america without diversity, such as women’s issues, minorities, etc. So they diversified their reporting staff to more closely represent America. Except one thing, 95% of them are still liberals. Apparently you can’t really report on a women’s rights issue if you are a man, but libearl news rooms can ‘objectively’ report on a political issue.

So – my point is that Air AMerica is just an extension of America’s news rooms, where 95% are libbies, and they ‘report’ what Air America says for pure entertainment. That’s why it is faililng – becuase I can turn on CBS Evening news and catch the same lame ass Bush digs.

  58. Grand+Moff+Texan says:

As for “since 9/11,” I wonder why you have to cut out 9/11. Since then, of course, al Qaeda has gotten exactly what they want: US out of Saudi and a quagmire to train in. In fact, Bush quoted bin Laden’s approval during the 2004 election.

As for failure, I don’t have to hope for it. Bush delivers it in buckets every day. The sooner we can stop him, the sooner Americans can stop dying for nothing in the middle of nowhere.

See how much you miss, just being the wingnut media’s bitch? Come out of your spider hole, assuming you have the guts.

    56, Let’s assume he is………

However, he has millions of listeners and advertisers willing to pay big bucks to get their message out to those millions.

That’s the problem with AA. Not enough listeners to justify high advertising revenue and poor management leading to little cost control. In the real world this equals no free cash flow to pay your creditors.

    Free enterprise sucks doesn’t it?

  61. Grand+Moff+Texan says:

Those creditors just can’t wait to leave this fantasy land of a super popular radio station, if what you say is true.

Creditor, not creditors. AA got off to a rough start and now an early creditor is playing hardball. Not the same thing as having no listeners.

See how easy it is to not be an idiot? You’re so wedded to a pre-determined narrative that you can’t even get the facts straight. That’s not bias, that’s weakness.

Bankrupcy is maybe more common in America today that at any time in recent history.

  65. bonesTwo says:

Grand+Moff+Texan – nice try with the link. That story you cited SAYS NOTHING TO PROVE YOUR POINT. It says nothing about having tons of listeners, that this is the best radio station ever, etc. It is the standard ‘we’ve screwed this up becuase we’ve over spent and don’t have enough customers so now we are going to shake some shit up for a while and hope to make it through but need help in the interim” – That is a complete joke that you cited this article, becuase it makes it look like you have some support somewhere. I’d encourage EVERYONE to read this and comment as to what the state of AA is.

My take: it is not ONE creditor that has caused this. Typical liberal – the irony is hilarious – blaming someone else for your failures.

  66. U says:

Check out the AA Ch. 11 filing.

After railing against corporate America for its unfunded health and pension obligations, guess what? Yup, AA has a material, unfunded health and pension obligation.

After railing aginst Clear Channel Communications, guess what? AA has been in bed with Clear Channel to the tune of over a half a million dollars.

Employee insurance premiums have gone unpaid as well — a paragon of “taking care of the little guy”.

Read the filing — you might actually learn something (including how to reach Al by mail — his address is in the filing).

HAHAHA! You are truly dumb enough to be a conservative. I quoted what the article said about chap. 11. That’s all.

AA has more listeners in more urban areas than FOX has viewers. You can do your own digging on that, I’ve been listening to you spoon-fed idiots on this issue for years.

The fact is that Olbermann is soaring while O’Reilly is plummeting.

See? You have to pretend that a free market (that you know nothing about) proves you right, but in terms of actual audience, the right wing pundits are scrambling for a dying audience.

It’s truly pathetic when people like you pretend you can think. You’ve been fed your opinions all your life and now you’re not ready when your fantasy world comes crashing down.

Going under? Now I know you didn’t read the article. Is that what your handlers are telling you? Conservatism is a disaster and the religious right is leaving you, and it’s great? Democrats everywhere are bitchslapping failed Republicans for their disasters, and you think you just hit a home run?

I mean isnt it possible that the station is going under has at least something to do with the fact that a small group of people (liberals) can’t make a broad market business work no matter how hard you yell. Suckers.

Right, like the biggest political site on the internet is Democratic (run by a former Republican who got sick of the creationists and other carnival freaks who have took over the Republican party only to be rejected by the American people every time they try to legislate their superstitions). The new technology of politics is dominated by the left because the right doesn’t have a single policy success to point to.

    You blew it. You’re over.

If Democrats are so bad at business, why are corporate donors turning to the Democratic party? That’s right: because no one backs a loser.

The right doesnt have a single policy success? Hmmm – I guess those tax cuts were pretty good – recovered the economy from clinton’s little recession and 9/11. Doesnt matter if you think it was good – the 3-4million new jobs we created, those people must think it’s ok. But I’m sure those jobs aren’t as ‘good’ as the jobs you’d create, i know i know.

What are you going to do if your party loses in a month? Seriously, if all you spew is true, it should be over by now. a 60 seat pickup like the repubs did in 1992, not 15. You are in the darkness my friend.

And I like the superstitions comment – obviously talking about religion. Subtle. Too bad you’re on the wrong side of that one too (just as compared to the rest of the USA anyway)

Later – i’ll check back after the elections to hear about why you lost.

  94. VRWC+member says:

    O “Grand Moff Texan”

I forgive you, you do harbor much too much internal rage and hatred. Give us righties a little of that lefty Kum-By-Ya love won’t you?

It appears you (as many angry Lefties) look for failure in any way.

Perhaps you feel the Left Wing (”nuts”) would have done better? I have noticed they can’t even decide who they really are Hawks or “cut and Run”-ners it merely depends on how the political wind blows at that moment.

Now let me remind you of the past.

Dems are just weak. The Dems lately do not really know how to fight a War – they’re trapped in the Liberal mindset of wanting to “talk” it out and shake hands and having their Kodak moments.

But then they are faced with the true realities that some nations just hate us and want to kill us all.

Republicans know this fact and also realize that at times you “back” the better of 2 evils. But both are evil.

I must remind you of the weak Somalia/”Black Hawk Down” by Dem. Pres. Clinton joint UN effort and also the terribly weak effort of Dem Pres. Carter hostage-freeing-attack “Desert One” mission. Both wanted it both ways and it doesn’t work. They take our nations heroes and put them at great risk in poorly thought out missions.

Remember history notes “Condemnation was heaped on Carter, and the hostages finally were set free Jan. 20, 1981, the same day Carter’s successor, Ronald Reagan, took office.”

It took fear of his strength that ended the hostage standoff.

That is the difference. The World knows the risks it takes when the US is lead by a Republican Pres. and Staff that will not allow such actions to be brought against the nation and not retailiated.

  95. Mugsy says:

This makes no sense. I *know* I’m not the only person that listens to AAR all day long! :)

I work at home, and my first order of business is to stream AAR, which I listen to continually till the evening news comes on.

One thing I’ve learned as a NASCAR fan (yes, not every racing fan is a Conservative Redneck) is to support the sponsors. I buy my Ovaltine and looked into investing in gold.

I think the problem is that potential sponsors don’t know there is a loyal AAR following out there.

  96. Grand+Moff+Texan says:

Why are you talking about masturbation?

    It was a metaphor.

You haven’t produced fact one, little troll, and you have misrepresented (or misread) the facts I’ve given you. All you can do is repeat what you’ve been told. You’re incapable of thinking for yourself.

  101. Douglas.G says:

In all actuality, the business model used by Air America, is not self sustaining. Talk radio depends on advertisers, AND listeners. With listeners, come other radio stations who pay for the ability to air the show. Air America was PAYING other radio stations to air their show, because there were not enough people in a single area that petitioned their local station to carry the show.

Unless they get more than just backers, unless other radio stations PAY Air America to carry their show, it cannot, and will not survive.

  102. barfly says:

No, much better to actually sell weapons to them – like Reagan.

Don’t you agree that republicans come to the terrorism debate with blooody hands? Reagan armed both sides of the Iran/Iraq war, and so your party is also responsible for much of the carnage of that war. Deal with it, and accept the fact that you’ve lost the debate.

  104. papau says:

A bit of RW bad logic (is RW bad redundant when used with logic?).

It is a little early for anyone to say Air America failed. The have a new creditor, Democracy Allies LLC, that has agreed to pay the operating bills if there is a revenue shortfall – in business this called a credit line – like the ones extended to Donald Trump’s various operations as they go through Chapter 11.

As to a few right wing comments on bias that were made with no knowledge of the studies that have been done by academics as opposed to RW shills, about 60% of reporters are liberal. But what goes into print or gets aired is decided by others – and most of these “others” are either right
wing by conviction or act right wing to get ahead in a world of right wing Boards of Directors running all 6 of the companies that control 95% (by viewer) of our media.

Even the news slant is “right wing” as NPR and formerly unbiased outlets now treat GOP lies as having equal weight as the provable facts presented by others who are suggesting GOP policies need to be changed.

As others have noted, the $25 million lost on Rush’s radio show would kill any other show, but Scafie sells Rush as an infocomercial with time slots sold for national advertising within the show, and time provided for a very few commercials by the local station. Look at the actual advertisements and you’ll see how few they are and how far down the food chain are the buyers of the time.

At this time all media is near 100% right wing, with only an occasional visit to unbiased presentation of a topic. US TV Media is never left wing, and US talk radio Media, other than Air America, Ed Shultz and Stephanie Miller on Jones, and Hartman in Seattle and a couple of other local area folks, is wall to wall right wing.

But it is fun to see RW folks claim a liberal bias in the media. Next they will point to the 2 surveys that claim to prove Left bias in the media – the DC area one that was very small sample – non-random and non-scientific – of a few hundred folks in media in DC, and the second the op-in send a post card in telling us your position and your bias that gets a less than 5000 response from 400,000 sent out – needless to say it is also non-random and non-scientific. Or they will quote that rather funny study that claimed biased could be shown by how many times a media story used certain words.

I love the way the RW needs the myth of a liberal media to explain away their failures.

  105. tom+baker says:

Gotta give this thread some credit for serving as trollpaper for the day. Oh so predictably, they’ve all gathered round here to try and strut up a sense of manly, manly self-righteousness. What’s the prob, guys? Rush too high to do his show today?

Can’t blame them too much, though, all the rest of the news world is flush with breaking stories about crooked, felonious Republicans being hauled off to jail, rehab, and undisclosed locations – gotta be plenty aggravating for them since, even though they’ve been running the show for years, they can’t keep from stepping on their own turds. Blaming Liberals and Democrats is like a high school senior telling his parents he got his lunch money taken away by 5th grader. And you bastards want to call anyone else “lame”?? – That is m-f-ing hilarious!!!

All the blacks who were actually in the room at the time seemed to get a kick out of Dean’s remark, but today a couple of black Republicans tried to crank up the wheezing old conservative outrage machine one more time over his “racially, insensitive and intolerable remarks.” I shall allow nonwhite conservative writer Ramesh Ponnuru to answer them:
Give me a break. Dean is saying, hyperbolically, that there aren’t many blacks or other nonwhites in the Republican party. He’s right. I’ve been to many, many Republican dinners where most nonwhites present have been serving the food. (Or giving the keynote.) If Republicans are bothered when people make that observation, they should try to make it less true.
I thought that was an interesting read… didn’t you Ernie
    P.S. Whose over for dinner….Burt?

That “Axis of Evil” rhetoric sure payed off. It’s like WW2 around here, what with all the countries lining up to fight in”the War on Terror” . . . in Korea, Iraq, and Iran.

But at least there are now impenetrable forests of marijuana in Afghanistan for the Taliban to hide in . . .

The flailing rhetoric masks an inner terror: that they were played for chumps with all that think-tank-brewed swill.

“Market forces dictate profitability” – except for corporate welfare; “the sanctity of marriage” – until a woman on life-support’s husband decides to give her final peace; “States Rights” – until a presidential election is at stake; “smaller government” – until they wield power; “fiscal responsibility” – until they get their hands on the pursestrings – the list grows daily.

How will they ever handle “President Pelosi” for a year and a half until ‘08?

Newt Gingrich will have an anneurism.

  172. disgusted says:

Trust me barfly, I understand your frustration but there is a better way. You seem like an intelligent individual, use your knoodle. Ask them to define un-american. Ask them pointed questions about policy and don’t let silly personal attacks sway your point – be persistant in an economical way. If you take the high road and stick to the point, you’ll find that you’ll “de-program” them one issue at a time. This is a very important fact that I think is lost in this new political climate. I’m not a dreamer either, it works. We need to be hard on those of us that stoop to that level and reign in our own as well.

Reagan’s mistakes led to Bush’s cover-up (pardons for Ollie and Poindexter), which stuck Clinton with a bag of republican errors, decades’ old. Who gave Saddam the OK to invade Kuwait? April Glaspie, Bush’s representative. And if daddy Bush had finished Saddam when he had the chance, ALL the people killed by Saddam during Clinton’s years would stilll be alive. 3000 Americans, and untold hundreds of thousands of Iraqis (including those children who died of starvation during Clinton’s time) would be alive today if Reagan hadn’t supplied both sides, and if Bush hadn’t wimped out.

Two can play this game, but you have to come prepared, Porky.

    Why Air America Failed

    October 13, 2006

    BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here is Mack in Orlando, Florida. Welcome, sir, to the program.

CALLER: Rush, what an honor to talk to you. It’s been 16 years that I’ve been listening, and first time I’ve ever called in.

RUSH: Thank you. I’m glad you got through.

CALLER: Yes. What I wanted to talk about today was something very interesting that went across the Internet this morning. I see that Air America filed for Chapter 11.

    RUSH: Is that right?

CALLER: I thought it’s an interesting contrast between a media program that has been propped up by all types of liberal donors finally hitting the wall, and I think it’s testimony also to something that you said frequently, and that is that liberals have to hide their agenda. If they come right out and say here’s what we’re about, it doesn’t sell in the marketplace of ideas.

RUSH: Well, in this case, that’s not what was going on here. Because they were very honest in what they believed on the air, and it was firmly rejected.

    CALLER: That’s my point.

RUSH: Oh, oh, oh. I thought you were saying they were hiding who they are.

CALLER: No, no. I’m saying that liberals, in order to get what they want, they have to hide what they are. When they come right out and lay it on the table–

RUSH: Yeah, but that’s true. That’s an accurate and very shrewd observation on your part. But, you know, folks, this was never… This whole Air America thing… I saw they’re filing bankruptcy today. I betcha they don’t make it through the election. If they do they’ll close doors right after. The only reason that bunch even went on the air is to affect elections. There isn’t the slightest semblance of any business plan or model or understanding in that whole operation. It has been destined to fail from the moment it was conceived. This is one liberal conception that should have been aborted that wasn’t, and it’s going to amount now to being stillborn because it never really got life.

It’s been a clear illustration. The most amazing thing about it to me has been to watch people who are in the broadcasting business grant it legitimacy and status when it never earned any. I mean, I was looking at the reports. They got $4 million dollars in assets? I have that much in my checking account! These people, $4 million in assets, they’ve got liabilities of over $20 million? Did they ever sell any advertising? They ran this as a 527 organization. They ran it as a political organization. They hadn’t the slightest clue what they were doing, and in the process… I’m just kidding about the $4 million in the checking account but, folks, that’s embarrassing.

That’s like somebody who… I don’t know how to analogize that. How pathetic that is! Liabilities have got to be more than 20 million to boot. The bottom line is that it really illustrates that liberals have — I mean, why did they do this? They were doing it to counter conservative talk radio, me. They didn’t have the audience. They still don’t. I don’t care where you go, in whatever liberal circle or Democrat Party circle; they don’t understand why this works. I have people say, “Well, you know, they didn’t work because they’re just not funny.” It has nothing to do with it. “Oh, it didn’t work because they’re always angry! They’re always bashing Bush.” It has nothing to do with it. Broadcasting is a talent, is a skill, it takes training, it takes experience.

You don’t bring a bunch of idiots who have never done it before, put ‘em on the radio and expect to be reaching 20 million people just because you’re liberal, but their arrogance and their condescension, just like they’re not examining their own failures as a party and as a movement, they do not study those who succeed and try to figure out how it’s done. You know why they think that the Republicans won the House in ‘94 and why Bush won the presidency in 2000? Because all we did was criticize Clinton for eight years. They’re just doing what they think is a carbon copy of what we did in their bashing of Bush. They’re just wandering aimless in the desert out there, folks. This bunch was never a bunch of broadcasters.

Sadly, a bunch of broadcasters tried to prop ‘em up and lost their shirts. Everybody involved with them lost their shirts. Look at all the help they had, all the publicity, all of the interviews, all of the (panting) Air America is starting in six months (panting) Air America is starting in five months, the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN practically became Air America on TV before they were even on the air, and so that sort of gives the lie to what really makes success is buzz and spin and PR and promotion, didn’t matter, did it? There are substantive reasons for this that go long beyond… Well, they weren’t funny or were too serious. They’re just not good. Nobody over there has the slightest understanding about what this is. I was surprised they lasted this long to be quite honest with you, folks.

    BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Up next is Carl in Chicago. Carl, you’re next on the EIB Network. Hello.

CALLER: Rush, a great pleasure to speak with you this afternoon.

    RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: One thing that I’ve always thought about so far as Air America radio is, it was completely and utterly unnecessary, regardless of how good or bad the content was, it was unnecessary. When you are inundated every day on the airwaves with NPR, ABC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, what was one more media, one more piece of that puzzle going to provide that already wasn’t being provided?

RUSH: Well, you’re looking at this rationally and logically and you’re not looking at it from the liberal mind-set.

    CALLER: True, very true.

RUSH: The liberal mind-set is that, yeah, they’ve got the media, all those things, and they do know it, they will sit there and deny all day that the media outlets you mentioned are on their side, but they know it.

    CALLER: Sure they do.

RUSH: But there was this problem. They no longer had the monopoly. This guy Limbaugh and talk radio came along, and believe me, the Clintons have talk radio on the brain, Tom Daschle had talk radio on the brain, they really believed that talk radio is what beats them when they lose elections, is what embarrasses them when they are embarrassed publicly, and they said, well, we’re not there. So we’ve gotta get into talk radio, and they thought just by entering it, that they would dominate and be big and huge, and that’s why I say they had no clue and no concept. I mean, if they want to lie to themselves about how my program was created, when they know what they think about it and what they say about it is a lie, if they’re not even willing to be honest with themselves about how this works successfully, then they never, ever had a chance. It was arrogance, and the people they selected to be on there. It was just laughable. It was one of the most obvious buffoonery steps I have seen taken in broadcasting, and I couldn’t believe the respected broadcasters that got on board and supported it. It never had a chance. It was doomed to fail from the get-go, institutionally.

CALLER: The article I read today, they declined to note who the creditor was where the negotiations fell through, they declined to name the creditor. I was curious about that, why would a creditor not want to be named or why would they not name that creditor?

RUSH: Well, look it, these are liberals. Now, they ran this as a 527. I have never had a donor to this program. We don’t do business with donors. They had people donating money as if you donate to a political organization or 527. Now, if they’d called themselves a 527, those donors would be out of money, but since they didn’t do it as a 527 (they ran it as a 527) and pretended to be a business, these donors now may get some of their money back. This has been a scam and a sham and ill-conceived from the get-go. It is just classic, typical liberalism, and that’s why probably this person doesn’t want to be known.

RUSH: Well, you’re looking at this rationally and logically and you’re not looking at it from the liberal mind-set.

    CALLER: True, very true.

This is just more conservative crap, as the corporate-controlled media aren’t liberal in any way, shape, or form. “Market forces,” and broadcasting constraints have more to do with what is broadcast, and few “mainstream” publications are presented from a strictly liberal perspective. Even the New York Times is no paragon of liberalism, as they were quick to print any unfounded slur or unsourced slander to tar Clinton, and to embrace any half-baked rationalization and fairy tale in the run-up to invading Iraq. “Drones of death” that couldn’t fly over a couple hundred miles. “Portable Bio-weapons labs,” Meetings in Prague” that could never be proved, and who can ever forget the half-baked yellowcake?

Who was Rush’s parrot? Nice uniformity of opinion, so apty-named Right World. I can get that kind of wide-ranging intellectual discourse via the bathroom mirror.

Well Da..Hu..”Liberalism”? You Repugs make me sick…The thing that strikes me the most about republicans is how many fags and child molesters you have and refuse to acknowledge; in both the party and your freakin church’s. Myself, I totally don’t mind and even enjoy when two hot girls are making out, but Republicans cant stand it. When two guys are making out on TV or whatever it makes me sick. But republicans see that the same as two girls making out. wtf..
I don’t mind having gay men and women around me but you repugs bug out when around them…
Meanwhile, you repugs are the biggest homophobes yet are full of fags and child molesters,,, give me a break…

  195. JPark says:

Well, it appears liberalism has failed in the free markets… LOL

What does that mean? Would you like to compare Clinton and Bush on the economy? If so, you are screwed.

  196. azlib says:

As usual, I’m late to the party. But I still want to add my opinion. I would much rather listen to a financially bankrupt liberal radio station, than to the morally bankrupt neocon right. And in case you haven’t noticed, AAR is not going to disappear from the air waves tomorrow.

  197. booboo says:

Liberals are bankrupt- – -of ideas. Your pessimism is exausting and the majority of the country can’t suffer it any more. That’s why you lost to Bush..twice. That’s why you lost the House….and the Senate…and that is why you will continue to lose. Your spinning and conspiratorial contortioning are only tying you up in knots- the entertainment value of which is about the only thing positive you have left to offer.

The self-absorbed, self-centered, self-gratifying cravings of the Baby-boomer Liberals are their own undoing. You’re never satisfied. It’s never enough. You’re never happy. Maybe you need to put your treasure in a different place…..”Where your treasure is, your heart will be also.”

Dear “Me Generationers”: your turns up.

  198. NewYorkah says:

You know, what? I’m not going to apologize for being a member of the angry left, or spewing “hate” about Republicans. I hate you. I do. I think you’re all blind, brainwashed, nasty, and racist, and frankly everything that’s wrong with US.

I listen to Air America frequently, and it gives me great pleasure to hear that at least some other people are just as angry as I am about.

Here’s the funny thing, I WAS one of you until we got lied into Iraq. Your pork-barrel-creationist-subsidize-the-rich party finally lost me forever.

  199. booboo says:

buh-bye. I was one of YOU until I grew up. The thing wrong with our country is you won’t defend it unless a never-ending list of criteria is met…which, by definition means, never. That’s a big difference between conservatives and liberals; we’ll defend you, but you won’t even defend yourself. You act big when you ‘attack’ conservatives in the comfort of your American-bought safety but would roll over to any real enemy. Case in point; the “mohommed cartoons”. Just say it, you’re French! Or at least you’re following THEIR lead. Quit being a chicken and just defend your country and your fellow countrymen. Conservatives allready are and would welcome you to join in. We’re not your enemy. Your real enemy stands at the door. Maybe the slight majority of the country can fend them off, but it would sure help if you’d join in. You’re obligated to, whether you believe it or not. Funny thing is, these Muslim psycos are going to kill you first because you represent everything they hate most about “Western Civilization”: Sacrilege, atheism, materialism, Immorality, homosexuality, drug use, abortion, etc. This is on top of what we all represent to them: Women’s rights, economic prosperity, tolerance, voting, etc….but, MOST of all: FREEDOM! Free to be different, free to chose who we vote for, where we travel. Free to chose our occupation. Free to comment here. Free to disagree. Free to pursue our dreams. Yeah, you’re pretty much screwed when it comes to their hit list. It’s a non-negotiable list. I suggest you quit attacking us conservatives and help us attack our real enemy. Here, I’ll help you: pretend THEY’RE consevatives. See, feel that! You CAN hate the right people. Now, go get ‘em!
