Rep. Shays: Abu Ghraib was a ’sex ring.’
During a debate on Wednesday, Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) said, “Now I’ve seen what happened in Abu Ghraib, and Abu Ghraib was not torture. It was outrageous, outrageous involvement of National Guard troops from [Maryland] who were involved in a sex ring and they took pictures of soldiers who were naked.” Watch the video.

If the “prisoners were the soldiers” aren’t they explictly covered by the Geneva Convention? Shouldn’t someone in a command position be held responsible? How about the Commander in Chief? He is the responsible type, isn’t he?

A little clarification here. there were over 300 pictures taken and many of them were of a sexual nature between soldiers. Many other pictures are clearly abouse and torture. Me thinks the Rep. may have blurred the distinction between the two causing shame for his own arousal.

October 13th, 2006 at 4:50 pmI think it’s worth pointing out that the soldiers who were accused of misdeeds at Abu Ghraib are not members of the National Guard as Shays said. They were in fact members of the US Army Reserve’s 372nd Military Police Company, based in Maryland.
For those who may not know, the National Guard is made up of Army and Air Force units containing part time soldiers with a small staff of full timers who manage day to day operations when units are not deployed. National Guard soldiers are subject to carry out the same missions and deployments as the active duty military and follow the same rules, regulations and standards as active duty soldiers and reservists. Additionally, National Guard units have the mission of answering the call of the Governors of their states in repsonse to natural disasters or civil unrest.
Reserve units in all military services — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard — are also units composed of mostly part time soldiers with a small full time staff. Reservists also accomplish the same missions as the active duty military and follow the same rules, regulations and standards.
The difference is that Reservists do not have a secondary state mission and are not subject to the call of their Governors.
