Colorado Group: God, Moses Oppose State Minimum Wage Increase

This November, Coloradoans will vote on Amendment 42, a ballot initiative to raise the state minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.85. If the initiative passes, the minimum wage would be “adjusted annually for inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index used for Colorado.”

Stop 42, the group opposed to the initiative, is taking a “biblical” approach in their campaign against a minimum wage increase. Their new ad depicts a “Moses” character speaking to the voice of God in the Rocky Mountains. “We need divine intervention,” Moses says. God responds: “We can’t let the people make this mistake. Go. Spread the word. Vote no on 42!

Watch it:

More than 650 of the nation’s leading economists disagree. The academics said in a statement issued by the Economic Policy Institute, “[M]odest increases in state minimum wages in the range of $1.00 to $2.50 and indexing to protect against inflation can significantly improve the lives of low-income workers and their families, without the adverse effects that critics have claimed.”

Divine intervention may be the only thing that can help the Stop 42 campaign. In the latest Rocky Mountain News/CBS 4 poll, 74 percent of Colorado voters said they will “definitely” or “probably” support Amendment 42.

Transcript:

MOSES: Hello!

GOD: Can you hear me now?

MOSES: We need divine intervention. They want to chisel Amendment 42 into Colorado’s constitution where it doesn’t belong.

GOD: What on earth are you talking about?

MOSES: An annual minimum wage increase in stone for eternity!

GOD: When inflation and recession come, it will be a catastrophe!

MOSES: It’s a plague we’ll face every year.

GOD: We can’t let the people make this mistake. Go. Spread the word. Vote no on 42!

  1. Expose the Republican Pedaphile Scandal says:

All I can think of is Mel Brooks’s Moses having to modify his statement from 15 to 10 commandments upon dropping one of the tablets and breaking it…

Why are there pedaphile Republicans in congress?

  2. Dot+Connector says:

After seeing this foolishness, I will get Wikipedia to place that organization’s name under their entry for “Wack-Job”.

  3. carollt says:

Jesus himself would vote for an increase in the minimum wage. The only folks who would not want the minimum wage increased are the greedy corporate types who would like all of us to work for $1.00 a day.

I guess that would be most, if not all, of the Bush crowd.

And people really have to wonder why there are fewer Atheists in prison…

Why does anyone believe such utter nonsense when there is no proof or valid evidence that there are gods or other supernatural forces out there that have an opinion on human atrocities that they clearly cannot or will not stop. Such is the lunacy of organized religion. The same people who claim to have a monopoly on morality when they do not exhibit one ounce of ethical behaviour. It’s dangerous nonsense what these hypocrites sell. Period.

The arrogance and hubris of those that think they know the Supreme Entity’s desires and plans just boggles me… But not as much as those who take them at their word and act on their misguided statements. Of course, it could be just shallow manipulation rather than hubris… That somehow makes it worse.

God, by definition, is indefinable. Think on that.

And a bonus question: What is the one thing that an omnipotent, omniscient being CANNOT do?

  23. It's Hard Out Here for a Chimp says:

As a Coloradoan, the fact that there are folks out here like that is embarassing. This state is a little weird, although there are enclaves of radical fundamentalism and nouveau riche republicans; the state now has a Democratic state legislature and is about to elect a Democratoc Governor.

The Colorado Springs area is detached from reality (and IMO, Christianity) and the bizarre and rightwing crap that comes out of there doesn’t represent the majority. Think about the progressives that live in the Springs- they’re REALLY isolated. It’s interesting, though; the gay community is really vocal down there- amazing strength.

I would LOVE to see the DNC pick Denver as the convention site- what a slap in the face of Dobson and his misguided flock.

Pretty much the answer I came up with. It would be unable to experience unrelated, unforeseen events.

I like to think that’s where we come in. The exception to prove the rule that is the existence of the universe. Not saying this is the answer to my question, each person is unique and will come to their own solution.

Or we’re just really advanced bacteria with thumbs. Your decision. :)

So…since we have not heard from “God” on a television commercial regarding global warming, killing innocent people in other countries, torture, pillaging the fisc, accepting bribes, etc., these repugnuts must believe God is for them. Cause we all know God makes his wishes known through advertising!!!

    Comment by Zooey — October 14, 2006 @ 11:30 am

Another good one. I would counter-debate with the fact that freewill itself is a philosophical concept and ask “How would you know if your freewill is hindered or removed?” It is easily within an omnipotent being’s ability to make you think you have freewill.

I believe I have the freewill in question, but have no proof of such. Until otherwise proven I shall act as I do possess freewill and say that you are right, Zooey. :)

I gotta say the ad is soooo bad that it’s good …. funny good, that is. I mean they’ve actually turned a serious topic into a complete joke. And while I’m not Christian I’m sure some religious nuts probably think it’s blasphemous too.

  49. Bluestocking says:

My guess is that this sort of advertising is going to end up backfiring on the Stop42 crowd — at least, I hope so. This is so blatantly, pathetically cheesy and melodramatic that it’s almost laughable and I can’t see why anyone with a functioning brain cell would remotely consider taking it seriously. Do they even make an effort to offer up any hard data to support their position that this would be disastrous for the economy? No (one is inclined to wonder if indeed they have any)…all they’ve done is create a message implying, and none too subtly, that a minimum wage increase is somehow Against God’s Will and that this is all the argument that they should need to discourage people from voting for it. Puh-leeeeeeeeze…

  50. Jules says:

    Yikes –

It is your beverage of choice – “SO SAYETH I”

God just told me that. Yeah, he speaks to me. I just relay the messages.

  53. Jules says:

Yikes – it is 5:00 somewhere – or is the saying it is noon somewhere?

OK – do you have a problem with alcohol if you drink before noon or after 5?

Or do you only have a problem with alcohol if you are a republican convicted of accepting bribes or molesting little boys?

Unless we change direction, the oh-so-politically-unstable tripod of the Christian Taliban, the neocons, and the plutocracy will collapse in such a way as to send the world into a downturn from which it will take us decades to recover.

  56. Sharon Cox says:

Interesting coincidence … I happened to hear Chris Rock’s routine about minimum wage on one of the XM satellite radio’s comedy channels a day or so ago.

” Hey, how you doin’ ?”

“You know how the f#ck I’m doin’ – man ! … I’m doin’ BAD !!! … You are paying me minimum wage !!!”

I hope either he or Jon Stewart get a chance to see this piece of crap “Stop 42″ ad.

Considering it’s we godless folk who value and advance Science to the point of creating medicine, shouldn’t it be the ‘godful’ who stay away from our “godless inventions”? Sholdn’t they go sit in some Middle Eastern desert and wait for their god to give them these cures? I would suggest they start out in Iraq. : )

I was in the store early this morning, and some woman at the other end of teh aisle I was in, just asks me if I understand “what these numbers are” that had been tagged on some item she was regarding. I told her that I did not. Instead of using her brain to figure out that she should go ask someone who worked there, she actually said, outloud “I guess it just wasn’t meant for me to know what these numbers mean.” She stood there and stared at them, as if waiting for a god to bless her with this knowledge. A few minutes later, she just sighed and walked away. I was amused and repulsed both equally.

But then you never know what will prompt the mentally challenged to vote and how they will view things.

I’m glad to know that proposition 42 is going to pass. Whenever I see some ad like that I always want to know who’s behind it.

Well, I believe this one is being put out by the chamber of commerce, although in this version of the ad that doesn’t appear at the bottom.

High praise. Thanks. I guess it really comes down to the fact that how you live and what you believe are decisions, not necessarily fact forced upon you. Without that we are simply biological automatons… and I’d rather think I’m using what little freewill we seem to have these days anyway.

I must be missing something. As an atheist and a person strongly opposed to the current administration and Republican control of all branches of government, I was ready to be incensed by this ad.

But I’m sorry, I don’t see this as a religous nut ad. The TP headline is absurdly misleading. The ad is a poorly attempt at a comedic approach (as is the toilet paper ad on the same site), but all of you are overreaching terribly.

The content of the ad is the claim that an annual indexed minimum wage should not be etched into the state constitution. That’s a valid point of view and has nothing to do with religion. They used Moses and the tablets as a metaphor for “etching it in stone”, i.e., the constitution.

The counterargument would be that such a thing is better inscribed in state legistation, rather than the constitution. I tend to agree with that, as constitutional ammendments should not be done lightly.

So unless I’m missing something, I find this entire thread terribly disappointing. There are enough egregious missteps, corruptions, failures, and disasters of the Right without concocting something like this.

All this says is that the No On 42 team has hired a pretty lousy ad agency.

There are similarities. Personally, I see it paralleling Fascism in Nazi Germany’. He thought for a minute and then nodded, as if to say that that was also a valid consideration. 121. Jason+M.+Hendler says:

Gather round children, time for another lesson ….

The US is just crossing the 300,000,000 population mark, which makes us less than 5% of the world’s population. Last time I checked, we possess approx. 50% of the world’s wealth. The inequity is a powerful motivator for the other 95% of the world to want to come to America. Raising the minimum wage, with no corresponding requirement of workers to raise their wealth creating contribution to an economy, just makes the attraction to come here greater.

Already, this situation is beyond any government or society to control / correct, because the mission of public education has been changed from development of individuals to generate wealth for themselves, their families and their communities, to mindless indoctrination into communist ideals of handing the futures over to a nanny-state government. The US reached high on self reliance, and will now crash back down as public education has gutted our ability to even sustain these heights, must less reach higher.

  122. unbelievable says:

    Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 15, 2006 @ 3:35 pm

Jason you are utterly callous, selfish and inhuman. You prove it more and more everytime you post.

Calling yourself a Christian is a lie. Christians believe in charity, that which you just posted in opposition of.

The solution to the problem is not to starve the people who are already here – but to REDUCE the population explosion by teaching people responsible and ethical behavior in regard to procreation.

The best way to do this is to give women equality. When woman who are treated as equals to men, countries flourish. When they are treated like second-class citizens, countries see population increases, higher poverty, higher crime rates and higher death rates. Check out any country in Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia where the correlation between the treatment of women and the growth of the population is consistent.

The Bible says that you should be fruitful and multiply, doesn’t it. Either cling to that archaic book and shut up about population growth – OR start thinking for yourself, instead of ABOUT yourself…

  123. ffakr says:

I love the line about ‘what happens if there is inflation or a recession?!? DISASTEROUS!!!’

Seriously. If there was inflation (and yes there IS inflation you morons), wouldn’t people need to make more money? It struck me a few seconds after hearing this stupid commercial. They are saying that people won’t need to make more money if everything costs more. Let me make their commercial more clear..
‘what if we pay people more and then, at some point in the future.. stuff costs more.. What will they do if they have more money when stuff costs more..? DISASTEROUS!!!’

  124. ffakr says:

    Jason+M+Hendler makes two factual points.
    1) we are approaching 5% of the world population (not exactly but close enough) and..
    2) we control 50% of the wealth.

He see’s this as a problem because he claims, without support, ” the mission of public education has been changed from development of individuals to generate wealth for themselves ”

Please, explain this to me Jason. 5% of the world population controls 50% of the world assets and out beggest problem is we aren’t teaching our children to control MORE of the world’s assets? Very christian of you.

Further, you claim the problem is that we control so much of World’s assets and that causes everyone else want to migrate to the US.. but you lament the fact that we aren’t sufficiently teaching our children to control MORE of the world’s assets?

Further, your claim that minimum wages force people to earn more without any contribution to society. This is completely moronic. If this was a valid argument, there would be no one in this country that is underpaid.
Let me lay this out slowly for you. If people are underpaid, than minimum wage simply fixes this. If a minimum wage is wrong and serves no purpose than no one must be underpaid (particularly on the low end of the pay scale).
You argue that pay should be tied direcly to contribution? You seem to imply that this is the case NOW since an increase in minimum wage would change this. Does Paris Hilton contribute more to society than a nurse, or a teacher, or a policeman, or a firefighter.. or a soldier? Does a Senator who accepts millions in Bribes (Cunningham (R)) and earns a salary of nearly $200,000 per year contribute more to society than someone who works two full time, low paying jobs to keep a roof over their kids heads? Not only does the later provide needed services at their jobs but they keep their family off the streets which in turn keeps our society more stable.

    Nice try.

    Dear Unbelievable,

I nearly always agree with your posts and your passion for the ideas that are dear to you. Sometimes it seems to me that God is not paying attention to our plight here on the blue orb. I cannot prove that HE/SHE does exist to myself, much less to a “Unbeliever” like you. Fifty years of study and investigation has however not kept me from having faith in something larger than me. After a priest questioned Joseph Campbell”s certainty of God’s existence, he said he could not verify it , but replied that’s what faith is about and it is a powerful force here on Earth. God, I suspect, does not lke what HE/SHE sees here and probably prays for us. Hope your students never stop the journey….Floor

    Hi circus,

Haven’t seen you around lately. Spam filters or life? : )

From my perspective, a complete lack of involvement or assistance or intelligence in the system leads me to conclude that there is none. Therefore, better to do something to solve the problem rather than pray to something that either does not exist or does not care. If there is a god, it is indifferent and frankly, not worthy of praise. I’m just sick of people using their religion to do damage and be corrupt. Or, to be lazy and allow the corruption to continue (a friend of mine frequently says “So-and-so will get his in the after life, so I don’t need to intervene” Drives me nuts).

I do know that there are Christians or spiritual people of other beliefs who use their faith in a positive way. Unfortunately you guys are the tiny minority, and the other end of the spectrum is doing horrific damage because “faith” allows them. I see that as a dangerous thing. And I cannot be silent, because I do not believe in after lives.

We all have brains – whether or not you believe they were give or you accept that they evolved. Either way, we should use them. Especially 3 weeks from Tuesday…

The invitation to God’s Table was meant to be just that..an invitation, and not this gestapo garbage of “Strap em down and stick the IV in, and force it in” Maybe our national nightmare will soon be over. Keep the faith or, well, you know what I mean…Circus

Think Progress summarizes: Polls continue to show overwhelming bipartisan support for six state initiatives that would increase the minimum wage and index it to inflation, including 73 percent of voters in Montana, 73 percent in Ohio, and 77 percent in Nevada. Opponents of a wage hike are getting desperate. In Colorado, Stop 42, the group opposed to the initiative, is taking a “biblical” approach in their campaign against a minimum wage increase. A new ad depicts a “Moses” character speaking to the voice of God in the Rocky Mountains. “We need divine intervention,” Moses says. God responds: “We can’t let the people make this mistake. Go. Spread the word. Vote no on 42!” (The group has its work cut out for itself — 74 percent of Colorado voters supporting raising the minimum wage.) [...]
