Last night on CBS’s 60 Minutes, David Kuo, a former White House deputy on faith-based issues, explained that the Bush White House has consistently subverted its so-called “values” agenda in favor of crass political gain. “This message that has been sent out to Christians for a long time now: that Jesus came primarily for a political agenda, and recently primarily a right-wing political agenda - as if this culture war is a war for God. And it’s not a war for God, it’s a war for politics,” said Kuo.
Interviewer Lesley Stahl asked Kuo whether he thinks the White House is going to view his book as a betrayal and may go after him. Kuo responded:
“Of course they will. I can hear the attacks, right? ‘Oh, he’s really a liberal.’ or, ‘Oh, maybe that brain tumor really messed up his head.’ Or, you know, ‘He’s an idealist.’”
The assaults have already started coming in from the White House’s conservative allies. Christian evangelical leaders James Dobson, Tony Perkins, and Chuck Colson were to quick to criticize Kuo while defending Bush.
In the latest attack, an article entitled “David Kuo: An Addition to the Axis of Evil,” Jason T. Christy, the publisher of The Church Report (and once nominated to head the Bush-friendly Christian Coalition), lobs many of the accusations that Kuo predicted:
Don’t be fooled by Kuo; he is someone who has been described as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Don’t let his smarmy tones and pouty eyes fool you. Having done campaign work for several Kennedys, having contradicted himself and his own letters, Kuo is being used to try and prop up the liberal left, to breathe life into lifeless campaigns and his master literary work is a mere smokescreen. Questioning the faith and motivation of this administration is wrong.
When he was young, Kuo interned for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and was a campaign volunteer for Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA), who retired from Congress in 1998. In his professional life, Kuo worked for leading conservatives John Ashcroft and Bill Bennett.

October 16th, 2006 at 3:40 pmJames Dobson, Tony Perkins, and Chuck Colson have also launched criticisms of Kuo while defending Bush. - - Apparently Bush is omnipotent. This White House can mock these guys until the Rapture and they’ll just bend over and say, “thank you sir, may I have another.”

October 16th, 2006 at 3:42 pmThe man’s name is Christy. Christ-y, for pete’s sakes.
I mean, I hate to split hairs, but the irony is as delicious as the swiftboating is transparent here.
Adhere to my rule: the more the administrtion tries to sink someone, the more important the things they say about the administration are. Let’s see, turn around time on this one was less than 24 hours? I’d say Kuo is the real deal. Welcome back to reality, sir.
October 16th, 2006 at 3:44 pmThat’s quite disturbing.
More than disturbing. A nation that ceases to question the faith and motivation of its government has given up their freedom.

These so-called Christians are taking part in fooling the “believers” in the name of power.
October 16th, 2006 at 3:48 pm#6, Ugh, that’s what I picked up on first. Sorry, Christy, but we can question anything we damn well please, because we’re Americans.
October 16th, 2006 at 3:49 pmQuestioning the faith and motivation of this administration is wrong.
So much for the First Commandment, “Thou shall have no other Gods before me”.
October 16th, 2006 at 3:50 pmYes, and Mr Kuo has also been testing nukular detonations in his backyard.

Questioning the faith and motivation of this administration is wrong.
So he has swarmy tones, pouty eyes, worked for politicians(Dems and Repubs), writes a book about things he believes in and questions the faith and motivation of an administration. So Christy, and probably other Cons, thinks these qualities make someone evil. Somehow I don’t think fascist-gutter-slime is a strong enough description for these a-holes.

Nitpicker,

Is that really written in the bible? What about all the long-haired hippie Jesus pictures then? Even on the cross in churches he has long hair. Just another contradiction in the book that has all the confusio…..I mean answers.

October 16th, 2006 at 4:18 pmThe nerve of David Kuo! How dare he criticize the White House for calling Dobson, Perkins, etc. a bunch of nuts? I can see why they’d be upset with him for that. If they want to be called nuts and get used like a box of Kleenex on a cheap hotel nightstand, that’s their business and he has no right to interfere.
October 16th, 2006 at 4:19 pmSounds desperate to me. “DONT LISTEN TO HIM. HE IS CRAZY”
October 16th, 2006 at 4:24 pmI thought the Newsweek interview was very telling of his character. It sounds to me like he wrote this book to make his own positions clear and he’s surprised that people have jumped on it.
I especially like his call for Christians to take a two year “fast” from politics and instead of contributing to political causes, to spend the money on the homeless and the poor. THAT’S why the “conservatives”, the people who he thought were on his side are freaking out! Can you imagine how much money those rich Republican Christians dish out?
October 16th, 2006 at 4:25 pmToday, it is a given that if you cross this Administration you will be attacked without mercy.

October 16th, 2006 at 4:39 pmAs for a more frivolous sidelight, the long hair issue, an anthropological story that came out in the past few years suggested Jesus wore his hair cropped shorter, in the custom of Roman subjects of the day. But who knows and who cares?
Jesus is also recorded as telling a rich man he would get into heaven if he would give away all that he had and followed him. The rich man sadly left Jesus. Now fast-forward to modern-day Washington. What do you see those rich guys doing with all they have?

On a more serious note, I do often wonder if those on the religious right actually read the book they profess to follow. I’m guessing the answer is “no” since so few of them got the point and supoort a party that does very little that could be considered Christian.

That question is so pathetic. By asking it that way they seem to expect that all their readers will vote for Republilcans. Will these people ever learn that Repubs do not wear their religion on their sleeves because they are righteous but because they are using people of faith?

I love that quote
October 16th, 2006 at 5:59 pmFunny how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Christians 1800 years later are still 2 faced, backstabbing, bigoted, simple minded and still pointing fingers at each other saying how bad they are. When not pointing at the rest of the world.
Unbelievable nice quotes
I do not completly agree with the quotes (as I think religion is not all that bad if people would actually act on Jesus’s words for once in thier lives) but they are good food for thought. If people would learn that following Jesus means you should respect, love, and honor everyone on this earth and judge people on thier character instead of frivilace things like gender, race, or sexual orientation this world will become a better place. This is what I believe is the reason I am liberal I guess…
October 16th, 2006 at 6:00 pmEven though I can’t carry out this act within my firm, outside of the firm my plan is to inform as many people as I can about liberal ideas and views. I refuse to see liberals win the majority of the house. Our biblical way of life is counting on Nov 7. If your party had once ounce of morality maybe I would join. Your party angers me because you defy God’s word. Even though the act is considered sinful, don’t you find it coincidental that Foley’s issues were revealed around campaign time. Liberals, have you know shame. I will continue to pray and fast to ensure that we hold the house. Your ideals are despicable and disgusting. Mr. Kuo is just a pawn lobbied by liberals to defame the republican party. I’m tired of you liberals. I will pray dearly for each of your souls. Remember, Jesus said, “vegeance is mine”. Your party will pay for your unrighteousness. Shame on you guys. I really believe that liberals don’t love Jesus. Your party is blasphemous to the word of god. Save your souls.

October 16th, 2006 at 6:01 pmWayne that is unfair
Their are good, liberal christians out thier helping the world. Bill Moyers, and Robin Meyers come to mind. Christianity is not the evil hurting people, it is the FUNDAMENTALISTS taking the Bible literally without understanding the words of Jesus Christ.
Oh and if you are wondering, I am an atheist, but I do not believe it is right to condemn a religion because of the actions of a few imbeciles like Dobson, and Falwell…

I am sure there are good individual christians, just as there are good individuals of most every religion. My beef is with Organized Religion, not just Chistians.
How could the catholic church cover up child molestors? Same way they murdered innocents in their inquisitions.
Look at all the blood shed by christians who persecuted any belief different from theirs over the centuries.
Any group, and I include all religions, that have the blood of innocents on their hands, can claim to be of God all they want, but by their deeds, people should know better.

Thanks. I’m pretty anti-religion, because while I agree with what you said, I think that the reality is that religion does far more harm than good.
Personally, I think everyone should have his or her own ideology, and not follow some prescribed morality that someone else wrote.
We really don’t need someone to tell us how to behave. We know when we’ve behaved badly… Just like our cousins the chimpanzees do without weekly chruch service.
When the majority of Christians act like Christians, I’ll leave religion alone. Until then, I’m an advocate for holding it accountable for its actions.

Well, that makes sense - to think people who only eat vegetables are an abomination while supporting war, rape and incest. Oh the hypocrisy of Christianity would surely make Jesus spin in his grave…

October 16th, 2006 at 7:32 pmQuestioning the faith and motivation of this administration is wrong.
I don’t question their faith. Not only don’t I question it, I don’t give a frig about it. I don’t care if they pray to purple zebras. All I care about is that they do a competent job of governing the country and upholding the secular Constitution. Am I wrong to think GWB put his hand on a bible and swore to uphold the Constitution? If he is true to his faith, then he believes holding his hand on the bible and making an oath is a binding action, therefore upholding the oath takes precedence over his personal religious beliefs.
David Kuo, a former White House deputy on faith-based issues, explained that the Bush White House has consistently subverted its so-called “values†agenda in favor of crass political gain. “This message that has been sent out to Christians for a long time now…”
Am I the only person furious that one of the first actions of BushCo was to implement and fund, with tax dollars, a “faith based initiative”? Staffing it, of course, with proponents of the favored religion? Is this not a clear violation of the Constitution?
As seen in the above quote, even Kuo, former deputy for this program, shows concern only for the “message sent out to Christians”. What about a concern about the rest of us? Or don’t we count as Americans? What about Jews, Muslims, atheists, agnostics, Buddhist, and non-believers? What about the 75% of Christians whose beliefs don’t match the flavor preferred by “evangelicals”? I don’t think Mormons, Catholics, and many flavors of Protestants would be in agreement with the implementation of an intolerant theocracy. We’ve been doing pretty well with a secular government for better than two centuries, it seems to me. We don’t need Darryl and friends to “improve” it.
I for one am willing to fight and die to prevent their ilk from screwing up my country.
People shake their heads in wonder that GWB is now gutting the rights in the Constitution. Why is this a suprise? He’s been pulling this almost since the day he stepped in office.
October 16th, 2006 at 7:34 pmDavid Kuo here - I guess I’m the latest member of the Axis of Evil… I don’t know about you but the thing that I like the most about the Jason Christy story is how very much like Jesus he sounded. You know, love your enemy, turn the other cheek, that stuff - I felt that love in the Christy article. Too bad all of this kind of makes my point that Christians have been seduced by politics, trading God in for some political power. Thanks for your support. DK

October 16th, 2006 at 8:33 pm“Johndrama, I will. I’m not angry or agitated at your sarcasm. Jesus will have the last laugh November 7, 2006. Didn’t know Jesus was a Republican. Does “turn the other cheek” refer to pubescent asscheeks, or what? (Sorry, just joining in on the non-serious side for a change.)
Okay Darryl, I note that in your proposal above, there is a consequence if Republicans retain majority but no consequence if they don’t hardly fair. It is particularly cowardly in that it is always easier for incumbents to win than for challengers to win, thus turning over so many seats is not at all an even battle. If Repubs retain power, this hardly suffices as a sign of a Biblical miracle.
I look at it another way. If you are a TRUE BELIEVER, and you have the certainty of Jesus in your heart that Jesus is a Republican and the Jesus party will prevail, then failure of the Jesus party to prevail will be proof that your religion is false.
Therefore, if you have true faith, you will agree as follows:
If the Democrats pick up majority in either the house or senate, you will renounce Jesus and proclaim Christianity as false. You will do so here on this blog 23 days from today.
If you decline this challenge, then clearly your faith is weak.
Will you stand up for Jesus, so that he may stand up for you?
October 16th, 2006 at 8:45 pmMouse Story .
A mouse
looked through the crack
in the wall
to see the farmer and his wife
open a package.
“What food
might this contain?”
The mouse wondered -
he was devastated
to discover
it was a mousetrap.
Retreating to the farmyard,
the mouse
proclaimed the warning.
“There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!”
The chicken clucked
and scratched,
raised her head
and said,
“Mr. Mouse,
I can tell
this is a grave concern to you
but it is of no consequence to me.
I cannot be bothered by it.”
The mouse
turned to the pig
and told him,
“There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!”
The pig sympathized,
but said,
“I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse,
but there is nothing
I can do about it but pray.
Be assured
you are in my prayers.”
The mouse turned to the cow and said,
“There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!”
The cow said,
“Wow, Mr. Mouse.
I’m sorry for you,
but it’s no skin off my nose.”
So, the mouse
returned to the house,
head down and dejected,
to face the farmer’s mousetrap– alone.
That very night
a sound was heard
throughout the house —
like the sound
of a mousetrap
catching its prey.
The farmer’s wife
rushed to see
what was caught.
In the darkness,
she did not see
it was a venomous snake
whose tail the trap had caught.
The snake
bit the farmer’s wife.
The farmer
rushed her to the hospital
and she returned home
with a fever.
Everyone knows
you treat a fever
with fresh chicken soup,
so the farmer took his hatchet
to the farmyard
for the soup’s
main ingredient.
But his wife’s sickness
continued,
so friends and neighbors
came to sit with her
around the clock.
To feed them,
the farmer butchered the pig.
The farmer’s wife
did not get well;
she died.
So many people came
for her funeral,
the farmer
had the cow slaughtered
to provide enough meat
for all of them.
The mouse looked upon it all
from his crack in the wall
with great sadness.
So, the next time
you hear someone
is facing a problem
and think it doesn’t
concern you,
remember —
when one of us is threatened,
we are all at risk.
We are all involved
in this journey
called life.
We must keep an eye out
for one another
and make an extra effort to
encourage one another.
REMEMBER:
EACH OF US
IS A VITAL THREAD
IN ANOTHER PERSON’S TAPESTRY;
OUR LIVES
ARE WOVEN TOGETHER
FOR A REASON.
One of the best things

October 16th, 2006 at 8:48 pmA man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem While they were there, the wife paaway.
The undertaker told the husband, “You can have her shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land , for $150.”
The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home.
The undertaker asked, “Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $150?”
October 16th, 2006 at 8:49 pmThe man replied, “Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just can’t take that chance!

October 16th, 2006 at 8:52 pmDaryll need professional help–to think you are even capable of getting out of bed in the morning much less getting to work–you are one bizarre individual. I watched the interview last night on 60 minutes, and I wondered how long it would take for the White House to disavow this poor guy with nasty comments. He is no liberal–he is trying to set the record straight. Unlike the rest of the inmates in the asylum, he knows it is just wrong and he has the integrity to stand up and admit it.
I have a lot of respect for him and I hope he beats the horrible cancer that he has. Wouldn’t our country be much better off if the idiots in the White House started to admit they were wrong, and it is time to find a new solution to the many messes they have gotten us in.
The fools in the White House aren’t christians–they are using the fundies and evangelicals for political gain–they are to be disposed of after elections–in other words, grab their money and support and support–like a one-night stand!!

October 17th, 2006 at 7:45 amWhy do we call them “right-wingers”? They make such cute little Soviets! Kuo is now an un-person. The AUMF wasn’t a vote for the war, according to Bush, but now it is. Clinton was wagging the dog bombing Afghanistan, now he “didn’t do anything about terror.”
Cute little Soviets. They believe what they’re told until they’re told to believe something else. Then, they believe that.
