Them getting political is like Ted Kennedy singing on the radio.

Guaranteed to tickle your funny bone.

  2. Jay Randal says:

Dixie Chicks are cool, but Bush will have the movie banned from most theaters probably?!

  3. Sharon Cox says:

The Dixie Chick’s are better than cool, Jay…They are strong talented young ladies with strong feeling’s about our country..Unlike many in the public view today they have refused to go along with the reich winged crap…I have been a fan of theirs since the beginning and will continue to support any artest that speek’s out against this terrible regime in power..Blessings

  4. Tundra says:

I don’t know it just kind of drives me a little nute. I read an article somewhere where the Dixie Chicks were complaining that people choose not to listen to them or buy their records. They felt that their right to free speech was being taken away.

I think it’s far from the case at all. If you don’t like what someone stands for you don’t have to support their career. That would be like Rush Limbaugh deciding to cut a record and when you choose not to buy it (For whatever reason you want) being accused of trampling his rights. If radio stations listeners call and say “we won’t listen to you if you play music by him” they should not play that music, it’s their business model and they should please their customers.

    Just my 2 cents.

  5. USAF_vet says:

I still can’t believe how bent out of shape so many people got over “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.”

  6. barfly says:

Sorry to distract, but Lamont/Lieberman are debating right now:

  7. Mark says:

#4 cd sales are very much tied to exposure. And after the incident C&W stations stopped playing the music, and have stayed away. So in essence they have been punished by the media outlets for speaking their minds. The fans would probably being buying the new disc if they were still getting the exposure.

  8. Cris says:

I saw the trailer at the movies this last week. Little did people know that they would end up with the same opinon? How insightfull of them! I thought the comment was great at the time and still is!

  9. kelso says:

The people that stopped listening to their music weren’t fans of the musicians themselves. They supported the Dixie Chicks country, red white & blue, faux patriotism image.

So they didn’t lose any fans, they lost a bunch of people who pretended to be their fans. I own their latest CD, it’s good. These chicks have talent, unlike most country mainstream country acts.

  10. Tundra says:

    #7,

The radio stations were responding to their listeners when they pulled them. If a radio station thought they would get 1 extra listener for playing them they would. The stations responded to their audience.

The Dixie Chicks choose not to. I mean how do you as a country artist say something that a large group of your fans will object to, then expect everyone to judge you on the merits of your singing?

  11. Tundra says:

    #9

They supported the Dixie Chicks country, red white & blue, faux patriotism image.

Yup, that’s what they sold the people, that’s what the people bought (regardless that’s what people thought, and the Dixie Chicks had no problem cashing those checks from those people either). They are guilty of false advertising.

  12. Above+the+Clouds says:

The Dixie Chicks, Michael Moore, and Barbara Streisand are not what’s wrong with America. How many more years and terms (and scandals) will it take for this Republican House, Republican Senate, Republican Executive Branch, and all three supported by a Republican appointed Supreme Court to get around to doing anything correct? The truth matters. Who can trust the neocons to get it right after they’ve gotten it wrong so many times?

  13. Will says:

Ahem… Radio stations do not pay attention to their listeners any more than television networks listen to their viewers. The RIAA owns the playlists that the radio stations play from. If the RIAA doesn’t want it, it doesn’t get played.. End of story. Those stations that try to buck that system don’t hang around all that long or move to XM. The letters people write to their networks are justification for whatever the networks might be thinking of doing.

Other than that, DC are musicians. They have the option to speak out or not, and those so-called fans have the right to throw out their albums if they speak out. Rights go both ways. If you aren’t prepared for the consequences of what you’re going to say, then don’t say it. The public reaction to what they said wasn’t right or wrong. Your right to say what you think goes hand in hand with someone elses right to not like you for saying it. You can’t have one without the other. Anyone who says differently is trying to sell you some BS.

For the record, I agree with what she said about Bush. Hell, I’m ashamed that Bush is included when I talk abut the Human Race. I like some of their music. I think Toby Keith is a stupid, ignorant, nationalistic freak… and I like some of his music. As for the rest, that will sort itself out later.

  14. Mark says:

#10 I Have never considered the Chicks COuntry. Heck I never have considered any of the new country to be country. Guys like Toby Keith, Keith Urban, Shania Twain, Garth Brooks and all the rest are more descended from the Eagles and Flying Burrito Brothers, which I consider to be country rock. They are only loosely descended from Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, George Jones etc… people whom I consider to be real country music. The new breed simply puts on their cowboy hats, sing with a twang and record in Nashville, in other words they are all projecting that country image.

  15. Zimzone says:

    #13, Will,
    Good post.
The RIAA is also the entity prosecuting people for downloading music. What they say goes, period.
I respect what they’ve done as musicians & I don’t disagree with what they said about Bush.
Toby Keith is an arrogant, stupid redneck. I also happen to think his music sucks, along with ‘Reba’. (Yuck!)
Then we have Sara Evans. Anyone who has Tom DeLay speak for them should just retire.

  16. ForTruth says:

I’m not a country fan, however, I have seen these ladies perform on TV. I am very impressed with their talent and musical ability.

They were willing to risk a lot by speaking out against Bush. They have lost some fans over it, and maybe some money. That says a lot.

  17. ForTruth says:

    Nice analysis Mark.

  18. Dan W. says:

You have a broken link to the trailer…

  19. Ben says:

5 Reviews? that is what you call rave reviews? Normally Rotten Tomatoes posts at least 100 reviews if the movie is of any consequence. This one isn’t.

TP doing what they do best, being dishonest.

  20. Movie Marketing Madness » Free Shut Up & Sing screening says:

[...] If you’re in the Washington, DC area, Think Progress is hosting a screening of the Dixie Chicks documentary Shut Up & Sing. I haven’t seen it pop-up elsewhere but this could be part of a larger strategy of appealing to liberal blogs and their readers for a movie that deals with free speech and other such issues. [...]

  21. Scott says:

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition, what a joke! The Dixie Chicks couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag, but they love to stand at a far pretend to be tough. Like I said, they’re an American joke.

  22. Destardi says:

    scott, scott, scott.

    An American joke?

Naw, what an American joke would be, is having a former male cheerleader for a President. Having American citizens vote for a guy who was a MALE CHEERLEADER over a man who volunteered to serve his country in Vietnam, THAT is an American joke.

Having a load of hate, death threats, and mean criticisms rain down on you because of one sentence…(freedom of speech much?) and yet you STILL hang in there hold true to your RIGHT TO EXPRESS YOURSELF is NOT an “american joke.”

  23. Scott says:

Destardi, have the right as an American to say what I want, it’s called freedom of speech.

You say John Kerry would have been a better President simply because he served in Vietnam?….I guess he would have been better than Bill Clinton as well.

Destardi, did you know during the Vietnam war John Kerry jumped off his swift boat leaving them behind and ran after a Vietcong teenager and blew the guts out of the teen?

John Kerry has personally killed a lot of people and now he’s just a rich multi-millionaire.

Dixie Chicks, I hope your new documentary does well, but I don’t think it will, but at least you’ll be paying taxes to Washington DC which helps President Bush and I can’t thank you enough.

  24. Scott says:

    Why are we in Iraq?

Watch this 5 minute video and find out Dixie Chicks.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moirgVgbEQ4

  25. Ken Eissner says:

The Dixie Chicks comment was blown way out of proportion by right-wing radio. They are to ones that who fanned the contraversy. Guess who owns many of the country radio stations that stopped playing the Chicks music? Yes, it’s Clear Channel, whose former co-chairman is a large Bush fundraiser and family friend; also they own most of the right-wing talk radio stations that fanned the Chicks contraversy.

The playing field was stacked against the Chicks. The radio talkers had a good one on their hads, the biggest country act speaks out against the president, they must be brought down.

I have seen the trailer, and it looks good. I am a new fan, who went to my first Chicks concert in DC, and it was fantastic. They lost some redneck fans, but gained some new tolerant fans.

  26. Scott says:

Ken Eissner, you said the band has lost some redneck fans, but gained some new tolerant fans.

Would you be a tolerant fan if an artist you liked spoke out against a politician you liked?

If someone has a product to sell and they tell eveyone what their politics are then wouldn’t you think they would lose some fans?

If the owner of a fast food restaurant made a public statment by putting up a banner that put down the President don’t you think people that supported that President would not eat their anylonger?

The reason we’re in Iraq is because we’re taking the fight to the people that want to hurt us and we are winning.

Last I heard hundreds of thosands more Islamo Fascist have been killed then the amount of Americans.

Look at North Korea, the Clinton administration handed a basketball signed by Michael Jordan to a man that is 5′2″ and I’ll bet he gave the ball to some kids so they could kick it around.

So wake up Dems, your brand of poltics is a loser.

  27. Marjorie says:

Just about all my life, I made the same observation that this movie makes.

I am Canadian. I’ve always pointed out that Americans claim to have the most freedom in the world, yet as soon as anyone disagrees with popular (or Christian) opinion, out come the death threats. When it gets really bad, the assassination attempts start.

Here in Canada, we have free speech, and you don’t get death threats or attempts on your life, no matter how unpopular your views might be. THAT is truly free speech.

I don’t mean for this to sound like a competition. Freedom in both Canada and the U.S. is terrific! But be aware of the consequences of voicing unpopular opinion before deciding how “free” any nation really is.

  28. Dana Darlene Hawley says:

i can say that i am one of dixie chicks biggest fans and i cant wait till there movie comes out “shut up & sing” ive always loved there singing and to the people who sent the threat letters why could you do such a thing anyways love yah dixie chicks and love all ur songs!

  29. insight says:

I believe scott is paid by the right wing to post the bullet points that are given to defend an obviously detached executive branch.

  30. insight says:

The question asked was why are we in Iraq should be why are we in Iraq and not in Afgahnastan? and why did the presidents call off the CIA task force to search and destroy Osama Binladen?

  31. Jorge says:

Hey Scott, I just watched what you say is the justification of the USA (Yes, Capital Letters) Destruction of the legitimate government that existed prior to our invasion? Sorry, all the ones mentioned have made BILLIONS already on this one and if you check out historical facts you will see that they have done the same in other “Conflicts” sponsored by our government in the name of FREEDOM. Check out the Democrat Party President of the late 60’s and his involvement with Haliburton……Deja’vu
    to you.

  32. Kimberly says:

I have to say that now a days more and more Entertainment figures are taking a political stance. I don’t believe the Dixie Chicks should have been treated the way they were for voicing their opinion. America is so proud of their rights but yet they back-lashed against someone who was only expressing their ‘freedom of speech’ Not everyone is happy with the war going on. I for one don’t agree or disagree with the war – I am just sad for the Canadian lives that are being lost over there.

  33. Paulina Charvet says:

I just returned to the USA after two years of traveling around the world. I can honestly say that for some reason the “contraversy” of the Dixie Chicks went unnoticed prior to my departure. Now as I return, hear and see what they went through. I feel it to be absurd. Through my fortunate experience I have been enlighted and recognize that the world is beautiful and the people on this world regardless of race, color, religion origin wonderful. I have been blessed and I salute the Dixie Chicks for standing up for what they believe in. As the consideration of a wall is being erected along Mexico so is the practice of racism. As American’s we are priveledged but as for Human Kindness, on every continent, in every place of religion, in every country with cultural practices.

I thank the world for sharing their kindness, homes, culture, religious beliefs with me…for in doing so I am a better person. If we could all vote, wish and practice the concept of World Peace, our World of Human Kindness would be a better place.

Dixie Chicks as you speak out, realize that you are speaking out for a population, for Americans and for a cause. You are speaking out for a World Peace. I encourage you to use your instrument, your music and make this world a better place.
