Rep. Don Sherwood (R-PA) had a five-year affair with a 29-year-old woman that ended in 2004 when she called 911 after Sherwood allegedly tried to strangle her. The woman has now sued Sherwood “for what she alleges were repeated beatings that seriously injured her physically and emotionally.”
Sherwood acknowledges he had an affair with the woman, but denies the allegations of abuse.
Now he is in danger of losing his seat, and has been “calling in chits” with “campaign officials and House colleagues.” He’s getting good results. The embattled congressman received about $90,000 from campaign committees and House members in the three-month period ending Oct. 1, according to his latest campaign finance report to the FEC.
– Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH): $2,000
– Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA): $5,000
– Conference Chairwoman Deborah Pryce (R-OH): $5,000
– House Energy and Commerce Chairman Joe Barton (R-TX): $5,000
– Infrastructure Chairman Don Young (R-AK): at least $1,000
– Government Reform Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA): at least $1,000
– Rep. Richard Burr (R-NC): $5,000
– Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK): $5,000
– Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX): $5,000
In all, over 40 House conservatives contributed $1,000 or more to Sherwood in just the current quarter. But he’s just getting started. Sherwood “is expected to raise up to $400,000 at a Thursday fundraiser hosted by President Bush in Sherwood’s district.”
They are all domestic violence enablers/supporters.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:22 pmjust another Republican dirtbag
October 17th, 2006 at 4:24 pmIs that special or not…..Now bull shit bush will be known as the fundraiser and leader of woman beaters, illicit affairs and pedaphiles…Corruption pay’s should be their moto…good job dumb ass…

October 17th, 2006 at 4:26 pmPerps, and perp enablers. Yes that is a good theme.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:26 pmbut….but….but….a Democrat would have beaten and strangled her worser!
October 17th, 2006 at 4:28 pmHaving an affair certainly shows he’s yet another hypocrite when it comes to “family values” (assuming he’s a married man).
However, let’s remember this is just her word against his (admittedly, not having read the linked articles) and we should be reticent to presume his guilt. Now, if there was an obvious cover-up of sexual advances towards a minor, I’ll be the first to point.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:29 pmi thought the actual term is “calling in chips”…
October 17th, 2006 at 4:31 pmwhat’s a “chit”?…
Sherwood’s gonna need every penny of that cash. Good defense attorneys don’t come cheap.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:31 pmThis law suit was settled out of court. This is old news.

A chit is a small document or note; a bill, or any small slip of paper with writing on it, or the outer fringes of a piece of paper
October 17th, 2006 at 4:34 pmIt boggles the mind, I mean Dem’s are not saints, but they never CLAIM to be. The GOP is what is in the dictionary under hypocrite. Do GOP voters have any scruples. Again, Clinton did not abuse Monica, that was consensual. Why couldn’t he get a pass from these filthy whoremongers, pedophiles and pervs. Give the 30% their Jim Jones Koolaid!!!
Texas Juice
October 17th, 2006 at 4:35 pmkaty, it’s chits. Here’s the definition from wikipedia:

Kinda like IOU’s.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:36 pm#8 – have you seen Sherwood’s commercial where he admits and asks forgiveness for his 5 year affair? Is that enough proof for you that he had an affair? And yes, it was an “affair” – he’s still married.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:36 pmdang, spudge beat me to it.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:37 pmI keep wondering what the relegious right or extreme fundamentalists christians think about all this junk that is coming out…The keep it in the closet or hide the dirty linen bunch must be going into over drive. This can’t look good even if all these bad guy’s throw them selves at the feet of the holier thn thou bunch and beg for forgiveness how much will they forgive….How stupid does it make them out to be.? Only the election will tell…..Blessings
October 17th, 2006 at 4:37 pmAnd why would the GOP funnel money to an abuser? For the same reason they made Foley run – they (GOP) are creeps.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:37 pmadd domestic abuse/torture to the list of pedophilia, predator enabling, tax evasion, illegal contracts, outright lies….and the list goes on daily. What’ll it be tomorrow?
October 17th, 2006 at 4:38 pmAnother Wife Beater for Jesus!
October 17th, 2006 at 4:39 pmSherwood: “give me money to pay off my girlfriend or I’ll start talking about your teenage boyfriends.”
And the money comes rolling in.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:39 pm.
These adulterers are a threat to heterosexual marriage! We need a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a monogamous relationship between a man and woman! Oh, and outlaw divorce too, because it threatens your marriage Mr. NASCAR dad and soccer mom! Oh, and down with the homosexuals too.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:41 pmIs Bush really going to show up for that? Geez, nothing like putting a great big spotlight on GOP “family values” hypocrisy.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:44 pmRep. Don Sherwood (R-PA) had a five-year affair with a 29-year-old woman that ended in 2004 – - What’s the math on this? Is she 29 now or she was in 2004? A five-year affair would make her pretty damn young when it began. Sherwood’s a real letch.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:46 pmHe can kiss his own ass goodbye. No one wants an adulterous woman beater in Congress.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:47 pmHey Don… Do you still beat your mistress?
October 17th, 2006 at 4:49 pm#16: I haven’t seen that commercial. My point was not that he’s not an adulterer, which obviously he is, but rather that he hasn’t been shown, nor is there much evidence, that he abused this woman. If he did, throw him to the lions. As I said, I haven’t read all the sources cited nor was I aware the suit was “settled out of court.” Just that the original post here shouldn’t trigger a finding of guilt as to the abuse allegations.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:51 pmYou want to know how he got all of those guys to ante up? I’ll tell you. The lines are all clearly drawn between everyone on that list and one Mr. Mark Foley. Old Doony boy has got some serious dirt on these guys. I can almost hear him shouting “At least I was with a goddamn woman! The rest of you sick bastards can kiss my ass! Eww, no wait stay away from my ass…Pay up, or mark my words this whole ugly mess will get a lot uglier.”
October 17th, 2006 at 4:56 pmHe can kiss his own ass goodbye. No one wants an adulterous woman beater in Congress.

I wouldn’t put that much faith on the conservative voter my friend.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:58 pmHe’s done. Sherwood has no chance in hell of retaining his seat.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:00 pmBut the affair started when Clinton was in office! He’s to blame, not this noble defender of family values!
October 17th, 2006 at 5:00 pmSomehow, they’ll all find a way to blame this on Clinton, just you watch…
I’m gonna ask my congressman, Tom Davis, why he’s supporting adulterers and abusers of women, and whether that’s the “family values” he’s been touting in his friggin’ repetitive campaign commercials that have been running for a couple of months around here. I bet I get a very interesting answer — utter silence…which is what we get from Rep. Davis for 22 out of every 24 months of his successive congressional terms…
October 17th, 2006 at 5:02 pmFamily values.
Family values.
Family values.
Family values.
Do as I say not as I do.

Comment by Sharon Cox — October 17, 2006 @ 4:37 pm
Well, considering that Christianity considers women to be possessions and semen recepticles, I’m gonna agree with you that they will blame this as a liberal stunt, and then back to beating and cheating on their own wives.
I don’t know how any woman with a hint of self-esteem could belong to such a misogynistic religious system. Shocking.

October 17th, 2006 at 5:08 pmShe must be a liberal operative! Aren’t you all curious why this story would come out in October? Nancy Pelosi must state under oath that she did not orchestrate this.
(I’m hoping that by stating all the religous right’s ridiculous objections before the trolls arrive will cause them to move along thinking their work is done here)
October 17th, 2006 at 5:09 pmGrand Ol’ Perp. That guy looks like a pig with glasses on.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:09 pmFamily Values. Monetary Values. Same thing.

October 17th, 2006 at 5:11 pmI can’t believe anyone would want to have sex with him. Yuck!
October 17th, 2006 at 5:14 pmHmmm….in July `06, Foley writes a check for $100,000 to the NRCC…that money gets parceled out to various congress people and committees. $90,000 gets funneled on over to the choker in the following couple of months….so in essence, one can say that Mark Foley is a leading contributor to the choker campaign….it sounds plausible….
October 17th, 2006 at 5:16 pmThere is over 600 senators and reps and that does not include their staffs.
We would need an army of investigators working full time.
We need congressional term limits !!!
October 17th, 2006 at 5:16 pmGOP likes creeps who abuse women > they do not care that Sherwood even strangled a young woman who he had an affair!
October 17th, 2006 at 5:17 pmShame on the disgusting putrid GOP membership in DC!
But, but wasn’t Clinton banging her?

I agree. I also think it is a very sad reflection on our capacity as a nation that we cannot vote out the corrupt and incompetent politicians on our own, but will actually need to instill a safeguard against our own ineptness… Very sad indeed.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:20 pmLet’s be honest, as long as these Republican hypocrites keep publicly hating gays and abortions, they can do anything else they please. That’s all their base, the religious fanatics, truly care about. All they want to do is rid the world of gays and abortions, and they’ll stop at nothing to accomplish those goals, even if it means keeping Bush and the rest of these nutjobs in office.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:30 pm#27 Art
Hey Don… Do you still beat your mistress?
I was just thinking that. The leading question for GOP politicians is no longer “When did you stop beating your wife?” but “When did you stop beating your mistress?”
October 17th, 2006 at 5:41 pmUnbelievable and all,……First I can’t imagine any woman being with this fool or most of the reich wing fat faced, no neck weirdo’s..From cheney, rove on and on they are dreadful to look at and worse to listen to…The thought of being in the same crowded room with any of this bunch make’s me want to puke……Here’s hoping all the bad guy’s are uncovered before election…Oop’s, let me rephrase, here’s hoping all their evil deed’s are brought out before the election…Blessings

October 17th, 2006 at 6:35 pmRepublicans will always vote for a Republican who beat, injured, and strangled his victim because:
1.) A Democrat would have done it worse
2.) He is a “family values” Republican so he must have been provoked.
3.) Republicans must blame all victims. No exceptions!!
October 17th, 2006 at 7:26 pmPond scum, one and all.

They all make me sick.
Forced sex trade and forced abortions in the Northern Marianas — brought to you by value-oriented, moral, christian Republicans.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:46 pmBush signs torture bill; Americans lose essential freedom. October 17, 2006
George W. Bush got what he wanted, ostensibly as a tool in his unfocused “war on terror”: By signing into law the Military Commissions Act of 2006, Bush has made it legal for the C.I.A. to continue operating torture facilities in undisclosed, foreign countries, and for the writ of habeas corpus to be suspended for individuals who are designated “enemy combatants” against the U.S. (Designated by whom? That question remains unanswered.) The law also “establishes military tribunals that would allow some use of evidence obtained by coercion [that is, torture], but would give defendants access to classified evidence being used to convict them.” (Reuters)
The provisions of Bush’s new torture law mean that Americans have lost the key, constitutional right on which Anglo-American criminal law (and criminal-law procedures in true democracies in general) is founded; that’s the basic right of an individual to know why he or she is being apprehended and detained. Now, technically, as in Stalin’s Soviet Union, Hitler’s Germany, Mao’s China or Pol Pot’s Cambodia, anyone labeled an “enemy combatant” – again, by whom; by Bush? – can be whisked away and never heard from again. That kind of authority, in the hands of corrupt or untruthful politicians, may or may not be an effective tool in some kind of “war on terror,” but it certainly can be a useful tool when it comes to silencing their opponents.
In an Orwellian pronouncement dutifully reported by Voice of America, the taxpayer-funded “news” service that acts as a mouthpiece for the administration, Bush said: “The United States does not torture….It is against our laws and it is against our values. By allowing the C.I.A. program to go forward, this bill is preserving a tool that has saved American lives.” Bush’s claim flies in the face of numerous reports of torture conducted by American officials at U.S. military prisons or secret locations overseas.
October 17th, 2006 at 8:40 pmDear Progs, WELCOME to the World of Family Values!!! I really must applaud all of you who have shifted your values away from “it’s none of our business” and “if it feels good, do it” wing of your movement. What is most gratifying for patient values-oriented conservatives is the acknowledgment that an affair between consenting adults is WRONG. When Dems and Fems threw Paula Jones and Dolly Browning under the bus, I knew feminism was just “vote-speak”. When Dems say they are the Party of the downtrodden and abused, we can now point to their continual lies, moral relativism and situational ethics.
I wonder what my feminist sisters said about other notorious affairs and sexual harassment by our former President?? Senator Swimmer? I got the impression it was OK with the majority of Dems if President Clinton harassed certain women because they consider certain women to be “trailer trash” – kind of like sensitive Wayne (post #53) and “Howling” Howard Dean who disparage NASCAR fans.
I think the Congressman is a PIG and a boor and I hope his wife takes him to the cleaners. Unlike Progs, I dislike pigs no matter what their Party. Many here think they can turn their pigs into silk purses…Ahhh, the transparently hypocritical Left…..
October 17th, 2006 at 8:52 pmMA … most “progressives” dont care about some affair… that is private business… they care about hypocrites that go on about family values like self-righteous wannabe saints and then turn around and “sin” against everything they have been preaching… i.e. Republicans should come down off their high horse and get real.
Beating women on the other hand is wrong and once again discredits the self-righteous make believe image the righties try to project of themselves.
If those on the right could stop faking all this BS maybe the left and right can get all these horrid problems we all know are here solved.

October 17th, 2006 at 10:24 pmI was at the only Carney-Sherwood debate at Bucknell University. If I closed my eyes I couldn’t tell if Rush, O’Liely, or Sean was debating Carney. I had to laugh when Carney brough up the fact the the Sherwood’s hometown, Nicholson, PA, is looking to Carney to get flood relief from June floods. Sherwood like in his ads brought up the fact that he was never charged with a crime, but people estimate he paid mistress between 2.5 and 5 million.
Currently, the Sherwood Camp is charging $350 a plate for his Bush fundraiser 10/19/06. This may be an all time low for a sitting president.

*******Dear Gerald – Congratulations for KNOWING that battery is wrong! I know this may come as a HUGE surprise to YOU, but I generally reserve my judgements of whether someone did or did NOT do anything criminal AFTER I’ve seen the evidence. People make false allegations every day of the week (remember Susan Smith?) so lets hear what evidence the little tart has against Sherwood the Pig. After he’s tried and convicted, let’s punish him with progressive Sensitivity Training Sessions in jail.
#65 – “I think Mighty is psychic.” Comment by ForTruth
*******Thanks for compliment!!! Being psychic is a whole lot better than being a schizoid-psycho – - you know the ones who can overlook an affair, or sexual harassment, or page diddling by someone they might vote for. On the other hand, conservatives generally kick those immoral pieces of trash to the curb. The difference between moraL relativists and “self-righteous” hypocrites? They BOTH hate getting caught – BUT the self-righteous hypocrite KNOWS he is morally wrong.
So perhaps I should summon a tad of compassion for the selective morally challenged progs here at TP – ReelScientist, Sharon Cox, buzzbomb, SpongeBob, For Truth-Sometimes, Zookeeper, Jay Randal, etc, etc,…..and the rest of the morally challenged hypocrites here….

October 17th, 2006 at 10:54 pmGosh Mighty, I feel special that I made your list under a specially made category for me “sometimes”, that sounds kind of relativist to me.

Isn’t it funny: the nearer we get to a “change of the guard,”
October 18th, 2006 at 12:16 amthe less MA spurts absolutist garbage? I remember a few years ago when MA’s knee-jerk genuflections to the Bush regime (and republicans in general) were so energetic they sounded like rifle shots.
JPark – OK, I’ll type s-l-o-w-e-r…. so you can catch up. In the progressive facade of wanting everyone, everywhere to think progressives are kind, understanding, etc., progs love to tout the gray areas of morality…or as they say in my business – mitigating circumstances. (An example of the moral cowardice of the Left, the shocking number of college seniors in this country making allowances for the “actions” of Adolph Hitler and Islamic terrorists based on their family circumstances and contemporaneous political situations.)
I had a conversation with an assistant DA in Van Nuys (Los Angeles County) about the rise in violent juvenile crime. She asked what I might attribute the increase to. Without pondering, I replied, “Illegitimacy”. She looked aghast and sputtered that “was VERY judgemental”. (Such a quick study!!) Relating the “judgemental” story to Mr. Aphrodite he was succinct, “I hope so…”
To re-cap – I’m proud of you Dems who now think adultery is a BAD thing. I am delighted you have not made excuses regarding the dysfunctional childhood of the “alleged mistress beater”. And when you get around to condemning grown men who abandon their late brother’s secretary in a car full of water, I’ll know you have made a FULL recovery from the diminished capacity of progressivism.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:22 amMA,

October 18th, 2006 at 12:25 amSometimes I imagine that an ape is put up to the keyboard to type at this site whenever I read MA’s inanity. My, what upstanding morals and self-righteous superiority my dear!!! Pound your hairy chest.

October 18th, 2006 at 12:32 amWell MA when you tell us that Laura Bush is bad for having run over her first boyfriend with her car killing him, then we will say that Teddy was a bad boy to have drowned that young woman in his car! And when you admit that Bush gave BJs to Jeff Gannon, then we can talk about Monica giving hummers to Bill Clinton > lol.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:33 amDear barfly – I wouldn’t be THAT sad to see the Dems take the House. The Repubs have spent $$$$$$ on so much pork that it’s impossible to tell where drunken Dems stop and drunken Repubs begin. I think they need the SHOCK and AWE of losing to get them back on the CONSERVATIVE path. Besides, Dems will be like pesky mosquitos if the Repubs keep the Senate. Let them throw every entitlement hammock in the budget – and watch what happens….Let them fast-track illegals….and watch what happens.
Interestingly enough, I have changed my mind about term-limits. I always thought that the ballot box was a perfect term-limit. (My squishy Dem friends loved to whine about the power and $$$ of the incumbants – when Dems were out of power.) But sadly, I think the culture of congressional power is so intoxicating, it can turn generally nice people into horrible caricatures of governance. Our Founding Fathers did not envision a Wachington job-fair – - they thought short term service was an obligation of the doctor, planter, merchant, farmer…and then GO HOME.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:36 amJay – I don’t recall Laura leaving the scene, calling her cousin and trying to cook up a story about who was driving, do you?? I believe both car crashes were accidents. THAT’S where the similarity ends and “Teddy’s” criminal behaviour begins If you think Senator Swimmer leaving Mary Jo Kopechne in a car with a limited air bubble is “bad”, then I owe you an apology – You are a much bigger piece of $h*t than I ever gave you credit for…..
October 18th, 2006 at 12:44 amLOL MA > what terribly vile language you spew on here > no real lawyer talks like that!
Laura has never fully explained that so-called accident > many believe she intentionally ran over her boyfriend after having a fight with him! As for Ted Kennedy he was drunk, and confused after swimming to shore, so it was too late to save Mary Jo! Laura may have committed a homocide, but Teddy failed to rescue Mary Jo!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:12 amTed’s handling of the situation was horrible and the parents of Mary Jo have a right to hate him too!
I think the Democrats should adopt a new moniker if they regain control of the Congress. The Deafocrats. How can the the Republicans actually believe that any charges of malfeasance or scandal against the Democrats will be listened to at all when the GOP will ignore any problem with it’s members just to hold on to power?

NOTE:
…misspelling of a word any 1st year wannabe law student- as most eye political futures- should know how to spell…
“incumbent”
Jay,
I don’t think MA is what he/she/it says “they” are…
October 18th, 2006 at 3:20 pmI don’t spread gossip – but Sherwood’s affair with Cynthia Orr and the police report (which was filed after the “alleged” choking incindent) are not gossip. All the apologies in the world do not excuse violence toward women. During a recent debate with his opponent, Chris Carney, Sherwood addressed the issue by saying he had apologized to his family and to the voters… well, what about an apology to all the vicitims of family violence… the very same people who look to the government for protection??!!! To have the President of the United States align himself with such a disgusting human-trash-pile as Congressman Sherwood illustrates just how low he will stoop in an effort to sustain his rubber-stamp congress.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:16 pmA local singer / songwriter named, Lorne Clarke, has summed up the whole tawdry mess with a very clever song called, “Donny’s House of Massage.” You can listen to it for free at this link:

Clinton and Monica was consensual, but he ruined that dress deliberately and that’s serious. The democratic disregard for textiles should be the story, not buggering young boys or choking and whuppin up on your mistress. After all, a whipped dog is a good dog. I would even go as far as to say Clinton somehow exercised mind control techniques he no doubt learned from some of his pinko commie buddies. By doing this, he has made all Republicans from Dukey to Foley become evil doers. Oh, and Hillary is a bitch.

October 18th, 2006 at 8:44 pmHey, I like the way this Sherwood handles himself. He really showed me something the way he keeps his ho in line. Sherwood, do you have any plans for 2008?

October 18th, 2006 at 8:48 pmMighty-
I want to take you for a nice romantic dinner and get to know you. Please don’t think of me as forward, but maybe to my place afterward. I feel I know you already; we seem to think as one, like soulmates. I have long searched for my intellectual equal. Reading your prose moistens my nether regions.
October 18th, 2006 at 9:08 pm[...] In the middle of “National Character Counts Week,” President Bush yesterday went to Pennsylvania to campaign for Rep. Don Sherwood (R-PA), who is being sued for repeatedly beating a woman with whom he had an affair. The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank notes that “Bush was careful to avoid the usual lines about family and conservative values.” [...]
October 20th, 2006 at 9:08 amThe fact that Bush even went shows his infinite stupidity. Sherwood is going to lose by a large margin; he would better serve his party by campaigning for someone who has a prayer. God bless President Decider; all the progressives thank you for helping us out. Did you see Mehlman on ‘Today’? What a Weasel Boy. Someone needs to ask him how he could have Sunday dinner with Abramoff on more than one occasion but deny knowing him.
October 20th, 2006 at 10:11 amThis is a letter from Michael Cutter, Former INS Special Agent, Registered Democrat
Notwithstanding the fact that I am a life-long Democrat, as were my parents, I was happy to travel to Indiana to appear at the rallies because although John Hostettler is a Republican; he is a true leader who possesses true Integrity. He refuses to accept PAC contributions and represents the people of his district and, indeed, the people of the United States.
In his capacity as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on immigration, Border Security and Claims, he has called upon me to testify at quite a few hearings concerning various immigration-related issues, most often where the focus was on the nexus between immigration law enforcement and national security and criminal justice. He did so, knowing full well that I would be highly critical of the administration and the President, where the issue of the security of our nation’s borders and the integrity of the immigration system were concerned.
It is time for all Americans to vote as “independents.†Neither political party represents the average guy anymore. The parties are all about power and getting more of it!
Republican Congressman John Hostettler has put his district first and stood up to his own Party as well as the lobbyist money changers in Washington. Congressman Hostettler did not crumple to pressure from Lobbyist and Washington to sell out the middle class with trade deals like CAFTA. He once again sent a letter to the President demanding we enforce our current immigration laws.
We need more men and women like Michael Cutter who will speak up for Congressman like John Hostettler who have not sold out to lobbyist. We need to think like Americans not Democrats or Republicans. It’s time we demand that Congress act in ways that benefit our Country.
November 5th, 2006 at 4:29 pmTo the ignorant asshole who claims “christianity claims women as property” and other supreme idiocy:
WOMEN WERE PROPERTY BEFORE CHRIST. CHRIST AND HIS FOLLOWERS WERE THE FIRST TO CONSIDER THEM EQUALS.
Are you jackasses that stupid about everything you “know”???
God help us. You morons sure as hell can’t.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:29 amCongressman Sherwood, or “Woody” as I like to call him showed great judgement in strangling his girlfriend. A man of lesser charactor would probably have strangled his wife, but Woody is a family man and didn’t want to leave his children without a mother. Instead, he was willing to sacrifice his own needs to preserve his family. A true hero. Let’s send him off to Iraq and see who he can strangle there.
