For the last few months, top Bush administration officials have refused to admit that Iraq is currently in a civil war — disagreeing with many of Iraq’s leaders, U.S. troops in Iraq, and seven in ten Americans.
Recent estimates of Iraqis killed over the last three and a half years have ranged from 40,000 to more than half a million.
The simple fact of the matter is the situation in Iraq is worse than civil war — the world is witnessing at least four major internal conflicts in Iraq:
1) A Shiite-Sunni civil war in Baghdad and the central part of Iraq. For much of the last year, a vicious campaign of sectarian cleansing has been taking place in the neighborhoods of Baghdad and the surrounding central regions, with Shiite militias targeting Sunni Iraqis and Sunni insurgent groups bombing Shiite sites.
The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the latest killings this week in the central part of the country may be directly related to the lack of progress on the national reconciliation front. U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq have argued that the political solution, and not more boots on the ground, is the key to stopping the conflict: “you fix the government, you fix the problem.”
2) Intra-Shiite conflict in the south. Less noticed in the American media have been some battles between Iraqi Shiites in the streets of southern cities such as Diwaniya and Basra. In these clashes, intra-Shiite political disputes have being played out in violence in the streets — and in some cases U.S. forces have supported one faction versus another.
3) Sunni Arab insurgency in the West. The Sunni Arab insurgency continues to undermine security in the Western part of Iraq. The chief of intelligence for the Marine Corps in Iraq filed a report last month saying that the Al Qaeda in Iraq insurgent group has filled a political vacuum there.
4) Arab-Kurdish violence in the North. Violence and tensions have increased in northern Iraq between Arabs and Kurds, particularly in the disputed city of Kirkuk.
The Bush administration still does not have the right diplomatic, political or military strategy to deal with each of these multiple conflicts — all of which add up to a situation that is worse than civil war.
The United States needs to call for an immediate internal peace conference to put a stop to Iraq’s civil war, as the Center for American Progress proposes in its Strategic Redeployment plan.
The problem is Bush. He is a brick wall standing in the way of finding the least harmful solution to the Iraq disaster.

October 18th, 2006 at 2:59 pmWell, if Baghdad is just like Manhattan, as the GOP seems to think, then that picture of Manhattan with all the people dying from bombs in the road should be a fine substitute for a picture of Baghdad. What’s the problem?

October 18th, 2006 at 3:02 pmAnyone who thinks Iraq is not in a state of civil war has their head up their a**. Which is a perfect description of (not my) President Bush.
October 18th, 2006 at 3:03 pmThe violence that is occurring in Iraq is a direct result of the U.S. presence in Iraq. But Think Progress’s advocacy of the Strategic Redeployment plan is not the answer. This plan calls for a “smaller, nimble force… to train Iraqi security forces” ignoring the fact that there are already 300,000 trained Iraqis in the Iraqi militia who still cannot fight on their own without help from the American military. Iraqiization, like Vietenamization, is a policy that seems doomed to fail. The Strategic Redeployment plan is against the idea of an immediate withdrawal, claiming that it will “permanently destabilize Iraq”, ignoring the words on this post by Think Progress, which explains in vivid detail the chaos that is already happening in Iraq. There is already anarchy happening in that country. It is certainly not going to become ameliorated by having the United States military, which is already responsible for so much bloodshed, remain in Iraq. Lastly, there were ten U.S. soldiers killed yesterday in Iraq. How many more soldiers have to die [perhaps 57,000, the same number who died in Vietnam?] in Iraq before Think Progress allows that immediate withdrawal is the best way to ensure that no more Americans die for a less than noble cause?

You don’t even know what I’m saying to you, do you Mr. President?
“we must fight the terrorists there!”
October 18th, 2006 at 3:08 pmHell, Representative Terry Everett, a seven-term Alabama Republican who is vice chairman of the House intelligence subcommittee on technical and tactical intelligence doesn’t know the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite. When asked, Mr. Everett responded with a low chuckle. He thought for a moment: “One’s in one location, another’s in another location. No, to be honest with you, I don’t know. I thought it was differences in their religion, different families or something.â€

Courtesy of Slate, we get this:
The [Wall Street] Journal fronts a good investigation into the shoddy, pointless training of the U.S. troops who advise the nascent Iraqi forces—ostensibly the linchpin of U.S. strategy there. “In my 28 years of military service I have never seen such an appalling approach to training,” said one of the officers who went through the training. The story includes links to two after-action reviews from officers who went through the training; they’re pretty entertaining reading. “It’s a good thing that the newspapers did not get a hold of this fiasco,” reads one. Strategic Vision For The War On Terror (with caveats)
Our Strategy Recognizes That The War On Terror Is A Different Kind Of War, Involving Both A Battle Of Arms And A Battle Of Ideas. Not only are we fighting our terrorist enemies (the people of Iraq) on the battlefield, we are promoting freedom and human dignity (by revoking Habeus Corpus and allowing whatever I say isn’t torture) as alternatives to the terrorists’ perverse vision of oppression (occupation) and totalitarian rule. To win the War on Terror, the United States will continue to lead an expansive international effort to:
Defeat violent extremism (especially in the evangelicals) as a threat to our way of life as a free and open society. .. blah blah blah…More vague bs here____________________

“Sounds like we need to send more troops into Iraq.” Where exactly do you propose that these troops come from, the graves of Alexander the Great’s soldiers? You also believe that is important to win the war on terror. Apparently you have not been paying attention to what Congressman Murtha has been saying, which is that the terrorists or outside forces that are engaged in fighting the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq number 7 per cent. Again, that number is 7 NOT seventy per cent.
The overwhelming majority of those who are fighting the U.S. forces are the resistance fighters, who will fight until their last dying breath until the U.S. is finally driven from their soil. To attempt a simple analogy, if another country invaded the United States, there would be pockets of resistance forming to expel the invader from the United States. That is what is going on in Iraq. Again, this concept should not be that difficult to grasp. The United States is illegally occupying another country and the citizens of Iraq are doing everything they can to make sure that they leave their country.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:00 pmWell, I’m disappointed that people would propagandize to that effect because the stakes are too high for that kind of illogical behavior. We have got a plan — first of all a stated goal. Armageddon!

Thank you.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:09 pmExit Strategy for Iraq
Given that we did NOT go to war in Iraq for the purpose of securing its vast proven oil reserves for American and British energy conglomerates; and
Given that we certainly did NOT go to war to establish a permanent military presence in Iraq; and
Given that we DID go to war solely for the purpose of eliminating a possible WMD threat and to bring freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people; and
Given that all sixteen U.S. intelligence agencies agree that our continued presence in Iraq is unfortunately creating more terrorists than are being eliminated; and
Given that captured al Qaeda communications show that the terrorists actually WANT coalition forces to remain in Iraq in order to bolster al Qaeda’s standing with the insurgency; then
Determining a timetable for our departure from Iraq is elegantly simple:
Let the Iraqi people decide. Let them vote.
The Iraqis freely and fairly elected a democratic government. (Remember all those purple fingers?) Well, by golly, let them again exercise their hard won suffrage.
Put the question to the Iraqis: “Having overthrown your brutal dictator and having assisted you in establishing your democracy, what would you have us do now? Stick around indefinitely, or withdraw our forces soon, by a date certain? As altruistic liberators we will respect and honor your decision.â€
Surely the Iraqis are in the best position to judge whether our continued presence is helping or hindering the hard work that lies ahead for them.
Let the Iraqi people decide. Let them vote.
With 140,000 troops on the ground we can reasonably ensure the integrity and security of the polling places for one day. (We proved that during their election.) And, just a hunch here, if the Shiites and Sunnis and Kurds actually trust that we’ll honor the result of the vote, I suspect that securing the polls won’t be all that difficult.
Let the Iraqi people decide. Let them vote.
What do you say, George? Do we practice what we preach?

The Buddha replied: “Greater than the massacring of bullocks is the sacrifice of self. He who offers up his evil desires will see the uselessness of slaughtering animals at the altar. Blood has no power to cleanse, but the giving up of harmful actions will make the heart whole. Better than worshiping gods is following the ways of goodness.”

October 18th, 2006 at 4:28 pmThe point that everyone seems to be missing is that Civil war is exactly what the PNAC wants in Iraq – by fomenting civil war in several countries and open war in still others the instability in the middle east continues to rise. The plan seems obvious to me… cause war, mayhem and destruction until multiple regimes you dont like fall apart under the weight of their own war machine or until the populktation has been killed off. Its a form of third party genocide, we can claim that we didnt commit genocide because it was civil war that did it when in reality we are probably providing arms to the insurgents and the various groups in the hope they will all kill each other.

October 18th, 2006 at 4:38 pmSo he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: and upon her forehead was a name written,
MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.
-From the Book of Revelation

October 18th, 2006 at 4:43 pm> Babylon has fallen. Repent!
Babylon has fallen in 330 B.C. when Alexander the Great paid a visit. He took on the freakish project of making it capital of the World. Unfortunately, this plan was rudely interrupted by an end-of-life event. (Christianity having not yet been invented, he went straight to hell.) The Parthians then checked in in 144 B.C. (at that time the town had seriously gone down the ‘must visit’ scale). They elected to build a new capital at Ctesiphon instead of staying. Why is Babylon still being mentioned 2149 years later? Shouldn’t people in the meantime know that it has fallen?

October 18th, 2006 at 4:55 pmAnd I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
that ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

October 18th, 2006 at 5:12 pmApocalypse Now
All you quote is Revelations – reports of visions that many Christians, myself included, believe were written as code to describe how Rome (Babylon) would soon self-destruct and the oppressed Christians there should persevere. What about the rest of the Bible, particularly Jesus’ words which would be very condemning to much of what this country is doing in the guise of “God’s Work”.
You are one-trick pony trying to run with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Go back to your stall.

You have an interesting interpretation of Revelation. I have read a little about your interpretation. Your interpretation is not embraced by mainstream Christians. You sound like one of those “progressive” Christians, who are willing to subvert the teachings of Christ in the name of “progress”. You are worse than the non-believers, and the worshippers of the beast, for you seek to destroy from within. You are a parasite, and you the rest of the “Christians” that you claim to represent will all be condemned to eternal damnation.

Revelations is NOT Jesus’ teachings, the Bible is not to be taken literally, and you are the arbitrator of my or anyone else’s soul. You are a false prophet that Christ warned about as you spread your divisiveness and hate, placing yourself before God as a judge of men’s hearts. You are a Christian Pharisee placing your demands on your fellow man, rather than bringing the love of God to others. You say “repent” and call me a “parasite”, forgetting that Christ stated that those who call others “fool” have committed murder. The Bible is not a blunt object to hit others over the head with as you have been doing.
