Last night on MSNBC, Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank told Keith Olbermann that “there are rumors now about a third [page scandal], this one involving a 16-year-old girl.”
Milbank later noted that “political news is starting to sound more and more like you’re reading the police blotter, with Ney last week, the eighth guilty plea or conviction in the Abramoff case, piled on top of Scooter Libby and Tom DeLay and Curt Weldon. It goes on and on. And, of course, the punchline is that President Bush has declared this to be National Character Counts Week.” Watch it:
Full transcript:
OLBERMANN: We know very little about these allegations, at least from Congressman Kildee’s remarks, and if it is Congressman Kolbe of Arizona, it’s important to stress we know nothing about the actual allegation yet, nor the investigation. But did the scandal, by dint of this one mention from Mr. Kildee, just get another set of legs?
MILBANK: Legs would be the least offensive body part. But, yes, we–Jim Kolbe is retiring, so it’s not necessarily a big deal about him. Already, there are rumors now about a third, this one involving a 16-year-old girl. That’s been swirling around Washington today.
The real effect here is not necessarily with Kolbe, but that it just compounds that we have another one. And political news is starting to sound more and more like you’re reading the police blotter, with Ney last week, the eighth guilty plea or conviction in the Abramoff case, piled on top of Scooter Libby and Tom DeLay and Curt Weldon. It goes on and on.
And, of course, the punchline is that President Bush has declared this to be National Character Counts Week.
OLBERMANN: Well, we’re going to count the number of people who have character.
Congressman Kildee had complained that he had been shut out by the Republican chairman of the page board when he had learned about Mark Foley’s conduct in the fall of 2005. Presumably, he testified to that before the House Ethics Committee. We–do we know more than the presumption? And do we know if they’re taking it as evidence of a coverup, or how they’re treating that testimony?
MILBANK: Well, it’s hard to know exactly what the Ethics Committee is doing. But clearly, the public has made its decision. There’s a poll out today saying 57 percent of the people believe that there was, in fact, a coverup, 77 percent saying it was handled badly.
Now, clearly, there was a coverup at some level, by definition, because it–people knew about this, certainly Shimkus and the page board knew about it, and it didn’t get out. The question really is, how far up it goes, and does it–how far into Denny Hastert’s office?
Well, just as long as they stay off the topic of me and Jeff, it’s OK.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:09 pmGo away, I’m busy counting characters…
October 18th, 2006 at 1:09 pmI guess the Harry Reid scandals were drawing too much attention, so Dems are trying to rehash Foley, which again, only hurts gays ….
Carl Cameron just showed an analysis that proves polls are skews a few points towards Dems, so once again, you will all be disappointed on the morning of Nov. 8, when you’ve lost again.
Anyone heard the latest on bird flu?
October 18th, 2006 at 1:12 pmA week ago Sunday, Tucker Carlson was on Tweety’s show & said that there was a hetrosexual page scandal coming but didn’t mention the party affiliation. Must be the same thing Millbank is alluding to.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:19 pmFar worse news than that: Sen Larry Craig of Idaho was OUTED yesterday as bisexual/gay > he has been soliciting sex from males in public restrooms, in particular at Union Station in DC. More information is forthcoming on this new sex sleaze scandal!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:24 pmWow, Hendler, that Reid scandal sure is a big one. It easily eclipses the Dukester, Bob Ney, Weldon, all the White House officials and appointees already indicted, the Abramoff octopus, and the widespread coverup of Foley’s predatory stalking of teenage boys (and many, many more). Why don’t you just throw Monica-gate in there while you are at it.
What a pathetic joke.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:24 pmSpin, Jason, spin!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:26 pm3. Carl Cameron, eh? I guess if such an unbiased reporter working for such an unbiased network says it’s so, it MUST be true.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:27 pmMr. Hendler, you seem like an upstanding citizen, would you like to apply for a White House Page position? We have several, uh, positions open!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:28 pmJason, how did Dennis Hastert take his net worth from about $300,000 to $6 million? Hint, it involves a land deal and earmarks.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:28 pmDJShay, don’t dispute those “facts.” If the right believes them, they may let up a bit on their Get Out the Vote.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:29 pmAnyone heard the latest on bird flu?
Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler
Yes, I heard it makes people make stupid comments on the internets tubes. Hope they find a cure for ya soon….good luck with that.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:31 pmBTW, what about the reconstruction effort ??? Not even that is going well ?? What has been done in Iraq all these past years with thoes billions of money ?? Democrats should attack repukes on this subject too, attack them on the money issue, after all, it’s taxpayers (voters) money.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:33 pmStick with the facts. That the GOP is 99% corrupt and 100% rotten.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:33 pmShouldn’t it have been National Unethical Character Week? Republican politicians don’t care about anything but brokering legislation that benefits the corporate entity and stuffing their pockets with kickbacks. They don’t care about you or your family one iota. Jason M. Hendler above stated “you will all be disappointed on the morning of Nov. 8 when you’ve lost again.” This mentality reflects Jason’s attitude toward governance in this country. To Jason, it’s ok to excuse bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior (his referance to Harry Reid’s land deal is a very poor example, btw). It doesn’t matter to people like him that the constitution is being trashed. It doesn’t matter that the bill of rights has been all but nullified. The unbridled corruption surrounding and permeating this administration doesn’t strike a chord with people like Jason M. Hendler. They will continue to blindly follow the champion of Duh-isms, George Bush, all the way into the abyss. Politics is nothing but entertainment to them. They just like to be associated with the ‘winning team’ like a sporting event. They are just like Bush, nothing but cheerleaders.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:46 pmI guess the Harry Reid scandals were drawing too much attention …..
Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler
Naw, not that at all, Jason. I think people realize that the Harry Reid NON-scandals were just one of Rove’s old wornout “bait and switch” tactics in trying to drag a democrat into the Republican cesspool.
I mean, its kind like what President Bush said back in May of 2005: “See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”
Guess the propaganda just ain’t working any more, you know?
And speaking about bird flu: don’t it just make you sick to see all that mud thrown at the democrats and none of it sticking?
October 18th, 2006 at 1:49 pmWhy did they even bring up Rep. Kolbe? He’s gay and it would be very unlikely for him to be hitting on 16 year old girls! (Unless he’s changing his orientation.)
Mr. Hendler, I suggest you save your sick leave so you can recuperate when the Republicans lose the majority in the House. Of course, what the polls say now (or at any time) doesn’t matter in three weeks. I’m a fan of checking many sources (not just Fox) and there’s a conservative (old-school I assume) that is predicting that Republicans will lose 19 seats and Democrats puck up 20 for a Democratic majority of 222 to the Republican 219. It’s “electionprojection” (com).
If the Republicans retain majority, I’ll say “I was wrong”. If the Republicans lose majority, how about we hear you state for the record “I was wrong”, is that a deal? I’ll mark November 8th on my calendar just for you!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:50 pm#16 – “don’t it just make you sick to see all that mud thrown at the democrats and none of it sticking?”
So far, it makes me feel pretty good! ;-)
The only problem I see is that the Republicans have raised the art of throwing mud to such a fine degree that I’m a bit apprehensive they’ve yet to throw their stockpile before November 7th rolls around. Everyone knows that Republicans are the masters of throwing mud and the top-of-the-class in negative ads, so there’s still a chance they can retain majority by the skin of their teeth.
The Democrats are not pure as the driven snow, it’s just that the Republicans have kept the spotlight off their miss-deeds for so long it’s their time to be under the microscope now. When it’s a one-party rule, you’ve only got yourself to blame when your failures come home to roost!
October 18th, 2006 at 1:54 pmThis guy is still on the air? I thought they killed that show long ago since no one watches it. Hrmm….
October 18th, 2006 at 1:59 pmShort version: I friend of mine with the same name as hi-ranking adminstration chief-of-staff got a call from a former GOP representative last night (really!). Once this error in name vs. person was cleared up, they continued to talk. And the former rep said the additional information not yet out on the Foley scandal is “atomic.”
Makes you wonder…
October 18th, 2006 at 2:00 pmWhen it’s a one-party rule, you’ve only got yourself to blame when your failures come home to roost!
Comment by Democrat Soldier
Good point, Soldier. But as for mud slinging, the Republicans have already started in Tennessee with ads targeting Ford. And you haven’t seen nothing yet. They have $$$$$$$ to spend on negative ads and word is they are waiting until about 10 days before the election to cut loose an all out barrage of scum and slime.
The whole Republican Party is like a huge, backed up toilet. And you can bet Karl Rove is going to show up with a plunger.
October 18th, 2006 at 2:21 pmHmmmm… someone chasing an underage girl… if OTOH they were chasing a boy, then we’d know immediately that the Congresscritter in question was a Republican.
October 18th, 2006 at 2:23 pmGod these Republican Perverts make me sick to my stomach.
October 18th, 2006 at 2:25 pmCan’t they even try to have normal lives and / or can’t they find some way to keep themselves away from our children?
Republicans are disgusting.
Oh h**l!
I admit it. It’s much more fun talking about sex scandals than it is discussing our loose of liberties and the end of Habaes Corpus.

October 18th, 2006 at 2:37 pmYeah, I was hoping the bied flu thingy would scare up enough coverage to keep the Republican scandals off of the front page. By the way, I’m not wearing any underwear.
October 18th, 2006 at 2:37 pmCarl Cameron, the “reporter” who fawned over Bush and told Bush how Cameron’s own wife was “working hard to get Bush elected”.
Now the reports about how biased polls are against Republicans. The Victim Party strikes again.
Let’s not forget Republican criminals David Safavian, Whitehouse procurement director who was found guilty in the Abramoff scandals.
Republican Scooter Libby who has been charged with perjury.
Republican hack Claude Allen who was Bush’s close policy adviser who went on a shoplifting spree and blamed Hurricane Katrina–even though he was making 160,00K a year on the public dole.
(R) Bob Ney, the “Mayor of DC” who just pleaded to corruption charges.
(R) Duke Cunningham who earned the title of the “most corrupt congressman ever” for his pathetic crimes and graft.
(R) Curt Weldon under investigation.
(R) Bill Jankalow who killed a man with his car.
(R) Governor Ryan of Illinois convicted/sentenced this year for graft.
(R) Don “The Choker” Sherwood who is running campaign ads claiming he had an affair but he didn’t throttle his mistresses neck.
(R) Arnold Schwarzenegger who can be seen on video smoking marijuana, molesting Brazilian can-can girls, talking about ejacualtion and is also spotted digitally penetrating a female in a new picture on the web.

What exactly is the news about Reid? He forgot to fill out a form? Puhleeze. Not like he manipulated an Earmark for the county where he just happened to own some farmland that would be worth a ton of cash if he got the Earmark. I’d think you’d be more upset about Hastert’s abuse of taxpayer funds for his own enrichment than about a clerical error on Reid’s part. Reid didn’t manipulate any taxpayer money to make a profit on his land deal, btw.

Three page scandals covered up by the Repervs. And Fat Bastert’s Page Hotline is more like a Hot Page Line. There is no oversight of the hotline so it is probably part of the coverup.
Harry Reid is a non-story. The Repukes are yelling about it because they’re getting clobbered with Pagegate and Abescam and they got nothin’.

Carl Cameron just showed an analysis that proves polls are skews a few points towards Dems
Here’s how it works, Jason. If likely voters in this country, just for example, were 38% Democrat, 34% Republican, and 28% independent, then a good representative sampling of the country would have the same ratio. If you were to poll Democrats and Republicans in equal measure, you’d get an inaccurate picture of people’s views. And, by the way, that should help explain why Rasmussen Reports’ polls always give Bush higher approval ratings than most of the others.

October 18th, 2006 at 5:55 pmThis is my first time at this site. I must say, I though /. was filled with some hateful people. You guys take the cake.
It seems to me everyone here expects the Republicans to “be better” then the dems. Very few on the right are going to give into the left when the left so overlooks everything their party does but expects the right to be perfect. I know, I have read that the Republicans go around caiming to be the party of family values and the dems don’t so the Republicans must be perfect while the dems don’t have too. I am not buying it. For EVERY screw up the Republicans have I can show you one that is equal or worse that was done by the dems. This goes all the way back to Kennedy in effect killing Mary Jo at chappaquiddick. She was alive for hours but of course he was drunk and ran off to protect himself at her expense. You even have a more recent incident with Gerry Studds actually caught having sex with a 17 year old. It amazes me that his page is an adult at 17 while Foley’s page was a mere child. The left is so hypocritical. I have been around a long time and the left has always been the major mud slingers.
Bush lied! Umm, does anyone remember “I did not have sexual relations with that woman!” Ok, now I have to hear the lies were about different things, one sex which hurt nobody (which I could argue with) and the other led to war which has killed thousands. I know Clinton lied, I don;t know that Bush did and neither do you. Clinton, your liar, defended Bush’s belief that there were WMD in Iraq.
You can talk all you want but I have heard the same lies about the Republicans for over 40 years with just different tagets. Everything the left predicted would happen never has. In the 70’s it was oil, we are going to be out of oil by 1990 at our present rate of use. I heard in the 80’s how our economy was going to tank (like under Carter?) because Reagan’s policies couldn’t work. I hear how terrible our economy is now under Bush yet the facts are we have the best economy in the world. We aren’t safer now than when Bush took office from Clinton AND we have thousands more terroists because of his actions. I don;t see how you can support BOT of those opinions since we were assured we would be attacked again and soon. Six years later, with lots more terrorists, we haven’t been attacked once. When you kids grow up let me know.

From Evansville Courier & Press
What [Republicans] will not mention is the “other” censure that occurred the same day [Gerry Studds was censured by the House]. Republican Rep. Dan Crane, who represented a district in Southern Illinois, was also censured for an illicit relationship with a 17- year-old female page. Crane had gone so far as to move the high school junior into an apartment in Georgetown. After eight months, she ended the relationship and told her parents.
At the censure hearing, Crane was defended by fellow Illinois Republican Henry Hyde, who would, 15 years later, chair the impeachment hearings against President Bill Clinton.
According to transcripts, Hyde implored his fellow representatives that Crane had suffered the loss of his reputation and probably his marriage, and that as good Christians, we are all taught to “hate the sin but love the sinner.”
“My friends,” he said, “it’s time we showed Dan Crane some love and allow him to keep his seat in this body.” Instead of kicking Crane out, the House voted censure.
…
I’m SHOCKED you missed this. Just a mistake?

H/T Think Progress, where there’s a video and transcript posted. They briefly discuss the accusations made about Congressman Kolbe. (Disclaimer – I haven’t followed the story about Kolbe and will not discuss it save to say that if he preyed……
October 18th, 2006 at 7:21 pmThe Republicans organized the Evangelicals to carry out the largest organized televised hate rally this past Sunday (10/14/2006). The goal of the Republican Party was to have the Evangelical ministers get their congregations worked up into a joyously hateful fevered pitch of their upcoming opportunity to go out Gay Bashing on November 7th. The Republican controlled Evangelical church has once again convinced all of the people with absolutely no empathy toward other human beings, and little black hearts just swelling up with HATRED towards their fellow man, that the Democrats are trying to destroy the sanctity of marriage by NOT clubbing gay people to death in the street. They Evangelicals get excited about this for 2 reasons. 1. Many of them are severely repressed homosexuals who are fighting the urge to have anonymous sex with people of the same gender in the Church bathroom. 2. Many of them have a ton of repressed anger and the closest they will ever get to acting out their true desire of clubbing other humans to death is to commit social violence by voting what they believe to be Anti-Gay.
These people are seriously FU@!ED UP.
The Republican wielding the Evangelicals as a weapon against other people, and using them to retain power, will go down in history right along side the Nazi movement.
Sounds dramatic, but do your homework and you will find the parallels.
October 18th, 2006 at 7:30 pmGot to love MSM Reid coverage. Here in the heart of Morman Zion, land deals are done this way every day. Geez, the folks here don’t think there is a problem. The question was asked did he give the church their 10%. In full defense of Mr. Reid, our state laws are really vague as to setting up partnerships and trusts. Just set one up for my family last month and found a ton of legal grey areas. Lawyer said not to worry,we do this every day. Bottum line-nobody looks as long as you pay their state and county fees at filing. Trust me,some accountants and advisors are just plain stupid .
October 18th, 2006 at 7:55 pmIt’s hot and heavy at DailyKos that the culprit is a Congressman from Illinois (not Hastert).
October 18th, 2006 at 8:12 pmSo “Shocked”. . . you failed to mention that “9/11″ took literally years of planning. How could that little tidbit have eluded you so if you really wanted to be taken seriously within your FAUX NEWS parroting-points? Also, it’s been 5 years not 6 since “9/11″. As well, please learn the usage differences between “then” and “than”. You wouldn’t want us to think you are less educated “than” we are.
October 18th, 2006 at 8:45 pmI guess you chose to blow off not only “remedial grammar” but decided to attend that frat kegger instead of studying for your “Critical Thinking 101″ and “Ethics” finals. Man, Bush is truly representative of his constituency.
Busheep . . . sad little mindless critters.

October 18th, 2006 at 9:55 pmWhen FDR asked how big a plane was required to carry an atomic weapon in 1941, he was told that the weapon would weigh between 4 and 11 tons. He called up design teams from the various manufacturers and asked what was the largest bomber each could come up with. Boeing and Convair came up with the same answer – 5 tons deliverable. He gave both manufacturers the go ahead and went back to the bomb team and said that the weapon should weigh no more than 4 tons. The final weight of both delivered weapons was about 5 tons. Either of the planes (The B29 or the B36, Convair missed the due date.) was capable of carrying a bit more, but that was his secret. From concept to delivery, the entire project took four years, four months and four days. HST made the final decision.
There is no “Harry Reid” scandal. It’s like the “Whitewater scandal.” Remember that one? Yes? Remember the findings? Probably not. Spurred on by the Right Wing propaganda machine, tens of millions of our tax dollars were spent only to find out it was all a sham. This is the same thing. It’s an attempt to throw enough dirt in the air that voters conclude that “they are all crooked” (and some Ds, like Jefferson deserve it) so that the Delays, Abramoffs, Cunninghams, Foleys, et al are not THE issue.
It won’t work and neither will scare tactics again. Am I the only one who recalls that we had Orange alert after Orange alert during the election (including one for NYC after John Kerry’s speech at the Dem convention) but have only had ONE since, when the Brits discovered the plot that the Bushies took credit for foiling. Now, three weeks before the election,we have a plot to blow up football stadiums during an NFL game based on a friggin’ web site. Give me a break.
October 18th, 2006 at 10:39 pmSo Hendler, how long have you hated America?
After all you’re a conservative – proving that you hate America.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:03 pmHarry Reid scandal. Somehow to conservatives it’s a scandal if their opposition reaps an advantage from the rising price of Las Vegas land.
Las Vegas land increased in value. Who knew that would happen?
October 18th, 2006 at 11:04 pmThere seems to be a common theme with these trolls who are suddenly ’stumbling’ into ThinkProgress.
1. They’re “shocked” by our “anger” and “hatred” (I’m shocked by their unwavering admiration for a dimwitted president who can’t utter two words without one of them being a lie and the other being horribly mispronounced.)
2. They use the “Dems do it, too” argument and then have to go back three or four decades to find one example of the kind of behavior from a Dem that we’re seeing now from a different Republican every single day. Seriously, trolls, just go off somewhere and count the resignations, indictments and convictions from your party in the past two years alone. I’ll start you off: Libby, Cunningham, Ney, Safavian, Allen, DeLay, Abramoff, Rudy, Scanlon, Buckham, Taft, Noe, Foley, Tobin — you can pick it up from there.
3. They make up names for themselves that make reference to a sex act or genitals.
4. They head for the hills before they can get drawn into an actual discussion of something that would require them to think for themselves, rather than just repeat the dumb crap they heard Limbaugh and Hannity say.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:05 pmI guess “Shocked” doesn’t want to discuss his “points” with me.
Just *another* Cut-and-Run Republican, I guess.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:28 pmNice job trying to list all of our republicam scandals, now here’s my own short list of democratic scandals that everybody cares about today:
1. Ted Kennedy & Chappaquiddick
2. Bill Clinton & Monica Lewinsky
3. Jimmy Carter & the failed hostage recovery
4. Woodrow Wilson & the League of Nations
You guys are toast. We’ve got you right where we want you. HA!
October 18th, 2006 at 11:36 pmRumor from district 22 in Texas (Tom DeLays old district) is that it is Republican from Illinois, jerry Weller.
No backup info. Heard it in a bar.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:58 pmStealthBadger, you need to take a remedial Sex Ed course.
Pedophiles are not gay. Pedophiles are not straight.
Pedophiles are pedophiles. They are neither gay nor straight.
Pedophiles also are proof that sex drive is innate. You don’t choose it, it chooses you.
Tom3, exactly what part of “we need to be looking at the straights too” is in conflict with that??

October 19th, 2006 at 12:01 am[...] TPM Reader DK already ran with the Imelda Marcos metaphor, so I’m not quite sure how to describe tonight’s murmurs that tomorrow may bring an answer to the question Dana Milbank has us all asking. [...]

October 19th, 2006 at 12:28 am# 88 “Walt the Man”
And your point is?
Are you suggesting that Osama’s resources are even in the same “cave” as ours or are you corroborating the point that years of planning are required to perpetrate such a crime on American soil? All intelligence reports have suggested that the U.S.S. Cole attack took over 2 years of harbor surveillance before that inflatable sauntered up. World Trade Center attack #1 . . . 3 years. Creating an internal network, establishing residences, training on multi-engine jets and then coordinating the actual event is said to have taken nearly 5 years for the WTC/9/11 event. Logic and common sense suggests that planning for a subsequent terrorist event, on American soil, especially in the face of substantially greater pressure on the known perpetrators (by the global anti-terrorist community established in concentration post 9/11) would likely take even longer than 5 years.
To use the tired rationale of ” Well, we haven’t been attacked since” is not only ridiculous it suggests that the United States is their only target . . . and of course we know that’s ridiculous too. Terrorism is a methodology not an ideology, as is the psychology of allowing the less than brave Busheep to stew in their own “fear-based” intellectual sewage, wondering when to crap their pants next.

October 19th, 2006 at 12:34 amSorry to hear that neither your parents or Bush’s had one of those “My Child is an Honor Student” bumper stickers on their car.
We’re dealing with the massive GOP corruption going on as we speak.
We already know about stuff that happened last century and none of it is relevant or prosecutable. The current rogues gallery? Well, granted we don’t yet have all of you, but aren’t you just gonna shit when we get subpoena power. HA! frickin HA! Wait, I hear your mother calling you.
Nighty-night!

October 19th, 2006 at 12:48 amMy point is that it took a about four years to assemble the pieces of an elaborate plan, including compoents that never before existed and carry it out to fruition. All of the components that lead to the collapse of the WTC existed well before the event. A child (Given enough cash for GPS receivers and airline tickets) could have carried it out.
This Jerry Weller?
October 19th, 2006 at 1:05 amNow what about the Ried situation do these guys not get. He bought land, held it several years, sold it for a profit and the entire transaction is reflected on his financial statement. For shame, in htis great real estate market, he made some money. Now let me see, did the increase in value occur because he slammed legislation through to build a highway close to his property – by earmar, NOPE!!!!
Now let us compare that with Mr. Haster’s land deal. He bought land in Illinois, held it, no improvements, then got a bill through the House by a nasty earmark that financed a highway close to his land and then sold it for a couple million.
You tell me which sounds fishier?
October 19th, 2006 at 2:02 amYes, that JERRY WELLER, (R) Ill. Buh-bye, Jerry! Now we know why you were such a leader in “No Child Left Behind” (another of Bush’s pet topics this week!).
Jerry Weller = nail in the coffin for the GOP
October 19th, 2006 at 2:32 amEveryone of you writing are so lucky! I live here in the midst of “RED STATE BLVD” with Trent Lott as my senator. He won’t debate the
October 19th, 2006 at 2:47 amDemocrat, Eric Fleming. He voted for the Tort Reform, now suing State Farm Insurance for his house insurance. But, I cannot even dare say anything against him, or even I get blasted. These people think he is GOD Almighty! Mar from Gulfport MS
Dear shocked. Yes, we are all shocked and awed by this administration. You are allowed to voice your opinion on this site. We love debate and that is why I love being a democrat. We respect your right to an opinion. We do not all agree with your opinion and that is okay. The truth is if we try to go on rep sites we are barred. Why do you want to be a part of any party that bars free speech. Lucky you that we listen to your opinion!
October 19th, 2006 at 3:23 amAnd still to date. Not one Republican evangelical (or religious right) has come out in care of a single Pages soul in the matter…………………………..
October 19th, 2006 at 4:23 amClinton was in office 37 days when the first WTC was bombed. Guess Bush 41 was at fault there. Also Clinton was not President when Ruby Ridge took place. Waco yes but it was already in place when Janet Reno was confirmed in March or April of 1993. Everyone uses “Bush was only in office 8 months when 9/11 took place”. How about those 37 days Clinton had.
October 19th, 2006 at 8:05 amMadelyn
Why is this not a subject of discussion on this site? If a Republican said this you poeple would demand he resign.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A ranking Democrat in the House of Representative is apologizing for saying an African-American Senate candidate “slavishly” supported the Republican Party.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said he meant no offense when he made the remark about Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, the GOP nominee for the seat being vacated by longtime Democratic Sen. Paul Sarbanes
October 19th, 2006 at 9:53 amThanks June #103…
…but they (inbred Bushites) NEVER cared about Reid’s deal in the first place…
..it’s just more Fox Propaganda modus operandi…
…”fair and balanced”…
…deception…
October 19th, 2006 at 11:00 amJust caught ‘Shocked’ remarks — I personally know ‘Repuglicans’ that spout that they are morally superior to any Democrats and that the GOP is always totally ‘right’ — I’ve heard this countless times – that Republicans are better Christians, better businessmen, better Americans and just all-round better apple pie “folk”. It’s stupid, disgusting just a little obscene and I keep wondering what these ‘wackos’ are smoking… where do they get this shit. It’s like they’re wearing eyepatches on both eyes.
October 19th, 2006 at 12:19 pmPresident Bush has declared this to be National Character Counts Week.â€
Does it mean that Bush and his administration is all of a sudden going to get character and stop scamming and start telling the truth? Yeah, right.
October 19th, 2006 at 12:54 pm109: Thank you for asking! Why isn’t this a big deal (aside from the obvious partisan commentary here…) ??
This is not a big deal here because “Slavish” is only a word. It was a word before the United States existed. It was a word before there were black slaves in North America. It, in fact, was most likely coined to describe white slaves, after they had been freed, when they failed to return to productive pursuits. (Due, no doubt, to the extreme trauma of their slavery.)
“Slavish” was first recorded as an English word between 1555 and 1565.
[Of note, in 1569 an English court ruled that England did not recognize the right of one man to own another -- in regards to a (presumably Caucasian or Asian) Russian slave brought back to England and then beaten. It was an assault case.]
Irregardless.
“Slavish” is not (nor has it ever been) a black slur. In the usage quoted by you (quoting CNN) its meaning is, clearly, “deliberately imitative; lacking originality.” A vocabulary is a tool to express precise meaning — until those less educated misunderstand, mischaracterize, or misinterpret the meaning. (Parenthetically this is why so many educated people shudder when President Bush speaks; his inability to clearly express himself leads suggests poor education and/or a poor critical though process.)
Hmm. “Deliberately imitative; lacking originality.” This appears in many ways to be an apt description of many of the “talking points Republicans” that surround the current administration. Yes? No? I can’t speak to the “African-American Senate candidate[‘s]†originality, but it cannot be denied that many Republicans over the last several years have slavishly parroted the Administration’s line. For good or bad.
As an assignment for the student, see if you can figure out why, in an election season, some less informed (or deliberately divisive) members of the Republican Party might be trying to create an issue surrounding the factual use of an innocuous word. Any ideas?
