Fox News is arguing that the media are “ignoring questions about Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) land deal.”
On Tuesday, Fox News host Sean Hannity told right-wing pundit Bob Novak that “you don’t see as much in the newspapers about this [the Reid land deal], Bob Novak, and I wonder if it would be the same if it was a Republican.” Bob Novak agreed, calling it “one of those strange things.” Watch it:
But in reality, the media have extensively covered the Reid land deal, while ignoring the $207 million earmark House Speaker Dennis Hastert inserted into the 2005 highway bill that greatly increased the value of his property in Illinois:
– CNN has devoted 50 times as much coverage to Reid’s case as to Hastert’s.
– According to a Lexis-Nexis database search, Fox News has mentioned the Reid land deal nine times, but has brought up the Hastert deal just three.
According to Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Scott Lilly, Hastert made an astounding 136 percent a year on what he invested, whereas Reid made an annual return of 29 percent, probably quite typical of the profits made by other Las Vegas real estate investors during the same period.
Reid immediately apologized for the oversight lapse and amended his 2001 disclosure forms. Hastert, on the other hand, has done nothing.

SEAN HANNITY: It shouldn’t be a surprise when we learn that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is in hot water for illegally using campaign funds to pay for Christmas bonuses at his condominium at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington. Well, now that he’s been caught, he is paying back the money.
And, of course, there’s the Senator Reid land deal which caught the attention of reporters last week. The minority leader has said that he will change his ethics filing with the Senate to represent more than $1 million that he made off the deal but, again, only after he was caught.Joining us now to explain all of this is the latest example of some Democratic excess. Syndicated columnist, FOX News contributor Robert Novak.
First thing that stands out here, you don’t see as much in the newspapers about this, Bob Novak, and I wonder if it would be the same if it was a Republican.
ROBERT NOVAK: You sure don’t. It’s one of those strange things.
Liars all.

Told us what, Ben?
October 19th, 2006 at 6:22 pmInteresting media review – but it should be noted that Reid did nothing untoward except for not noting the transfer from personal ownership to ownership by an LLC. He made no extra money from the deal, unlike Hastert’s deal…

Why dont you just take the FOX news approach and add a question mark at the end? Get your act together, Thinkprogress.
October 19th, 2006 at 6:28 pmObviously it wouldn’t be the same if it were a Republican — we have already seen that Hasterts two-million-dollar-profit deal was barely a blip in the news a few weeks ago.
October 19th, 2006 at 6:29 pmHastert went from an average salaried teacher to a congressman and became a very wealthy man on our tax dollars.
It is simple. Reid made a mistake. Hastert is a bitch.

The House of Representatives [official website] had approved [JURIST report] its own version of the bill [HR 6166 text] Wednesday by a vote of 253-168 [roll call], but House leaders decided to forego the process of reconciling the two nearly-identical sets of legislation in the interests of getting the measure passed before Congress adjourned. October 19th, 2006 at 6:41 pmFox need not worry about Reid they will have Karl Rove’s Oct. Surprise to report. Yes Karl is at it again the media will air ads that put Americans in fear of another attack. Yes these old threats by Bin Ladin will air all over and will be mailed to all GOP voters just to make sure they get out and vote the GOP in. Yes that’s the big plan flooding ads and mailers to put the fear back. Question will it work and will the voters put the child sex offenders back in office to attack more kids. Yes the big news for Bush supporters is Reid not the sex abuses on children. The church has to decide will it be sex or fear this election. Will the church support child sex offenders and follow the fear tactic as they use the word of God. We’ll see Nov. 7th

Reid had a clerical error that did not lead to him making money on the land deal. This is such a non-story, anyone trying to paint it as a scandal should be embarrassed.

Why did Reid have to wait for the ethics committee’s verdict before filing his amended disclosure?

October 19th, 2006 at 9:55 pmThis guy wrote this on how Fox viewers start there day on America’s news channel with a good dose of fox and friends enjoy the read.
Mitt Romney
And finally, this year marks the 10th anniversary of Fox News. To celebrate the occasion, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney issued a proclamation last week “declaring Sept. 19, 2006 Fox News Channel Day throughout the state,” according to TV Newser. Oh, you lucky… Massachusans? Massachussites? Never mind.
So how is one supposed to celebrate Fox News Channel Day? Well, it’s simple really.
First, wake up at the crack of dawn and put on your Stars & Stripes sweatsuit. Eat a quick breakfast while watching Fox & Friends, then hop into your Hummer and head down to the local WalMart for a fresh supply of car flags. Spend the rest of the morning affixing said flags to your vehicle. Don’t forget to “pre-wear” the flags by rubbing them in a puddle of grease and ripping holes in them.
At noon, have lunch (falafel with a side of freedom fries) while listening to The Radio Factor.
In the afternoon, hold a fun Weapons Of Mass Destruction Hunt in your back yard. Your kids will play the part of U.N. Weapons Inspectors. Tell them that you’ve hidden “WMDs” full of candy in the back yard and send them out to track them down. Go inside and have a beer.
After about an hour, your kids will probably come back and report that they’ve looked everywhere and can’t find anything. Inform them that you’re certain the “WMDs” are there, and if they don’t keep looking then the terrorists will have won all that delicious candy.
After another hour or so of fruitless searching, your kids will be deeply distressed and probably crying. Tell them that you’ve always known the U.N. were wimps. If cryingchildrenn bother you, a couple of OxyContin pills will take the edge off.
The traditional evening meal on Fox News Channel Day is a huge turkey dinner prepared by your wife who has been slaving thanklessly in the kitchen all day, which is exactly where she should be. After dinner, make sure you don’t offer to do the dishes, because that’s her job. If she complains, “Hannitize” her.
If you don’t have a woman handy to cook and clean for you, just get a plastic turkey with all the plastic trimmings and pretend it’s real. If you want to feel more manly while admiring your plastic turkey, wear a jacket with “Commander in Chief” written on the breast pocket.
After dinner, head out into the neighborhood for a game of Trick or Threat. Put on a Bill O’Reilly mask, knock on your neighbors’ doors, and when they appear ask, “Trick or Threat?” If they reply, “threat,” tell them that the Democrats are going to let Iran drop bombs full of bird flu down their chimneys. If they say “trick,” punch them in the face.
Alternatively, have a firework party in your back yard. While the fireworks are going off, tell your kids that this is what it’ll be like when you send them off to join the military. Then laugh out loud and tell them you’re just kidding. When the fireworks are over, burn an effigy of Alan Colmes on a bonfire made out Al Franken books.
Finally, to end your perfect Fox News Channel Day, go to a bar and get shitfaced. Pick a fight with someone a lot smaller than you are and give them the gift of freedom by kicking their ass, before passing out in a pool of your own vomit and waking up the next morning in the local drunk tank. When your wife comes to pick you up, blame it all on Bill Clinton.

From the previous Washington Time article…according to Jim Manley, Reid’s spokesman:
“The transaction was done, according to a statement by Manley, to make it easier for the Reid family and the Brown family to try to rezone the undeveloped land so a shopping center could be built on it.”
“The local zoning board, overruling a staff recommendation, granted the land’s reclassification and Reid’s share of the company was sold for $1.1 million to shopping-center developers in 2004, leaving him with a theoretical profit of $700,000.”
Zoning boards don’t usually overrule career zoning officials recommendations that zone property according to their use based on their location and the use type of adjacent existing properties….especially when members of this very board (i.e. Clark County) are under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for allegations of bribery.

“What Reid failed to disclose was his 2001 transfer of ownership of two parcels of land to Patrick Lane LLC – an entity in which he was partnered with one Jay Brown.
AP notes that Brown is a lobbyist, with reported links to organized crime. And he figures prominently in a federal criminal case – which concerns the bribery of members of the Clark County (Nev.) Zoning Commission by developers seeking changes to permit retail development on land they owned, vastly increasing its value.
This past summer, federal prosecutors introduced testimony at the bribery trial of former Clark County Commission chairman Dario Herrara that Brown had taken money from a Las Vegas strip club owner to influence the commission. Herrara was convicted of taking kickbacks. Brown was never called as a witness”

October 20th, 2006 at 12:07 amAnyone see that Hannity requested Democrats to say home and not vote-for the good of teh nation!
My letter to the pompous ass-
Mr. Hannity,
October 20th, 2006 at 1:28 amCan I call you Sean? We’ll make a deal with you. Half of us (D’s) will stay home on election day if you agree to resign from all further on-air or in-print diatribes for as long as you live. How about moving to Samoa or Indonesia? Maybe you could go be Bill O’Reilly’s cabana boy!
From the way it looks, the independents, moderate Republicans and disgusted evangelicals that are going to vote to wipe away this culture of corruption should make up for that loss of votes.
Doesn’t having Cheney’s hand shoved up your ass get a little tiring? Why don’t you stop being a puppet and join the world? Or, do you really like defending cronyism, imperialism, insider trading, the hiding of sexual predators and pre-emptive attacks on countries that are no threat to us? Don’t the words that Rove has fed you catch in your throat, once in a while? Are you totally bereft of compassion and conscience? You claim to a Christian. Do you recall Jesus saying, “I was naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and you fed me. Whatsoever you do for the least of mine, you do for me.” Or have you bought into the right-wing mantra that goes like “I got mine, screw you and keep your hands off?”
Has anyone seen that Hannity is asking Dems to not vote?

Media Matters lies:
CNN has never — not once — told viewers the central allegation of the Hastert controversy: that Hastert profited after winning federal funding for a highway that increased the value of his property.
The ChiTrib reports:
Kendall County, where the land is located, has one of the fastest-growing housing markets in the nation, and there has been a corollary rapid rise in land values.
Kendall County is one of the top five fastest growing counties in the US. Coupled with the rising land values across the country this has nothing to do with the proposed Prairie Parkway (that won’t be completed for at least 10 years!!!!) makes Media Matters, argument based on ignorance and is ludicrous.
At least Hastert followed the law and disclosed his deal.
October 20th, 2006 at 1:49 amI think what Sean Hannity was trying to say is that he is ignorant.
October 20th, 2006 at 2:23 amI have not seen FOX News mention GOP Sen. Larry Craig being outed for having sex in the Union Station, DC, restrooms with other males > in fact most likely paying cheap hookers for BJs!
October 20th, 2006 at 2:47 amOctober Surprise: USS Enterprise?
The Bush family, the whole clan, were at the blue blood cermonial champagne smashing at the launch of the brand new USSS George Bush Aircraft Carrier. More revolting than this shitty president having a billion dollar boat built in his name is the fact that the old dilapidated USS Enetrprise is part of the massive US Naval flotilla soon to arrive in prime water just outside the Persian Gulf. The problem with the USS Enterprise being apart of this mission is that the Enterprise is a White Elephant, just like the WTC Towers, outdated and not worthe the price of upgrades. Couple that with the brand new USS BushShitty carrier now available for service it seems to point to the USS Enterprise as a prime target for an false flag missle attack which might destroy it or at least land heavy damage and casualties. None the less, perfect fake justification for the attack on Iran which these hard-on neocons have been lusting after for the past 40 years, and quite uncontrollably so these last 3 years. Iran, the nation which has been warning of a quick shift from selling all their oil and gas in the hegemonies petro-dollar to the more competitively priced petro-euro. Something which is not so good for the US market and economy; at least under this present crooked economic system run by the Federal Reserve. So are we about to see some of our brave sailors die for bushit reasoons and the maintenance of the private wealth of Bush and his circle of international freinds. Our blood for their comfort, and all of it will be under false pretenses. What a sad day is coming soon I suspect. I hope I’m wrong. Or I hope if enough people get turned on to this potential plan or any other false flag operation presently underway, we can all shed light on it and prevent it from occuring.

#83 – Ha! Oh, my God, Tracy, you’re such a kidder! Citing “Free Republic” as if they’re a non-biased news source! Ha, ha, ha! Oh, my sides hurt from laughing, you make such great jokes!
That would be like citing the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and trying to spin them as a non-partisan source of news. Of course, they actually cite legitimate news sources, but hey, why quibble with someone who’s swigged the partisan kool-aide like you, Mr. Tracy.
http://www.dccc.org/news/Land_Grab/
October 20th, 2006 at 10:37 amI have YET to see anything about Hastert’s land deal…
…nor anything about Ca (R) Congressman Jerry Lewis’ Abramoff/Cunningham connections…
October 20th, 2006 at 10:52 amgreenback, the USS Bush full name is USS Geaorge Herbert Walker Bush. It’s Bush I, not Bush II. And the price tag on aircraft carriers is $5 billion, not $1 billion. Also, the Enterprise has years left in her fuel (planned replacement in 2013). And, beyond the obvious question of why the US would sink one of it’s own ships, is the question of why sink a carrier when they are leaving service faster than they are being built. The USS Kennedy is soon to be gone, leaving US carrier strength at an all time low.
I’m no fan of Bush, but this conspiracy theory doesn’t even begin to hold water.
October 20th, 2006 at 10:57 amALL corrupt politicians need to be called on the carpet when they misbehave. ALL of them. Party affiliation be damned.
Reid may not be a law-breaker, but he isn’t a saint, either. He can’t be, if he’s in public office.

“Of course, they actually cite legitimate news sources, but hey, why quibble with someone who’s swigged the partisan kool-aide like you, Mr. Tracy”
Yeah right your DCCC source is not biased?! They cite the MSM and don’t do any of their own investigating. If you actually have some information that contradicts what the Free Republic link that I posted states then lets hear it…otherwise your defence of they scab their news from the big news outlets dosn’t hold up.
“That would be like citing the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and trying to spin them as a non-partisan source of news. ”
That is EXACLTY what they are considering the very fact that the Reid scandal is not even listed in the DCCC link proves that this site is biased…oh but their name already says it.

As if the NY Times the LA Times or this blog is better? LOL!
October 20th, 2006 at 2:22 pm#88
I am glad you aren’t doing Reid’s ethics reporting…you would be fired by even him! LOL!
October 20th, 2006 at 2:27 pmoxillini, I sure as hell hope my suspicions are wrong. But thanks for your concern. I was wondering, are you informed as to what false flag operations are? They’re certainly conspiritors involved whenever one occurs. And the US practices flase flag operaions, certainly you are not denying this well researced and exposed fact.
October 20th, 2006 at 3:47 pm#104
October 20th, 2006 at 11:47 pmTracy you seem to forget that before the war began, this administration cited the NY Times everytime as a justification for their invasion based on the now discredited Judy Miller reports. So I think the news outlets you hate are far more credible.
I agree that Democrats might have ethics issues, but those are for them to hash out because come what may the Dems do not need an ethics lesson from a party that takes hush money from a pedophile and convicted felons, thank you very much.
Perhaps the Right Wing would not have a case if, for instance, the LA Times had printed a single word about Reid’s land deal or his gifts to staffers… The Times has not mentioned either story… EVER, so in Los Angeles at least, the Right has a valid point on this issue.
October 21st, 2006 at 12:13 pmBob Novak is such a total piece of crap. He writes for the Chicago Sun Times which is a Rupert Murdoch property. So when you see him playing Ed McMahon to his fellow piece of crap Sean Hannity he’s promoting Murdoch’s screwed up agenda. There used to be strict regulations about how many different news outlets one organization could own. This seems like a really good argument for such a thing. Honestly I don’t know how good it is for foreign interests to control any news outlets, I find it kind of hard to believe that any western European country would even consider allowing an American company to set up shop and grind an axe half the size of Murdoch’s. I don’t think EU countries would have allowed it even before Bush so effectively convinced the world what f–ktards we are.
Rupert Murdoch has single handedly corrupted the political debate and thus the minds of the casual news consuming swing vote in America beyond recognition. That guy’s a freak and he needs to be stopped, I think the laws to do so are in fact in place and it’s just a matter of Bush appointees conveniently interpreting them to favor this douchebag. How likely is it that if all the Murdoch outlets were anti Bush they wouldn’t have at the very least waged a campaign of intimidation with licensing hassles and abusive fines and probably tried to revoke them altogether.
October 21st, 2006 at 5:40 pmI live in Chicago and if I ever run into Bob Novak I’m going to punch him in the face and say it’s free speech!
October 21st, 2006 at 5:47 pmThey got nothing on Harry Reid.

October 21st, 2006 at 6:16 pm“I agree that Democrats might have ethics issues, but those are for them to hash out because come what may the Dems do not need an ethics lesson”
Then write Reid and Pelosi and tell them to keep their mouths shut about Republican ethicial behavior considering neither have a right to scorn those on the opposite side of the isle.

October 22nd, 2006 at 6:51 pmReid and Pelosi have every right, their ethical breaches are procedural. The ethical environment of the other side is legendary disregard, who never passes up a chance to accuse them of minor infractions even 15 years later.
Tough shit, if you guys want to call Democrats crooked for the ridiculously minor things Clinton and Reid have done after the freaking sale of our country then you can damn well take it. A lot more Republicans belong in prison.
October 22nd, 2006 at 8:10 pm#115
“Reid and Pelosi have every right, their ethical breaches are procedural.”
The hell they were! Rules are rules and full and accurate disclosure is what it is. This moral relativism defence is sooooo old.
