Cheney will fight like hell over this. The issue will become the fight for the records rather than the records themselves.
Then, when the information is eventually revealed, there won’t be much there anyway.
It’s an old magician’s trick. Keep the audience looking at your right hand, while you make the quarter disappear into your pocket with your left hand.
It’s the Secret Service who are fighting the logs’ release. This another area that must be investigated when democrats return to leadership: the politicization of the Secret Service.
Since when does this administration follow orders from activist judges; I’ll be in the corner holding my breath waiting on this. America’s Least Wanted
Stories have been written again and again that the Secret Service does not have the visitor records — after a month they put the records on a CD and give them to the White House and the National Archives (beginning after 2004). Then the Secret Service destroys their own records.
It is the White House that has the records – - which is why we STILL don’t know how many times Abramoff or Jeff Gannon/Guckert or anyone else in the rogues’ gallery visited.
Let’s see who the Veep is visiting with…Yes! We’ll see the dail chats with Pat Robertason, the nightly visits by shadowy male strippers and those late-night orgy’s with Abramoff. Yes!
Anyone investing Dick Cheney will be declared an enemy combatent by George Bush and will immediately be sent out of the country to be tortured and jailed until death or eternity whichever comes first.
I would like to know how this newspaper’s request to see the visitor log could legally make the Veep do so. Is there a law that states that government official’s visitor logs have to made public? Has this always been the case for past administrations? Just want to know the where this issue sprang from and why it is being handled the way it is.
Diet:
There is strong precedent for releasing visitor logs. Bill Clinton’s administration was repeatedly forced to release the access (WAVES) logs during the litany of investigations during his administration (FBI-Filegate, Fostergate, Lewinskygate, Travel Officegate, Coffeegate, Johnny Ching Asiagate).
Bush and Cheney and their staffs are trying to re-claim the Nixonian high ground of “executive privilege” where the workings of the President and the VP (as well as their senior staffs) can be secret and their meetings can be considered privileged.
Only it doesn’t work that way. They are elected public officials and US law, particularly the Freedom of Information Act, compels public release of government records. They have no right to privacy on that accord.
The offices (physically and as positions) belong to us, the American people. We have a right to know who visits them and what business is conducted in them. If the politicians want privacy, they can meet people in their homes. Cough it up, Cheney.
Doesn’t matter that they we able to get Clinton’s log. You must be in a pre-9/11 mindset. They *will* claim executive priviledge (or some other “security” reason). TERRORISTS, TERROR, FEAR!!!
Who is that “activist” judge? How dare anyone challenge Cheney?
Don’t tell him about law – he is the law; just ask him. He’ll get his lawyers to stall, stonewall and generally drag this out for the next two years if necessary.
The White House HAS the records on disc on file. THEY are the ones stonewalling this. But the SS will be a temporary distraction.
I gonna say door number two: Jeff Gannon!

October 19th, 2006 at 4:08 pmThanks. I thought it might be as simple as the Freedom of Information Act but I wasn’t sure if there was some specific reason.

All in the interest of “national security,” of course.
There will be many visits from the puppy farm, where “Dick” gets his daily dose of fresh puppy blood.
