[...] A Democratic staffer’s access to classified information was suspended because he requested a copy of a National Intelligence Estimate two days before it was reported in the New York Times. But, as the Washington Post notes, the New York Times was interviewing government officials about the NIE for weeks before the story was printed: Intelligence community sources, speaking anonymously because the NIE remains classified, have told The Washington Post that Times reporters were asking questions about the contents of that NIE weeks before publication of the story. In his story, Times reporter Mark Mazzetti wrote that over the weeks he had interviewed “a dozen United States government officials and outside experts . . . for this article.” He added that all “had either seen the final version of the document or participated in the creation of earlier drafts.” [...]

I happen to think it is important for my fellow posters here at ThinkProgress to know that your employment may be terminated solely based on what you say, and even post here -unless you happen to be a government employee.

I actually almost got fired for my own blog, even though I only post on it from home.

Seriously ... my former boss saved my butt by letting the powers that be know that I'd own the company if they did so.

Of course, they manage to control what I see by blocking all blogspot blogs and liberal blogs (except for TP, Carpetbagger, the Prospect -- Tapped and Horse's Mouth -- and Political Animal).

Meanwhile, ALL rightwing sites are open.

Go figure ...

Gregor,

Don't apologize. We're all off topic, frankly. At least yours was informative.

Though, I was able to quit a job from a private firm in California for religious discrimination and collect unemployment after an arduous process of proving it happened...

So, now, as a government employee, they couldn't fire me for saying that I'm an Atheist, but because I know they'd make something else up, I merely tell my co-workers that I am not religious so they'll stop talking about Armageddon and how America was founded upon Christian ideals around me. Works :)

My apologies for my long, completely off topic comments.

I happen to think it is important for my fellow posters here at ThinkProgress to know that your employment may be terminated solely based on what you say, and even post here -unless you happen to be a government employee.

It doesn't matter whether it's on or off work. Most states allow for termination at will.

I meant my posts to be a word of caution more than troll-feed.

Now, back to your regular programming....

Most Christians are total hypocrites. They don't want you to judge them, or be righteous over them, but they are often the first ones to be patronizing snobs to other people.

Jeebus would be proud...

You can get fired [...] for violating Civil Right laws which include not making racist comments against a co-worker, client, manager, subordinate, etc.
Comment by whatgreatliesthelefttells — October 20, 2006 @ 4:18 pm

Point No. 1: Contrary to what you stated before, freedom of speech is not unlimited. You just admitted so in this sentence.

But you can’t get fired for making generic racist comments.

Point No. 2: Yes, you can. From the Wall Street Journal, April 2006:

Last year, the Dover Post, a newspaper in Delaware, fired a reporter for making allegedly racist remarks in his blog.
In-House Bloggers Offer an Insider's View

That is just one example. Follow the link and check the quote by the labor lawyer. As a follow-up to that story:

Donegan said he approached the American Civil Liberties Union, but they would not take the case, he said, because Delaware law permits employers to fire employees at will.
Fired Reporter Says Blog Meant As Joke

"At will" -which includes saying things the employer disapproves of.

no one can fire you for making atheist or religious comments at work. and no one can fired you for making, expressing, etc your political views at work.

What I said above. Plus not only you can be fired for saying it at work, you can be fired for blogging about it off work.

Point No. 3: What you've said is only true if you are a government employee, or you live in a jurisdiction that bars employment termination under such circumstances. There is no federal law that makes it illegal to fire an employee who holds political views their employer disapproves of:

Unlike many state and federal employees, most employees in America working for private employers do not have any legal protection against discrimination on the basis of political affiliation or activity.[...] Only a mere handful of states (California, New York, and Washington, DC) have laws specifically making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of an employee’s political activity or affiliation

Work Place Fairness

since you claim to be so educated, i was sure you would know this.

Wha!? You are the one who made the claim to have taken HR and constitutional courses... How come you didn't know all this?

In summary: You can get fired for expressing political views at work. It is not illegal for your employer to do so.

In-House Bloggers Offer an Insider’s View

That is just one example. Follow the link and check the quote by the labor lawyer. As a follow-up to that story:

Donegan said he approached the American Civil Liberties Union, but they would not take the case, he said, because Delaware law permits employers to fire employees at will.
Fired Reporter Says Blog Meant As Joke

“At will” -which includes saying things the employer disapproves of.

no one can fire you for making atheist or religious comments at work. and no one can fired you for making, expressing, etc your political views at work.

What I said above. Plus not only you can be fired for saying it at work, you can be fired for blogging about it off work.

Point No. 3: What you’ve said is only true if you are a government employee, or you live in a jurisdiction that bars employment termination under such circumstances.

Wha!? You are the one who made the claim to have taken HR and constitutional courses… How come you didn’t know all this?

In summary: You can get fired for expressing political views at work. It is not illegal for your employer to do so.

I asked a religious friend of mine where exactly he though heaven was located, seeing as he was a man of Science and liked to know about outerspace...

He scratched his chin, said that that was a good question in a tone that meant that he had never bothered to question or consider it before...

We no longer discuss religion. :)

The name hijacker is
a) one who obviously didn't get enough attention from "daddy" and thus is crying out for help
b) one who obviously has never been involved with the opposite sex (or, if appropriate, the same sex), and thus has a "please, please, look at me" syndrome
c) all of the above
