I happen to think it is important for my fellow posters here at ThinkProgress to know that your employment may be terminated solely based on what you say, and even post here -unless you happen to be a government employee.

I actually almost got fired for my own blog, even though I only post on it from home.

Seriously … my former boss saved my butt by letting the powers that be know that I’d own the company if they did so.

Of course, they manage to control what I see by blocking all blogspot blogs and liberal blogs (except for TP, Carpetbagger, the Prospect — Tapped and Horse’s Mouth — and Political Animal).

Meanwhile, ALL rightwing sites are open.

Go figure …

Though, I was able to quit a job from a private firm in California for religious discrimination and collect unemployment after an arduous process of proving it happened…

So, now, as a government employee, they couldn’t fire me for saying that I’m an Atheist, but because I know they’d make something else up, I merely tell my co-workers that I am not religious so they’ll stop talking about Armageddon and how America was founded upon Christian ideals around me. Works :)

It doesn’t matter whether it’s on or off work. Most states allow for termination at will.

Point No. 1: Contrary to what you stated before, freedom of speech is not unlimited. You just admitted so in this sentence.

But you can’t get fired for making generic racist comments.

no one can fire you for making atheist or religious comments at work. and no one can fired you for making, expressing, etc your political views at work.

What I said above. Plus not only you can be fired for saying it at work, you can be fired for blogging about it off work.

Point No. 3: What you’ve said is only true if you are a government employee, or you live in a jurisdiction that bars employment termination under such circumstances. There is no federal law that makes it illegal to fire an employee who holds political views their employer disapproves of:

In summary: You can get fired for expressing political views at work. It is not illegal for your employer to do so.

I asked a religious friend of mine where exactly he though heaven was located, seeing as he was a man of Science and liked to know about outerspace…
