Bush Admits There Is No Evidence Iraqi Insurgents Are Trying To Influence U.S. Elections

In the past week, top Bush administration officials have been suggesting that insurgents in Iraq are increasing attacks in order to influence the U.S. midterm elections. Some highlights —

Vice President Cheney, 10/17/06:

I was reading something today that a writer — I don’t remember who — was speculating on increased terrorist attacks in Iraq attempting to demoralize the American people as we get up to the election. And when I read that, it made sense to me. And I interpreted this as that the terrorists are actually involved and want to involve themselves in our electoral process, which must mean they want a change.

President Bush, 10/18/06:

There’s certainly a stepped up level of violence, and we’re heading into an election. … They are trying to not only kill American troops, but they’re trying to foment sectarian violence. They [Al Qaeda] believe that if they can create enough chaos, the American people will grow sick and tired of the Iraqi effort and will cause government to withdraw.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, 10/19/06:

[I]t is possible, although we don’t have a clear pathway into the minds of terrorists, it is possible that they are trying to use violence right now as a way of influencing the elections.

But these claims are completely without any basis in reality. Yesterday on ABC This Week, President Bush admitted to host George Stephanopoulos, “I don’t have any intelligence that says that” insurgents in Iraq are trying to influence the election. Watch it:

Full transcript below:

STEPHANOPOULOS: And for the first time the President acknowledged parallels to Vietnam. It came when I asked for his response to ‘New York Times” columnist Tom Friedman’s contention that we’re now seeing an Iraqi version of the Vietcong’s 1968 Tet offensive that turned American public opinion decisively against the war.

BUSH: He could be right. There’s certainly a stepped up level of violence and we’re heading into an election.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So they’re trying to influence the elections?

BUSH: It could be. I don’t know. I haven’t – I don’t have any intelligence that says that.

    sheeesh.

  2. Daryll says:

See Dems, Bush is an honest man and leader.

  3. GodfryDaniel says:

    “I don’t have any intelligence…”
My God! Bush spoke the truth!

  4. RUCerious says:

The prezidunce, telling the truth –
    “I don’t have any intelligence”

  5. RUCerious says:

So, Daryll, the man contradicts his own statement of less than a week ago, and that is somehow being honest?
Please go somewhere quiet an pray for a couple of weeks.

  6. Think+Half+Ass+Progress says:

How flip floppy awkward! MOST UNCOMFORTABLE!!

  7. pgl says:

Wow – the President admits that his own press secretary and the Vice President are liars. Stop the presses!

  8. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Heh, heh. “Fomenting sectarian violence” – I’ll bet that juice packs more punch than the moonshine around Crawford. Heh, heh. I wonder if it tastes good, too. We gotta beat those un-sure-gents and get to their fomenting stills. Gotta get some intelligence on how they make the stuff. Hope it’s cheap. Course it doesn’t matter Dicky and Hallyburton will buy me all I want. Heh, heh. Stay that course!

  9. Think+Half+Ass+Progress says:

You know that feeling when you smell flatulence on an elevator or in a small room?
I’m having that feeling right now!

  10. gorn says:

Darryl, please stop bearing false witness. It pisses God off when you break his commandments.

  11. JaneESchneider says:

Watch, even though Bush admits that there’s no evidence, he’s still going to use the same lie again and again, because he still believes it. He doesn’t need any messy facts to intrude on his belief.

  12. MakesYaThink says:

    Daryll,

Hey did you hear they found a way of talking to god?? IT REALLY WORKS!!! BUSH DOES IT TOO!!!

Okay but if I tell you, you can’t tell anyone, because you know god is busy and all that… But here’s what you do…

ALL you icky libruls please close your eyes, this is a little secret for my brother Daryll, and his other brother.

You know those plastic bags you see that say don’t let children play with these? Yah good.. I knew you would.. So you place one of those over your head for like an hour..

The warning to not let children play with them is just like if your kid was dialing 911 all the time on the phone. God is a busy being and stuff and can’t be having kids calling him every 2 minutes.

  13. Clare says:

Those comments about insurgents increasing violence because of American mid-term elections are absolutely ridiculous. People are dying by the hundreds of thousands, the infrastructure has been destroyed, Americans have been torturing and murdering Iraqis, and all the insurgents care about is whether Lieberman will be reelected. Good Lord. I hope everyone reading these comments in the news realizes how stupid these Bush officials are.

  14. Jamie+Z says:

What a moron. That’s all I can say. Bush lies to us way too often, and seriously, doesn’t what he and his administration do constitute grounds for impeachment? He is absolutely not fit to be the most powerful man in the world.

    Jon Stewart for President.

  15. Austin+Fire says:

All things point to the fact that after the Democrats win the House and the Senate that Cheney and Rumsfelt are GONE. Hip Hip Hoorah!!!!

  16. dd says:

a key Republican attack on Kerry was that he would allow our European Allies concerns drive our foreign policy… now Bushco lets the “terrorists” drive our foreign policy and they’re suggesting that “terrorists” are trying to affect our domestic elections through increased violence… DUMB.

  17. starcane says:

When I first heard them say they were doing it to help the dems, I wondered where the hell they are getting info about our election. Isn’t Baghdad without power 20 hours a day?

  18. dd says:

  21. Rick+Brannon says:

what we have is republicans trying to influence elections.

  22. s says:

I GOT IT…………LIGHT BULB TIME. ( Even if I may not be the brightest of all bulbs…)

Here it is. The Pubs/Cons or whatever we call them have this strategy. It’s called “throw enough mud on the wall and some of it will stick.” They have succeeded in putting the idea that the insurgents are just riled up because of the election ( the insurgents are not winning…ooohh no! ) into at least SOME heads. The Bushies can always deny it later..but for some it will stick. They are vote collecting….a little here….a little there. They say everything…cover all bases….doesn’t matter if it adds up to an integrated vision as a whole ….not in the least.

  23. ForTruth says:

    S,

I think you are onto something.

  24. Roger_Roger says:

You don’t need an intelligence report to know who the terrorist want in power.

    Option A:

Crazy Christain attack your ass for looking at me wrong Bush.

    or

    Option B:

A group of people that will go to the UN to sign a letter saying your wrong when you kill us and do nothing more.

HRMM. If I was a terrorist I would choose B!!

    Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2006 @ 3:34 pm

Uh, Daryll, what then do you say about Bush’s claim that his policy has never been stay the course”? Yup, that’s right dumbass, Bush said that just yesterday, and White House Counselor Dan Bartlett repeated it today.

  27. RealScientist says:

Roger_Roger, you never answered my question from the other thread. How are we going to find an Army to attack North Korea? Tell me, RR, are you in favor of reinstituting the draft?

And don’t come back with your usual straw man BS. It just makes you look like a pathetic moron.

  28. s says:

ForTruth…..yeah I think it makes sense.

    Because:
They want to divide and conquer – it weakens us
They want to distract and divert – it weakens us
They want to confuse ( ala everyone shaking their heads with each no insane contradictory statement)- it weakens us becuase instead of concentrating on what thugs they are, we are trying to dissect what they say about this or that issue.
They want to hit all bases – it will help them stay in power

The point? Once people stop asking “how can they say that..or he said the exact opposite yesterday!”
We’ll be in line to take back power. i.e. the substance of what BushCo says, contradictory or not, IS NOT THE ISSUE. The issue is that they are lying criminals. Period

  29. s says:

    katy…..:) Great. gotcha

  30. Mikey says:

#24, Good point Roger, and maybe it was the terrorists who lured countless unsuspecting republican congressmen into a life of lying, crime, pedophilia, and unethical behavior. Those ‘terrists’ are genius! I better vote republican just to piss them off.

Seriously though, your complete absence of logic validates that you are one of THEM.

  31. ForTruth says:

I told Roger on that last thread to go sign up for his North Korea tour. He never answered me either.

Read my lips, EVERYTHING those whacky liberals, bloggers and Deaniacs have said about me and my party are dead on. They had me pegged from the get go.

But I’m the Unitary Executive now and I’m gonna protect you from now on. So y’all just shut the phuque up and no one will get hurt… unless I know about it.

    Hard To Be A Republican

  36. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

WOW – how did that happen!! Sorry, guys! Here’s the completed post

    Roger Roger

How about Option C (oh, that’s right you guys can only count to two):

The terrorists DON’T CARE who leads the U.S. – as long as there is division and disunity, perceived or real.

Now, Americans, on the other hand, need to start caring about who is leading the U.S. – and demand clarity, honest debate, transparency, maintenance of rights, etc or the terrorists win.

  37. RUCerious says:

I’d think option C. Vote for the party that squanders our national treasure in a dead end occupation that increases the number of radical jihadists exponentially.

  38. Roger_Roger says:

    RealScientist,

Our Military has over 1 million members right now. In Desert Storm, we sent 500,000. We have less then 250,000 fighting in the middle east. We easily have over 500,000 to fight North Korea.

  39. Pissed+Off says:

the terrorists are actually involved and want to involve themselves in our electoral process, which must mean they want a change.

Isn’t this the same thing as “regime change” that terrorists like Cheney and the other neo-cons have been trying to bring about all over the Middle East?

Turn around is fair play in my ind.

  40. Yikes says:

“We easily have over 500,000 to fight North Korea.”

What a moron. If you and your army of 500,000 attack North Korea, what, in your limited imagination, do you think the Chinese will do? Will they just let the US go in and, if they win, set up some bases? Or do you think they will not like it very much and join North Korea in fighting the US? This isn’t a game of Risk you idiot.

  41. MakesYaThink says:

    Roger_Roger,

Haha, we would need 100 million to invade NK. Are you really this stupid or do you play an idiot online for our fun?

Think about how many soldiers a foreign army would need to invade the USA? Even peace lovers like myself would fight for my country in a more honorable battle…

  42. RealScientist says:

Our Military has over 1 million members right now. In Desert Storm, we sent 500,000. We have less then 250,000 fighting in the middle east. We easily have over 500,000 to fight North Korea.

    Comment by Roger_Roger — October 23, 2006 @ 4:47 pm

    What…an…idiot.

Those troops were deployed for a very short period of time against a cream puff opponent, at a time when the U.S. was not fighting any other wars. Now we have been at war for 3 1/2 years. Our military is exhausted, their supplies are running short, and there is a HUGE backlog of maintenance on their equipment. Many soldiers have rotated through Iraq 3 or 4 times. Our own military leaders have repeatedly warned that the military is near its breaking point. And you can’t just send our entire Army overseas to fight. They need vast logistical support from the U.S., and those logistical systems are presently under severe strain caused by the long, hard war in Iraq.

You have the mentality of a third grader.

  43. TerrytheTurtle says:

Oooh, did you get out your Risk board Rogerx2?

  44. Roger_Roger says:

    Realscientist,

If you feel that our current troops can’t pull this job off, then I am in agreement that we need a draft. If any country is threatening the peace of us or our friends, we need to engage them. It would be retarded to just stand back and let them operate freely simply because we feel we don’t have the man power. So, let there be a draft then.

  45. Ronin_Tetsuro says:

    #40

As always, RR, you are completely insane. We’ve tried the ground war with the Koreans before. Check your history on how that one went down. And while your head is in the texts, you should also look up how many empires have successfully survived a two front war.

DO you even care about the state of America after all this war-mongering? Of have you submitted yourself to the childish mentality that we must ‘win’ at all costs? For god’s sake, man. We’re talking about the fate of EVERYONE here. This world, in it’s already precarious climate, will not sustain a Third World War. It doesn’t have the resources to give or the ability to cope with more displacement and destruction.

This isn’t about your goddamn politics anymore. This is about the fate of humanity. You can shrug that off all you want, but you know that’s true deep down. How can you advocate the destruction of people that are your brothers? How?

I hope you can’t sleep at night. And I hope you’r ejudged appropriately when the time comes.

  46. MagickMuffin says:

I find it interesting that Dick read somewhere but can’t remember where or who wrote the article that stated the insurgents were trying to influence the elections.
Yeah right Dick. You don’t remember who wrote the hit piece.

The only INSURGENTS trying to influence our elections are the current US MisAdministration officials!

  48. Quadrajet says:

But Roger, on the other thread you were suggesting that we bump our troop level in Iraq to 400,000 – and now you want to throw another 500,000 into N. Korea? Then there’s Afghanistan. So do you think the 50 or so troops left (assuming your million man army numbers are correct) will be able to cover everything else? And you’re going to pay for all of this by eliminating social security and medicade? You’re certifiable Roger.

  49. TerrytheTurtle says:

Quadra – I can see where Rogx2 is going. If you eliminate social security and medicare then you’ve got millions of retirees suddenly needing to go back to work to pay for their food and drugs. Roger can open new munitions factories all over the US and staff them with aging Grans and Granddads, making cluster bombs, MK77 phosphorus munitions, and the DU rounds which are ideal for old folks: half of them are going to get the big C anyway.

It’s perfect. Then Chimpy can annex Austria, give an ultimatum to Czechoslovakia….I see it all… its beautiful, links, rechts, links, rechts – al together now: “Oh Fatherland fatherland show us the sign, your children are waiting to see…”

  50. CyraBrown says:

Roger2- You are a SUCKER!! They had you at “Let’s Roll.” They are laughing at you, you know.

  51. Mikey says:

#49, the story in your link reminds me of a video from Bin Laden over a year ago when he stated that his intent was to bankrupt the U.S.. Since we’re spending hundreds of Billions over there, the last thing he wants us to do is leave Iraq.

So Roger, how does that fit in with your retarded logic?

  52. Roger_Roger says:

    Let me retract,

I feel we should give Osama a rose and beg for peace. Furthermore, we should shift to a Islamic State complete with Islamic economic and social policies. Get your veils ready!!!

  53. Mikey says:

    “Let me retract”

Yes, please retract your head from your ass.

  54. CyraBrown says:

#54-Roger2- GWB doesn’t care about OBL, so why do you? Do you doubt your leader? Don’t think he can protect you? Where’s the ‘love’?

  55. Ronin_Tetsuro says:

    54

If I knew you weren’t attempting to ‘appease the pinko liberals’ I’d kick you in the teeth. Policy only became black and white when this Administration decided it was. It’s never been a smart strategy and now we have concrete proof why.

65% of Americans are awake and hoping for change for the sake of the future. the only thing that stands between total Empire meltdown and retraction from the brink of destruction is… people like Roger_Roger.

  56. DallasNE says:

But Bush has no intelligence to link the Democrats to Iraqi terrorist attacks. You can bet he tried awfully hard to come up with something to that effect. Just like the WMD debacle, Bush fails again.

    Duh!

  57. gorn says:

    Roger Roger #24

    Nice false dichotomy:

Option A: Crazy Christain attack your ass for looking at me wrong Bush.

Option B: A group of people that will go to the UN to sign a letter saying your wrong when you kill us and do nothing more.

Even if these were the only two choices, which they are not, you would still be wrong, because:

    1) Crazy muslims are ecstatic to fight and kill crazy christians. Both crazy groups want to go down in blazing friggin armageddon.

Granted, the world would be much better off without either group, if you could only find a way to kill each other but nobody else.

    2) Your description of alternative B is inane. It doesn’t represent any alternative that any realistically potential US leader would propose.

What’s it like to drink the koolaid, anyway? Do you see lots of groovy colors before you pass out?

But by all means, please enlist. Surely you could do more for your ideology on the front lines than on a blog.

  58. mighty+aphrodite says:

I don’t know, Amanda…if I were an average middle-of-the-road voter, I might think an increase in attacks by Iraqi insurgents during the “holy” month of Ramadn would help Dems. (Could this be why many Dem pols are against counter-terror surveillance programs and banking oversight?) Hmmm….

  59. roberto says:

I use up blog space to reiterate the observation of previous commenters. This is the real story here.

My God! Bush spoke the truth!

  60. gorn says:

an increase in attacks by Iraqi insurgents during the “holy” month of Ramadn would help Dems.

You could equally argue that it would increase the fear factor and make people want to support the Reps. Certainly that has been the Rep modus operandi for years now. Cheney: you can vote for us, or you can vote for the terrorists.

OK, counselor, provide the evidence, the facts. I dare you to name even a FEW Democrats, politicians or otherwise, who are against any and all such intelligence gathering.

  62. The+Unknown+Democrat says:

Reply to #24 by Roger Roger. Roger you are a fool and when people like you think the terrorist win. No on has called for a UN resolution against any terrorist except you. So if that’s your plan it will not work. The only way to win a war on terror is to find the terrorist and kill them, so far the administration can’t find Osama so I guess they can’t kill him. Oh I forgot they got distracted by Sadam the mastermind of 9-11, so we invaded Iraq. Well my intelligent friend we invaded and now we can’t uninvade because you boss is too stupid to defeat the terrorist that he created.

  76. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

PLC there are only strawmen in MA’s (and Star Jones’s) world. Stop being all liberal-ish by insisting on talking about what real people have actually said and done.

  78. Careful+reader says:

As with several Think Progress posts in the past several weeks, this one doesn’t prove what is purports to prove.

The post tries to suggest that the president (or his administration) has changed course, first stating that there was proof that the terrorists were meddling in our elections and then backing off the claim because there was no evidence to support it.

That’s not what happened at all. Read the quotes more closely:

In the first quote Cheney made clear that he was giving his “interpret[ation]“of events, and not an established fact.

In the second quote, Bush gives the unremarkable opinion that the enemy is trying to cause harm to the US so that the US will leave. This has nothing to do with the point TP is trying to make–that insurgents are trying to affect our elections.

In the third quote, Snow raised the “possib[ility]” that insurgents were trying to affect elections, but stated “we don’t have a clear pathway into the minds of the terrorists.”

This is pretty much what the president said in the clip: There increased violence as we get closer to the election, but “I just don’t know” if that reflects an intentional strategy to affect the elections.

The President may be wrong on a lot of things, but it doesn’t seem like he’s committed any of the sins TP accuses him of in this post.

Surely TP can do better than this.
