ThinkFast: October 23, 2006

Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder writes in a new book that Bush’s frequent references to God in their meetings before the Iraq war had made him wary. “What worried me, despite a relaxed atmosphere to our talks, and to a certain degree what made me skeptical was how much it came through that this president saw himself as ‘God-fearing’ and saw that as the highest authority,” he said.

Majorities of Iraqi youth in Arab regions of the country believe security would improve and violence decrease if the U.S.-led forces left immediately, according to a State Department poll.”

Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) called yesterday “for direct talks with North Korea aimed at easing a nuclear standoff.” Direct talks are “inevitable,” Lugar said. Specter added, “I think we ought to use every alternative, including direct bilateral talks.”

The Sudan peace agreement signed in May “is in disarray.” The “hardening conflict” is “increasingly taking place along porous borders among some of the least stable countries in Africa, threatening to ignite a wide conflagration in the heart of the continent.”

“Iceland broke a global moratorium on commercial whaling, killing an endangered fin whale for the first time since the 1980s.” Fin whales are on the International Conservation Union’s “red list” of endangered species.

A company headed by Neil Bush — President Bush’s brother — and partly owned by his parents is “benefiting from Republican connections and federal dollars targeted for economically disadvantaged students under the No Child Left Behind Act.”

“Nearly two million people in southern Afghanistan will need food aid this winter because of drought, the UN and Afghan government have warned. … The food shortage is being blamed on intensified fighting against Taliban insurgents in the troubled southern provinces and expanding cultivation of opium poppies instead of food.”

“Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-LA), already enmeshed in the ex-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) page scandal, now faces a new controversy” as a former staffer has sued Alexander’s chief of staff for “sexual advances,” “ogling and touching,” and other harassment.

And finally: ABC news profiles attractive congressional candidates. Some crack analysis: “When Democrat Diane Farrell ran for Congress two years ago, she wore her hair up in a bun. It was easier to manage. Since then, a campaign adviser has suggested that for this year’s run, she might want to consider wearing it down.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Watch Democracy Now. A very good program on the latest adminstration attempts to prop up the government of Iraq. They are trying to find someone outside the country to come in and take over. The Iraqis want us out so that they can heal. WE NEED TO GET OUT. It isn’t our decision to stay. It’s the Iraqis. They want us to leave.

  2. MakesYaThink says:

Bush makes me feel comfortable about the upcoming elections, after all god told him to invade Iraq, and told him that Katrina wouldn’t breach the levees. God told him to stay the course.

Is Sen. Specter once again barking with No Bite? Did he lose his rubber stamp?

    Inquiring minds want to know…

If the ONLY reason for no direct talks is “It’s What They Want!“, then this Administration needs to stop sucking it’s thumb and engage in talks. If Direct Talks achieve our goals, Why not??

Here’s Susan B Anthony’s take on just that thing:

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.

  8. Jason+M.+Hendler says:

So many topics, so little time …

Only multilateral talks work with North Korea, because the US is not in a position to punish them when they break treaties. China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and Japan must negotiate with North Korea together, or else they won’t impose sanctions together. We saw how China evoked an apology from Kim Jung Il for his nuclear test this last week, so we are following the right process. Bilateral talks between US and North Korea failed under Clinton, because North Korea feared no sanctions from US, because China and Russia weren’t a party to the agreement, and would bypass US economic sanctions.

As for Darfur, thanks to Dems screaming for isolationism, the US will not get involved with the Sudan, even though it is going through the same struggle as Afghanistan against a Taliban-like movement. It truly is another front on the War On Terror, in which the US is completely absent – thanks to Dems. Just as well, the African Union doesn’t care either, sending only a token number of troops, so we should just let Africa be overrun by the muslims, Indians and Chinese – Africa is their manifest destiny.

Thanks to progs, Schumer and Emanuel are going to look like geniuses, because centrist Clintonista candidates will fare well in this election, while prog candidates like Lamont and Webb will lose be enormous margins. You truly are the vaccine our political system needed.

    #4 christy2,

I’m not saying this didn’t happen, but keep in mind that the term “casualties” refers to both killed and wounded. Not all 300 of our “casualties” were, necessairly, fatalities. I am trying to find independent confirmation of this story, too, including exactly how many people were killed. (Some definitely were, according to every report I’ve read, but those reports are unclear as to whether these casualties were Iraqi or some other nation’s such as ours.)

If you find any more reliable information, do post a link.

Nukes tested under Bush = 1 (6 years in office)

Seems like Clintons strategy worked pretty damn good to me. Now turn back on the Radio I think Rush has more talking points you can spew.

And blaming dems for Darfur, BULL SHIT, who controls congress? Who has signing statements where he pretty much does what he wants?

Now STFU, you’re retarded talking points carry no weight here. Why not hang out on redstate where you idiots can circle jerk together. Maybe you can get Foley to lick up the mess.

You really short-change the historical precedents set down by our leaders when you write, “It was negligence / incompetence of the Clinton administration that led to both 9/11 and N. Nope, no attack there

Your argument that N. Korea didn’t test nuclear weapons under the Clinton administration is like saying Al Queida never attacked New York during the Clinton administration
Yep, that is exactly the argument. N.Korea nukes during Clinton’ era…none (end of story). New York attacks during Clinton (one, and perpetrators caught, convicted, and jailed) New York attacks during Bush (more than one, lest ye forget the Anthrax mailings. 6 years later, main perpetrator, still at large)

It was negligence / incompetence of the Clinton administration that led to both 9/11 and N. Korea’s nuclear test
I absolutely love the “when all else fails, blame Clinton” card! It has proven, time and time again, that unilateral talks with NK prevented any Nuclear weapons deployment. Once dubya “reneged”, guess who went back to rebuilding?

Jason, your tactics are misleading and misguiding. You come off sounding intelligent, but then you post stuff like “Stanford, an Ivy league school”, or “Don’t worry, no liberal will ever protect you and your country”, or “Dan Quayle was set up to misspell potato”, or my personal favorite, “I can suspend my Christianity”

US Armada In Place For Iran War?
    23rd of October 2006
    by Jay Randal

The Iraq War/Occupation is a horrendous fiasco, but nonetheless President George W. Bush wants another debacle war, so he dispatched a naval armada to Iran.

Over this past weekend the taskforce fleet arrived off the coastline of Iran, now in place for the Pentagon’s orders to launch an attack, waiting for the go-ahead.

Bush can just nod to Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, whenever he so chooses, then the Navy and Air Force can fire the cruise missiles and drop the bombs on Iran.

The Bush Regime does not seem to care to notify the Congress of its intentions , but nor do members of the House/Senate seem concerned , so war looms now.

A premeditated attack on another sovereign nation is a criminal act of aggression, not much different from Hitler’s attack on Poland, but the press acts oblivious.

Most Americans are too busy working, with concerns about their families, to notice the brewing war on Iran and unaware that the conflict might become WWIII.

  35. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

You could change that to “even ten minutes, while Bush is in office” and people like Jason will still absolve Bush of any responsibility. I have a theory on that – based on cognitive dissonance, the 35% die-hard Bushies cannot hold Bush accountable for his policies and their consequences, because doing so would mean holding themselves responsible for electing him.

I’m halfway through Dawkins, he shines sometimes, but other times is stretching (especially on his strawmem demolition of the Gospels – he should have left that to someone else). According to Barrons, the candidate who spends the most money wins 93% of the time and in recent years that number is 98% of the time.

  69. Gregor Samsa says:

I was going to take a stab at Mr. Hendler’s inane rants, but I see I am late to the party. Some of you already took apart his sad attempts at blaming Clinton. However, there are two statement I would like to address:

[...]the US will not get involved with the Sudan, even though it is going through the same struggle as Afghanistan against a Taliban-like movement.
    Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 23, 2006 @ 9:40 am

I have already corrected Mr. Hendler many times but he keeps repeating this warped version of the facts, proving to me he is no “debator” but a willful obfuscator and distorter of the events around him.

Sudan’s Janjaweed are unlike the Afghanistan’s Taliban in more than one way:

The Taliban were an insurgent group against a foreign occupation. The Janjaweed are a pro-government militia, being used to put down a separatists movement in Darfur.

The Taliban had foreign funds, and weapons. The Janjaweed are funded, and armed by the Sudanese government

The Taliban’s were a fundamentalist religious movement, bent on creating a Islamic state. The Janjaweed are motivated by money and power Sudan’s government allows them to have.

The only thing the two groups have in common is that they are Muslim. That “connection” is enough for Mr. Hendler to try to establish non-existing parallels.

so we should just let Africa be overrun by the muslims

Yeah, would someone please help Sudan before it is overrun by Muslims? While you are it, would you help Egypt or Morocco too?

Hello, Mr. Hendler? Close to 70% of all Sudanese are Muslim. I already told you several times. Moreover, close to half of all Africans are Muslim.

Keep repeating your nonsense. It shows your wanton dishonesty.

Okay, now I know you are being sarcastic. This absolutely cracked me up! Thank you for such fine wit and humour

  72. unbelievable says:

The bible says, “seek ye first the kingdom of god”.

So? The Koran, and Torah say a lot of stuff too. We just dismiss one more religious book than you do. And yours is no less silly.

That’s something that I know your party won’t practice, because your party is consisted of ill repute (view Hillary Clinton’s and John Kerry’s thoughts).

You, the murders, call us immoral? That’s rich.

We will continue to lead our country by God’s law, Amen.
    Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2006 @ 12:37 pm

No, you won’t continue to lead this nation by corruption and lies. Your days are numbered.

  75. Daryll says:

Jesus Christ (whomever your are), Jesus said, “GO YE IN TO THE ALLLLLL THE WORLD AND PREACH HIS BLESSINGS AND GOSPEL”. You just can’t take it that an actual President seeks God. Do I sense conviction?

  76. unbelievable says:

unbelievable, maybe if you cease your sinful ways,

Sinful? I’m a vegan pascifist. That makes me more moral than those of you condoning the murder of innocent Iraqi civilians and American troops.

If there were a god, he’s sooner approve of me using my brain to condemn your evil ways than he would of you speaking words you do not practice.

and live your life biblically, Jesus will give you insight.

Jesus died a couple thousand years ago. Not much he’s doing for anyone – including molested children and cancer patients.

Hate 9:17, O.K., your sin will take you to hell if you don’t change your ways.

There is no Hell. Unless you include reading your inane rants…

That fear-mongering bullsh!t doesn’t work on people like me who know the TRUTH… god IS dead!

That’s the reason why I love President Bush, he’s a man of god/morals/values.
    Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2006 @ 12:43 pm

No he isn’t. He’s a genocidal hypocrite without an ounce of morality or compassion. And you’re a fool for ‘believing’ otherwise.

  77. TerrytheTurtle says:

He also said that you should be private with your religion.

Sounds like Jeebus was either misquoted (gasp!) or a hypocrite… Explains why so many Christains are.

He also had something to say about those who make conspicuous demonstrations of their piety.

  80. Parrotlover77 says:

Bush seeks money and he is exploiting Christians’ blind devotion to anybody else who claims to be faithful.. Get a clue. When has he actually done anything to benefit the average faithful American?

  84. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Daryll,

Jesus Christ may be your Lord and Savior, but not mine. I would appreciate it if you would not refer to Christ using the first person plural possessive form. (Say “my”, not “our”.)

And “Hate 9:17″??? Is that supposed to be some biblical chapter and verse you’re quoting? I may be an atheist, but I’m fairly certain there’s no book in the Bible called “The Book of Hate”. Not that you could tell that from the way the religious right acts in this country.

I guess living in the South with people who sound exactly like Daryll, I think he’s probably serious. He’s been around before spouting similar nonsense.

If he’s parody, he’s damn good at it.

Daryll, if you’re satire – you’re the man! If not, you are seriously disturbed.

  89. Daryll says:

Gregor Samsa, believe it. I’m a Jesus fanatic and consider those who love Jesus as my brothers and sisters in Christ. George Bush loves Jesus so he’s my brother in christ. I consider the rest of you dems as my associates because you’re not in the realm of god. Follow Acts 2:38.

  90. RUCerious says:

Daryll does remind me of my maternal grandfather.
He was a drunken SOB who proclaimed himself a preacher.
He’d lecture us, just like Daryll, when we were kids. We all learned about being saved from that reprobate.
I did, however, inherit my musical talent from him, so it just goes to show, even Daryll must have some redeeming quality in him. Like his penchant for entertaining us with his religiosity.

  91. DRxJ says:

I’m a Jesus fanatic and consider those who love Jesus as my brothers and sisters in Christ

Then you consider me a brother! I just because I disagree with pretty much everything that you believe with this administration, you still love me?
    Awesome dude

  92. barfly says:

I’m a Jesus fanatic and consider those who love Jesus as my brothers and sisters in Christ. Comment by Daryll

I’m a Jesus “fanatic” also, but because of his message, not some supposed divinity. You can take the message to heart without glorifying the messenger. And I’m sure this view damns me to hell . . .

  93. Gregor Samsa says:

George Bush [...] he’s my brother in christ. [...] you’re not in the realm of god.
    Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2006 @ 1:15 pm

    I rest my case.

  94. Fascism+American+Style says:

Is it just me or does the Chancellor seem to be thinking, “I can’t decide if this guy is a total nut job or is he just inconveniently stupid?”

  95. Daryll says:

DRxJ, barfly, before you can consider yourself a child of god, do you commit fornication, adultery, drink strong drink (beer liquor), covet thy neighbor’s property, lie, cheat, steal, use the lord’s name in vein, divorce your mate and re-marry, lust the opposite sex, curse, judge, etc.? If you continuously commit these sins without fear then you’re not a child of god and a brother or sister of mine in christ. Jesus loves you.

  96. Wilco says:

Jesus loves you, Daryll does not.

  97. dlet says:

George Bush […] he’s my brother in christ. […] you’re not in the realm of god.

    Comment by Gregor Samsa

But he did capitalize George Bush. I guess we can see whom he holds inthe highest regard. He is worshipping the Golden Calf.

  98. TerrytheTurtle says:

“covet thy neighbor’s property, lie, cheat, steal” – well that wraps it up for capitalism, I suppose.

judge – oops St Darryl, I guess that bans you from the happy clappy club… that’s a tough break. Let’s recap where Darryl falls on the ’stony ground’ here: “unbelievable, maybe if you cease your sinful ways, and live your life biblically,”

Over to you JC: “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.”

  99. Wilco says:

But he did capitalize George Bush

But the president should either be referred to as Mr. President or Mr. Bush, nothing more familiar, like, say, Bush. Or Ass.

  100. dlet says:

How about Mr. President Bush Ass? Is that okay Wilco?

  101. RUCerious says:

In case anyone was interested, I’m out of the happy club, big time.
However, I do know who I am, and am at peace with myself. Most of the teachings of the masters are varying iterations of the golden rule, not the golden calf.

  102. Wilco says:

President Bush is ok, too. But President Assclown is not.

  103. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Doesn’t sound much like BushCo or its minions.

  104. RUCerious says:

Wilco – Does that mean that Mr Presidunce is not OK?
    or Mr. Dumbf*ckingJackassPrezidunce?

  105. Wilco says:

How about Mr. President Bush Ass?

    Yes. Definitely.

  106. Gregor Samsa says:

But he did capitalize George Bush.
    Comment by dlet — October 23, 2006 @ 1:40 pm

You noticed that too, didn’t you? I missed to mention it.

As for your Golden Calf comment, that’s been my opinion for the last couple of years or so. The Bush apologists have morphed into something far more dangerous: They are a cult-like following now. And as such, there is no swaying them with facts or evidence.

I never thought I’d live long enough to see such a social transformation in the US, from a representative secular democracy with accountability to a authoritarian leadership claiming divine guidance. We live in interesting times, indeed.

  107. Wilco says:

RUCerious, I’d say the first one is fine because I really don’t think he’d notice.

  108. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I retract part of my comment to Daryll. I misunderstood what I was reading earlier, and I now see that you meant something else when you wrote “Hate 9:17″. I understand what I did wrong. Sorry about that.

But he’s still not my savior, so don’t call him “our”.

  109. Wilco says:

Or maybe there is a Book of Hate in his bible. Think outside of the box, man.

  110. Daryll says:

The coming of the Lord is nye? Are you ready, huh dems?

  111. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Daryl

I prefer sourdough, rather than rye. And make it a Reisling, instead of Concord.

And, most importantly, don’t let any self-righteous, neocon-spouting Christian Pharisee touch it first!

The coming of the Lord is nye? Are you ready, huh dems?

    Comment by Daryll

Lord of the Dance is coming back? Got my tappy shoes ready. Thanks for the heads up Daryll.

  113. Briseadh na Faire says:

Daryll, I hate to break this to you, but the bible is a work of fiction, written by men who were seeking power by invoking God. Buddah was a man, Jesus was a man, Mohammad was a man.

Jesus may have been more spiritual than most, but his message has been perverted over the years by people seeking to have power and exert control over others such as yourself.

How, you might ask, do I know this? The answer is simple. I talked to him. He’s a nice guy, but kind of sad that so many thousands and thousands of people have been killed by others claiming to follow his teachings.

  114. TerrytheTurtle says:

The coming of the Lord is nye?

He’s Bill Nye? The science guy? Well I never saw that coming.. I must admit.

  115. Briseadh+na+Faire says:

111 – then there’s a nice chianti, with fava beans. sorry, that’s bad.

but then Christians re-create the last great human sacrifice, symbolically eating his flesh and drinking his blood in weekly ritualistic fashion.

Daryll – the word is “nigh,” not “nye.”

  116. Jesus Christ says:

There you are BNF. You left your coat last time you stopped by. And I thought you were going to take some of those puff pastries of mine home with you. Perhaps you were being a bit polite with me when you said you liked them so much. That’s ok, I understand. People are always misquoting me too. Texas Hold ‘Em next time eh?

  117. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    114 TerrytheTurtle

    Now THAT is funny.

Oh, the cognitive dissonance for BushCo – believe in the second coming AND believe in a science supporter!

  118. Daryll says:

    Briseadh na Faire, blasphemy!!!!

  119. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Daryll, hypocrisy!!!!!

  120. Daryll says:

dlet, bring your tap shoes and sarcasm and prepare your behind for heat 10 times the actual temperature of lava. Don’t take my words lightly about his coming. Don’t let it be too late because there won’t be any excuses.

  121. Wilco says:

Daryll, which part? Are you suggesting Jesus doesn’t like fava beans?

  122. Briseadh+na+Faire says:

119 – Daryll, and what is it when Bush says he consults a higher father?

  123. dlet says:

dlet, bring your tap shoes and sarcasm and prepare your behind for heat 10 times the actual temperature of lava. Don’t take my words lightly about his coming. Don’t let it be too late because there won’t be any excuses.

    Comment by Daryll

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I heard all of this in my past life. See we are all reincarnated. Prove me wrong…also the millions that believe this. Just as believable as the nebulous heaven place where we all live for eternity in peace. I guess when you live in your own little hell you have to look forward to something.

  127. Bluedog49 says:

    Daryll: “blasphemy!!!!”

You’re a real hoot, Daryll. Here’s a couple lines from Frank Zappa for you:

Those unbelievers from the neighboring state.

Not that I’d wish an imminent tranformation, mind you, but wouldn’t an American Bald Eagle flying over Washington or Crawford, TX and dropping a load right on top of Bush just be a form of heaven?

  129. dlet says:

    TerrytheTurtle,
You type really well for a reptile. I was thinking of going for some kind of bird next. I have a long list of names with “turd bomb” written next to them.

  130. dlet says:

Ah, PLC you pre-empted my funny.

  131. TerrytheTurtle says:

Hey where did St Darryl go? Watch out, don’t answer that door bell, last time they were over I had to drop on the ground and speak in tongues before they gave up.

What do you think of Costa Rica?

  134. TerrytheTurtle says:

Zooey, I was very young. woke up with sand in my mouth, legged it a couple of hundred yards into the sea across a beach bombarded by diving birds. Most of my homies were eaten alive. Me, I was lucky. Now that I’m all grown up I’m thinking of a beach condo. I don’t hold a grudge.
