Cohen Warns Conservatives Using ‘Purely Overt Racist Approach’ To Attack Rep. Ford

A new right-wing ad targeting African-American Rep. Harold Ford (D-TN), who is running for Senate in Tennessee, features “a scantily clad white woman winking and inviting [Ford] to ‘call me.’” The woman “speaks in a hushed, suggestive tone and says that she met Ford at ‘the Playboy party.’”

Yesterday on CNN, former Republican senator and Defense Secretary William Cohen called the ad a “very serious appeal to a racist sentiment” and said it reminded him “of what happened in North Carolina with Harvey Gantt, a purely overt racist approach.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/10/cohen.320.240.flv]

Some history on Harvey Gantt:

In 1990, locked in a tight race with an African American Democrat, former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, [Sen. Jesse] Helms aired a final-week TV ad that showed a pair of white hands crumpling a rejection letter, while an announcer said, “You needed that job and you were the best qualified. But they had to give it to a minority because of a racial quota.”

Digg It!

Full transcript:

COHEN: I think the Republicans have to be careful, also, in terms of not engaging in conduct. And I was watching the — the Tennessee race, specifically. It reminded me of what happened in North Carolina with Harvey Gantt, a purely overt racist approach.

BLITZER: You are talking about the new RNC ad which has this white woman talking about Playboy and the — the African-American candidate, Harold Ford Jr., the Democratic candidate.

(CROSSTALK)

COHEN: It’s — to me, at least as I watch that, is a very serious appeal to a racist sentiment.

And when the question is always asked, why — he would be the first African-American since Reconstruction elected to the Senate, you say, well, why is that the case? So, why is the South different? Why would they not elect someone…

BLITZER: So, you’re a former Republican senator. Is the RNC playing the racial card against Harold Ford in Tennessee right now?

COHEN: I think they are coming very close to it, if not doing it exactly. And I think they ought to stop it. I think that they have a candidate, and discuss the — the issues on the merits, and not get into that kind of personal type of an attack.

Their republicans what do you expect from these people. That’s why I find it funny that Ken Melhman is going around to all the african american churches trying to get them to vote for republicans.

George Bush and the majority of the Republican party doesn’t care about minorities or the poor. This is obvious to anyone who looks at their policies.

This is disgusting yet typical of racist Republican scumbag tactics.

  4. BigCynic.com says:

The only way to discourage this kind of sleazy Republican racist campaigning is to out the bastards. Attack ads like this need as much national coverage as possible. With enough outrage and buzz among progressives on the Net, who knows–the mainstream media might even pick it up.

As it stands now, however, the scumbags are getting away with it–just like Bush did in 2000 with his racist attacks on McCain’s adopted Bangladeshi daughter.

Bushian loyalty is no virtue–it’s the loyalty of thieves

Did I miss something or did he leave out some words? Did he forget to say the words “from the South” or something? Does Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) not count? (I did not watch the video.)

  11. Will says:

You know…. While I don’t specifically remember a pro-democratic ad that was racist, I find it hard to be outraged more by the reps than the dems. They’re both guilty of smear tactics. It’s standard election tactics these days. The reps have historically been a little better (ie more sleazy) than the dems. The next time anyone has a notion to say “I’ve had it with the Republicans. I’m voting Democrat.” Just imagine the choice between hitting yourself with a 2 pound hammer or a 1 pound hammer. Then do yourself a favor and image you put BOTH of them down and stop hitting yourself.

  12. Think+Half+Ass+Progress says:

Oh well. Ford voted in favor of the Military Commissions Act. When he loses I hope he feels like crap.

  13. Happy+Guy says:

Put Senator KKK Bryd on the job. He knows how to spot racist.

The Republicans do have a better track record. More high placed African-Americans than the DummyRats ever did. The DummyRats promise handouts for votes but don’t actually do anything to help. That is why every year more African-Americans vote Republican.

Demographically Republicans are better off financially and better educated than DummyRats (like it or not it is true). So as more and more African-Americans move up socially, buy homes, own things, hold good jobs and get better education they wake up and realize they have been being used all these years.

The Republican party has become the party of inclusion.

  18. Marie says:

Everyone see that ad? Not only is it irrelevant, it is a disgusting and total smear done just for the sake of smearing – no basis, just a vicious means toward accomplishing the end.
Cohen may denounce it, but Republicans with a sense of integrity are few and far between these days.

  19. marcus+robinson says:

    Happy+Guy,

It’s not the upward mobility that wil make african american vote for republicans idiot. They NEVER will vote for republicans in the numbers they want. Afircan american see the racist under-tone in this ad and say to themselves, “there they go again, a black man craving a white women. Nothing makes a white man crazier than the thought of a black man with a hite woman.” This will appeal to the racist and they will come out and vote against Ford base on this issue. Wake up, the republicans have you brainwashed.

  23. Democrat Soldier says:

#14 – “The Republican party has become the party of inclusion.”

Well, the Republicans include teen-age obsesed closet case 50 year olds, and more sexual perverts than any other political party in the world.

They include people who are the the far-right, and the even-further-right. They include people who ignore Pres. Bush’s failures and those who ignroe the reality of his failures.
They include fiscally irresponsible conservatives, and fiscally inept conservatives.
They include those who fight for special interests over the average American, and those who own special interests over the average American.
They include those who love big-government and those who want more big-government.

Yeah, I guess Republicans include a lot of people!

You might fool yourself, but you don’t fool anyone with a working mind. The Republicans are the party of “shut up and follow the party line or we’ll kick you out!”.

Democrats are much more broad-minded (no puns about Pres. Clinton!) and include many more diverse perspectives than Republicans will ever consider. That’s why the Democrats have a difficult time getting their message out, because it’s a message of inclusion.

Democrats what to know what your ideas are.
Republicans tell you what ideas to have.

    BIG difference.

  24. Matt+Bors says:

While it is a stupid attack ad, I hardly see how it is racist. Most Playboy bunnies are in fact white, so if you were going to portray one to smear Ford for his partying at the Playboy mansion, then the lady would most likely be white.

  25. tom+baker says:

They’ll keep doing it because it works. Republican voters are all racists, they’re just too cowardly to admit it – they just like to hint and wink about it at election time…

  26. Jay Randal says:

Karl Rove has decided that the GOP cannot cheat enough to hold onto the House of Representatives, so instead Rove is focusing all the money, dirty attacks, and vote fraud to keep control of the Senate! Rep. Harold Ford is being targeted to prevent him from winning the Senate seat in Tennessee! Rove’s plan is to cap the Democrats at picking up 3 to 4 Senate seats max, which would mean failure to control the Senate, because pick of 7 seats is needed! Rove only has to rig the Diebold machines for GOP Senators, and not for the House seats which are hopeless! Plus by this plan everything Pelosi does in the House will be countered by the GOP controlled Senate and BUsh can veto stuff too!

  27. Democrat Soldier says:

#28 – “But since when do CRAZY CHRISTIANS need POLLS, when 16 year old POLES satisfy them!!”

Ooooh! That was a low blow! (No pun intended!)

    True, but low.

By the way, who will republicans blame for losing seats in the Senate, the House, and among Govorners? They sure won’t take responsibility for their failure, so who will they blame?

Fmr. Pres. Clinton? Naww, too obvious and over-blamed for every failure of Pres. Bush.
The voters? Naww, it might tick off their “base” for the next election.
Usama bin Laden? Naww, they gotta keep him around for 2008 to try and keep the White House.

I think the Republicans will blame Canada for lsoing seats come November 8th. My second guess will be Diebold, for not stealing enough votes.

No, nothing racist about having some blonde White woman asking Playboy Harold Ford to call her at the end of that commercial.

Are you an idiot? The woman was not Asian, Black, or Hispanic, was she?

And what the hell does this have to do with Iraq? The deficit? Immigration?

I hope the GOP is completely wiped out in 2 weeks.

  33. marcus+robinson says:

    Matt+Bors,

Why not just say Ford was hanging out at the Playboy club like a lot of famous people have?? Because it doesn’t paint the picture of a black man with a white woman. But if you show some half dressed white woman giving a wink and saying “Harold give me a call” it means Harold Ford was there having sex or doing something of a sexual nature with a white woman. That drive you white southern guys crazy. It like the push poll that Rove did on McCain in South Carolina in 2000 when he asked the question, would you be least likely or likely to vote for McCain if you knew he fathered a black child?. RACIST!!

  34. Bluedog49 says:

It only took 14 posts for some jackass named “Happy Guy” to bring up the KKK and Byrd. Byrd quit the group and apologized publically more than 40 years ago, but that’s all Happy Guy’s got to defend the institutional racism of today’s repub party. Just frickin pathetic!

The question for today is Happy guy, do you approve of the racist anti-Harold Ford ads and if you do, why do you? Stop bullshitting!

  35. Bluedog49 says:

“The Fool” doesn’t see any racism. Perfect name.

  36. WC says:

Corker has denounced the ad as tacky and has called on the local TV stations in TN to quit running the ad. He said that while he legally can’t communicate with the RNC about the ad (they paid for it), he can talk to the media about it.

Spokesmen from 2 of our local stations said they are going to continue running the ad until the RNC tells them to stop. The RNC reportedly has no plans to do this.

But let 100 “christians” out of a viewership of several hundred thousand call the local NBC affiliate and demand that “The Book of Daniel” be pulled from the air, and watch how quickly the station acts.

  37. Grey+Eagle says:

The Ford campaign should start running footage of Corker saying “I never said stay the course,” in his last debate right before footage of Corker saying just last month “we’ve got to stay the course.” Corker is a racist moron. Do the voters of Tennessee have any self-respect at all?

  39. WC says:

The ad, IMO, at the very least shows how desperate the RNC is and shows that Ford is a credible threat to Corker. Heaven forbid that the local stations do the right thing and pull the ad on moral grounds. I guess the money the RNC paid them is just too darn appealing. That, and a threat of a lawsuit.

  40. Democrat Soldier says:

#38 – Happy+Guy also likes to conveniently forget that Fmr. Sen. Thurmond NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR HIS RACISM! Not even once!

Happy+Guy also likes to conveniently ingore that the racist Dixiecrats left the Democratic Party to join the Republicans in droves when the Democrats fought FOR civil rights!

Happy+Guy doesn’t want to talk about the NAACP giving Sen. Byrd a 100% civil rights rating. I’ll bet he can’t remember what rating the NAACP gave Fmr. Sen. Thurmond!

Happy+Guy is incredibly good at drinking the kool-aide and repeating party-lines, but never engaging his brain to think about the issues. I wonder why? Is he afraid he might become a Democrat if he uses his brain for something other than keeping his head from caving in?!?

Corker isn’t running the ad. The RNC is. In fact, as I previously posted, Corker has denounced the ad.

As for Corker’s “stay the course” statements, Ford has been running clips of them and then saying we don’t need to stay the course.

My bad. I apologize if I wasn’t clear. My point was is that White men have difficulty seeing anything as racist because they will never know what it’s like to be discriminated against or oppressed soley based on the color of their skin.

Again, had this been an ad featuring a Playboy bunny who was a minority, the impact wouldn’t be the same, especially in the South. It’s the the RNC way of saying to socially conservative Southerners, “Don’t vote for Ford. He wants your White women.”

I guess that’s why a downtown newsstand in my very red Northeast TN city — a newstand that is quite popular with the public and is what the locals consider an historic landmark and a city treasure — sells Playboy, Penthouse, and other “girlie” magazines behind the counter yet in plain sight of anyone walking in, and no one has yet demanded that they close down. The place is quite popular with the locals, especially at lunchtime as they sell some darned good hotdogs and popcorn. Plus the kids can get a Slurpee and peruse the comic book section.

I guess I also support the hedonistic lifestyle celebrated at the Playboy mansion simply because I purchased one of their magazines several years ago, eh.

How many parties did Ford attend? One? Other than a cute blonde telling Ford to call her in an RNC ad, what other proof do you have that supports your accusation that Ford celebrates the “hedonistic lifestyle”???

  53. Happy+Guy says:

As for KKK Byrd of course the NAACP gave him a pass. He is a DummyRat. If he was a Republican you would not care how much time had passed or what he did to reform. You would want to run him out of office or worse. That is the double-standard of you party you refuse to address.

Oh wow. The Republicans got 2% more African American voters in the last election, bringing down the democrat support to 88%. The article you cited was what people THOUGHT was going to happen. It didn’t have any statistics in it about what DID happen. The reps hoped to get 10-15% extra in the last election, so they failed miserably. I don’t think 2% counts as a mass exodus from the dems. It makes your statement sound pretty silly. Got anything else?

It is good to know that not all Republicans view winning at any cost good as good for America. It very much is not good for America. Shame on the RNC. Shame on Ken Melman and Karl Rove. How would Ken Melman like it if folks went around calling him gay?

  63. bobby says:

call bob corker at his cell phone and tell him what you think…

    1-423-240-2806 1 423 240 2806…its his cell phone…he;’d
love to hear what we all thought about him………….

  64. AngryOne says:

The Amazing Race Card is all the GOP has left in 2006…

  65. verse18 says:

Gantt, Willie Horton, another racist ad. And this is news? Shit, it’d be news if such an ad didn’t run. And Cohen- if he can’t see that his beloved party has in fact already played that race card, he’s a moron. But, of course, he’s simply being an ass.

Now if Ford, himself, wasn’t such a craven, pandering schmuck, I might actually care. You don’t think the knuckledraggers in Tenn. can’t size up this race? A moderate Repugnacan pretending to be a Democrat running against one of their own, a real idiot Repugnacan. Duh. For me, I hope Cork cleans his clock.

I live in Tennessee and I’m with you about Ford. He’s a DINO of the highest order. They way he votes with conservatives makes me sick. But I definitely don’t want Corker to win.

Ford may vote with the Republicans 7 out of 10 times, but that’ s 3 times less than Corker would.

I think you have nailed it. This is a racist ad without actually saying so. It is pandering to the southern redneck, who is alive and well, but disinclined to be as outspoken on his bigotry as he once was.

  67. big+papa says:

Ford will NEVER win in TENNESSEE…

…especially after the REPULSIVESCUM placed that ad…

…with the blonde whispering suggestively for Ford to, “call me”…

…that’ll bring put the al Cracker base in droves…

    …in defense of white womanhood…

    …against the Black ape (Ford)…

…America ain’t changed….sh***T if anything (with the REPULSIVESCUM inbreds in power)…

    … it’s gotten worse….

    Ain’t no nation like miscegenation!

Everybody: Go out tonight and find a member of another ethnicity and f**k his/her brains out.

  69. pgl says:

I could actually vote Republican if they got rid of racist liars like Lizzie Dole and put grownups like William Cohen in charge.

  70. pgl says:

RuCerious – interesting comment. The gal is neither from Tennessee nor cute. Hey, I lived in Tennessee and trailer trash like that got shipped off to the hills or better – to some other state.

  71. Steve says:

No wonder 10% of the black vote is considered a victory for Republicans. Expect it to go dcwn next time.

  72. Bluedog49 says:

I think “Happy guy” has blown a gasket. It must be hard being a Bush cultists these days. The cognitive dissonance could make your head explode — assuming you’ve got some brains in there.

  73. 'sconset says:

When I read comments like “happy guy” and a few of the other simpletons that are so enamored of the Republican party it makes me sad. They are terribly limited people and they have little or no intellect. That ad is a very subtle form of racism. Personally, I think the ad is of poor quality and if I were Ken (the closet queen) Mehlmann I would not be racing around defending it.l

Bill Cohen is absolutely right–his wife happens to be stunning and she is BLACK!!!

So to “happy crappy” and the other trolls, why don’t you go over to your pal Matt Drudges site or do something constructive for a change/

  74. Mimi Schaeffer says:

Are there really any playboy bunnies “partying” on?!? I mean, other than at Heffner’s mansion?

I thought they closed all those clubs during the 70s.

  75. markie says:

give me an half an hour with ropes tied to the bed posts and I will have Corker screaming, “I’m Gay. I’m Gay”.

  76. Edward says:

I was at the Playboy party with Ford and others. There wasn’t a single naked black woman present, so the ad is accurate, if a bit tasteless.

  77. KenMelmanIsGay says:

geez, trying to play teacher and correct trolling posts, I inadvertently typed KNOW instead of NOW in #53
Kinda makes my point mute….ah well, you’re still a troll there BWS

    Comment by DRxJ

I take it you’re from Tennessee and home-schooled? The term is “moot” not “mute.” With this ad, the South has proven its unworthiness for self-governance. After the Civil War, we should have just occupied it like the West Bank. We could use it for a dump for our “nook-yoo-lar” waste.
