Television cameras unexpectedly caught House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) entering the ethics committee meeting to testify about the Mark Foley page scandal. It was not previously known that Hastert would be testifying. ABC reported yesterday that the “investigation of how the Republican leadership handled the issue has provoked turmoil and finger-pointing in Hastert’s office.”

UPDATE: The AP has more.
Hastert’s mad cuz he couldn’t bring that turkey leg in with him. They said they wanted to hear his answers, instead of sloppy chewing and smacking.
October 24th, 2006 at 1:49 pmI hope they lock that FAT PIG up..
As well as ANYONE regargless of Party, religion, sex, age.
October 24th, 2006 at 1:50 pmI wonder if he prepped by watching re-runs of Hogan’s Heroes.
October 24th, 2006 at 1:50 pmTaking the Sgt Schultz defense!
Awkward! How very awkward!
October 24th, 2006 at 1:53 pmLame! How very lame!
October 24th, 2006 at 1:59 pmThey’d better be careful when pointing fingers. Hastert may not have had lunch yet. New meaning to the word “finger food”…
October 24th, 2006 at 2:01 pmwhy would anyone think he should NOT testify?…
October 24th, 2006 at 2:07 pmIt’s closed door hearings, so will we ever know what fat Denny Hastert said?
October 24th, 2006 at 2:08 pmEh, if he doesn’t like a line of questioning, he’ll just dissolve the committee. The Rethugs have no shame and no accountibility.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:11 pmAmerica’s Least Wanted
This is the same Neoslut who removed Hefley from the ethics
October 24th, 2006 at 2:14 pmcommittee for not kow towing to DeLay. Hefley & Hasturd
entered congress together, & were friends.
Just goes to show the carnage that was Tom DeLay.
Hasturd better plan on joining Tom on K St…he’s covered up the
Foley activities & is now lying to save his very large ass.
Hey Tom, how’s Sara Evans doing on ‘Dancing with the Stars’?
How are you doing kissing ass on K St.? Oh, by the way, Tom,
Jack’s got his own desk now at the FBI! Shouldn’t be too long
before you’re brought in for some coffee & questions.
These things tend to get a little frustrating for people who are not used to being lawyerly scritinized on their choice of words. Clinton got heated, Scooter sputtered.
Hastert may well hit his own four-digit personal blood pressure record.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:14 pmAny bets that the testimony Hastert gives under oath conflicts either with other sworn testimony given this committee, or his own public statements? What’s the likelihood that he’ll “confess” and admit that he knew what Foley was doing all along and tried to keep it quiet in order to protect a “safe” Republican seat? Finally, what’s the likelihood that nothing at all comes out of this entire Ethics investigation?
October 24th, 2006 at 2:15 pmHa! Ha!
You suck, Fattie McHastert.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:18 pmIt’s too bad that the public can’t vote to oust Hastert – only people in his district in Illinois can get rid of fat boy.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:20 pmUntil recently, he was in no danger of losing his seat, now John Laesch, Iraq vet in military intelligence, union carpenter, young, fresh, smart and hopeful just might tip Hastert over. Laesch had very little support from the party until recently, indicating the solid base for Hastert – things are changing, but is there enough time to change people’s minds?
Hastert made a personal fortune while in congress with sweetheart land deals; pork barrel funding for his personal pet projects. He needs to return to the farm where he can slop with the hogs.
Dennis Hastert: Thank you for not resigning yet! You have helped Democrats more than any advertisement could have!
October 24th, 2006 at 2:20 pmThese hearings should be re-held. After Nov. 7.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:22 pmLet us hope that all this leads to a more democratic Congress. A Congress that will look within and beyond our borders at the issue of global poverty. The Borgen Project states that every 3.6 seconds another human being dies of starvation. It is time we had a Congress that will champion the UN Millennium Development Goals and lead the movement against extreme poverty worlwide.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:34 pmAwkward! How very awkward!

Does it feel awkward that you voted for such a destructive and incompetent administration, who is now cutting and running?
October 24th, 2006 at 2:48 pm#16 No time. We’ve got bigger fish to fry for our Christmas Feast.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:50 pmFrom all I have heard about this Foley fiasco I would suspect that fingers aren’t the only things that have been pointed.

October 24th, 2006 at 2:50 pmWonder how FOX will spin this one tonight?
Hastert refusing to resign will KO the Neocons in 2 weeks! Can’t wait for the cleaning to begin!
October 24th, 2006 at 2:56 pm#21 Cleanupthehouse,
Only if everyone gets out there and votes!
October 24th, 2006 at 3:04 pmIt has to be a bigger margin than Diebold can turn around.
Good luck to us in November.
#22 I don’t think that will happen TB. The truth is that while people on here are passionate about their politics their base is lazy. Just like the preceeding elections they are likely to have an excuse for not voting. That cannot be said about conservatives. They will come out in droves and these polls can be used as toliet paper as liberals and progressives shit their pants on Nov 8th.
October 24th, 2006 at 3:12 pmI wonder if Boehner and the rest have thrown Denny under the bus again at these hearings. I also wonder if the bus is o.k.
October 24th, 2006 at 3:16 pmI think Denny’s got that sinking feeling…
October 24th, 2006 at 3:35 pmDrop your drawes mr.hasbeen, one of the pages said something about a mole…..
October 24th, 2006 at 3:49 pmWhat crime has been committed?
October 24th, 2006 at 4:16 pmWhat Crime was committed?
October 24th, 2006 at 4:17 pmYou can conduct yourself in an unethical way and still not commit a crime, doesn’t mean its ok numb nuts. Obviously you don’t give a crap about accountability from our public officials.
October 24th, 2006 at 4:56 pmHastert’s smash hits “Ongoing Investigation” and “Democrats and Soros” are #2 and #3 on the Top 10 GOP Sound Bites List.
October 24th, 2006 at 5:23 pmBen, I think you underestimate just how angry the majority of Americans are at this administration and its House and Senate Republican enablers. Angry people VOTE. And haven’t you been hearing a lot of the political pundits talking about the possibility of a low Republican voter turnout this time, because many Republicans just don’t want to vote their rep back in? Regardless of the veracity of that idea, I’m positive that every registered voter on every liberal/progressive website is counting the days until we can vote the whole greedy, unethical lot of them out!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:35 pmHastert is finding it necessary to run political ads in Illinois. I saw them several times today. I guess he believes that he just might be overtaken by the smart, eager Iraq vet running against him despite having gotten no help and little news coverage.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:53 pmI live in Hastert country, and his fans are legion.
To sociopaths like Dave, no harm has been done if no crime has technically been committed. I know the parents of teenagers working in the page program will appreciate your position, Dave.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:42 pmWould it be safe to assume Hastert was under oath?
October 24th, 2006 at 8:19 pm#33 I live in Hastert country, and his fans are legion.
There’s the problem in a nutshell…..the dumb constituents would keep re-electing this loser regardless of his record. “he’s our guy…coutry be damned”! That’s the prevailing attitude.
October 25th, 2006 at 5:49 amWould it be safe to assume Hastert was under oath?
Comment by Zooey
No, Zooey, it would not. Given the Republicans’ obvious disdain for making people put their balls on the line (which is how we get the word “testify, by the way), it would not surprise me one bit to learn that Hastert sat there not under oath, with his feet up on the table, shooting the breeze with his good buddy Doc Hastings.
Hastert: “I don’t know why they’re all telling you I lied, Doc. Maybe they’re just jealous of all the women I get, especially those hot young female pages. Anyway, where were we? Oh, yeah, Foley. No, nobody said a word to me about anyone preying on our pages.”
Hastings: “Thank you Mr. Speaker. That will be all. Lunch later?”
No, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
