Rumsfeld Agrees Bush Is ‘Not Backing Away From Staying The Course’»

Faced with widespread disappoval of its Iraq policy, the Bush administration launched a coordinated effort this week to convince Americans it has never had a stay-the-course strategy in Iraq. On Sunday, President Bush said, “We’ve never been stay the course.” White House Counselor Dan Bartlett disavowed the label again yesterday.

But in a radio interview today with Sean Hannity, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld confirmed that the Bush administration isn’t planning to shift its strategy. Rumsfeld called media reports about Bush’s reversal “nonsense,” and said “of course” Bush is “not backing away from staying the course.”

Digg It!

Full transcript:

HANNITY: A lot of debate has no emerged over the phrase “stay the course,” and what that actually means. “Well, the President is backing away from staying the course.”

RUMSFELD: Aww, that’s nonsense.

HANNITY: He’s not backing away from staying the course?

RUMSFELD: Of course not. The concern was that it gave opponents the chance to say, “Well, he’s not willing to make adjustments,” and of course, just the opposite is true.

Now wait a minute. Didn’t an administration spokesperson just yesterday say they never said stay the course and now Rummy said “of course” Bush is “not backing away from ’stay the course.’”
    My head hurts.

    Where’s my lyingbastardometer?

  3. Erroll Says:

Someone is obviously not with the program. The administration has to make up its mind. Which slogan is it to be- stay the course or Stay and Die?

Tell Main Street USA one thing on the MSM and then get on a partisan talk show to tell your base that you really don’t mean it. This administration is so full of it .

  10. Uncle_Ho Says:

    Notice the similarity here.

Hitler: Where the German soldier sets his foot, there he remains. Victory or death.

Bush: I will not pull our troops out of Iraq even if Laura and Barney are the only ones supporting me. Stay the course.

This is the first truth Rummy as spoken and he probably doesn’t even realize it.

  15. WC Says:

Ah yes, but Bush’s 35% or so supporters will follow Rummy’s lead and blame the media. In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what Bush & Co. were after.

  16. Uncle_Ho Says:

Does this mean Bush is a “cut and run coward” or not?

  18. Marie Says:

Didn’t he get the message of this week?
Bush has contradicted himself so many times, flip-flopped so many times Rove can’t keep the troops in line.
Even the press secretary can’t keep the talking points straight, so what do you expect from a senile old man?

  19. Innocent Bystander Says:

So would this be considered a flip-flop-flip? Or a flop-flip-flop? Hard to tell with this misadministration. Guess they are having a problem keeping Rummy on the message. Where is that vaunted message discipline? I guess it’s pretty damn difficult to project a consistant position when no amount of messaging can cover up the incompentent mess that these deluded criminals have created.

  20. RUCerious Says:

Uncle Ho - Bush may be a drawoc - a coward who runs backward. But he was not for cutting and running before he wasn’t for staying the course.

  21. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

The entire US media is saying today that the administation is changing its “stay the course” lingo even though the administration said that it never used “stay the course,” but now the administration is saying that they did say “stay the course” and they are not backing away from “stay the course” even as they change from “stay the course.” It’s really very simple.

Stephanopoulos asked about James Baker’s plan to develop a strategy for Iraq that is “between ’stay the course’ and ‘cut and run.’”

Bush responded, ‘We’ve never been stay the course, George!’

I guess in a sense Rummy’s right, bush isn’t backing away from it, he’s denying it completely…….

  28. Innocent+Bystander Says:

Anyone wonder why the war is complete disaster? Can you imagine the generals trying to devine who is speaking with authority in this administration? I wonder if Bush has found Iraq yet on the Google?

  40. P O'Neill Says:

When also being interviewed by Hannity, Cheney was more careful

Q Iraq obviously is the most controversial issue of the administration. The big, I guess, debate that’s going on now is over the phrase or the term — the President has used it in the past — “stay the course.” Now people say, well, we seem to be changing that phrase. What specifically is the administration’s position on that phrase, and what does that mean now?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, the way I think about it, Sean, is what our objective is obviously. And it’s to — in Iraq to get the situation stabilized with good government, self government, for the Iraqis, with adequate Iraqi security forces to deal with the security threat. That’s where we’re headed. That’s what it takes to complete the mission.

The process for getting there is to get the Iraqis actively involved in this process, to train and equip a 325,000-man force that’s capable of providing that security. So I think about it in terms of completing the mission.

Now, strategy has stayed the same pretty much all the way down the road. That is giving the Iraqis a position where they could deal with their own affairs. We change tactics from time to time. We move forces around different areas. Sometimes we’ve had to beef up our forces in order to deal with anticipated violence when there were national elections. We recently moved troops into Baghdad to help deal with the Baghdad security threat. So we are flexible in terms of how we adapt and adjust to individual circumstances. That’s the way I think about it.

I just hope we keep moving toward it and don’t take that ‘detour’ that puts you in the middle of some dank monster-laden nightmare (sorry for the amusement park analogy, I’m planning a trip to Six Flags for the students in my class. Physics can be so much fun :)

  43. Yikes Says:

42 by P O’Neill, so Cheney actually tries to define the ‘course’ as getting Iraq into a stable government and then says the ’strategy’ hasn’t changed but the ‘tactic’ do change. The FACT is whatever the ‘course’ is or ’strategy’ is or ‘tactics’ are THEY HAVE ALL FAILED.

  44. Quadrajet Says:

#44 - all is well down here UB, just laughing as I watch the commercial for DeLay’s replacement trying to explain to the knuckle draggin’ republicans in that district how to ’spin the wheel’ and spell out her name - too bad they couldn’t find a candidate named ‘X’, they may have had a shot! You’re right, it’s nice to at least have the possibility of a light at the end of the tunnel, can’t wait for the 7th. Still concerned about what a desperate GOP might try to pull off though.

If Rove hasn’t managed to contain the embarassing Bush-Rumsfeld contradictions, I’m wondering if his magical powers have finally been exposed as nothing more than a man behind the curtain, and this is all there is left… Humiliating defeat? I don’t know if it’s a shift in the pedulum swing, or merely wishful thinking… But we sure do have a chance to save our country here. I hope we take it.

  97. Mike Corbeil Says:

Tony Snow was quoted in at least some articles of yesterday if not the day before and saying that Bush never said that the Bush administration was going to stay the course.

From what I recall, Bush himself was directly quoted saying the same thing, or else that they’re not saying this any longer; as opposed to leftists having put these words into Bush’s mouth without him having ever said them. So, iow, Bush, as far as I’m aware, indeed said this.

Now Rumsfeld, Dick Arney, and Tony Snow are being reported saying that of course Bush had said that they were staying the course. In the case of the Dick Arney article, it appears that staying the course is now being treated as not necessarily with respect to the Iraq War, but, instead, the GWOT in general. However, simple but clear common sense tells anyone who’s been paying very careful attention that the Iraq War is a main component of the GWOT and a rather, according to the Bush administration’s agenda, and, of course, therefore, PNAC; well, the Iraq War is a necessary component or part. So, whether they try to divert attention by pretending that staying the course was only meant with respect to the GWOT, not necessarily the Iraq War, we nevertheless know that the latter definitely is part of the staying the course agenda.

  101. jake3988 Says:

They are? They aren’t? They are? They aren’t?

This administration is just a bloody joke.

  102. JAS Says:

Okay, so the republicans are cracking. But the fact remains that American kids are dying (as are Iraqi civilians, including innocent children), so it’s time to stop smirking and act like adults. This piling on about what a bunch of dopes the administation is is really pathetic.

We either increase forces to suppress the violence, convince ourselves we can withdraw with honor, or bleed ourselves to death with the present course. It is a really sad time for the United States, whether you are liberal, conservative, dove or hawk. The gloating on this page is inappropriate, and sad.

  105. MattG Says:

Just to add to my earlier comment (#107) spinning and not being honest is why your sites lose another semi moderate -who are sick of lies and spin. (I Don’t feel need to check the site again and yeah I know … you won’t miss me much.)

But in whole makes your site obsolete. (Just incase, you want to prove me wrong -the concept was to make it as if Rumsfeld said “not backing away from staying the course”, which he didn’t say.) good luck

  106. Canuckistanian Says:

Mr. Rumsfeld? Please stay with the tour.

  107. Pi Higher Says:

Once again, the liberal media has misunderestimted our president. He never said “Stay the Course.” He said “Stay the Coors” and from the look and sound of things, that’s exactly what he has been doing.

  108. Bob Says:

  112. come+on Says:

semantics semantics semantics. if you take everything literally, you wind up believing the world was made in 6 days (no offense, mr. prez). However imagine the phrase: while others want to cut and run, we stay the course

of course, what the speaker is implying is that the alternative to one label “cut and run”, is the other laber “stay the course”, here meaning stay in Iraq and finish the mission (whatever it may be).

However, is you apply the phrase “stay the course” literally, this implies an unwillingness to bend. As public discourse has altered the implication of the STC reference, our sub-Mensa president merely backed away from the phrase, while his smater, but misguided, co-workers went about elucidating the situation.

We are merely in a redifinition of the term, and it is more important to educate people about the actual issues of substance, like [ ]. Let it be, as arguing about it makes the cause seem petty.

i hope that made any kind of sense

  113. Henry Says:

Here’s how it works. The Republicans are “staying the course” even though they’ve never been about “staying the course”. The first “staying the course” refers to the way they conduct their affairs (you know, the corruption, links with K street, mismanagement of the war on terrorism, the lies, that sort of thing). That will not change. The second “staying the course” refers to their talking points and slogans. Those will change and America votes for whoever has the best talking points and slogans (the true forte of the Republicans). I predict the Republicans will win with their not staying the course regarding the old slogan of staying the course and coming up with some fresh and better slogans.

    God Bless America.

  114. RandyBastard Says:

He’s TRYING to get fired. Bush just won’t let him out of that contract.

  115. Robot Warrior Says:

Rumsfeld: Originally, ‘Stay the course’ was a white house dinner table expression, ‘like pass the potatoes please’.

  116. sparafucilli Says:

Time to switch PR firms. See, this is what happens when you don’t take the time to focus group things beforehand. Where’s Rove when you need him?

  117. ernesto Says:

very funny — likens bush’s we were never stay the course to bewitched-style magic… links of ’stay the course’ articles from 2003 right after the invasion right through a couple of weeks ago…

  118. greg Says:

Wow, they’re actually forgetting their talking points. Rove must be in panic mode. He’ll try to launch a massive hail mary desperation negative ad campaign soon.

Hopefully the rest of the country will see right through their sheer desperation.

  119. LiberalRebel Says:

But now my Country’s become a laughing stock,

I am sad to say this, but it has been that for wquite a while I’m afraid.

  120. LiberalRebel Says:

But now my Country’s become a laughing stock,
    And the Gop’s to blame…

    Goper’s Lament

I am sad to state the truth, but I am afraid that it has been that for quite a while now. A laughing stock that is.

  121. Harry Says:

    Absolutely brilliantl!

While everyday more and more dedicated American soldiers are needlessly killed and maimed in a horrific no-win situation, the Administration has successfully shifted the spotlight from their failed strategy (based on shameful misrepresentations originally made to the public) to a “controversy” over a slogan!

    Boy, these guys are good!

  122. dd Says:

Bookend the prez and squeeze him like a zit… thanks Rummy (for once)!!!

  123. Phil E. Drifter Says:

    Yeah…didja get that memo?

  124. Darren7160 Says:

Possibly they can get help from Alice to find their way home. Just as we always suspected, what fits on a bumper sticker does not make good policy. Sigh. Why would anyone sacrafice their own reality and truth to this man?

  125. Pete Says:

    The Great Decider

Oh-oh yes, I’m the great Decider
Deciding who lives or who dies.
My mind’s out of touch - I flip flop way too much
I’m shameful - my life full of lies.

Too real is this feeling That I’ve been caught
My clothes are all gone, my whole term comes to naught

Oh-oh yes, I’m the great Decider
Deciding’s hard work for a clown.
Deciding you see, made a fool out of me
    I’m wearing my ass for a crown………..
Deciding can sure drag you down.

  126. Rick Says:

    Hmmmm.

Squirt it on. Light him up.

  128. pete Says:

these losers are flip flopping like fish outa water, pathetic.

  129. tmcveighdiedahero Says:

Would it be too much to ask that they play the W soundbite, “we’ve never been stay the course,” and then ask Rummy to comment. I mean you can say that W took a shit in the laundry room and Rummy can deny it but if you have a videoclip of W shitting in the laundryroom, the denial becomes more entertaining.

  130. Sharon Cox Says:

Oh, MA, did I offend you and heir rummy you’re bestest friend after bush?…. Well, so sad, to bad…Get over it ,or not. No one here care’s…..I forgot for a moment you and them are in lock step…No matter…..You and I are unimportant as you’re honey rummy would be if it was not for all the lives he has distroyed with his war monging, but then you know that, even thought you won’t admit it…..So take you’re little messages to rummy, cause they don’t matter to me at all…..In other word’s stuff it big guy…

  131. Kevin Martin Says:

It’s come that there are SO MANY LIES spinning around this administration it’s hard to keep track. At the very least a daily briefing of the “Lies of the Day” should be circulated to keep everyone on the same page.

  132. mroom Says:

If they would only communicate with email (which apparenlty the President doesn’t use), then they’d all get the daily talking points memo at the same time & they could better coordinate their fabrications.

  133. DJ Says:

    Talk about your “mexed missages”.

  134. DJ Says:

    Talk about your “mexed missages”!!!!!

  135. mmbriggs Says:

i don’t speak german so i don’t undrstand a thing bush, cheney, rumsfeld, hannity, limbaugh, et al are saying!

  136. Alexander Says:

Course! What course. I think Rummsfeld should be asked what is the frequency.

  137. nuTom Says:

Obviously Reichmarshall Rummy didn’t get the memo. What a tool.

  138. OCPatriot Says:

Why doesn’t the media get it? The truth is “Stay the course” and “Cut and run” have always been slogans. Slogans, nothing more. Slogans designed to confound critics. And they worked, as catch phrases. Now they’re starting to work, against the Republicans who used it. Bush and Rumsfeld and Cheney have finally decided they need to change what they’re doing, so “Stay the course” and its parallel “Cut and run” aren’t applicable any more. They want to lower the troop level and set a timetable, only they can’t admit it because good people like Murtha and the independent generals wanted this objective all along. Bush & Co. cannot admit they were wrong, because to do so would mean it was a stupid war, and needless people died. So you get the mixed messages until Rove can come up with something else that makes a good new slogan. Got it?

  139. Snowed Says:

Lets see. The message is “Bush has never been ’stay the course’” and Bush is “not backing away from staying the course.” Got it.
Black is white, but only when it’s red. Up is down, the GOP is going to win the elections, and we’re winning in Iraq. Got it.
Has anyone seen Bush’s tinfoil hat anywhere? I think he’s in need of it.

  140. MaxCalifa Says:

Of course Dear Leader is staying the course. Except when He isn’t. You are getting Sleepy Whatever Dear Leader said was correct. Very Sleepy Democrats are all about the cut ‘n run. Your Eye-lids are heavy We’ve always said stay the course…except when we didn’t. When I snap my fingers you will Vote for us or DIE!

  141. Buddhaplex Says:

GOP — Giving new meaning to the term “Flip Flop”

By the way, how are you defining “Stay”…because for Bush, “Stay” means “Change, but not really change…but CHANGE.”

  142. Theresa Says:

Somebody better send Rummy a snowflake…

  143. Edward Says:

they are all a bunch of lieing bastards and every person that voted these evil bastards into office again should be physically forced to go serve in Iraq.

THEY HAVE RUINED THIS COUNTRY AND ARE NOW DISTROYING THE BILL OF RIGHTS AND CONSTITUTION!!!

  144. Bob Guffanti Says:

What war? The gas price war across the street from WallyWorld ? I think we should all hop in our Intifadas or Escapades and go shopping, then engage in anonymous, unprotected sex with people of questionable sobriery. Happy days are here again ! The medication is working !

  145. Butch Pansy Says:

War? What war? That mission was accomplished ages ago! Let’s hop in our Intifadas and Escapades, hit the pump for cheap gas, go shoppiing with our pre-approved credit cards, then engage in unprotected, anonymous sex with people of questionable sobriety ! Happy days are here again! The medication is working!

  146. Butch+Pansy Says:

I’m getting confused, I think I’d better adjust the dosage.

  147. Alexander Says:

Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should have read the books by Caro on Lyndon Johnson. Johnson concluded that the US would win in Vietnam because he Lyndon Johnson had the biggest cojones on earth. Cheney Rumsfeld and Bush have concluded likewise with Iraq. The problem is that Johnson had bigger cojones that the current troiqa and Vietnam was a defeat. Clearly there is a problem with the deduction. The cojones best have some connection to the brain.

  148. jerry Says:

these lying neocon pukes sicken me. You know, maybe it’s just the pressure of the impending elections that has Rummy so shaken. I’d be off my game, too, if the only things separating me from a lifetime in the penitentiary - for looting the US treasury, lying under oath to congress, doctoring military intelligence to mislead a nation and a level of incompetence bordering on treason -were a handful of house and senate seats occupied by fat republican asses…temporarily occupied…very temporarily.

  149. Snow Falsely Claims Bush Said ‘Stay The Course’ Only 8 Times (Actually, It’s At Least 30) at FreedomFight Says:

[…] On Sunday, President Bush told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that his Iraq policy has “never been stay the course.” (Today, Rumsfeld disagreed, calling suggestions they were backing away from the phrase “nonsense.”) […]

  150. Alexander Says:

The story is as old as civilization. Evil is fought. Evil is
Evil so any steps necessarys are justified. Lies, reliance on dreams, denial of reality, character assisanation, the waste of life, waste of horrendous sums of money. Who knows what Bush talks to Laura about but most likely tells Laura ‘I must spread American values. American must be the beacon’. Bush is publicly a moral cretin but most likley a decent father and husband. Bush is on a neo-con morality mountain peak compared to thoise Bush assocaties with. . The same goes for Cheney and Rumsfeld. A lot of neo-cons are both publicly and privately immoral. Black humor is well served by the pretensions to morality that the neo-cons have.

  151. Political Waves » “Staying the course” by adjusting expectations and rhetoric Says:

[…] The military wants out of Iraq … the Iraqi’s want us out of Iraq … the American people want out of Iraq. Hell — even Bush boy Richard Armitage wants out of Iraq. And Dubby? Dubby will adjust for benchmarks — which is the new way of saying we’ll stand down when they stand up and meanwhile we’ll continue to build our state-of-the-art new bases. Still stuck in the old groove, Rummy and Holy Joe think “staying the course” is still a dandy deal. […]

  152. Steve Says:

They are arguing among themselves over the meaning of their slogans. These morons have got nothing. No good plan, no good ideas - nothing.

  153. pete Says:

America’s founders knew all too well how war appeals to the vanity of rulers and their thirst for glory. That’s why they took care to deny presidents the kingly privilege of making war at their own discretion.

But after 9/11 President Bush, with obvious relish, declared himself a “war president.” And he kept the nation focused on martial matters by morphing the pursuit of Al Qaeda into a war against Saddam Hussein.

In November 2002, Helen Thomas, the veteran White House correspondent, told an audience, “I have never covered a president who actually wanted to go to war” - but she made it clear that Mr. Bush was the exception. And she was right.

  154. Bill Rowan Says:

A course is a course, of course, of course. Where’s Wilbur when we need him?
