On Sunday, President Bush told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that his Iraq policy has “never been stay the course.” (Today, Rumsfeld disagreed, calling suggestions they were backing away from the phrase “nonsense.”)
Moments ago on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said “we went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he [Bush] ever used the phrase stay the course.” Watch it:
Apparently, the White House research team isn’t very good at “the Google.” ThinkProgress has documented 30 times that Bush has used the phrase to describe his policy in Iraq:
BUSH: We will stay the course, we will help this young Iraqi democracy succeed, and victory in Iraq will be a major ideological triumph in the struggle of the 21st century. [8/30/06]
BUSH: Stay the course also means don’t leave before the job is done. And that’s – we’re going to get the job done in Iraq. [8/11/06]
BUSH: As a matter of fact, we will win in Iraq so long as we stay the course. [7/11/06]
BUSH: And I saw people wondering whether the United States would have the nerve to stay the course and help them succeed. [6/19/06]
BUSH: If we don’t lose our nerve, if we stay the course, someday down the road, an American President will be working with democratically-elected leaders in the broader Middle East at the table to keep the peace. [3/24/06]
BUSH: Some critics continue to assert that we have no plan in Iraq except to, “stay the course.” If by “stay the course,” they mean we will not allow the terrorists to break our will, they are right. If by “stay the course,” they mean we will not permit al Qaeda to turn Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taliban – a safe haven for terrorism and a launching pad for attacks on America – they are right, as well. If by “stay the course” they mean that we’re not learning from our experiences, or adjusting our tactics to meet the challenges on the ground, then they’re flat wrong. [11/30/05]
BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. [8/4/05]
BUSH: And so the United States of America will stay the course and we will complete the task. We’ll help Iraq develop a democracy and the world will be better off for it. [11/21/04]
BUSH: My message is that – is that we will stay the course and stand with these people so that they become free. [9/23/04]
BUSH: We will stay the course so that they can develop an army and police force of their own so they can defend themselves. [9/13/04]
BUSH: We must stay the course until the job is done. [8/13/04]
BUSH: But Americans are used to hard work when it comes to a cause greater than ourself. And that’s what we’re doing. And we’ll stay the course. [4/20/04]
BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. [4/16/04]
BUSH: And we will stay the course in Iraq so that his son did not die in vain. [4/15/04]
BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course; we’ll complete the job. [4/13/04]
BUSH: We will stay the course in Iraq. [4/6/04]
BUSH: So we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5/04]
BUSH: You know, I told the family how much we appreciated his sacrifice – he was killed in Iraq – and assured him that we would stay the course. [4/5/04]
BUSH: I met with the family of a fellow who – who was killed in Iraq. … I told the – I told the dad, and the mom, and the wife that we’d stay the course. [4/5/04]
BUSH: This country will stay the course and get the job done. [4/2/04]
BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, because a free Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will make the world more peaceful. [1/23/04]
BUSH: And we will stay the course until the job is done. [1/12/04]
BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. [12/15/03]
BUSH: I was able to assure them that we were going to stay the course and get the job done, but I also reminded them what I said publicly, that it’s up to them to seize the moment, to have a government that recognizes all rights, the rights of the majority and the rights of the minority, to speak to the aspirations and hopes of the Iraqi people. [11/27/03]
BUSH: We will stay the course, and as more and more Iraqis realize freedom is precious and freedom is a beautiful way of life, they will assume more and more responsibilities, not only for security, but for humanitarian reasons, as well. [11/14/03]
BUSH: It’s in the national interest of the United States that a peaceful Iraq emerge. And we will stay the course in order to achieve this objective. [10/27/03]
BUSH: And we’ll just stay the course. [10/22/03]
BUSH: We talked about Iraq. And I told him and assured him that the United States would stay the course because we believe freedom is on its way to the Iraqi people. [7/14/03]
BUSH: We’re making steady progress. A free Iraq will mean a peaceful world. And it’s very important for us to stay the course, and we will stay the course. [7/10/03]
BUSH: Not only does the war on terror go on, but we’ve got a lot of work to do in Iraq. And we’re going to stay the course until the job gets done. [6/5/03]
Video Transcript:
GIBSON: Tony Snow, Thanks very much for joining us. Is it true the president has abandoned the line we’re staying the course and the new explanation of Iraq is there is a time line in place?
SNOW: This a great story, because we went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he ever used the phrase stay the course.
More cherry-picking White House intel.
October 24th, 2006 at 5:55 pmI will be so pleased when snow flake melt’s away, he isn’t even fun to watch..At least the other nut job black house reporter would squirm and create a little intertainment……Blessings
October 24th, 2006 at 5:56 pmA delusional, narcissistic liar.
October 24th, 2006 at 5:57 pmThey are betting that the old people who still watch people are forgetful enough that they won’t remember Bush ever using it, and are to old to operate a computer to check out websites like TP which show otherwise.
But… they hope their not too old to come out and vote with their forgetful little minds.
October 24th, 2006 at 5:59 pm…and the “reporter” followed up that statement with …
October 24th, 2006 at 6:00 pmNot that I enjoy defending these scum, nor have I read any details about this, but is it possible that some utterances of “stay the course” were from a speech given multiple times in one day and counted by TP as several but by the WH as one (because it was the same speech)? Could that account for the discrepancy? Just asking, is all. These people have never earned the benfit of the doubt from me, so I feel the burden is on them (the WH).
October 24th, 2006 at 6:01 pmWere the people looking for “stay the course” the same folks who were once looking for bin Laden? Apparently so.
It’s hard to find something you don’t really want to find.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:02 pmNothing like this surprises me anymore. They know they can get away with this bs so why not. Its all fun and games until 600,000 Iraqis are dead. Then its just fun… Right Dubbya?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:04 pmMr. Snow needs to spend more time on the Google.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:04 pmSnow was lying like a pig on his radio show LONG before his promotion to the White House.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:05 pmwe went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he ever used the phrase stay the course.
It really doesn’t matter if Pres Bush himself uttered that expression only once, Tony. Fact remains that the “strategy” of staying the course” was cornerstone of his Iraq policy for years.
Plus, many others repeated the expression ad nauseam: Cheney, Rusmfeld, Rice, and even you, Tony.
What, are you “cutting and running” from “stay the course” now?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:05 pmI think he deliberately lies just so he can get caught at it. That’s one twisted individual.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:05 pmBush was for stay the course, before he was against it.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:05 pmPatrick Henry Bush: I never said “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death”
October 24th, 2006 at 6:06 pmBush was for simplistic, juvenile, meaningless slogans before he was against them.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:07 pm“If you only say something eight times you can later tell people you never said it and you’re not lying.” Even a three-year-old knows that.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:07 pmOnce the post expanded I saw. He definitely said it a lot more than eight times even if you count the ones from the same day as one. That’s what I meant. He may have done it more than once during one day’s set of speeches and they counted that as one. But this llist shows that Snow was full of shit, as usual. Thank you.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:09 pmI love how Fox News splatters “You decide” at the right-bottom corner… those Republican liars lol
October 24th, 2006 at 6:11 pm…(*gigglinng uncontrollably*)…I think I just peed a little… ;p
October 24th, 2006 at 6:12 pmIt’s better for Snow to debate how many times Bush said “Stay the course” than to defend what it means. Great distraction!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:13 pmI heard a great piece of audio this morning, it was about 25 or so
October 24th, 2006 at 6:13 pm“Stay the Course” clips, just those three words, strung together, every one of them from the lips of the confused, bewildered Kim Il Bush II.
does the quip on 11.30.05 count as four?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:14 pmDid Snow know what Rumsfeld was saying just earlier in the day???? Is Bushco in complete disarray at this point: that Casey makes one statement, then Pace differs, then Bush says something, Rummy differs, Cheney comes in from Pluto or Eris or Xena….
October 24th, 2006 at 6:14 pmYou are sleepy, very sleepy, listen to the drone of my voice, very relaxed, sleepy, yes. Bush never said stay the course. Now on the count of three, you will wake up and remember Bush never said stay the course. One, two….
October 24th, 2006 at 6:15 pmTony’s next job will be selling GM cars with Hate a tee…’this car will get 500 miles per gallon,it’s almost FREE, it comes with free bumper stickers and will only turn right, just sigh this. Step up and get you new REPUBCON car!’
October 24th, 2006 at 6:16 pmKinda like the Simpsons, long ago:
October 24th, 2006 at 6:18 pmMarge: Homer, are you drunk?
Homer: NOOOOooooo…well, 10 beers.
Can’t you just picture a discussion/lesson about “honesty” and “integrity”…
…between Tony Snowjob…
…and his offspring?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:18 pmSnow used to be a regular poster at Free Republic; I guess that’s where he learned how to lie and distort.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:21 pmSnow has been caught in alot of bald faced lies lately.
Kind of like he is back home, working for Faux, huh?
I think if he actually told the truth, he would probably burst into flames.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:21 pmMaybe they should try the Obi Wan Kanobi hand gesture when they say this stuff, couldn’t hurt or be less effective….
October 24th, 2006 at 6:24 pmQuadrajet, that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long, long time.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:26 pm“Stay the course” must either mean “steadfastly wishy-washy,” or “firmly resolved to fail.”
October 24th, 2006 at 6:27 pm“Stay the Course”
October 24th, 2006 at 6:29 pmRisking all and doing a White House search on “Stay the Course”, I found the following in the 154 results returned. In the first 40 hits, I found 23 meaningful cititations. Within these 23 cites, there are 44 uses of the phrase.
Your War Slogan Wanted
October 24th, 2006 at 6:33 pmSo it looks like “STAY THE COURSE” is no longer our strategy for Iraq…
So now, the United States is looking for a new strategy for Iraq. With a new slogan!

October 24th, 2006 at 6:36 pmJUBA 2 out now great video
whats the best bit is the comments from the world ???? Great comments guess you guys would like to read the comments ???? Juba 1 was better I thought
October 24th, 2006 at 6:36 pmIs snowbaal wearing a pink shirt?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:37 pmThey can’t possibly be that stupid can they?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:38 pmEven if some of these utterances were from the same speech, or on the same date, that really doesn’t diminish the lie by Snowjob. This was THE main slogan by Bush&Co for the past three and a half years, and they can try to run from it, but this one is embedded in the mind of the public.
Wayne, Snowjob’s burning pants will give us a live display of “spontaneous combustion” on television one of these days.
this is like some huge dysfunctuinal family, with GW as the petulant three year-old who rules the lot. Or that episode of the Twilight Zone where they all keep agreeing with ludicrous demands made by the kid or they’ll “disappear” to the cornfield. SICK SICK SICK
October 24th, 2006 at 6:38 pmwhere’s is bill bennett in all of this? why isn’t he commenting on the president’s sin of lying? when clinton was in office he couldn’t shut up about it!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:40 pmBush was for “stay the course” until he was against it, until he was for it again, until he was against it again.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:41 pmThe WaPo puts it quite nicely that it all depends on the interpretation of “stay the course” which may have sadly weered off the, err… course:
A phrase meant to connote steely resolve instead has become a symbol for being out of touch and rigid in the face of a war that seems to grow worse by the week, Republican strategists say. Democrats have now turned “stay the course” into an attack line in campaign commercials, and the Bush team is busy explaining that “stay the course” does not actually mean stay the course.
Thus, the perceived need for an Orwellian rewrite. “Stay the course” was NOT meant to connote “Attempted suicide by repeatedly ramming your head against the wall”.
Some more weirdspeak:
Tony Snow: The President is determined not to leave Iraq short of victory, but he also understands that it’s important to capture the dynamism of the efforts that have been ongoing to try to make Iraq more secure, and therefore, enhance the clarification — or the greater precision.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:42 pmQuestion: Is the President responsible for the fact people think it’s stay the course since he’s, in fact, described it that way himself?
Tony Snow: No.
Incompetent idiots can;t even coordinate their lies so they’re in synch with each other. How pathetic. And we wonder they can’t even properly wage a war.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:43 pmBut I thought that he had said it 0 times…? Gosh it’s confusing, trying to keep track of all the GOP “reality” streams…
October 24th, 2006 at 6:44 pmI think if he actually told the truth, he would probably burst into flames.
Comment by Wayne
Now that I’d pay to see.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:46 pmWhich is it now?? “stay the course” or “cut and run”?? I wish this neocon crackpots would get their talking points straight. It’s clear that the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is saying and the entire GOP is rapidly coming apart at the seams…..what a farce!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:50 pm#32 – RUCerious, I know it’s old, wouldn’t have thought about it but then I saw Jaba the Hut (Hastert, of course) slithering his way into the ethics committee hearing this afternoon and it came to mind.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:52 pmAll I’ve ever heard from these guys is “stay the course”. It’s THEIR SLOGAN, they made it up and used it to describe THEIR way of fighting the war. Along with another over-played slogan that THEY invented called “CUT AND RUN”. They’re not pretending that they never said that one hundreds of times now are they?!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:52 pmThe Snowman is smooth, gotta hand it to him, his pink slip that is.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:55 pmsnow is just one of many arrogant liars from the bush gang, he merely puppets what bush says, without thought or meaning.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:58 pmsnow is just one of many arrogant liars from the bush gang, he merely puppets what bush says, without thought or meaning.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:58 pmThey’re all just lost now, caught up in their own ham-handed attempts to manage public perception through manipulative, simple-minded, and utterly irrational rhetoric. Now to sit back and watch the fun!
October 24th, 2006 at 6:58 pmwhat happened to the ‘bring the integrity back to the white house’? republikkkons?
October 24th, 2006 at 6:58 pmWayne A. Schneider, everybody,
Go to Google and click the Advanced Search button just to the left of the Search box. In the “with all of the words” field enter “Georg Bush”. In the “with the exact phrase” field enter “stay the course”. Then in the “Domain” field enter “whitehouse.gov”
This will return 98 entries. 90% of them are individual times that George Bush has used the phrase “stay the course” a couple are of Scott McClellan and others saying it. But Scotty McClellan was speaking for the president.
Bush has used the phrase stay the course well over the 30 times Think Progress has documented. So, no, Tony Snow is a flat out liar.
BTW: You better do this quick before the WhiteHouse.gov website is scrubbed.

Now that I’d pay to see. – Comment by Wayne A. Schneider
********Well of course you would, Wayne A. Schneider (not to be confused with the half-named Wayne). But a guy who equates GWB with UBL often finds such things entertaining. My cousins wife had an interesting comment about your finally getting it off your chest about “Bush the Terrorist”. (This particular cousin worked at Cantor Fitzgerald.)
October 24th, 2006 at 7:05 pmBut…I’m too much of a lady to repeat her verbatim….
And, where is the MSM on this story. Where are the snarky gibes about Bush and his lack of honesty? It does not mean anything unless the truth is fed back to the people. This is the era of the Big Lie. Say it enough and it will become accepted as the truth. Remember Gore and all the lies that became true because the MSM picked it up and repeated it?
October 24th, 2006 at 7:06 pmThe hell you are you whacky beatch.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:08 pm#59
you will never see the msm spitting on the gop. remember they(msm) work for the very folks(zionists) that support bush(nazi).
October 24th, 2006 at 7:14 pmNow that we’re not “staying the course” anymore in Iraq, what are we doing there? What does Snow want to call it now? I call it deja vu all over again. I wonder if Snow remembers those helicopters on the roof of the U.S. embassy in Vietnam? If we don’t start facing reality and doing some real withdrawal planning for Iraq, we might as well start building lots more helicopter landing pads right there in the Green Zone.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:15 pmRUCerious and Quadrajet, I actually did laugh out loud at your comments – and I’m alone in my office with my boss! (that didn’t sound good, did it?)
But…I’m too much of a lady to repeat her verbatim….
Comment by mighty+aphrodite — October 24, 2006 @ 7:05 pm
Aw, c’mon, I doubt that!
And, on that note, I’m heading home.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:15 pmThis is fun. On the Whitehouse.gov site alone, the phrase “stay the course” appears way more than 30 times, certainly way, way more than 8 times. Heck, Snow used it himself on at least 3 occasions.
The second thing you do is you stay the course. – Snow, July 10, 2006
And that’s why the President is determined to stay the course. – Snow, August 16, 2006
But on the other hand, you also cannot be a President in a wartime and not realize that you’ve got to stay the course. – Snow, August 17, 2006
October 24th, 2006 at 7:17 pm#63 – “….loud at your comments – and I’m alone in my office with my boss! (that didn’t sound good, did it?)…” Comment by Jane E. Schneider
*******Not for your boss.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:23 pmIf Tony Snow can keep a debate going on how many times Bush said or didn’t say “stay the course” then he won’t have to answer the question of what it means. Clever.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:23 pmI hope this hair-splitting does not go on for another two years. More realistically, what is going to happen just after the elections? Gotta weasel out because I don’t think the draft will be re-instituted. So, give Iran a chunk, give Syria a chunk (with written promises to hand it back later) and create a rump Kurdistan with a US armored division to keep the Turks out? Or what? I mean really it’s nice to “Nya Nya Nya” over a the guys who have stupidly put their fingers into the masher because they thought they were “THE GOD-ENHANCED MILITARISTIC COOL” but still, there is frigging game matrix to fill in.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:32 pmThe Bush Whitehouse gang as usual, is depending on “talking points” to carry their message. They are trying to reduce the entire past three and a half years of “stay the course” (not ONLY in the use of the verbatim phrase, but MAINLY in the constantly driven home POLICY) to a war of words. Did he say it? Didn’t he? This is so much more despicible than “That depends on what you mean by ‘is’.” The point here Mr. Snow and Dubya is that your entire Iraq policy for the past 3.5 years has been to move forward with blinders on directly toward armegeddon. If that’s not “stay the course” I don’t know what is. I sure wish Laura and your idiot dog would come to their senses and help you see the error of your ways. How could we all have been so STUPID to believe that GWB did not really want to change his Iraq policy????
October 24th, 2006 at 7:32 pmYou gotta wonder why these guys are so sensitive about this one.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:34 pm#63 – Jane, I had the same reaction when I read MA claiming to be “too much of a lady” for something……
October 24th, 2006 at 7:35 pmFor a President who exhibits such strong characteristics of the curiousity and the quest for the knowledge, you’d think the WhiteHouse would have a subscription to the Lexis and the Nexis.

October 24th, 2006 at 7:39 pmAs the Ministry of Truth told us: “We are at war with Eastasia, we have always been at war with Eastasiaâ€.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:40 pmThey really DO think they control the press, and electronic media – including videotape, apparently.
“We are at war with Eastasia, we have always been at war with Eastasiaâ€
October 24th, 2006 at 7:40 pmAll of this is just a part of Bush’s “secret plan” for Iraq. The one we don’ t and can’t know about, cause we’d mess it up.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:41 pmThink it is about time Tony Snow resigned because he has provided “aid and comfort to our enem..strike that..aid and comfort to the democrats.”
October 24th, 2006 at 7:45 pmTHE REPUBS HAVE COMPLETELY LOST IT

October 24th, 2006 at 7:48 pmQuadra (70) – perhaps, with enough plastic surgery, she can be once, twice, three times a lady. Sorry, Mighty Afraudite, but with your false claims about your legal skills, no one takes anything you write at face value anymore, not even your gender.
While Rove sings “Send in the Trolls”
And Saddam had his Baghdad Bob,
While Bush pulls the strings on Tony Snow Job.
With the entire resources of the United States Government at their command, the White House found only a small fraction of actual incidents. But, what the heck, they couldn’t find Bin Laden either. The most powerful army in the world and we can’t find a 6′ Arab on dialysis. For 5+ years.
Makes you wonder…could they have overlooked some WMD’s, which are now in the hands of insurgents and terrorists in Iraq?
Are we supposed to trust this Administration’s ability to find and capture terrorists, when they can’t even perform a simple google search?
Speaking of which, did you catch Bill Maher talking about that fake football stadium threat? Why was this Administration so out to lunch on that one?
October 24th, 2006 at 7:52 pmoff topic: lots of rumors on the Internets claiming that many of the October casualties in Iraq were the result of a mortar and rocket attacks on Camp Falcon Oct, 10th (reported as ammo dump explosion)south of Baghdad and that the casualties are being released daily to soften the publicity blow before the elections.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:52 pmThey are sure having fun messing with American’s minds aren’t they. What do they think this country is….their playground?
It is absolute unadulterated insanity. They have reduced the level of dialogue in this country to a bar room brawl….to a high school cafeteria. They have pulled in the Nation ….into a juvenile and dysfunctional mind state. GET RID OF THESE PUNKS. IT’S INSANE…………..WE’RE BETTER THAN THIS.
October 24th, 2006 at 7:56 pmHe never said he’s govern from the center, he never said Saddam had WMD’s, he never said Saddam was involved with 9-11 and he damn well never said “stay the course.”
Got it?
October 24th, 2006 at 7:59 pmI’ll say it again – Bush and his propagandists lie the way the rest of us breathe. It’s an involuntary reflex action for them.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:07 pmp.s. You know things are bad when they’re “cutting and running” from their own propaganda points.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:09 pmMadison Guy
> Now that we’re not “staying the course†anymore in Iraq, what are we doing there? What
> does Snow want to call it now? I call it deja vu all over again. I wonder if Snow remembers
> those helicopters on the roof of the U.S. embassy in Vietnam?
Interesting read, but this time risks to be far more fugged up than the last one. I don’t doubt that a proper airlift can be organized from the Green Zone even if insurgents fire mortar rounds into it, but what comes after that will be just be a long string of atrocities like Bosnia only worse, with intermittent tactical bombings by the US. In Vietnam, at least, “someone” (even if not necessarily a fun customer) took over.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:10 pmAs long as the Bush White House can get the Democrats to split hairs about the neocon bumper sticker slogans there won’t be serious discussion about the failed Iraq policy and Bush’s and Rumsfeld’s place at the lead of it all. Our soldiers are dying in Iraq for what reason again? Or rather, what reason this time.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:12 pm#82 They haven’t denied “compassionate conservatism” yet, have they?

October 24th, 2006 at 8:17 pmWhat’s awkward? Speak up coward! If you got something to say then say it, coward!
October 24th, 2006 at 8:19 pmNumbers mean jack to Tony. Remember how when asked about the 2500th death in Iraq, Tony replied, “It’s a number”.
“Being a receptacle for your Repugnacan masters: Pricele$$”
October 24th, 2006 at 8:21 pm81. “They have pulled in the Nation ….into a juvenile and dysfunctional mind state.”
That’s right. Psychopathics. Anti-Social Personality Disorder. Psychological Projection.
It’s all documented. And these Republicans are clear cases.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:22 pmThat’s why “Stay the Course” is still #5 on the Top 10 GOP Sound Bites List.

Im tired of listening, but I can’t beleive the $HIT that comes out of this admins mouth…. If we can’t get them out in November and bring war crime charges on them all then we need to do something..
October 24th, 2006 at 8:48 pmGuess Snowjob Tony also can’t count….among other more obvious personality defects.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:53 pmReview time, kids! (Apologies if someone has already covered these):
“The President is determined to stay the course.” – Tony Snow, 8/16/06
This afternoon, Tony Snow went on CNN to defend the administration’s stay the course strategy in Iraq. (9/5/06)
Yesterday on Meet the Press, former Rove deputy Ken Mehlman tried to claim that conservatives are not coming in and saying ‘Stay the course’ in Iraq… (8/14/06)
In today’s Washington Post, the White House complains that its critics use the term “stay the course” to describe President Bush’s strategy in Iraq. (8/31/06)
White House Counselor Dan Bartlett claimed that the administration has never had a stay-the-course strategy.
Bush responded, ‘We’ve never been stay the course, George!’
Don Rumsfeld: “Of course” Bush is “not backing away from staying the course.”
“The idea that somehow we’re staying the course is just wrong. It is absolutely wrong.” – Tony Snow, 9/5/06
And now…
Moments ago on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said we went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he [Bush] ever used the phrase stay the course.
October 24th, 2006 at 8:54 pmYour vote is a gift…use it and show the world that we are still champions of democracy.
October 24th, 2006 at 9:00 pmMy girlfriend said she faked her orgasm only 29 times when we had sex this month, Tony Snow falsely claimed 31 times, bastard…..
October 24th, 2006 at 9:11 pmNow we’re arguing over how many times he said it?! This is beyond lame.
October 24th, 2006 at 9:19 pmAmerica’s Least Wanted
That’s the lamest excuse I’ve heard. I thought I heard the lamest of the lame from this administration.. but this tops it.
Then to hear what rumsfeld said… its just stupid.
October 24th, 2006 at 9:49 pmHaha, you know what? I think that’s how many you put up when you first debunked it (americablog followed suit).
He probably just looked it up on this website.
October 24th, 2006 at 9:57 pmThese people are some of the biggest liars, murderers, and traitors in American history. Don’t let the Republicans win this November. If they lose, don’t let the Democrats turn this crime into just political capital so they can push their agenda for 2 years with a lame-duck president in office. There must be justice.
I say this with utmost seriousness:
We are at crossroads. We can either improve our democracy, advance freedom, and lead the world to a better future (that means arresting and prosecuting ALL of these bastards).
OR….
We can let these neo-con criminals and their media allies get away with it. If that happens, you can kiss our precious democracy goodbye. The next group of right wingers that get into power will be worse and they will be emboldened to force corporate rule on all of us. No debate, no dissent, just dead and disappeared people. It will the end of America as we know it.
FASCISM is alive and well and it wraps itself in our own flag. These people will not stop until they assert OVERWHELMING control. THEY are the ones who hate America. They hate freedom, democracy, free speech, and I’m afraid us too. We are an inconvenient roadblock to their vision of a fascist state. That’s why they are so quick to attack any dissent, why they are so hell-bent on reducing the federal government to a war and trade entity exclusively. They attack our judiciary because they are the only branch of government that can protect our freedoms.
They must NOT be allowed to succeed.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:21 pm#19 That gives the retards a little boost to their self-esteem. Don’t be a DD hater.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:27 pmSnow used to work for Faux News. Why would he start telling the truth now? Faux News … We Report, You Decide if it’s BS.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:27 pmMA is as much of a lady as Ken Mehlman…oh, I am sorry MA, madame.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:29 pmIf Mighty Moron is a lady, then I’m a cumquat from Queens.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:41 pmCumquat, excellent word.

Nope, Watergate was superboring by comparison. Oops, showing my age…
October 24th, 2006 at 10:52 pmLOL, SKdeA, I would bet it was. Back then they actually were shocked by corruption. It is the MO of the Republican party now…kinda passe.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:55 pmDo you have it on tape? No? Then I didn’t do it?
I did so have sex with my wife! I have the tape to prove it.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:09 pmIt a appears that I am a persona non grata on “thinkprogress” as well now! I assume it is because I am a Canadian, or that I live in China, or that I do not support the corporate control of the world. Those are the only things I have said that I could possibly attribute to my posts no longer being posted?
The river of sin runs deep and wide.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:19 pmDoug, huh? Canadian? Chinese? No…I don’t think so.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:26 pmThat has to be the most hilarious thing I have heard all week.

I wouldn’t think so either but maybe the net has been moving slow. I couldn’t find my posts for a couple of days now. Then today well, it looks like they have come up #112 was one that I had not seen after posting today. There were others that did not appear. I guess the net is just slow lately.
I was wrong to complain so quickly.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:32 pmTP has been having some issues as of late. + signs in the names and not seeing posts shpw up immediately. Don’t worry bout it =) Besides according to GrOPers my memory is only 36 hours long!!

So whats the plan now? Stray from the course?
October 25th, 2006 at 1:05 am[...] UPDATED: How much longer will we let these bastards lie to us?? [...]
October 25th, 2006 at 1:21 amI’ve heard the President say “stay the course” in speeches more than eight times MYSELF. I don’t know what Tony Snow is thinking. He’s avoiding the issue, which is exactly what the Bush Administration does when they’re called out on something.
October 25th, 2006 at 2:10 amBush’s “We were never ’stay the course’” like “Samantha’s magic,” only it doesn’t work. Very funny. But informative with links back to 2003 showing stay the course all the way through a couple of weeks ago…
http://www.miserywatch.com/2006/10/like_magic.html
October 25th, 2006 at 2:11 ambetting junkies can plunk down money on anything…
tony snow is a pathological serial spinner who will lie about ANYTHING…
at what percentage of demonstrable lies do we need to call for this guy’s head?
October 25th, 2006 at 3:03 amStay that, their course…If only the course had not been tied to lies and deceit, if only the course had been directed towards helping a nation with out making a profit on the death of our citizens and those women, children and men who have died for our nobel cause. If only our children were not dying in this war that was brought to fruition by a leader who never served in the millitay nor did most, who have so wanted this seige on humanity. War is death and death is death. Pat Tillmans brother wrote a beautiful letter about his loss and the loss of his brother. Their were over 1,000 and then some comments. I could not comment because the site was eiyher stopped or too many comments. Today I came upon some old info about the tortures of children in Iraq by our troops. I tried to go back and find the info but could not get it back. The ACLU TOOK THE ADMINISTRATION TO COURT AND THE JUDGE ORDERED ALL INFO TO BE RELEASED. The government never released the info. This info shows that from the top down children were tortured and raped. Rumsfeld has sat back and knows, that this government has done unspeakable acts to humanity. We are creating terrorists as I write. It is time to take America back.
October 25th, 2006 at 5:48 amDear serpendity, I too have only become interested in politics this past year. I was appalled by the torture and had many sleepless nights, this was not America. I was apalled by the lack of immeadiate attention to the people on free ways, with out food and water, during the Katrina, killing fields. This is not America! I too find spirituality lacking in every aspect of our government. We are truly breeding terrorists by our inhumane treatment of the Iraqi people. ACLU, was accorded by a judge that all picture and vidios of rapes of children and women by our troops in Iraq prisons be released. The administration has been defient and has as yet not allowed these horrible pictures of abuse to be put fourth. Imagine a few years ago who would think that I would be seen as a crazy person claiming that our government has been ordered by the courts to present information about killing and rape of children in Iraq and they will not release it. We truly live in a Orwellien society. Compassion and empathy are a part of the past. However, we can change the direction and break this war crimminal profit mongering government by being active!
October 25th, 2006 at 6:18 amWhat I find so interesting is that in my life I have never felt a need to want to protect America. I truly have a huge calling to speak and yell and tell everyone our civil liberties are being revoked ! We are at a cross road and it can go many ways. Vote absentee ballot. The electronc machines have no paper trails and can be hacked. Read Brad Blog .com.
October 25th, 2006 at 6:41 amThis raises the question: How many times does the President need to say something before we’re supposed to know that he really means it?
October 25th, 2006 at 7:14 amMany of my friends who have switched parties this year have done so because to remain supportive of the Bush Administration & the Republican gang is intellectually embarrassing. The “Cut and Run” Bush Administration is really counting on people to be blind to history and the truth. I guess we will find out if the they are correct about their voter base being easily manipulated and naive in just a couple of weeks.
October 25th, 2006 at 8:34 amthe reason that snow was chosen for this job was that he had all the traits of a pathalogical liar. the criteria required to be in the bush whitehouse.
October 25th, 2006 at 8:45 am[...] No one ever said stay the course. No one. Ever. Certainly not the president of the united states. Habeus Corpus was overrated anyway. [...]
October 25th, 2006 at 9:07 amGet the story out that Snow is a deliberate liar and have someone from the media confront him directly and publicly on his lies. This way , not only is his credibility destroyed, but so is the credibility of the White House and Fox News.
October 25th, 2006 at 10:43 am“Whaddya gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes?”
October 25th, 2006 at 10:56 amJust keep hitting your head Tony.
October 25th, 2006 at 3:24 pmMore skewing of the facts, aka bold face lying. I’m not American, but I realise a large majority of US citizens have finally woken up from their slumber. Pretty much most of Europe realised Bush was a treachorous little squinty eyed nazi that would lie his a55 off and would sacrifice anybody (except his corporate buddies)to further the new world orders grip on global economics. These ba5tards would chip and tag you at birth if they could get away with it, and who knows! Still, a lot of EU citizens were amazed when the fuhrer got re-elected. I dont think many of us really believe the most blatant bare faced, evil, lying and murderous government in the history of the USA will ever be brought to book. Shame, it would be a major boost for the average concienscious person the world over but the effect for America could be huge. Of course that will never happen. If these cronies ever get investigated it will be by their own government buddies.
October 25th, 2006 at 3:42 pmAmerica needs to find a way soon before their is no constitution or bill of rights. This government has sold out America, and the media silence is deafening. Maybe the media will wake up and get out of the governments soiled bed, but I doubt it. History will show this time in Americas history as despicable and shameful for a 1001 reasons.
Bravo to everyone commenting on this site!!! Although, I have to admit that the comment from “mighty + aphrodite†(comment #58) completely lost me. I’m happy to see more Americans waking up –glad to hear that people are changing political party loyalties– my family has always voted Republican — not in 2004 and not anymore!!! Hopefully the Dems can turn things around, but I think that’s probably too much to hope for. I apologize ahead of time if I’m preaching to the choir with these comments. As long as Government is in bed with Corporate America, and Mainstream Media/MSM (and AIPAIC) is in bed with the Government, I’m afraid it’s going to take a lot more effort to turn this country around. In a recent conversation with a doctor who was one of the first responders to the WTC tragedy on 9/11 – in talking about what has happened to this country—he said that his wife who is French could not believe that Americans are so blind to what is going on, claiming that if this was happening in her country, masses of people would be in the streets protesting. We have groups protesting – like- The World Can’t Wait and United for Peace and Justice– but they don’t seem to be nearly massive enough. If you travel the country, and talk to people, there are pockets of folks who seem to have a clue, and then there are those who are completely lost in space. The kind of corruption we are seeing played out in this country right now has been going on for a long time –it doesn’t take a rocket scientist nor serious research to find evidence of it. It’s there if you look for it – especially with Internet access – why do you think Big Bro is now trying to place further control over our Internet and seems to be engaging AT&T in an effort to do just that.
The U.S., Britain and Israel have a long track record of hubris, it’s just gotten to be a whole lot more obvious as their wealth and power has grown (Is not pride suppose to be the most deadly of sins?) and their record of instigating terrorism (i.e. killing their own people) to aggressively direct foreign policy to meet an agenda of global hegemony is becoming even more obvious to many people. See Naeim Giladi’s “The Jews of Iraq†and Victor Ostrovsky’s “By Way of Deception†(both of these guys had to go to a lot of trouble to get their books published) –this is just a small taste of this kind of deadly corruption that our current administration has on parade now for all to see. Take note “mighty + aphrodite.†When will the rest of America wake up and look beyond the anesthetizing mainstream media to put the puzzle together and realize that people of moral conscience need to take a stand while we still can. How do we still have those naively asking, “Why does the rest of the world have no respect for (or hate) us?†Well when you try to destroy other people’s lives for your own selfish greed—-Duh!?!?!?! More Americans need to be reading/researching/investigating on their own or in groups –not be so blinded/gullible as to think that our fearless leaders who lead us into fear love us like we are their children – they’re all out just to make a buck at anyone else’s expense as long as they don’t get caught. Members of Congress from both parties are so complicit in their duplicity that it won’t matter too much who is elected unless these new representatives have some sense of morals.
TBC…
October 25th, 2006 at 4:04 pmIt reminds me of the joke that was passed around (now I’m not so sure that it was really a joke) – it was a laundry list of numbers of people who fall into different crime categories like extortion, grand larceny, assault, etc., and asked “what does this list represent?†The answer – “your U.S. Congress.â€
If more people would just get their heads out of their behinds and start doing something useful by taking a sharper look at key topics forming the big picture that are simply “glossed over†by MSM and particularly those things that are completely disregarded by the mainstream newsreel (see Amy Goodman’s new book, “Staticâ€), U.S. citizens would be in a much better position to take back our country. The two-party system has failed us greatly – we’ll see what the Dems can do to take out many of the incumbents. We have the advantage now of the power of the Internet. Remember how knowledge of google and craigslist spread just by word of mouth. We have to get more people to take a look at what’s out there to be learned, and not from MSM, but by starting with things like http://www.whatreallyhappened.com and http://www.radicalleft.net. There are so many more great blogs to read and you begin to ask more questions and analyze, seeking truth. Things have already progressed way out of control – each day I read the newspaper – even the MSM paints a partial picture of this disaster that unruly capitalism is creating by promoting monsterous insatiable greed. For example, the 2006 Military Commissions Act that was passed just last week– no more habeas corpus! Hello America! What does this really mean in terms of our Constitutional rights—duh!?!?! This was blatant, right out in the open –right under our noses! And what is Congress doing!?!?!?! There were some who challenged it and tried to amend this new punitive legislation, but failed (see Wikipedia). I loved Keith Olbermann’s performance on MSNBC (see YouTube). Even if you don’t tune in to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, you still should have gotten some clue from Olbermann that this cannot be a good thing–even for the average American. How foggy can some people be??? Listen up “mightly+ aphrodite, don’t want to pick on you, but you may not think it matters now, but when there is something that really does affect you and your right to speak out and protest is then taken away and you or your family is thrown into a jail cell and the key tossed away and you are now without rights to an attorney and to be tried in a court of law for something that you didn’t do or for your beliefs or point of view, then maybe you will start to care. And what’s with all of those signing statements, George?!?!?!? What a disgrace this administration has been to this country!!! My friends from Iran are starting to see a pattern forming here. They left their country in a diaspora for a new home (after we meddled in their government over at least the last half-century so that they did not have any hope for a real democracy). They came to a country that “supposedly†guarantees freedom & justice (i.e. “life, liberty and the pursuit of happinessâ€) to its citizens under the founding principles of our democracy as laid out in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.
October 25th, 2006 at 4:06 pmWhere is it all going? Where are we headed? Each day it’s looking a little scarier for all of us! Middle class disappearing, pension reform—meaning guess what, no more pension—it was all smoke and mirrors, layoffs & offshoring of jobs so CEOs can further line their pockets from cost savings, rising health care costs/insurance, horrible public education (necessitating home schooling or private schools), etc., etc. Do we really believe all of the government statistics published in the news about improving job market, lower budget deficit, etc.? Then why was I working seven days a week on salary, and so is my spouse, and neither one of us have seen any more money in the last three to four years? In fact, I was earning less than I made in 2001! Everything is costing Americans more and little is being given back. Taxes are outrageous! Fearmongering and taking away our rights to “protect us†from the so-called “terrorists†is only doing us an injustice. No one is immune unless you are independently wealthy and continuing to grow wealthier. Just on Monday, the AFL-CIO filed a petition with the UN on new rules under federal labor law that are said to demonstrate how far outside of the mainstream of accepted international law the U.S. is headed. I’m not in a union, myself. In fact, I just left an above-average paying job on Wall Street, but I sure support people who are in unions because at least some people are still fighting for fair treatment and at some point we may have more white-collar unions other than the publishing industry and others that I may not be aware of. My father just lost his pension after 30 years with his company because of corrupt mismanagement by a CEO who walked away with a significant golden parachute. At least his union is trying to claw back some of that loss for the workers. Don’t get me started on Enron..I followed energy as an equity analyst and Arthur Anderson and the bankers did a pretty good job of pulling the wool over our eyes. Over $2 billion of pensions and $60 billion in market share were lost just like that. People who worked hard and saved for the “American Dream†are now living in poverty. Jeff Skilling walks away with a mere 24 years (what hubris! –the guy called a client an “asshole†for asking a tough question about the company on one of the conference calls that I was on in 2001). Kenneth “Kenny Boy†Lay, although supposedly deceased and cremated, has just had his charges dismissed by a judge (under a new ruling established in 2004). See http://www.stargazette.com Oct. 22 story on “Kenneth Lay Alive? Maybe†Who says money can’t buy freedom? Welcome to America!

Eloquently and passionately put. Clearly a real patriot, not just a flag waver.
October 25th, 2006 at 4:59 pmNot being American there are a whole host of issues that here in Britain we dont get to hear of. When I first heard rumours about 9/11 being an inside job (obviously not learned through mainstream) I felt compelled to keep reading on the subject until I filtered out the fluff and bull. The conclusion I came to was the same as millions of others. The trade center was brought down by contolled demolition and possibly in conjunction with other less conventional means of demolition/destruction. The former I think is widely accepted, but the latter is something that is sitting in plain view and Im amazed so few people see it. That is that an unconventional or unknown weapon helped to pulverise the trade centers and pretty much turn them to dust. The overwhelming lack of debris at ground zero points to something very fishy. Why did the top section of the trade center that tilted before falling turn to dust. When buildings fall in earthquakes and such, they leave behind slabs and slabs of concrete, huge pieces of steel. Also the rescue team found very few bodies, very little office furniture. Almost seems as though everything in those towers was vaporized. But I guess thats crazy talk. Well I implore anyone thinking that to aquire the footage CNN ABC and Fox aired of the very last piece of the towers to fall. It is steel construction material, almost spire like. I’m unsure of the size but comparing it to the buildings in the area it looks well over 50ft tall. As the tower hits the ground this massive piece that is still standing wavers side to side for a few seconds and gives way, as this 50ft piece of iron construction material falls it turns to dust in mid air. It is astounding and is a head scratcher to say the least.
See for yourself. The quicktime link is the best way to view as you can scrub back and frwd in the timeline and scratch your head with your other hand.

One damn lie leads to another.
October 25th, 2006 at 5:51 pmTony Snow himself has used the phrase, “stay the course,” at least a couple of times in describing Bush policy.
October 25th, 2006 at 10:09 pmYou all don’t get it. They are lying. They know they are lying. They then go home, and get off that they blatantly lied to you, and you cant do a damn thing about it. How in the world can you lie and say that Bush’s lies are a mistake of someone Else’s.
Stay home.
It doesn’t matter if you said something 5 times in a day or a year. If you deny you said it, you are a liar. But we all knew that, didn’t we…
