53. America’s ranking on Reporters Without Borders’s global press freedom index, dropping from 17th place in 2002. “Relations between the media and the Bush administration sharply deteriorated after the president used the pretext of ‘national security’ to regard as suspicious any journalist who questioned his ‘war on terrorism.’”
“Several governments around the world have tried to rebut criticism of how they handle detainees by claiming they are only following the U.S. example in the war on terror,” U.N. anti-torture chief Manfred Nowak said yesterday.
19 percent. Number of Americans who believe the United States is winning the war in Iraq, an all-time low. Fifty-four percent of Americans believe the U.S. economy is getting worse.
The natural world is being degraded “at a rate unprecedented in human history,” and if current consumption levels continue, “two planets would be needed to meet global demand by 2050.” The new report by the World Wildlife Fund also found that the world’s species have declined by 30 percent since 1970.
The House ethics committee “spent more than six hours Monday grilling” Scott Palmer, “Hastert’s chief of staff for more than 20 years.” “Kirk Fordham, Foley’s former chief of staff, said he alerted Palmer several years ago to his concerns about Foley’s friendships with pages.”
“The FBI and Justice Department appear to be expanding their probe into the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal in hopes of nabbing another member of Congress and aides,” U.S. News reports.
House International Relations Chairman Henry Hyde (R-IL) has written a letter to Donald Rumsfeld saying “that the U.S.-supported poppy eradication program in Afghanistan is a failure,” and that “record opium poppy harvests show efforts to target farmers are not working.”
“Former Enron chief executive Jeffrey Skilling, who gained infamy as the man who orchestrated one of the largest corporate frauds in history, has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.” Skilling will also “fork over $45 million in restitution should he lose his appeal.”
And finally: Wyoming Libertarian congressional candidate Thomas Rankin said Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-WY) threatened to slap him after a televised debate. “Barbara walked over to me and said, ‘If you weren’t sitting in that chair, I’d slap you across the face.’ That’s quote-unquote,” Rankin said. Rankin has multiple sclerosis and uses an electric wheelchair.

How about Limbaugh saying that Michael J. Fox is making his illness appear worse to garner votes for a Dem? Blech!!
October 24th, 2006 at 9:12 ambelieve me, i’d LIKE to believe in a possible dem congressional takeover, but i am concerned about two major unknowns… first of all, i am not all that optimistic about a takeover… why…? put bluntly, to me, election fraud seems not only possible but likely… nor should we count out karl rove and his penchant for pulling vicious, twisted, mutant rabbits out of hats at the last minute… either or both of those could leave us with even more of a mess than we already have… two, i am not at all convinced that the dems, even with a takeover, have either the collective ability or the political will to go to the mat to get stuff out in the open… their nearly six year record has been dismal, and looking for that to magically change in the space of a few weeks is, imho, a dangerously naive view, no matter how desirable… so, like the rest of us, i’m going to be on tenterhooks until the last results come in on november 7, at which time i will do one of two things – proceed immediately to the nearest tall building or open a bottle of sparkling sidra…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
October 24th, 2006 at 9:17 amAnd in other news, Enron’s former Chief Executice Jeff Skilling was sentenced to 24 years for his roll in the biggest corporate scandal ever.
Since Bush is touting the economy, it might do well to remember Enron. Bush’s good friend Ken Lay headed the company. It went belly-up due to fraud.
The judge at Skilling’s sentencing said Skilling’s crimes “have imposed on hundreds if not thousands of people a lifetime of poverty.”
As I’ve said earlier, unregulated Capitalism fails. Yet Congress, in its infinite lack of wisdom, continues to deregulate industries with disasterous results for the American public: the banking industry/savings and loans collapses; the airline industry/airline bankruptcies; the energy industry/Enron failure. In each case, a very few at the top rake of millions of dollars each while their workers lose everything.

I guess Keith Olbermann won’t be invited to the White House any time soon, either, after the blast he gave Bush and the Republican National Committee last night on his show over their spreading fear and terror among our population for the sake of gaining votes. For those who missed it, you really need to check it out:

I agree on Keith Olbermann’s commentary. As with the last several he has made, this is an incredibly bold, articulate, direct, and reasoned challenge to the Republican fear campaign. Olbermann is fast becoming the new Edward R. Murrow.

by Jay Randal
“Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything.” ( Josef Stalin )
“As long as I count the votes, what are you going to do about it?” Boss Tweed said that quote years ago, but Karl Rove basically counts the votes in America now!
When the Congress allowed Diebold, and other GOP affiliated voting machine manufacturers, to supply the country with new electronic computerized technology to vote, it gave away the cookie jar to the Republicans!
Verifying the authenticity of election results/outcomes is the cornerstone of democracy, so unverifiable vote tabulating systems undermine the foundation of fair counting of ballots, so destroy the democratic nation!
Fraudulent elections create uncontrollable corruption, and entrench a bureaucracy of incompetent criminals who fleece the coffers of government for their cronies, which leads to the downfall of the nation and its people!
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)
PS: Fight for honest elections in every State, or else the GOP will cheat forever, and the US will never get rid of the corruption in Washington.

This should surprise no one. This administration views any questioning of what it says as disloyalty not to the country, but to the president himself, and this is, in their eyes, worse than treason.
I, too, enjoyed Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment last night. It inspired me to write my own piece on the subject.

You don’t get it, Briseadh na Faire. This is what freedom is all about. Feel free to travel, but just don’t go sightseeing in Pakistan or Iran. Or Syria. Or Cuba or Venezuela or other places not approved by the government. You may find yourself getting arrested.
I mean, not by by their governments. But by our own. You might just find your butt getting hauled off to Gitmo or someplace to be held indefinately and without charges, thanks to the Republican Congress.
Now lets all join with the Bush Administration and help spread “freedom” throughout the world.

I know. When I was inthe Peace Corps the group that was in Western Russia because one volunteer was accused of being a CIA agent. I can’t imagine if something like that happened to someone now. They could be held with no recourse or help from our government now. Any country could say they are holding this person as an “enemy” in a secret prison and nothing could be done as they would be within the bounds of what the US is doing. Scary.

October 24th, 2006 at 10:33 amForgot to say that the Russia group was kicked out.
Wow, Chuck Schumer and Raum Emanuel have done an excellent job this year – making gains for centrist Dems while allowing prog candidates to slide far below other their peers with double digit lags to their competitors.
I can only assume that progs just love laying there and taking it.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:33 amOnly 19 per cent of Americans believe the United States is “winning” the war in Iraq. What is happening in Iraq is not a war but an occupation. The overwhelming majority of Americans recognize that the United States is caught in a quagmire in Iraq but yet ironically and outrageously no U.S. senator is calling for an immediate withdrawal of those troops from that slaughterhouse in Iraq. One wonders how many more Americans must needlessly die and how many others must return to this country grievously wounded and maimed and crippled [see the 1974 Oscar winning documentary Hearts and Minds which illustrated the plight of returning veterans from that hellhole in a place called Vietnam] before so-called liberals and Democrats will acknowledge that those troops should finally be withdrawn from that abattoir in Iraq as quickly and as rapidly as possible.

October 24th, 2006 at 10:39 amTime to write another ‘Ode to Olbermann’ email to msnbc.
Wow, Tom Delay, Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Dennis Hastert, Tom Foley, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and George Bush have done an excellent job over the last five years – making gains for Dems of all stripes while allowing their own and other neocons and conservatives’ poll numbers to erode far below even Nixon’s during Watergate.
I can only assure you that progs just love laying here and watching it.

October 24th, 2006 at 10:44 amI think we have an indicator for how things are going. All you have to do is look at what the respected political pundits, and I say this looking from the left and then the right, like Olbermann and Limbaugh are talking about. Limbaugh is questioning whether an actor with a disease is shilling for politics while Olbermann is questioning the fear mongering of the leader of the US.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:46 am#21, PLC,
Turning that phrase doesn’t work, because your progs aren’t making ANY gains. By your own admission months ago, simply supporting centrist Dems doesn’t advance any of your issues. If centrist Dems do win this year, all money will go to them, and you won’t have a prayer at advancing your causes – which serves my desires.
You had the right plan early on, you just let Schumer and Emanuel steal your meal ticket – dumb, dumb, dumb …
October 24th, 2006 at 10:48 amMr. Bush
Turning that “stay the course” phrase doesn’t work, because your abuse of the military in Iraq isn’t making ANY true gains. By your own admission months ago, you don’t care where Osama Bin Laden is, even though he is the leader of the terrorists who attacked us on 9-11. Simply changing the language and not changing goals or ideology is not going to advance this country. When Democrats take at least one of the houses of Congress, you will have to truly pray – for mercy and for your soul.
You had the right plan and the country behind you immediately after 9-11 happened, you just let Rumsfeld and Cheney squander your support from the American people – dumb, dumb, dumb …

Bottom line, no progs will make it to congress, so none of your policies will get traction. Pro-war Hill’reh and Lieberman will be major figures in the Dem party, and Dean will get booted as chair. Your movement prematurely blew its load, and now the adults will run things.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:03 am#27, Sharon,

October 24th, 2006 at 11:11 amMr. Bush, what fantasy place are you going to for vacation next, DisneyWorld or is BushWorld still enjoyable?
Bottom line, no neocons have made any predictions that have come true and so they are going to continue to be surprised by the reaction of the American people and the world in generally. Neocons will have their power based in Congress reduced, so their policies will begin to lose traction. And then the adults, moderate old-time conservative Republicans and moderate/progressive Democrats, will run things.
October 24th, 2006 at 11:13 am“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Independent voters overwhelmingly favor Democrats to take over the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 7 election and back them on major issues, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll said on Monday.
The independents surveyed said they plan to support Democratic congressional candidates over Republicans by a roughly 2-to-1 margin — 59 percent to 31 percent — the largest gap in the poll this year, The Washington Post said.
Forty-five percent said it would be good if Democrats recaptured the House majority, 10 percent said it would not and the rest said it would not matter, the newspaper reported.”
In 1994, the Republicans were able to attract independant voters by taking out a Contract on America.
The Republicans failed to get rid of entrenched speical interest, and even opened up the “K Street project” to give special intetersts their own special access. Good job, Republicans!
The republicans worked with Pres. Clinton to lower spending, then worked with pres. Bush to increase federal spending faster than a crack-whore with a stolen credit card. Good job, Republicans!
It’s the independant voters that drive who gets into office, and they’re sick and tired of the same-old same-old from entrenched bureaucracy Republicans.
Speaker Pelosi, save us from radical Republican excess!

You really ARE a Republican, aren’t you? Blaming someone else for your own failure is VERY Republican.
Why don’t you break up your response into simple sentences and post multiple times with a few sentences each post. That way, you can see at what point you’re (supposedly) blocked.
By the way, Speaker Pelosi will be happy that you think of her as being moderate. Compared to the radical Republicans, anyone to the left of Limbaugh must be considered “moderate”.

I seriously doubt that Mr. Hendler was responding with a (rational) rebuttal. Most likely, he either didn’t respond at all and claimed “censoring” or made a post filled with invective and vitriol and no real rebuttal.
I could be wrong! That’s the difference between Democrats and Republicans: we don’t assume perfection.
I wonder who Mr. Hendler will blame for the Republicans losing seats this coming November? I know he won’t blame the ones responsible: radical Republicans!
October 24th, 2006 at 11:54 amWow. Until recently Hendler was cocksure that the Republicans would pound the Democrats in this election. And now he is trying to taunt us because “centrist” Democrats will take over? You’ve come a long way in a short time, Jason. Just a little investigating here, a little investigating there, and whaddya know: it’s impeachment time.

You seem to be saying that because the Republicans control the reins of power, the Democrats, who are supposed to be the opposition party, should not voice their opposition to that quagmire in Iraq? Why have an opposition party if they are not allowed to show that they care for the troops by making sure that they are not placed in harm’s way for no legitimate reason? Unfortunately, the pusillanimous Democrats have shown that they do not actually care for the welfare of those troops because if they actually did care, then they would be calling for the immediate withdrawal of those troops in order to prevent them from being needlessly blown apart and shot at and killed. But, as we all know, that is not the case.

Of course, he will never admit to ever having changed the subject.

No, actually, I am saying that you are only blaming the Democrats for everything while ignoring the majority status of the Republicans. I have already stated my position, that our troops should be withdrawn immediately as our presence in Iraq is only causing more de-stablization at the cost of U.S. lives. That call, from me or any Democrat in Congress, will never be heard until there is a Democratic majority in at least one house of Congress.
October 24th, 2006 at 12:16 pmUnrelated to the topics listed I just want to ask where is the outrage from Ann Coulter and her minions? Todd Beamers dad is out campaigning for republican candidates, dragging his dead son’s name all over the country putting words in his mouth. He uses his son to endorse extreme radical republicans (pretty much covers them all). Recently he was campaigning for Peter Roskam in Illinois. Now I know Coulter dislikes harpies using their loved ones to advance political issues, is this the same thing? I also know that Coulter hates those harpies for making money off their dead husbands, does she also spew venom at Lisa Beamer who makes no bones about using her dead husband’s name for financial gain. If I am not mistaken I believe she even copyrighted the phrase “lets roll” and licensed it to Wal-Mart among others. So is it possible that these people will receive equal doses of venom from Coulter and the unhinged right for their unabashed use of their dead loved ones corpse for both political and financial gain?

Your comment is quite bizarre especially considering that we are basically on the same side. It is quite commendable that you are calling for immediate withdrawal since, as I have stated earlier, there seem to be few liberals and Democrats who are taking that position. But to claim that “I am only blaming the Democrats while ignoring the majority status of the Republicans” is not only totally false but also ludicrous. I have criticized the Republicans and neoconservatives on different blogs on many occasions. The reason that I have criticized the Republicans is the same reason that I have criticized the Democrats: neither party, for the most part, is calling for those troops to be immediately withdrawn from that abbatoir in Iraq. Withdrawing the troops from Iraq should, in my opinion, be the biggest issue in this country. Of course the Republicans are at fault for not going up against the Bush administration on this issue. But to ignore the fact that the Democrats should also be held accountable for not speaking out against the occupation in Iraq is to reveal the fact that you seem to allow partisanship to be held on a higher plane than the fact that the Democrtats’ hands are just as dirty and just as culpable as the Republicans. Again, as I said earlier, why have an opposition party if they are too afraid to speak out, apparently in fear that they will be labeled as being soft on national security if they call for those troops to be explicated from that slaughterhouse in Iraq? BOTH parties should be speaking out with a loud voice for those troops to be returned home and neither one is doing so.
A president named Lyndon Johnson sent hundreds of thousands of troops into a place called Vietnam. Democrats such as Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern spoke out against the war and urged that the troops be withdrawn from that quagmire. When Richard Nixon was president, he continued to wage war against the Vietnamese people. Again, the opposition party spoke out against the policies of the government and demanded that the troops be returned to this country. That party that spoke out and called for the troops to be withdrawn back then was not the Green Party. The political party that spoke out for getting those troops back home back then, the minority party, was called the Democratic party. They called for the withdrawal of the troops from Vietnam thirty five to forty years ago and they should now be calling for the troops to be immediately withdrawn today from Iraq. But, sadly, they are not.

Truce! I think we are in agreement and the problem seems to be that we have not often seen each other’s posts elsewhere and responded to those here in isolation. My sensitivity is that right now I think we have to get a Democratic majority in Congress, even with the not-so-progressive versions of Democrats on the ballot. We Democrats/progressives can not “eat our own” at this time. After we get the majority, then we can up the ante and expect more from our Democratic representatives.
October 24th, 2006 at 1:21 pmkaty – well put. No time to be screwing around partying. Talk to your neighbors (if you still can) and encourage everyone you know to participate in the election. Contact your country election office and demand to audit your vote!

October 24th, 2006 at 2:37 pmI’ve read a few comments criticizing Democrats for not speaking up against the War in Iraq. I can assure you, from personal experience that some Democrats are speaking up. I attended a press conference where they did just that. But the press conference was not reported in the Corporate Media.
In other words, Democrats are speaking up, but the Corporate Media does not report it. Then Corporate Media helps spread the falsehood that Democrats are not speaking up.

I’ll also refrain from (constantly) rubbing it in your face if you prove to be wrong. I’ll just say “I guess your prediction wasn’t correct, eh Mr. Hendler?”
Don’t worry, Speaker Pelosi will prove to be bi-partisan and not near as ultra-partisan as Speaker Hastert has proven himself to be. Would you care to wager (not monetary, just a rhetorical handshake) as to how effective a Democratically lead house will be in comparison to the current Republican one?
