The Dixie Chicks Ad NBC Doesn’t Want You To See

NBC is refusing to air an ad for the new Dixie Chicks documentary, “Shut Up & Sing.” Variety reports, “NBC’s commercial clearance department said in writing that it ‘cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President Bush.’”

Harvey Weinstein, who is distributing the movie, issued the following statement:

It’s a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America. The idea that anyone should be penalized for criticizing the president is profoundly un-American.

ThinkProgress has obtained the ad NBC doesn’t want you to see. Watch it:

Is it just me, or does it feel a little Third Reich-y thse past 6 years?

  4. Jay Randal Says:

Bush hates the Dixie Chicks, so he is leaning on the news networks to boycott any promotion of their movie! Very sad that NBC is afraid to stand up to Bush who is the worst president in United States' history > shame on NBC, so they must be boycotted by progressives now!

  5. cosmosis Says:

I'm with TR. NBC is a traitor.

  6. Ottnott Says:

    This is a joke, right?

I think we need to prepare to apply some strong pressure on the (crossing fingers) new chair of whatever House committee(s) oversee the FCC and broadcast licensing.

  7. Roger_Roger Says:

So we should force NBC to put on TV what we say? Aren't they allowed to do what they want?

  8. BlueDahlia Says:

Funny, but predictable. This film is not showing here anyhwhere, including our only alternative movie venue. It just shows you how red our state is.
And I live in the capital city.

  9. RUCerious Says:

Cowering, simpering weasely bastards. Did that cover it all?

  10. JJ Commoner Says:

    Amazing, astonishing, gobsmacking, over-the-top ...

That this is being censored by NBC should be trumpeted far and wide, held us as clear and concise evidence that America is fast approaching a bona fide, demonstrable state of fascism in terms of its governance, and the collusion therein by the likes of NBC, Fox, WaPo et al ..

But i guess that has been pretty evident for some time now, and those who don't want to see it or believe it will not be convinced by yet one more piece of clear evidence.

  15. c4logic Says:

It's time for the masks to come off. The war being waged in this country between the haves and the have-nots, is between the big corporations, and the common good. This is the source of American Fascism, and George Bush is just one of the pawns in their game. Until Americans begin to ask whose agenda is driving this country, and how are they expointing our fears, and our weakness, to advance their own corporate interests, no resistance will be possible. We are all serfs to them. They are the noblemen in the high castle.

  19. fishbrake Says:

This ad aired on Fox News last night, exactly as it is. I thought that was a brilliant move on the part of the Dixie Chicks - take the fight to the enemy! - and I'm surprised to hear NBC and CW aren't airing it.

But it aired on Fox News. Fair and balanced?

  20. Unholy+Moses Says:

So we should force NBC to put on TV what we say? Aren’t they allowed to do what they want?

    Yes.

But we have the right to blast them for not showing something based not on a longstanding policy like CBS's, but simply because the ad in question is critical of the President.

Last I checked, this was supposed to be America, not Cuba.

  21. clb72 Says:

Maybe Aaron Sorkin can get NBC into line. Insert some biting parody of the network into the next episode of Studio 60. Heads will roll. Roll.

  22. Larry+from+C Says:

  23. RUCerious Says:

My household is giving NBC a one week time-out.

  24. SouthwestBob Says:

Remember we have a president who does not tolerate bad news or criticism. With his newly acquired "war powers" it is simply a matter of time before "disparaging remarks" of the president will earn you a visit and detainment from the FBI. What a wonderful job our representatives have done to maintain our freedoms and they did so in fewer days than any other congress!

  25. TerrytheTurtle Says:

From BNF's post on the Thinkfast thread:

There is an interesting freedom of speech issue. Television networks receive government licenses to use portions of the ultraviolet spectrum to transmit their broadcasts. They are supposed to be content neurtral.

Entertainers, on the other hand, are not regulated. There is a difference.

NBC is exercising self-censorship solely on the grounds that it 'disparages the president'. What about ABC showing the Road to 9/11 which disparaged another president?

  26. OxyCon Says:

When was the last time any network ever refused to air a Republicon/right wing ad?
    Anyone?

  27. obsessed Says:

I can't say I care. Today's music sucks, I don't watch TV, and hollywood can't make an intelligent movie to save their lives. They hit my trifecta.

  31. Andy Says:

Uh... last time I checked TV isn't broadcast over ultraviolet. Electromagenetic, yes. UV, no.

  32. had enough Says:

Our country has been lost. We now live under a dictatorship no better than China or Cuba.

We're no longer allowed to "disparage" our president. Free speech is only allowed if it supports the Bush regime. Our media has become exclusively government approved propaganda while being labeled as "liberal" media.

I am now seriously worried about the election. Seems more likely that the new electronic voting machines will report more republican votes, because of course the voting machine companies wouldn't want to "disparage" the republican party by showing accurate vote counts.

  36. Keith Gore Wiseman Says:

Have NBC affiliates run the ads against Ford in Tennessee? Do they show Ann Coulter, who advocates killing Supreme Court Justices? Do they give voice to George Bush? It seems to me that NBC is selective about whom they are willing to offend. Not very good stewardship of their FCC license, I'd say.

  37. had+enough Says:

Something is really rotten in denmark...

ABC broadcasts path to 9/11 which distorts history. Defames officials by making up scenes and dialog which did not occur. Runs the movie for hours commercial free.

NBC refuses to accept money to run a advertisement which shows Bush's own words.

There is something very scary going on in the corporate world. Once the media becomes a puppet of a dictator, there is little the general population can do.

  38. katy Says:

  39. NewNameAcquired Says:

One protester wanted the Dixie Chicks to move to France...

Hey buddy, just like you - they are voicing an opinion. If YOU don't like freedom of speech, why don't YOU move to some place like North Korea?

If you're a devout Christian why not move to Rome where you can be close to the Vatican?

The whole point of being in America is having the freedom to speak what you wish, and the freedom to question and criticize OUR elected leader if we're not happy with his policies.

  40. Massachusetts_Liberal Says:

    Roger #7,

NBC is allowed to use the airwaves as long as the United Status Government, a/k/a, the people, allows them to. NBC has a license; it does not own them.

  41. joe+cantwell Says:

    nbc = nothing but cowards

  42. sistereinstein Says:

I am sure there are plenty of other networks that will run the ad.

    For Mr. JJ Commoner:

That this is being censored by NBC should be trumpeted far and wide, held us as clear and concise evidence that America is fast approaching a bona fide, demonstrable state of fascism in terms of its governance, and the collusion therein by the likes of NBC, Fox, WaPo et al ..

I think that you'll find that both Liberals and Conservative think we are heading towards that fascist state, due to either the restriction or the lack of. Libertarians believe we are already there.

When you want to point fingers...don't forget to include NOW, MoveOn, the universities, the Catholics, the Jewish, and don't forget to blame our parents too.

    sheesh.

  43. Pissed+Off Says:

    Roger x2

As usual thank you for my daily dose of laughter on the account of your miopic viewpoint.

When a corporation like NBC sends an army of lawyers to the courthouse to pursuade the judge to allow TV cameras into the court room because the press has the right to broadcast trial under the First Amendment, it cannot then turn around and deny that same right to an advertiser.

More importantly, NBC's actions help to prove that we no longer live in the democratically elected republic envisioned by Hamilton, Jefferson and the rest of the founding fathers.

In fact, Ben Frankilin's warning has come to pass; We had a republic as long as we kept it. Now we have a fascist state like Nazi Germany. I hope

I just hope your brown shirt is startched and pressed, your jackboots polished to a high gloss shine so when the call comes, you can run out like a the littel Nazi that you are and betray your inheritance from the Founding Fathers, the Constitution and the United States of America.

  44. duane peterson Says:

Love them chicks. Of course GE-owned NBC blew it. But let's get over expecting old media to report what matters. More importantly, let's always use such media mis-steps to our advantage. NBC's bungling here (like ABC's recent 9/11 doculamess) will do more to promote this documentary than a few ads on TV shows that fewer and fewer of us are watching. Progressive jui jitsu is what it's all about, using our opponents' weight against them. And hats off the the Dixie Chickes for creating music and now film that spread their message far more powerfully than the dying media dinosaurs do.

  45. Bluedog49 Says:

This point has been made a million times, but it bears repeating. A "liberal media" would not refuse to air a Dixie Chicks ad.

  46. Humanist Says:

    2xRoger,
Since you do not seem eager to contemplate the reality before your own eyes, I’ll attempt to clarify for you.

What NBC’s position represents is not them exercising their “right to free speech”. First off, they are a steward of the broadcast airwaves and cable bandwidth that they transmit over, not the owners of it. That concept alone requires some substantial thought and understanding. Take the time to do so.

Secondly, their reasoning for not accepting the ad is censorship. Now, if the ad contained nudity, then they would be only abiding by law. If the ad was deceptive and meant to criminally harm NBC’s viewers, then they would have a moral leg to stand on. However, the reason that they are not allowing the ad to run is that it could cause people to have bad thoughts about mr. george w bush.

Understand that in its entirety. NBC is censoring information not because it is false, not because it is misleading, and not because it is obscene. No, NBC will not run it because it may cause you to have unpleasant thoughts about your president, whether they are justified or not.

If you do not see how this is an offense to every free thinker in the world then you are neither free nor a thinker. The next steps on this path to hell that NBC is leading you on involve thought police and ministries of accepted practices and the sorts. If it is your choice to follow NBC on this path, then I hope that you enjoy the journey because I can assure you that you will not enjoy the destination. But don’t expect company on your path and it is the action of a petulant child to criticize others for not being willing to make the same mistake as you. Good luck to you on that.

May peace be with us all.

  47. Roger_Roger Says:

    #40,

But they decided to not air this peice as a business move. Many are very offended by these girls and would look down on NBC if they supported them. They simply decided that they would do better business by avioding them. They certainly could be wrong, but this is one of many tough business decisions they make everyday. Maybe enough of you will be upset by NBC that it will backfire and they will lose some shareholder value. It is the only thing that matters afterall.

  48. Austin+Fire Says:

Just another reason why NBC is at the bottom of the rating scale.
Nobody wants to watch their network.

Keep it up NBC and you will no longer be in business.

  49. Lee Says:

I think the remarks by Gov. Bush (I refuse to call him a president as there is a serious lack of credibility as to his really winning the elections) are so typical of the ignorance he displays, Regardles of what the "Dixie Chicks" said it is there right to express an opinion. In reality is there really any difference in what she said in what a lot Americans feel. In his crusades Bush has misled this country into a quagmire best likened to Vietnam.
A threat is made and it should be treated as such, if someone threatened his family belive me the secret service would be all over it. Look at the recent articles where a 14 year old child and some friends had a website with references to Bush and the visit the little girl got her school from two secret service agents. There is a big difference between what was said to the Dixie Chicks as to their safety and security and the incredibily ignorant statement from the Governor (President) Bush.
But then think again a law is rushed through congress to deny the right of due process to 'terrorists" detain them on whim and deny the right to face their accusers. its a shame that he views himself as "royalty" (his remarks as to wishing for America to be a dictatorship) and envisions his family as royals. His remarks and actions only show the arrogance of a bought and paid for politican, paid for by the Saudis and their objectives. If you expect George W. To care for the safety and security of women and their right to free speech , the look at the City of New Orleans and in the gulf of the thousands of homeless and displaced.
The sad part of all of this is the lip service Mr. Bush and his party gives to the concerns for our safety and security, the protection of our freedoms as not seeing the truth. A point that many of us realize and have seen as the truth disappears into the fallacy of Washington and in particular the words from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

  50. Bluedog49 Says:

Excuse me, Sister, but what in the wide world of sports does NOW or MoveON or any university or religion have to do with NBC refusing to air an ad for a liberal message? This is all about the corporate board of NBC. In fact everything about our mainstream media is related to their corporate boards. They're the BOSSES.

  51. jkelly Says:

    Dumb Chiks

No one gets it do they? It's not that they came out against the war and Bush. It's because they had the 'courage' to spit on their country in a foreign land. Have the damn honesty to do that in front of a home crowd.

  52. Bluedog49 Says:

Roger, irrespective of your lame excuses for the board of NBC, would you say this decision by them represents a conservative or a liberal mindset? Would you call these network bosses liberal or conservative?

  53. RUCerious Says:

Once again jkyjelly confuses the country with the president.

  54. nym@alias.net Says:

Many are very offended by these girls and would look down on NBC if they supported them

many more americans are offended that a founding and basic constitutional concept, being freedom of speech, is not being upheld on publicly licensed american airwaves.

  55. jkelly Says:

    RUCerious...

    your moniker befits your attitude!

my point - they did their 'dis-ing' in front of a warmly receptive European crowd. shows lack of courage.

  56. Susan Tampa Says:

They (MSNBC) can play that disgusting Repub Ford clip ad nauseum, but they can't play this??????

  57. Bluedog49 Says:

JKelly worships authority. In revolutionary times, she would be a Tory. She doesn't understand that in the United States, we do not worship a leader, we adhere to a process. When one is inducted into the armed forces, they do not take an oath to support the leader, they take an oath to support the constitution. And criticism of our government or leaders when we think they're wrong, according to the founders of our country, is a duty to all patriotic Americans. JKelly, just wise up!

  58. Bluedog49 Says:

    jkelly: "shows lack of courage"

It's hard to get someone who worships authority to understand something like this, but criticizing those in power is an act of courage. To sit there and stare off into space as your leaders shit all over the country - that shows a lack of courage.

  59. sistereinstein Says:

    Bluedog49

It relates to the issue of "Collusion". If my quoted poster is going to discuss who is colluding with our governent...it needs to be addressed that the networks aren't the only arena being courted to service political agendas.

Corporate Boards are everywhere...not just in the mainstream media, JJ Commoner is making broad sweeping gestures regarding the state of our governance....and I was stating that he (or she, I suppose) needs to be all inclusive when making such statements.

God, I hope that was clear enough.

  60. Citizen+Dad Says:

TP readers will appreciate that there are plenty of things TP doesn't want us to see, such as the pornographic excerpts from Jim Webb's novels. Hey, Judd, why don't you publish that "touching" expression of a father's "love" for his son, in Lost Soldiers (2001). I'm sure it's a real favorite with Barney Frank and Gerry Studds.

  61. JustJohn Says:

Come Nov 8th, I hope none of this matters. If there is a real beginning of a regime change, leave it to the investigations.
Worse administration ever and it will always be labeled as such in history.

    Bring it on......

  62. MakesYathink Says:

    jkelly,

Ever go to a concert? Know anything about them? Bands tour all across the world, ever think they we're in their European leg of the tour when all this went down. It's not like they flew over there, and set up special concert just to speak their mind.

  63. Humanist Says:

    jkelly,
The incident of which you speak, with an astounding lack of eloquence by the way, occurred where it did because of the timing, not because of location choice. The venue that the band was at is as irrelevant as your nonsensical ramblings.

Next you will criticize people for speaking in different states, or counties, or even to different races. Your argument is as shallow, it seems, as your understanding of speech itself.

If you want to call the Dixie Chicks cowards, then do so to their face and do so publicly. Otherwise, the only coward in the situation is you.

    Peace.

  64. Jay Randal Says:

Breaking News: blogactive.com outed Ken Mehlman as a closeted hypocrite Gay guy a short while ago > they found out he had a male lover in law school who he still sees occasionally > GOP party is run by a freaky guy who denigrates Gays, but is secretly homosexual himself!

  65. Bluedog49 Says:

Careful, Citizen Dad, you obviously (and typically) don't realize you're on shaky ground here. Lynn Cheney has written a book about a steamy lesbian love affair on the prarie. Among Bill O'Rielly's writings is this nugget: "OK Baby, put down that pipe and get my pipe up."

    Stone thower, meet glass house.

  66. nym@alias.net Says:

while these girls have always kept consistent message, using their american right to criticize bush, across the earth - the republican administration has changed the story for invading Iraq how many times?

wow, that takes a lot of courage for this republican administration to lie to the american public for the last six years.

almost as good as Hastert's lies to coverup all that republican underage child molestation.

  67. jkelly Says:

Of course, Bluedog, you make a common mistake that many liberal thinkers make. When someone disagrees with your position on something, you assume that person is in the opposite camp. Very common misconception. I hardly worship authority. If you care to know, my basic belief = big government bad. OK? I'm not saying DChiks can't say whatever is on their minds (however small they might be) on say it where ever they like As a matter of fact, I don't give a damn if their commercial is aired on ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX or any damn station. Fact is, I gave watching TV awhile ago.

My POINT -- to repeat to the point of repetition -- is that they should have shown some courage and said what they said in front of an AMERICAN crowd. They didn't - they did what they did in front of a warmly, receptive EUROPEAN crowd.

Why are having this discussion??? They're singers and from what I've heard from their mouths, hardly intellectuals.

  68. Jim in AZ Says:

I have been working with a company which develops and produces television programming. This is no fly-by-night operation; the head is a well-known member of the Television Academy. She and I had a discussion about a specific project a month or so ago. She relayed some information that was quite interesting. I paraphrase:

"There's a real climate of fear here. The networks only want something safe. It seems they're afraid of how politicians will regard their programming."

I see GE (NBC's) refusal as evidence of that climate of fear.

  69. Jason+Baddo Says:

Just remember "GE brings good things to life". Things like nuclear detonators, fighter jet engines and other tasteful delights to fuel the Bush "stay the course" policy. And now GE"s latest "good thing" is apparently censorship at its NBC unit designed not to offend the overmaster but to endlessly please him.

  70. Marty Says:

Uh- anyone here smelling a publicity stunt?

The ad airs on Fox but supposedly not on NBC or the CW (which has already denied the charge.)

  71. JesusChrist_GodOfWAR Says:

#3 - Mussolini said fascism is corporations executing state policy.

Is it just me, or does it feel a little Third Reich-y thse past 6 years?

Mussolini would know what he was talking about! Indeed, fascism is corporations executing state policy.

Welcome to the Rise of the Fourth Reich!

  72. Humanist Says:

    jkelly,
Here's what you don't understand - Nobody needs your approval or agreement to say anything. Welcome to “free speech”.

The Dixie Chicks said what they said and did so publicly and openly. You are slandering them from the shadows and you cannot even see how that not only immediately discredits you, but also makes you the only coward in this situation.

Now, you'll have to forgive me because I have to leave to perform some research to see if your statement "My POINT — to repeat to the point of repetition —" is actually the stupidest thing ever uttered like I believe it to be.

    Peace.

  73. jkelly Says:

As a matter of fact -- Bluedog --- one big reason I could never be a liberal is because of my inate distrust of big government. And, liberals by and large are great believers of Big Government, Nanny Government, The Government that solves all the problems. I happen to think the simplist thinker in the country makes better decisions than all the apparatus of government put together. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  74. Grand+Moff+Texan Says:

And, liberals by and large are great believers of Big Government, Nanny Government, The Government that solves all the problems.

Considering the growth of the federal government under Nixon, Reagan, and Bush II, you've been had.

Next you'll be talking about liberal activist judges. Any other bullshit you enjoy swallowing?

    Pathetic.
    .

  75. Yikes Says:

"And, liberals by and large are great believers of Big Government, Nanny Government, The Government that solves all the problems. I happen to think the simplist thinker in the country makes better decisions than all the apparatus of government put together. Put that in your pipe and smoke it."

Someone has lost the FACT that the repukes have created a MONSTER government with NO checks and balances. Funny, you do have the simplist (your spelling) thinker in the highest office. HAHAHAHAHA

  76. Sparhawk Says:

I find it hilarious that NBC won't air this commerical because .."they are disparaging to President Bush.." yet this same network airs Sat. Night Live which has been ripping presidents since 1975... You just can't make this stuff up...

  77. Grand+Moff+Texan Says:

My POINT — to repeat to the point of repetition — is that they should have shown some courage and said what they said in front of an AMERICAN crowd.

Then you missed the point of their speech, which means you have no point. They were addressing a European crowd because of the reception they got there. As for an American audience, their entire new album does that.

The sad thing is that you actually think you can think.
    .

  78. jkelly Says:

    humanist::::

you said::::: Here’s what you don’t understand - Nobody needs your approval or agreement to say anything. Welcome to “free speech”.

I said I don't give a damn what they say is what I saying. That they do or don't need my approval was never inferred by my comment.

  79. Citizen+Dad Says:

Judd and TP don't want anyone to see this excerpt from Jim Webb's Lost Soldiers (2001):

"A shirtless man walked toward them along a mud pathway. His muscles were young and hard, but his face was devastated with wrinkles. His eyes were so red that they appeared to be burned by fire. A naked boy ran happily toward him from the little plot of dirt. The man grabbed his young son in his arms, turned him upside down, and put the boy's penis in his mouth."

Artistic license is one thing, but this passage is a literary milestone that any Democratic Senate candidate ought to be proud of, don't you think? I wonder what Virginia voters will think?

I think Jim Webb should follow Mark Foley's example and resign honorably, albeit in disgrace.

  80. jkelly Says:

Grand+Moff+Texan ---------------- Typical Trash Talk from a liberal. Can't keep it civil.

  81. Bluedog49 Says:

Sister: "Corporate Boards are everywhere…not just in the mainstream media.."

Irrelevant. These particular corporate boards, the ones which control all our major networds, are censoring opinion, and in doing so, they are violating the spirit of our agreement with them in which they get free use of our public airwaves.

  82. Grand+Moff+Texan Says:

And now jkelly changes the subject to civility. Yes, it's typical liberal talk: I'm right and you're whining. Come back when you grow a pair, you whiny little bitch.

You'll blame conservative excesses on liberals because you don't know any better. You'll fault the Dixie Chicks because you don't know what they said.

You've been had. Someone's just using your dumb ass, get it? The only thing that makes you useful is that you spout someone else's bullshit.

    Pathetic.
    .

  83. Humanist Says:

    jkelly,
No, you're attempting to tell the Dixie Chicks what they can say and where they can say it. That is the whole basis for your "argument". It's quite remarkable that you are so confused about what it is that you are saying.

And just so you know, my research shows that your earlier comment of “My POINT — to repeat to the point of repetition —” ranks in the top 100 of the stupidest things uttered by humans. Congratulations on such a dubious honor.

    Peace.

  84. Bluedog49 Says:

JKelly: "As a matter of fact — Bluedog — one big reason I could never be a liberal is because of my inate distrust of big government. And, liberals by and large are great believers of Big Government, Nanny Government, The Government that solves all the problems. I happen to think the simplist thinker in the country makes better decisions than all the apparatus of government put together. Put that in your pipe and smoke it."

First, republicans have run congress for 12 years and the executive branch for 6 years and now we have the biggest government in the Nation's history. Our government is a "nanny" for large corporations, doing their every bidding. Why would congress enact a law which makes it illegal for citizens to get together and bargain for lower drug prices?? Because the government is a "Nanny" for large pharma corporations.

Second, all you're doing is what many christians do today: glorifying simple-mindedness. What do all those educated people know anyway. Give me a guy who can't even put a simple sentence together. Since I'm an idiot, I trust an idiot.

Artistic license is one thing, but this passage is a literary milestone that any Democratic Senate candidate ought to be proud of, don’t you think? I wonder what Virginia voters will think?

They already know that he saw it in person. That's why he wrote about it, he saw it happen.

Your talking-points have already expired, dipshit. Go back to Hannity and get some new ones.

I think Jim Webb should follow Mark Foley’s example and resign honorably, albeit in disgrace.

    Comment by Citizen+Dad

That would make it easier for Macaca to run on the record he doesn't have, right? Republicans: transparent, simple, and stupid.

    jkelly,

Ahh the ole switch tactics instead of admitting YOU'RE WRONG. we debunked your "dixie chicks are cowards for saying that on foreign soil" to Liberals love big, nanny governments. 30 trillion or some dollars in DEBT.. 'You are a fool!

The bush administration has created the largest govt ever. Nanny govt like someone telling you how to live your life when you're parents aren't home? Leave the parenting to parents.(but give them help, ie education, health care, day care assistance) Get out of peoples personal lives, ie domestic wire tapping, gay marriage, want to save face on marriage fix the 50% divorce rate.

In the 50's - 90's we had communist Russia with nukes, tanks, planes, air force, navy, a nation truly capable of destroying the USA. Why are you so willing to give up freedoms to a few cave dwelling terrorists?? those same freedoms we enjoyed during commie red fear. I don't even think there's one Islamic in congress, so they wont regulate Christianity away from you. Why are you so willing to allow all this crap going on now with NSA surveillance, Habeus Corpus for a few terrorists? Because you're chickensh1t cowards.

  87. nym@alias.net Says:

Hey dumbass, talk to the Dixie Chicks about "civil." They'll tell you some scary stories about how your conservative friends have reacted to their criticism of their dear leader.

  89. jkelly Says:

    Yikes:

You said, Someone has lost the FACT that the repukes have created a MONSTER government with NO checks and balances. Funny, you do have the simplist (your spelling) thinker in the highest office. HAHAHAHAHA

Once again, typical. First the putdown and trashtalk. Yea, I misspelled. Why don't you spell-check everyone's comments?

Any, you too, make the common liberal thinking mistake - anyone who doesn't agree with you is put directly in the opposing camp. If you read my posts you see, even though I might not agree with YOU, I'm not agreeing with the republican side. I'll grant you that Bush has increased government, but do you really believe in your heart of hearts a Democrat administration will downsize.

Ahh but your problem is the bigger govt created by this administration doesn't do anything to protect, and or serve it's people. It's been enlarged to create more war based jobs for cronies, and more contracts for those that support them.

I am tried of my tax dollars, and future dollars going to pay for a war that we just can't win.

Why is the country so willing to go into debt over death, and not making peoples lives better? That's what governments are for. Not to made bigger to spy on how many calls someone makes, to where.

And larger we will always need larger governments as our population grows, but a larger govt should be for the good of the people, and the world. Not to get every country hating you.

  97. Humanist Says:

    Citizen+Dad,
Please list your qualifications as a literary critic. I am also interested in your level of formal education received in literature studies.

I have to assume that you are qualified in the area of literature because only a moron would offer up the vague criticisms that you do without having a substantial literary argument to back it up.

Now, as far as Mr. Webb’s qualifications for the senate, I would like to know specifically how you feel that his literary skills factor into such. Please be specific and do not provide random quotes lifted from his book. That approach would be both amateurish and silly. I would hope that you would prefer to avoid such childish behavior.

    Peace.

  98. jkelly Says:

JKelly, do you base your opinions on facts or feelings? If you are fact-based, then you can just go back and look at the last administration run by democrats. During the 8 years of the Clinton administration, the size of government DECREASED and the budget was BALANCED. During the previous 12 years of administrations run by Rebubs, the size of government INCREASED and the budget was sent into a tailspin.

Those are facts, JKelly. Do facts mean anything to you at all?

Hey, Judd, why don’t you publish that “touching” expression of a father’s “love” for his son, in Lost Soldiers (2001). I’m sure it’s a real favorite with Barney Frank and Gerry Studds.

    Two things:

    1. McCain seemed to love the book.

    2. The book was actually written in 1982. At the time Webb was actually a Republican.

So, you agree that the Dixie Chicks, just like any free person, can say what they want where they want. Okay, now that’s established.

But, now you call them cowards because of “where” they said something. More importantly, though, you are privately and through a cloak of anonymity calling the Dixie Chicks cowards for making a public statement. The fact that they were in the UK is as irrelevant as the fact that you and I are in different physical locations right now.

The coward here is you. Either confront them in public and directly or accept that designation which you foist upon yourself. It is your right to disagree, but it will never be your right to dismiss them or slander them.

If you cannot see this then you need to re-insert yourself into the education system and focus on your constitution, bill or rights, and the basic premises of freedom.

    Peace.

  114. Torch Says:

    Citizen Dad -

Scooter Libby wrote explicit sexual content about bestiality. (Specifically about adults putting pre-pubescent girls in animal cages to be raped so they'd make better prostitutes.) Webb, unlike Scooter, is an accomplished writer whose work is less driven by revolting fantasy (like Scooter's), and more reflective of what he has been exposed to through life experience.

While Webb may not have first hand experience with what is described in the paragraph you quote, it doesn't mean that what is described isn't taking place every day right here in America.

Don't try imposing your fear-driven, detached-from-reality, holier-than-thou agenda on the rest of us. Republicans are widely recognized as being unable to handle the truth. And incapable of living within the confines of the moral codes they seek to legislate to all.

  127. John In Missouri Says:

The right wing fascists in this country claim to be on the side of freedom, but in reality they only believe in freedom for those who agree with them. Bush has made that clear with his "you are either with us or against us" mantra. Yes, the Dixie Chicks are victims of American fascism because it is the corporate controlled and consolodated media that is trying to silence them.
I have decided to personally give the "Stepford Kool-Aid Drinkers" 4 choices when they make ridiculous right wing comments in front of me. I would hope everyone here would follow my lead. Those choices are: 1)Debate me on the issues and make an ass of yourself when you find that hollow "talking points" have nothing to do with reality. 2)Get into a physical altercation with me and find out the hard way that not being "with" the Republinazis does not make you a p@ssy. 3)If you whole heartedly believe all the propaganda and think you can beat me one-on-one with the first two choices then you should really consider enlisting in the armed services because they really need easily programmable, totally loyal, angry people who are ready for a fight. (I might add my little brother is serving in the Marines in Iraq and I will be glad to give you his recruiter's phone number). The final choice: 4)Educate yourself on the issues, agree to disagree, and help us turn this country around. I can guarantee them the fourth choice is the only one they can't loose with! Those on the right prefer to silence any opposition instead of debating the issues. That is why they avoid talking about policy and go directly to personal attacks. We all need to "NOT shut up, and sing the songs from our hearts and minds!"

You have a serious problem understanding that your opinion is NOT a fact.

Musical taste is SUBJECTIVE. Just like all forms of art. To say that one style is or isn't good is simply a matter of taste - not fact.

    Sheesh...

Of which you post no facts, just your opinion.

The reality is that most people with no education and most people with higher secondary education consider themselves liberal. This means most people without a high school diploma vote Democrat, while most people with a Matser's degree and.or a PhD also vote Democrat.

Those without a high school education tend to be liberal because they KNOW what it's like to be disadvantaged, hungry, oppressed, etc. And those who are highly educated can SEE what it's like to be disadvantaged, hungry, oppressed, etc.

This is not my opinion, because it is backed up by FACTS and not opinions.

So now you can explain to me how that particular quote that you provided was both obligatory and outside of the fabric of the story line.

That's your issue, not mine. I'm only wondering how the passage will play with Virginia voters? I'm pretty sure they won't spend much time trying to figure out "how that particular quote . . . was both obligatory and outside of the fabric of the story line." This passage may get Jim Webb a few extra book sales among Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco perverts, but I doubt it will get him many votes in Old Dominion.

Beings the literary expert that you portray yourself as being you would then know that both these qualifications would need to be met in order for the “pornographic” label to be applied.

Oh, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that, fiction or not, this description of a father's "touching love" for his son will be considered pornographic by Virginia voters. That's not what they mean by "Virginia is for lovers."

We now get all of our news and entertainment from the internet and rental DVDs. We don't miss broadcast TV at all. She was pissed (and ahead of the curve too) about Bush and Iraq and vented her feelings where she was performing. Freedom of Expression: Is There a Difference Between Speech and Press

Utilization of the single word “expression” to reach speech, press, petition, association, and the like, raises the central question of whether the free speech clause and the free press clause are coextensive; does one perhaps reach where the other does not? It has been much debated, for example, whether the “institutional press” may assert or be entitled to greater freedom from governmental regulations or restrictions than are non–press individuals, groups, or associations. Justice Stewart has argued: “That the First Amendment speaks separately of freedom of speech and freedom of the press is no constitutional accident, but an acknowledgment of the critical role played by the press in American society. The Constitution requires sensitivity to that role, and to the special needs of the press in performing it effectively.” But as Chief Justice Burger wrote: “The Court has not yet squarely resolved whether the Press Clause confers upon the ‘institutional press’ any freedom from government restraint not enjoyed by all others.”

The right wing fascists in this country claim to be on the side of freedom, but in reality they only believe in freedom for those who agree with them. Bush has made that clear with his “you are either with us or against us” mantra. Yes, the Dixie Chicks are victims of American fascism because it is the corporate controlled and consolodated media that is trying to silence them.
I have decided to personally give the “Stepford Kool-Aid Drinkers” 4 choices when they make ridiculous right wing comments in front of me. I would hope everyone here would follow my lead. Those choices are: 1)Debate me on the issues and make an ass of yourself when you find that hollow “talking points” have nothing to do with reality. 2)Get into a physical altercation with me and find out the hard way that not being “with” the Republinazis does not make you a p@ssy. 3)If you whole heartedly believe all the propaganda and think you can beat me one-on-one with the first two choices then you should really consider enlisting in the armed services because they really need easily programmable, totally loyal, angry people who are ready for a fight. (I might add my little brother is serving in the Marines in Iraq and I will be glad to give you his recruiter’s phone number). The final choice: 4)Educate yourself on the issues, agree to disagree, and help us turn this country around. I can guarantee them the fourth choice is the only one they can’t loose with! Those on the right prefer to silence any opposition instead of debating the issues. That is why they avoid talking about policy and go directly to personal attacks. We all need to “NOT shut up, and sing the songs from our hearts and minds!”

My point has been made quite clear here! All I have read are hollow talking points and personal attacks from those on the right. I also see none of them are requesting a real debate, fight, or the phone number of a military recruiter. Nobody wants to agree to disagree either? NBC does have the right to deny advertising, however we, (and I am not a true liberal so generalizations do not apply here), have the right to point out the hypocrisy of their reasoning for doing so. My only hope is that the Dixie Chicks read these posts and know that their fans and supporters are intelligent and true patriots. I am late returning from my lunchbreak so I will check back later to see if the discourse has "improved" or if the "wingnut" stereotype prevails.

That's not saying that you aren't a bad dad or that Mr. Webb isn't the immoral crook that you suggest he is. 207. Marion Delgado Says:

The comments here are proof that fascists hate the Dixie Chicks, which is not news. So, fascists, you're wasting your keystrokes.

Just to make it clear, what fascist liars like Roger_Roger are hoping you won't grasp is that federal muscle - as in violent force - is used by the FCC to make sure, say, a local progressive station doesnt telecast on the same frequency the local NBC affiliate uses. In return, the licensee is supposed to provide public service content - to repay taxpayers and citizens for the taking they have made, to the tune of millions or tens of millions of dollars a year, from the public. Since Reagan, the networks and affiliates have illegally disregarded that obligation, yet the FCC has not recognized this breach of contract and allowed the public to jam the networks to enforce our property rights as taxpayers and citizens with individual action. Instead, the FCC has used IRS-collected tax money to fund law enforcement that shuts down low power stations, pirate stations, etc., yet refuses to enforce the signed, contracted obligations of the rich network and affiliate owners.

The fascists are, as a group, mentally and sexually twisted people with a strong hunger for perversity and the Satanism they see everywhere because they crave it. Nothing gives them more pleasure than to twist and abuse concepts like free speech (when the real issue is government-enforced exclusion of all but one voice from a commons that is technically available to anyone with a transmitter). It's their form of Black Mass.

They will do this even when it gets them in the neck, because the sadomasochistic thrill of destroying the good trumps even their physical or economic self interest.

All that does is make a person angry & causes him or her to "dig in" to their attitude, no matter how absurd it may be.

The time that was wasted writing this vitriol could have been used much more effectively. Those of you who have the advantage of a higher intelligence should be able to see that people who have been brain-washed, by the schools, by their parents, by the media & quite effectively by their churches (in many cases) are going to have a really difficult time seeing the truth: Take a lesson from Ghandi or for that matter from Jesus...extend your hand & offer help in understanding what a mess this country has become...it is truly "Corporate Nation & to hell with the rest of us..."

The brainwashed (or are they braindead?) masses who follow Bush and Republican party without question are just like the alcoholic. Until they themselves see the error of their ways, they cannot be changed -- your kindness, your offer to help, or your understanding will not make these people come around or understand the error of their ways, particularly the assholes (sorry, they are assholes) who come to this site to spew their Bush-sponsored hate and lies. These people may be beyond help at this point. Liberals have been way too understanding of this bunch for way too long. Now is the time to fight. Fighting isn't pretty, but in this case, it's necessary. These people, Republicans, crazy Christians, right wing whackos need to be stopped now before they ruin this country. And they are not going to be stopped if we caudle them. They need to slapped upside the head until they wake up.

  234. weird Says:

NBC is 80% owned by GE, who has huge investments in weapons manufacturing. They are a for profit corporation who recieves the majority of funding from other corporations. Why people are still caught off guard by this, or the fact that the networks rarely have a truly left wing voice on air, is beyond me. Would you expect McDonalds to mention in one of their commercials the negative health effects are of its food? You can't expect any progressive change in this country without, at least, outward hostility from the media to that change.

  235. weird Says:

"At least when we go home and turn on the TV there will be one less mindless entertainment choice"...and yet if we asked you to articulate your opposition to their stances on issues, that was logical and fact based, you'd probably stand there with a dumb, blank look on your face and come up with some mindless platitude. 237. weird Says:

They're mindless idiot sheep, led around emotionally by people much smarter than them who benefit off of their ignorance. 243. David Sakharov Says:

    Great quote there Terry Turtle!!

    You, too RUCerious!

Pretyy sweeping, JC, that we should ALL grow up and get a job. What about those of us who have been working for the last 40 years so a little snot-rag like you can have the freedom to complain on the internet about true patriots, descendants of those other patriots who "dissed" the king and then fought a war for those freedoms of yours. Your remarks illuminate your obvious lack of historical education. Patriotism is not about blindly following the inane rhetoric of a failed leader but having the courage to say the rhetoric is inane and attempting to stop that leader from unilateral action. We VOTE here!
It is the will of the people. not the government and certainly not a corporation!

And if you don't like what's on your TV then change the channel, but don't enforce that channel change onto anyone else. While NBC has every right as a business to refuse to air an ad if they wish, it probably was not too smart to say why. It is true, however, that NBC (or anyone else for that matter) actually own the airwaves and since most people get their news from television (another sad fact-news in sound-bite nano seconds instead of in depth and with opposing viewpoints) and when corporations begin deciding what is "news" it doesn't take long to get to the point where the American people will simply NOT be allowed to know anything that a parnoid government (read "Multi-National Corporation") doesn't want them to. That point, by the way, IS Fascism.

The reality here is that NBC, who doesn't really have a politcal opinion, is simply afraid of their own government and the unlikely but possible loss of revenue they may incur and rather than succumb to the fear that they could offend that govenment or it's representative, they cower in a corner and say "Yassuh, Massuh!" and fail to serve THEIR customers ( the over 70% of americans who have to PAY for their TV).

Mostly, the problem I see with all these arguments is that everyone has become so polarized by the political pap that comes from our elected officials (and those that would be elected) and polarizers like Coulter and Oberman that they don't see (or know or learn) past their own myopic view to find the synergistic solution to problems which is rarely, if ever, either RED or BLUE.

It's not about growing up, JC, it's about evolution and whether or not you believe in that, it's going to happen anyway. The trick is to become part of it, one with it, and help it, and humanity, along.

Your stay here is short. "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem".

    Eldridge Cleaver

    Sakharov

  244. weird Says:

Sakharov, I don't think the media should have the power to choose what makes it on the air. That power in and of itself is anti-democratic, it's different than any other industry in the country. NBC also "chooses" to not honestly analyze NAFTA, our healthcare system and compare it to others, our educational system (which is reflected in the decisions we make as a country) amongst other things. The media’s job is not to make a profit it is to inform the public, to give them FACTS, which has no bias. WE, you and I, own the airwaves, we ALLOW NBC to broadcast. If they aren’t educating us, and allowing us to make truly informed decisions, which is needed in a democracy, they have no right to exist. They’re not fulfilling their ONLY function, and it isn’t profit.
Regarding the polarization, the country is politically polarized, but on many issues (outside of partisan debates which I could care less about) they're pretty much in agreement. They want, by wide margins, universal healthcare (even if it raises taxes), to tackle global warming, to have a functioning transparent democracy, to curb corporate power, to fully fund public education, to end deals like NAFTA, amongst other things. The problem is that neither party is calling for many of these issues, as a matter of fact when those points of view are voiced on the corporate stations (for reasons I addressed above) they’re called “radical” and “fringe” stances.

But they are both Sunni and Shia so I guess since it isn't personal that is ok?

  272. fred_smith_1313 Says:

We the US has killed 650,000 or has 650,000 been killed since the war started?

I thought that most of that was the Sunni & Shia still killing each other.

War is very personal. Ask the Sunni & Shia if you don't think so.

No it is not "all right" by any stretch of the imagination that anyone has been killed.

If I had my way the world would be filled with peace loving folks and no one would kill anyone else ever.

Now back to the real world. I would rather have some sort of government in place that at least was put there by a majority of their people while attempting to preserve their Civil rights.

Silly me. I happen to like Elected Representative Democratic Republics.

  273. JPark Says:

fred, the war we started caused 650,000 deaths. Your semantics don't change that.

  274. JPark Says:

Now back to the real world. I would rather have some sort of government in place that at least was put there by a majority of their people while attempting to preserve their Civil rights.

I don't think you went back far enough. You aren't in the real world. They are going to have a shia dominated government. You think the sunnis and kurds are going to enjoy Civil rights?

  275. fred_smith_1313 Says:

    JPark, we invaded Kuwait?

  276. fred_smith_1313 Says:

I am in the real world. Been there for years. I am a native American that lives in a country settled by White Europeans using Black Buffalo soldiers to finally supplant the native population.

No matter what we do the Sunnis, Kurds, Jews, Christians & Shia in Iraq are not going to get along. I can hope that if we stupid Americans could set a good example and with our assistance we could help them have at least a small chance of having a good government.

I don't believe it but I do hope.

Remember "good" and "government" do not play well in the same sentence.

  277. John M Says:

Matt Lauer Is a BBL (Bush Ball Licker) anyway.

NBC has shitty shows, horrible news and now I guess censorship.

  278. JPark Says:

#326 What are you talking about? Join the 21st century already.

  279. JPark Says:

No matter what we do the Sunnis, Kurds, Jews, Christians & Shia in Iraq are not going to get along

Sooooo, why are we still in Iraq?

  280. JPark Says:

Tolrick, fed up? Go away. If you don't like it, don't read it. Is it that difficult?

  281. fred_smith_1313 Says:

I thought we were attempting to help them install a goverment that would give the people of Iraq a voice.

What do you think we are doing?

  282. JPark Says:

#333 Hmm, that is a good one. Give WHO a voice and how well is it going?

  283. fred_smith_1313 Says:

#333 Hmm, give the people of Iraq a voice. All of them. The Sunnis, Shia, Jews, Christians & Kurds.

As far as how well is it going I would say actually better than I ever thougth it would but not near as well as it should.

    What would your solution be?

By the way did we invade Kuwait?

  284. fred_smith_1313 Says:

    #331

Why we are still in Iraq?

    We won the war. Again.

After you win a war you get to do whatever you want to do in the country you have defeated. Not really rocket science is it?

We stayed in Germany and Japan for many years after we defeated them. Actually Japan is still legally considered a military protectorate of the US.

Is this a Bizarre world or what?

  285. JPark Says:

#335 No, you are mistaken. That is NOT and never has been one of our goals.

  286. JPark Says:

Fred, that is insane. We invaded, which was successful, kinda like 1991. However, Bushie decided to go ahead and occupy Iraq. Why? Who knows. But he doesn't seem to be doing much of anything now. What exactly are we doing there?

  287. JPark Says:

#335 No, we did not invade Kuwait. Our embassador gave Saddam the ok to invade Kuwait.

  288. fred_smith_1313 Says:

337 - So what are our goals?

  289. fred_smith_1313 Says:

339 - You are correct. Our stupid moronic embassador gave Saddam the OK. What moron appointed her?

  290. JPark Says:

    #340 Darn good question Fred!!!

  291. JPark Says:

#341 Does it matter who appointed her? On whose orders did she allow the invasion?

  292. fred_smith_1313 Says:

    Actually Clinton appointed her.

  293. fred_smith_1313 Says:

338 - What's insane? We under the UN drove Iraq out of Kuwait. We under the UN stopped where we were told to stop. Yes it was an invasion. So what?

After years of daily and weekly low-grade conflict, remember Iraq kept shooting at the coalition planes in the no fly zones, we finally took out the uncooperative loosing regime in Baghdad.

That's what you do in a war. It is called winning. Our biggest shame was that we let Saddam stay in power in the first place.

Now we are attempting reconstruction. That process in the past took more than 8 years in Japan and 12 in Germany. So we should give up and go home after 4?

  294. fred_smith_1313 Says:

So now back to the actual thread.

NBC is a business and can pertty well do whatever that it wants to do. If they don't want to play the Dixie Chicks ad they don't have to.

It was an ad, not news. Get over it.

NBC could have learned from the Dixie Chicks that you can't offend your mainly conservative fan base and expect to sell to them any more.

Maybe NBC realises that and doesn't want to offend the same folks?

  295. JPark Says:

Fred, you keep bringing up 1991. Despite the Bush I admin practically begging for it they did it right. And Clinton kept Saddam under wraps and weak. What is the point of Junior's war?

  296. JPark Says:

Fred, the point is they didn't make a "business" decision. They stated that they wouldn't run it because it was disparaging to the POTUS. What does that tell you about their news operation?

  297. JPark Says:

I have to give it to you though, Fred. At least you are not claiming a liberal bias. If you were a righty troll, you never would have made the argument that NBC is a conservative leaning outlet.

  298. fred_smith_1313 Says:

It was a business decision by NBC. All marketing is about business decisions no matter how the markenting folks attempt to paint the picture or shout "pay no attention to the man behind the curtian".

See, they have already gotten their conservative base back on their side.

  299. JPark Says:

Ok, Fred. I cannot refute that. If they are courting the right-wing base then they did exactly the right thing (business-wise). Not sure how they expect to compete with Fox with the righties though. There are only so many conservatives.

  300. fred_smith_1313 Says:

349 - Not really sure how to read that one. I think that my feelings might be hurt.

  301. fred_smith_1313 Says:

351 - Hey, market share is market share. When you are in a battle for a limited market you do what you can.

  302. fred_smith_1313 Says:

347 - I don't keep bringing up 1991. It is the same war, against the same people with an Armistice thrown into the middle and 3 different US Presidents along for the ride.

My problem is that you can't partially win a war. That's like almost smoking pot or being a little pregnant. You either did it or you didn’t.

Even though Saddam was driven out of Kuwait he was not really defeated in his own mind. Leaving him in power thinking that he had stopped the worlds combined might was a really bad idea.

The only problem was that finishing the job was not really much better as we can all see now.

I know that this might be a little funny but my dad tells a story.

His father owned a lumberyard when he was growing up he “got” to work there for free. As you can imagine he got more than one splinter from working with the wood. Some were quite bad. One of the old hands in the yard very calmly told him that he only really has one choice.

He can either suffer the pain now and get it out or he could let it get infected and if he ignored it long enough his hand would have to be removed. One way or another the splinter would come out.

The problem we have with Iraq is really the same as the one we have with Korea.

The real question is when will we take care of the problem? Hopefully before it destroys us.

Goodnight and thanks for the conversation.

[...] Posted: Friday, October 27, 2006 9:49 PM by Will Femia "Bloggers are being asked to show their support for freedom of expression by Amnesty International." Of course, you have to actually be able to view blogs in order for them to convey any kind of message. Speaking of stuff you can't view, I'm surprised to read that NBC is blocking the Dixie Chicks' movie ad because it's too disparaging of the president.  Um, NBC guys?  Have you seen the Olbermann show?  The Chicks were on Hardball the other day, but managed to talk about their story without much Bush bashing.  Their pet issue seems to be media consolidation.  You can view the ad here.  The official site here. Speaking of President Bush, check out this cool toy.  You drag the words from the bank into the speech pane to play a speech in President Bush's voice.  Notice that the bank has multiple tabs.  It takes some work to find pieces that make a coherent sentence, but it's better than the more common soundboards we usually see. Concept Art is a community of fantasy artists workshopping each others' work.  It looks like they do theme contests like they do on Worth 1000 too.  NOTE:  In the course of clicking I did see a pair of bare breasts.  Not uncommon in fantasy art, but probably uncommon in your workplace.  Take heed. Neighboroo puts demographic data on an interactive map.  My New York City neighbors should avoid clicking the air quality index.  Yeesh! 13 Greatest horror movies ever.  This is a pretty good list, but one that I'd sneak on there is the original (Dutch I think) version of The Vanishing.  That was a mind blower. The Michael J. Fox ad technique only works if your opponent is actually against stem cell research.  Duh. Today's thing the world didn't need:  deep fried pizza (reportedly tastes good). Lamborghini Gallardo vs. Ducati 999 - I guessed this one right. How a Massachusetts carpenter got the highest Scrabble score ever.  This is what it would sound like if Scrabble matches were televised and announced by a color commentator. This ad looks like it was made in response to our look last week at sexy-themed women's costumes.  NOTE:  Contains a couple loud curses.  The joke is "sexy."  There's no nudity and it's not too lurid, but y'know, use your judgment at work.  Also, clicking around the host site might find some actual NSFW material.  OK, now click. (Bill Maher is making jokes about this on this week's Real Time as I write this. [Just before he goes on a scathing Olbermann-esque tear about America not being number 1 -- look for that one to go viral soon.]) Speaking of oversexed costumes, a British supermarket caused a bit of a scandal for including a stripper pole in the toy section of its Web site. Speaking of pole dancing, a new Popular Science blog analyzes the physics of that video of the pole dancing girl who falls on her head.  Interesting to note that a YouTube link on this entry had to be removed for copyright reasons. Speaking of removing stuff from YouTube, apparently they've pulled all the Comedy Central content, including Daily Show and South Park clips.  Hopefully Comedy Central is picking up the slack and improving their own video offerings. "Let's put this in terms crude enough for all cyber-dwellers to grasp. The Internet sucks."  The main point is that the Internet isn't living up to its early billing. "While it takes a critical mass of users to make these sites work, having too many users alienates some, especially when they attract an ever-growing cacophony of advertising and in some cases, spam."  I have often argued that community doesn't scale.  The more people who join in, the noisier it gets, the faster the quality drops.  As it happens, I received an e-mail on this very subject not long ago: Dear Will,Have you ever clicked anything offering advice on how to keep the MySpace floozies away? Recently I checked my e-mail and had over thirty friend requests and/or messages from women who are clearly just trying to get people to sign up for their porn sites or webcam shows. This is just ridiculous. Seems every time a new means of communication is invented some ass thinks up a way to harass people with advertising they don't want to see. Thanks,SwordBuddha The only advice I can think of is to find a smaller community. Speaking of MySpace floozies, Jessica Simpson reportedly keeps a profile under a different name and actively socializes with it.  That makes MySpace socializing such a bizarre lottery, the skeptic in my wonders if the whole thing is a MySpace advertising gambit. Speaking of odd lotteries, there's a penny worth $500 out there somewhere. But speaking of looking at pop stars on MySpace, did you know that Video Code Zone is the third most popular video sharing site by MySpace members?  After YoutTube and Myspace, more than Google. Google had better watch out or its name may instead become synonymous with petty pedantry.  Put another way, stick it in your Google. [...]

  307. Phaedrus Says:

People aren't splinters and war can never be again be waged "successfully". The problem with your generation is WW2. It was perhaps in the history of the world the only truly justifiable war. At least it seems that way when you view it as a separate conflict and not as a continuation of the previous one(s) Anyway my point is that war, especially modern war, is as destructive to the army that wages it as to those it is waged upon. Case in point "Gulf War Syndrome", which is commonly though not officially attributed to depleted uranium weaponry. Read up on it, the disability figures are available.
The causes of our wars are not "madmen" or "religious zealots", though there are plenty of both around. It is the continuous manufacture of weapons of war. It is the only industry in which the rest of the world cannot even begin to approach our dominance. It is our lifeblood and has been understood to be so since the mass production required for ww2 pulled us out of the "great depression" otherwise known as the end of actual capitalism. Anyway its hard to argue a point with people who don't understand history. I would urge you to get away from mainstream history and begin to understand the great tides that have always kept large numbers of people subservient to a small number, and the struggle of the oppressed to share in the limited resources of this planet. Do so and you will begin to understand the true and actual history of the unsung millions who have died merciless deaths at the hands of boys who were given guns by old men and taught how to kill their brothers and sisters in the name of this nation or that, but in reality to protect the control over resources. The same resources that the control over allowed the ruling oligarchy, monarchy, dictator, president etc. to control the majority to begin with.
You argue we live in a free society and I ask you why no major media outlet reported the uncontested fact that the exit polling from the 2004 elections proves that somehow and someway the election was tampered with. Its not contested; it simply goes away. The biggest lie is the easiest because few have the balls to look it in the eye and face the consequence of living in the real world.
Read some Zinn and some Chomsky, realize that today UNICEF estimates that 30,000 children under 5 will die because they have no food, shelter, clothing or medicine. That the true cause of terrorism could be solved if only we provided the world not with guns and tanks, but education and food.

NBC is owned by General Electric, one of the largest manufacturers of weapons on the planet. NBC is properly understood best in its role as the propaganda arm of G.E.

I think it's funny how they just keep on alienating their base of fans, and continue to wonder why they are less and less popular... in fact, what band are we talking about again?

  310. Kelly Says:

Think about it. It's the run-up to the election and NBC is raking in millions to air paid political advertisements. All the RNC would have to do is tell NBC that they will take away X ammount of advertising dollars and give it to other networks if they air those Dixie Chicks spots. It's corporate blackmail.

  311. turkeyfish Says:

    Suggestion.

Take 30 minutes to watch NBC at a time convenient to you. Write down the names of the advertisers and then make the vow that you will not by a single product sold by these companies in the next year. Rather buy from the competitors.

If NBC doesn't have the balls to air dissenting opinions, I suggest they don't need balls and hence, cutting them off won't bother them a bit.

    Actually Clinton appointed her.

    Comment by fred_smith_1313 — October 27, 2006 @ 11:37 pm

No he didn't. The guy who was elected, at the time, was George W Bush's father. A Republican. The first Gulf War was under George W Bush's father - A Republican.

Glaspie was appointed in 1989 - During Bush Snr's term of office. Read the constitution some time, who appoints America's diplomats? This is in Section 2 of Article 2 (Presidential powers.)

He shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint ambassadors, other public ministers and consuls, judges of the Supreme Court, and all other officers of the United States, whose appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by law: but the Congress may by law vest the appointment of such inferior officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the courts of law, or in the heads of departments.

Bill Clinton was only President from 1993. Unless Bill suddenly gained magical mind control powers it was Bush Snr that appointed Glaspie. Sheesh do you Republicans really think there were no presidents before Bill Clinton? Do you think future presidents can execute the duties of that office while they are still only future presidents?

Glaspie was sidelined to South Africa after her stuff-up in Iraq. She wasn't fired but she was basically put where she couldn't do any more damage. South Africa, for all of its internal issues even in the 1990's, isn't exactly a world hotspot.

  315. Bruce+Gorton Says:

and he shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint ambassadors,

Was the bit I meant to highlight in the quote. Don't know why it came out that way.

  316. Bruce+Gorton Says:

Oh, and future should have been in italics, not president. Sheesh the formatting was all over the place there.

  317. First Amendment Says:

What part of the First Amendment don't the Chicks and their supporters here understand? It doesn't guarantee that your views will be heard and agreed with, and it doesn't keep people from ignoring you or not buying your records.

The government hasn't stifled their right to say anything they want. Their former fans have simply exercised THEIR right to disagree.

Claims, such as those above, that the Chicks' reduced popularity are indicative of creeping fascism are better read as indications that the commenters are utterly ignorant about both the First Amendment and the definition of fascism.

  318. Bruce+Gorton Says:

    First Amendment

Nope. Claims like the one above reflect that their is a rising belief that criticising the president is somehow un-American and unnacceptable, which runs counter to the whole point to the first amendment. Freedom of speech is designed specifically with critising the current administration in mind, whatever that administration may be. Most of your civil rights have similar intentions in mind, even the right to vote in real terms was just a peaceful means of achieving a rebellion.

  319. Larry Says:

History will demonize the entire Bush Administration and transform the Chicks into eternal icons of Courage and Conviction, in the same way that Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, and others have been recognized in the years following their unpopular and visionary stands against war and social injustice. Ultimately, The Bush Reign Of Terror will be cited as America's darkest days and most shameful era.

Go Chicks Go! Create a whole new non-traditional un-conservative fan base. We're here!

"So we should force NBC to put on TV what we say? Aren’t they allowed to do what they want?"
    Comment by Roger_Roger — October 27, 2006 @ 12:05 pm

Yes and no. Major corporations own all mass media outlets and censor them as they see fit, thereby controlling most of what the public sees and hears. Oh, people are free to say anything they want, but if the corporations don't want them to be heard, they won't be heard. That defeats the purpose of free speech.

Whoever controls the media in a democracy (or representative republic) controls the votes. That pretty much defeats the purpose of democracy.

The mass media is the major or only source of information to the majority of people, so is not simply a business that should be free to operate the way its owners want; it is a special case. Information is as critical to a free society as air is. Anyone imposing their own restrictions on the flow of information is violating one of the most important human rights, and essentially taking over the government of that society. Hiding under the excuse "I own this network so I should be allowed to air or not air what I want" is not an excuse for censorship. The right of people to have open access to information supersedes the right of a business owner to censor what they see and hear.

as the war machine keeps turning.
    Death and hatred to mankind,

    Oh lord, yeah!

    Politicians hide themselves away.
    They only started the war.
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah.

Time will tell on their power minds,
    making war just for fun.
Treating people just like pawns in chess,
wait till their judgement day comes, yeah.

Now in darkness world stops turning,
    ashes where the bodies burning.
No more War Pigs have the power,
Hand of God has struck the hour.
Day of judgement, God is calling,
on their knees the war pigs crawling.
    Begging mercies for their sins,
    Satan, laughing, spreads his wings.
    Oh lord, yeah!

So go on, put your money where your mouth is and send some of that over to Iraq. Support our troops in real life.

  331. Maggie Rheinstein Says:

[...] ThinkProgress has obtained the ad NBC doesn’t want you to see. Watch it: [...]

  337. SLK2005 Says:

I really wish they would air that video. That would ensure no one would buy their CDs again! What a dumb sh**.

They are excellent at promotions though. They have turned this into a cause celeb when it's really about a bunch of hillbilly babes without a complete brain between them.

  338. PoliticalCritic Says:

So much for freedom of speech. I guess it only applies now when you say something the government agrees with. I'm shocked that NBC didn't have the stones to play it.

  339. Chris Says:

Much of these comments may be true, but it would probably be best for the Dixie Chicks to shut up and sing. The ad, whether this is right or wrong, emulates a feeling from many who don't want to hear a bunch of blonde bimbos telling our government what to do.

  340. Bruce+Gorton Says:

    Chris

How about they all just keep quiet, you know, the exactly the same way musicians from Joe Hill on have always kept quiet, and tell you to get stuffed?

  341. Alecia Says:

I think it is amazing that the Dixie CHicks can do this. That is our right in America to speak what we feel. If we take that away we will be like any other country!

  342. Texgotham Says:

It was for good reason that H.L. Mencken referred to rednecks as "gaping primates." He added that "not all the benign munificence of the Rec Cross and Salvation Army will keep these congenital morons from starving themselves to death."

  343. Jay Dee Says:

Like most Liberals you are long on rhetoric and short on facts.

All right, am I the only one who doesn't think that passes the smell test? Networks are, of course, welcome to turn down advertising, but that seems an exceedingly odd and unlikely move by NBC. Keep in mind that it's the Chick movie's distribution company making the claim, though that's not made very clear in the ledes to most of the stories:

According to the Weinstein Co., NBC's commercial clearance department said in writing that it "cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President Bush."

TWC also quoted a rep from the CW as saying it had concerns that "we do not have appropriate programming in which to schedule this spot."

The CW brass disputes the Chicks' version of events:

"That's not true," he said. "The spot was not declined. In fact, we were told they were not going to make a national spot buy on CW."

An email exchange obtained by Daily Variety between a media buyer for TWC and a CW standards and practices rep seems to back that up. The CW reps asks the media buyer if "you have a buy with us for the Dixie Chicks movie?" The ad rep for TWC replies, "We do not currently have a national buy with CW."

Oops. Then, there's all this oppression:

The Weinstein Co. isn't facing a total blockade against its ad.

Spot in question aired on the ABC-owned stations in New York and L.A. earlier this week during a broadcast of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" featuring the Dixie Chicks.

Ad has also aired on Peacock-owned stations in New York and L.A., as well as on CW affils in the same markets.

Yeah, the silencing of the Dixie Chicks is positively deafening.

  344. Jameson Says:

The Dixie Chicks seem like petulant spoiled brats who think they are entitled to an audience. They're not. This has nothing to do with free speech. No one has infringed on their rights to free speech or stopped them from saying anything, certainly not the US Government and the Bush administration or NBC. They've made their comments, their records, their movie, and their millions.

But other US citizens have used their rights to free speech to decide not to listen to them. People vote with their feet -- and their wallets. People have the right to listen to someone else. And NBC has the right to decide what they will and wont air right before an election.

Or do only petulant liberal stars have rights?

    Life is great!

  345. barfly Says:

So tough....now that they know what free speech is and the consequences
it can incur, I'd suggest they also just shut up. I don't care anymore about
them. And if you think this country is as bad as China and its dictatorship
you're stupid...but see....free speech is alowed to any one...even the
    stupid.

  347. NBC refuse to broadcast a film trailer containing criticism of President Bush (at wongaBlog) Says:

[...] and US tv-channel NBC refused to show it on the grounds that it’s ‘disparaging to President Bush’. I assume this channel is happy to screen political ads that personally attack senators etc. I wonder whether the real reason is right-wing bias or fear of a backlash. I’m sure there are crazies on the left, but the ultra-nationalism that goes seems to go hand-in-hand with the modern Republican Party is appalling. Gotta hope the Democrats have some success in next week’s midterm elections. [...]

  348. Flappy Says:

    Jameson

You don't get it. The Dixie Chicks don't feel that they are entitled to an audience. They just didn't want their audience destroyed by outside sources and unfair practices.

Right-wing talk radio made the Chicks out to be Public enemy #1. Boycotts were started by the likes of Mike Gallegher, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and many other conservative radios hosts. The conservative media needed a whipping boy, someone they could intimidate, they figured the Chicks as an easy mark, boy were they wrong.

Cummlius Radio, Clear Channel and Infinity Broadcasting blacklisted the Chicks music.
They allowed some of their stations to sponsor CD smashing parties. Clear Channels former co-Chairman is a huge Bush fund raiser and family friend Clear Channel is also the network whose right-wing radio hosts called for the boycott in the first place. Of course Fox News are still constantly blasting the Chicks.

Natalie Maines comment three years ago was an off the cuff remark, that the right-wing media used to show its power. They made a moutain out of a mole hill. Sure, some fans would have been pissed at them, but the concerted effort from the right-wing to bring the Dixie Chicks down was unprecedented. It my not be true censorship, but it sure is intimidation.

The Chicks did not look for this fight, they were forced into it by the right-wing media. Things happen for a reason, and the Chicks are now the face of free speech. I was not a fan until the backlash, I am now a fan for life.
    Long live the Chicks.

  349. freethought Says:

Where were their principles when they apologized to whoever holds the office of president in USA?

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect," Maines said in her latest statement.

Dixie Chicks are sell outs. How dare they claim to respect a criminal administration?

Yea, I get that money is important, but is your current job worth thousands of lives these criminals in charge are taking?

    Apperantly so!

  350. ffpm203 Says:

You people are delusioanl!!! If you really think that NBC, former home of Katie "The Commie" Couric, wooldn't want to run an anti - Bush ad then you have completely lost any contact with reality. (I know most of you are probably post modernist, so I will clarify by saying you have lost touch with even your own reality.) First, the evidence is out there that NBC didn't turn down the ad since there was no national ad campaign to even turn down. Secondly, to think that NBC is the "Right Wing Media" or that Bush put the pressure on them to not run the ad is incredibly naive at the lest and patently ridiculous at the most. NBC, CBS, CNN, and ABC haven't publish even one story on the health of the economy since the 2000 recession turn around, in spite of the increidble unprecedented gains it has made. Including the low unemployment rate, which is better than god Bill Clinton had during those dark days of US History. And that is just one of the example of media bias. I could list hundreds of other examples. So, to make the statements that one of the left wing outlets (which the aforemention have earned the name) would not want to run an anti Bush ad with pure ecstasy flies in the face of any and all available evidence.

  351. Bob Says:

I wonder about the big fuss about the Dixie Chick's comments. Natalie Maines made one comment at one show. Granted, the country music audience is conservative, but there are other artists who are well accepted by that audience who are much more vocally critical of the Bush administration. (e.g., Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Fogerty). I haven't heard any outrage about these artists from the Country Music fans. Why all the criticism of the Dixie Chicks? Could it be because they are women?

  352. craig Says:

The CW brass disputes the Chicks' version of events:

"That's not true, the spot was not declined. In fact, we were told they were not going to make a national spot buy on CW."

The CW reps asks the media buyer if "you have a buy with us for the Dixie Chicks movie?" The ad rep for TWC replies, "We do not currently have a national buy with CW."

  353. Cynthia Says:

I totally agree with Jameson in his comments part of which is quoted here, "The Dixie Chicks seem like petulant spoiled brats who think they are entitled to an audience."

I am sick of the Dixie Chicks. I am not interested in their politics, I used to like their music, but not any more. Why can't they just Shut Up and Sing! What a great idea. Too bad they didn't follow it.

  354. Bob Says:

Responding to Cynthia - I don't understand your point. Where have you heard the Dixie Chicks complain?

Natalie Maines made one comment at one concert. That hardly qualifies the Dixie Chicks as a political band. They were subsequently attacked by the political right and the country music establishment. When pressed for a response, they stood their ground.

What's the threat? Why did so many people get so upset? Willie Nelson and Neil Young have been much more outspoken and are still well accepted in the same crowds. Could this be a reaction by people who just can't accept women speaking out on the issues?

  355. craig Says:

Yeah Bob, that's it... we're opposed to the womens movement. Get real! Nelson and Young maybe outspoken more so, but they're not whining about their "right to free speech" being denied.
What I want to know is, why do all the liberals think that this is a right wing conspiracy? If a rock star spoke out about anti-gay rights, GLADD and every other gay organiztion would be boycotting in a heartbeart. Country music is primarily based with conservatives, so if you speak out against a conservative president on foriegn soil you need to be prepared to face the consequences or your words. No one said they couldn't say what they want, they did and the back lash is no ones fault but their own.

  357. Bob Says:

Craig -- Dixie Chicks whining about their free speech rights being denied? I missed that part. When did they do that? I've heard some other people complain, but not the Dixie Chicks themselves.

This isn't a "womens movement" issue. From what I have seen, the Dixie Chicks never signed up for that either. As I mentioned earlier, this was simply one comment made on one occasion. They didn't make it a big deal, other people did. I still don't understand why so many people felt so threatened by Natalie Maine's comment.

  358. historylive Says:

I don't think most people feel threatend by them. I think most people that don't support them anymore b/c they spoke against someone they believe in. it's their right to protest/boycott them. Why make that into such a big issue? Dixie chicks country superstars disses the prez of the usa... conservative fans don't like it, don't buy 'em and don't want to hear them on the (country) radio station, so why should the radio station be forced to play them if their listeners don't wanna hear it? It's all been blown up... on both sides of the spectrum.

  368. Renee Says:

The Chicks were right in the first place! They just said what many people were thinking. Bush is the most embarassing thing that has come from this country in 200 years. The worst part is he has the power to kill thousands of people. I think it would be nice if word got out that some smart people think he is a dumb ass... Maybe more would speak up... The Chicks took it on the chin for thinking folks, and the less educated, stupid sheep just keep following the dwindling herd, chanting "Bush, Bush" heading for the cliff...

  369. NEpatriotsFanDE Says:

All this hulabaloo regarding whether the Chicks did anything wrong when the made their commentary seems pointless. The real point was where they made their comment. How can anyone, with some semblance of intelligence, make a comment , a derisive one at that, about someone in front of a foreign audience. Our ' rules ' that supposedly governs we citizens in this country does not apply when we visit another country.

Yes, it is true that the president does not have much support from both the left and the right because of what people see from snippets of information that gets trickled into our homes through different forms of media from sources that seem to have " an axe to grind " . But he has made many decisions which have made many people " scratching their heads ".

The Dixie Chicks , outside of their music, which in my opinion " sucks ", but then all country music sucks in my opinion, should have the right to say what they want when they want, but they have to express their opinion in the right venue. I will defend their right to express their opinion , but I should also be given the right to intelligently disagree with that opinion.

  370. BigGorilla Says:

I will defend their right to express their opinion , but I should also be given the right to intelligently disagree with that opinion.

    Comment by NEpatriotsFanDE — October 29, 2006 @ 4:48 am

No one is denying your right to disagree. NBC is simply allowing you to even hear their viewpoint. They (NBC) are basically saying that they do not agree with what the Chicks are saying, so the rest of the American public has no right to hear it. That is censorship in its purest form.

I do not like much of the Dixie Chicks music, but I agree with their comments. I find it odd that country music, which is largely (though not exclusively) a Southern genre, has shunned them so readily. The South has been historically a Democratic, very liberal region. I understand that 9/11 changed some views, but I did not ever think that one event could turn a whole section of the US Republican.

Lastly, I agree with an earlier poster about NBC and its own two-faced policy. They will air one of their longest running shows, SNL, with skits openly making Bush, along with his entire regime, to be an idiot but they are unwilling to air comments by others that mirror their own.

  371. Pure Texan Says:

Its Ashame we have let our country get in this shape.Death threats for exercising your freedom of speech, partisan news media, liars, cheats and crooks in the white house and going to war with a country that had nothing to do with 9-11,so sad.The worse of all,are the Idiots that still see Bush as a leader.Another note people,Bush is not a Texan,if I moved to Japan that does'nt make me Japanese,George was born in Connecticut, therefore NOT A TEXAN.That was his first lie in office, saying he was a Texan.Let it be noted that NBC has chosen one side of a political argument, therefore they can never be known again as fair and non-partisan,they now run a communistic broadcasting station based on government rule.
The American public should ask themselves one question? What has this Administration done for our Country? Please do not use the War as your answer, any Idiot can start a War.

Bravo to the Dixie Chicks for sticking up for their convictions. If more people had done so, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in -- hated by people the world over for being so arrogant. NBC should be boycotted -- not the Dixie Chicks.

BRAVO to the Dixie Chicks -- they are my new heros! If more people would stand up for their convictions, maybe we wouldn't be in the mess we're in -- and maybe the rest of the world wouldn't hate us for being so arrogant. It's NBC who should be boycotted -- shame, shame on you!

  375. Pure+Texan Says:

Sorry, but the qualification for being a Texan is that its your place of birth,it has nothing to do with the Alamo etc. the same can be said of being an American! Most of the defenders of the Texas Independence were from various States. If your Born in Texas you could'nt possibly be anything but Texan.

  376. Marilyn Daly Says:

What a sad commentary on our country and NBC. The corporate media seems to want to control what we can and cannot view and or hear. Our democracy is weakening because of this administration and its cohorts at NBC. Boycotting NBC is one way we can show our displeasure at the erosion of our freedom of the press.

  378. Cactus_mike Says:

So much for freedom of speech....
How pathetic that a US network, ban the publicity of a film which points its finger to the truth. Every night on the news, NBC shows us the lies of the war by filtering it as a "good thing for democracy". It is shameful, disgraceful. Is NBC a right wing propaganda machine?
The people involved (the President, Vice-President, the Generals..et al) are caught on tape in lies by someone saying one thing, while the other says the opposite.
Having lived in the US during my formative years, and having been taught in American Problems, that the benefits of the Vietnam War was a good thing against Communism because the domino effect was a threat to us and our liberties....In retrospect, these were blatant lies that sent many young Americans to their deaths for a cause that was in the end, the shame of the American people - you only have to look at the Veterans of that war and see the damage the it caused - What a price to pay for "Democracy". Again with the war in Iraq, we are faced with the same lies by the leaders of the USA.
Go Dixie Chicks, I support your film wholehartedly.

I am often amazed at this Bush administration for the views they take as well as the tactics they employ to silence those who use their inalienable rights to freedom of speech. However, to put a bit of fairness on this. NBC is using that right as well. If you don't agree, do something about it. Get people to boycott NBC. They will change their stance when they are losing money. And don't put the republicans back in office. I am not a Dixie Chick music fan, but I am a fan of them saying what they mean and meaning what they say, and then standing behind it with action. May their creator bless them.
This country was founded on action such as theirs. Read up on the Boston Tea Party. Vietnam protests, etc etc ad nauseum. They have the privledge to say their piece and have the right to gain peace having said it.
Yes we seem to be giving up many rights with this administration, and it is time to take them back. And not let big conglommerates like NBC tell us what we can or cannot watch.
It is time to take back our power and vote out the assholes who want to take our power and freedoms away. So vote and boycott.

You wingnut trolls are so predictable. Where did you get your trolling points? You're not capable of independent thought.

Did the "liberal media" jump all over Toby Keith for expressing his opinion? or Lee Greenwood? or Ben Stein? It only seems to be a "problem" if one expresses a liberal opinion, like Barbara Streisand or the Dixie Chicks.

And the REAL problem here is NBC's non-allowance of an advertisement on the public airwaves because they disagree with the message. If the FCC were doing its job, NBC would be cleaning out offices by now.

The Dixie Chicks are doing a greater service than many realize. However it has happened, people are talking and debating and, yes, even fighting about what is the meaning of freedom of speech. This is always a good thing. Never forget that it is your patriotic duty to question your government because the government is made up of people who were put there by you to represent you, not to rule over you and make your decisions for you. Unfortunately, that has been forgotten by many average Americans who have gotten politically lazy in recent years.
... Also, George Bush is *not* a Texan by birth by any stretch. He is a transplant. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended the best preppie schools there, as does any scion of the Eastern elite. His mother, Barbara, was born in New York City, and raised in Rye, New York. His father, George Herbert Walker Bush, was born in Milton, Massechusetts and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. Yes, #43 was raised in Texas from the age of two, but he spent much of his childhood on the East Coast as a lot of the family are still there. His entire family are Eastern elite, not Texan. He's only Texan when he can make it work for him, which he has been able to do quite well for a long time.

NBC has the right not to buy any ad they don't want to buy. Just because you have freedom of speech doesn't mean you are entitled to force people to listen to you. This "movie" is about the backlash the Dixie Chicks got for Natalie's big mouth. Well sweetheart, you have every right to say any stupid thing you want. Your fans have the right to toss your CDs in the trash, and Radio Stations have the right not to play your music too.

Apparently liberals think this basic freedom only applies to them.

Just as the Chicks have a right to say what they say, so NBC has the right to do what it does. I'm fortunate that I don't have to watch NBC here in England. But you don't have to either, if you don't like what they're at. I think it sucks that they banned the ad because of its content, but that's just my opinion. I support the Chicks, not NBC, but that's my choice. Surely those are the rules of a free society?

I despair at the increasing politicization of Amrican day-to-day life. It reminds me more and more of the communist states that we all railed against during the cold war. Soon we may not be able to tell the difference; it's just that some people will be more equal than others.

It is so insulting that the physics defying collapse of three towers over 1000 feet tall "imploded" without any listing, and the third was not even hit.
The next thing you know, we are at war, our freedoms are being taken from us, yet we cannot find Osama Bin Laden.

Praise for the Dixie Chicks!!! They have a God-given talent. I pray that God will lead them to greater heights in the future. Perhaps they have made mistakes, but they should be allowed to make more money to pay Uncle Sam ... or whomever. I would have missed the ad on NBC.
I have no doubt which political party will remain in power soon, with all the voting fraud that has been perfected since the 2000 election. I watched in awe as a bus load of protesters took the day off work and stormed a precinct in Florida helping to prevent a recount during 2000. I was surprised there was no tear gas. Why?
Our civil liberties are squashed, folks. Some God-fearing souls are opening up their church bulletins to find political junk, and often they hear from the pulpits how trustworthy our government is ... deserving of our total confidence and praise. Soon "the liberals will be going to conservative churches," they say. Who owns the churches?
One thing many folks praise this government for is the huge tax cuts ... for who? According to a quote from one well educated speech writer, "Why, shouldn't the hard-working American have their money back?" You know ... the powerful might have been gracious enough to give us our hard earned money back because they could predict the future ... higher medical bills, heating bills, education bills, etc. Many folks who actually saw money come rolling in probably put it right back in the hands of the political "grubs". What happened to the stock markets and investment savings accounts shortly afterwards?
Why the rise in the stock market today? Perhaps the inside traders are now putting stolen money back, hoping those who lost their souls after Enron and other market failures will suddenly jump back on board and help thieves fill their pockets AGAIN. Aren't they great investors?
The second reason for praise may be that the unemployment rate is said to be lower. My one and only thought on that subject ... some couples have to have four jobs (without health care). Liberals can add too.
Where are the religious leaders who can help us understand why there is such corruption in America these days? Why can't THEY speak? Where is my confidence?
    "Stay the Course" Dixie Chicks."

  398. Karl Leuba Says:

No one can blame President Bush for wanting to silence dissent. BUT ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN CAN CONDEMN NBC FOR THAT. I think that under Federal Communications Commission Regulations, NBC can loose licenses FOR REFUSING TO BROADCASE PAID ADVERTISING THAT IS POLITICAL, AND NOT IN VIOLATION OF DECENCY REGULATIONS.

  399. TheEmperorIsNaked Says:

ABC just aired an uncorroborated, unsubstantiated politically-biased miniseries (the producer from a staunch conservative group), "The Path to 9/11", that trounced Clinton instead of Bush for ignoring al Qaida leading up to 9/11. Yet, someone can't sell ad-time for the DVD which focuses on the careers of 3 promising singers whose careers were wrecked through 1950s McCarthy-like tactics?

  400. sambo4 Says:

I've tried to read through the postings here but just seem to read "blah blah blah I hate George W. Bush, blah blah blah, I hate George W. Bush. Blah, blah blah, fascism, blah blah blah censorship. Does it occur to anybody that the networks make their content decisions based on what they anticipate as it's affect on ratings. My guess is, even though their ratings already sucked, they decided, for the sake of salvaging whatever was left by not alienating the remaining viewers, to not air the ad. Bush had it right actually in the trailer. The Dixie Chics shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because people aren't buying their records.

It has nothing to do with censorship.

By the way, "shut up and sing" is the name of a book by Laura Ingraham who directed it toward entertainers who should just "shut up and sing" and stop trying to inject politics into their performances. People don't pay their money to go to a political rally. They pay to go and be entertained. So maybe NBC's decision also had something to do with a possible plagurism problem.

Screw the Dixie Chicks-they don't have the guts to say in Texas what they said in England! They should have just shut up and sang, because they would still have a career if thay had. They are has-beens, never will they acheive the success that they were getting before Natalie stuck her foot in her mouth. They under estimated Americans, real Americans whom are the majority. Being American has nothing to do with whether you are liberal or conservative. Being American is simply being born in America. Now you may say that we aren't patriotic. That would still be a false statement to attach to most (even though I hate this word) liberals. Most liberals are just as patriotic and convicted by their beliefs as any conservative.

I do not label myself with either tag. I generally vote a split ticket, as I will next Tuesday. I vote for the person that I think will do the best job, not the one who is most like me. I think that is where most Americans get in trouble. A majority put someone into office because he is just like them or thinks just like them...not caring if he actually has the intellect or the compassion for the job.

All you liberals can do is whine about how much you hate George Bush, one of the best Presidents that we have ever known. And thats why you hate him so much, because he is so right and he shows just how wrong you are! Funny how the majority of the American people (the ones with brains) agree with me!

I will admit that I voted for Bush, but I do not agree that he is the best president ever, as you stated. I also don't think that the MAJORITY of the American people agree with you. Bush hasn't had a job approval rating much above 40% since shortly after 9/11. As a matter of fact, his rating as of today is at 39%. That is a HUGE difference from a majority. He didn't even win by a majority of the popular vote when he was elected the first time.

Your post was mainly just filled with name-calling and retoric. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and you expressed yours strongly, but you shouldn't always assume that everyone that doesn't agree with you has low intelligence unless you make sure that you have your facts straight before you post.

Have a great day and hug a Liberal.

  403. patriot+Kate Says:

Tell me: do politicians approach the entertainers to perform at some of their events or is it visa versa?
Everything seems to whirl around politics these days. People who attend places of worship and donate their money faithfully like to hear words that will comfort their souls. Instead, they often see those god-awful red and blue ties and have to hear references to politics spoken from the pulpit ... ruins the whole day.

  404. patriot+Kate Says:

Whats up with all the hatred? It does seem to me that its gotten MUCH worse since Bush and his gang took over, and I've been around for a long time. Certainly the violence in our country has accelerated. And what is the media so afraid of? Somewhere I read that the media is "owned" by the government. The author claimed that the Feds have "something" on most everyone we see on TV on a daily basis. I wonder. Oh yeah--I love the Dixie Chicks--and just like the rest of us, they have a RIGHT to their opinion.

Yes, they do have the RIGHT to their opinion. And they have the RIGHT to voice that opinion. I also have the right to turn them off, not buy their records, turn the station when they come on, turn around and walk the other way when I see them coming down the street. Does that constitute censorship or is that my freedom of choice. What liberals usually hate to hear is that freedom of expression and freedom of speech does not guarantee an audience. The Dixie Chicks are having a hard time accepting that people aren't supporting them in their opinions. Waaaaaahhhhh!!!!!

What is funny, is they have still captured your attention and you cannot help yourself to pay them the respect of response.
That is because they strike a chord of "knowing" in you that is true, you are just not conscious enough to allow your being the truth.
So go ahead, cross the street (I am sure you see them all the time) don't buy their records and hide in ignorance.
At some point you might just evolve into a "higher knowing self" that exists within you.
You will also realize this President has killed half a million people in Iraq, and that does not count the wounded nor our brothers and sisters who might be fortunate enough to return home with the nightmare of Iraq or Afghanistan playing over and over in their heads.

But for now, you go ahead and give your shallow response about how bad the Dixie Chicks are for stating what they believe, you know expressing the freedoms soldiers are giving their lives for.
Whose life or which limb are you willing to give for this "war you are so proud of"?
Does it not bother you at all the lies used and changed to get us into this war?
Weapons of Mass Destruction- not found (If they existed, Saddam would have used them)
    Terror camps
Non existent (until now, we are creating the very thing we supposedly set out to remove)
Now its; Well, at least they are not on our soil fighting us....
Oh yes, and we are liberating the Iraqi people,
    This last line is obscene!
We are murdering and maming people
    and calling it liberation.

    Heaven help us

Did anyone hear about the right to establish Marshall law the President and his congress just wrote overnight several nights ago?
Just a natural disaster or another "terrorist attck" and he puts Marshall Law into effect.
We should all be frightened over this. This means voting is postponed by the way.
    The Dixie Chicks and Paul Revere have something in common;
They all can see what is coming,
Too bad not everyone is listening-yet

    the truth is coming

  408. Karen Says:

I don't believe any American's have freedom of speech anymore. The beliefs our country is based on are being ignored these days. It seems as though politics is trying to give the Dixie Chicks a "life sentence" over this whole "Freedom of Speech" controversy. Natalie only said what most Texans are thinking, but won't say. It really doesn't matter what state the President is from, does it? She wasn't talking about the Office of The President of the United States and what it stands for. She was using her freedom of speech to express how she feels about the person, George Bush, and his actions. She didn't say she was ashamed to be an American or that she was embarressed to be from the United States of America. But a death threat?! Sending ANYONE a death threat is not freedom of speech. It is a crime punishable in a court of law in America. Did anyone bother to find the person or persons who sent death threats to the ladies called the "Dixie Chicks"? I doubt it. So...as I said in the beginning...American's really have lost their freedom of speech. And they've also lost their ability to forgive.

  409. sambo4 Says:

    sang real,

What was the purpose of the training grounds at Salman Pak where there was an empty airplane fuselage where, according to testimony from Iraqi refugees pre-2003, non-iraqis trained to hijack airplanes without weapons.

Why was an Iraqi general in March of 2001 looking for pilots for a suicide mission according to translated documents that were released over a year ago?

So, once again, the Dixie Chicks right to express themselves does not oblige me, or any other person, to listen. Maybe, if they are really concerned about their record sales and concert attendance, they should listen to their own advice and just SHUT UP AND SING!!!!!

Why was 180 tons of partially enriched uranium removed from Iraq in 2003 or 2004? According to the reports that I read, the department of energy classified it as almost too dangerous to deal with.

According to reports I've read, over 500 tons of raw uranium have been found in Iraq to date. But I guess those reports conveniently don't make it into the mainstream media or, heaven forbid, the extreme leftist media like this web site.

Saddam used chemical weapons on his own people. That's no secret to anybody.

In 1998, all of the Senate Democrats were urging President Clinton to take action against Iraq because of the threat of his weapons of mass destruction.

And I'd really like to know why you have such a problem with the President enforcing America's official policy of regime change in Iraq signed into law by President Clinton in 1998. Yes that's right. President Clinton.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regime_change

No, I don't like all of the people getting killed. I'm not convinced that your number is correct but I do resent the implication that our military is just a bunch of reckless killers. The US military is the most honor bound military on the planet. Contrary to the libelous image that is portrayed by the libs as goulag operators, Pol pot, and the nazis.

Additionally, prior to 2003, nobody denied that the intelligence suggested that he either had wmd in the form of chemical weapons or was on the cusp of going nuclear. France didn't, Russia didn't, no Democrats in Congress did either. And I also seem to recall the UN had some resolutions having to deal with wmd, didn't they? Hind sight is always 20/20.

  411. Bear Says:

    Hey Dixie Chicks-

Shut the hell up! Nobody elected you to represent America. If you have something to say, do what everyone else does; grab a picket or write your congressman. The only thing you do by opeing your mouths is weaken our county and hurt troop morale.

Our enemies would have you beheaded for your big mouths.

  412. Sang Real Says:

This is for the Dixie Chicks,

I pray you stay strong in the fray. I am grateful that you have courage in these times. It is your voices that stand and anchor the energy of truth which is easier to attack from the armchair in homes surrounded by fences and cloaked in the ignorance which creates a false sense of security.
Though it may be very difficult to stand up and sing and voice your truth, it is ringing clear as the liberty bell.
I pray that bell starts an entrainment that rings loud and clear and deepens any knowing being within its vibration.
I hope it opens up the vessels which would rather give up their rights in the form of "national security" and being protected by allowing the government to shut people like you up and pass things like the "Patriot Act" under the cloak of night without so much as a whisper of resistance in the halls of congress.
Why? Because they are silenced too!
The people of this country no something is terribly wrong.
They just don't all realize that it will take brave people like you, who are willing to risk worshipping the almighty dollar and voice the truth of what you feel to set us free.
That's right; it is the truth that will set us free.
But truth tellers aren't really popular when they are telling big truths.
It isn't until later that we look back in the comfort and distance of history that we can say, wow, that person was so brave standing up with the truth.
We didn't have enough people to stop the non-citizen taxes placed on Mexican's, Native American's, African American's and eventually Chinese and others in California's Gold Rush. This list is endless, and it is just so sad that we insist on what is "ours and our rights". "We know best".
We didn't have enough people standing up for other humans who became "strange fruit" at the hands of well, us.
    Jesus was hung too.
They had to shut that freedom loving parable talking temple table turning truth teller up.
Now they stand behind dogmatic empty shelled rhetoric of this man they would surely tell to shut up were He here today.
Real truth is not always comfortable.
    Especially for the
    "Masses".

So I thank you for your courage, no wonder you were given such talent to share. It was your vehicle from the universal knowing.
    God Bless America
    Land of the Free

That is the America I Love
So please help keep her alive and well

Anyone believeing we should follow him and believe in him just because he a president is an Idiot, and by your way of thinking, youd still be a British Citizen, remember 1776 and another King George? Its aweful there are so many people that can't think for themselves.Ive still not had one person tell me what they thing this adminitration has done for our country without using the word war,and as I have said, any Idiot can start a war.
NBC stated they would not run the Dixie Chicks Commercial because it would be Disparaging to the President, well Im wondering why they covered the election,I knew it was going to be disparaging to Bush,so what a bunch of hypocrites.

Hey, I e-mailed my congressman. Guess what I got ... e-mail ads for every drug on the market. Read who profits from these drug pushers. I had to call my ISP and pay extra for junk mail filtering. I must say, after a few weeks I did get a nice reply to my email.

If the President of America had listened to what others outside his blessed circle said, we would have felt a lot safer. But he was content with those who praised him. He actually made many of us more fearful of his actions than anything else. Why am I talking in past tense? It is not over yet.

  416. nancy Says:

well these last elections should give good old southern conservatives a wake up call...it certainly gave bush one. where does it say anywhere in our constitution and founding papers that our media can limit the freedom of speech. nbc was my station of choice for the news, ted williams and msnbc were watched every nite by myself...not anymore. drive thru the south, only place in america where billboards of sex houses, massages etc are blatantly along the highways. hypocrits, every one of them. bush's minister adviser being ousted for meth and gay sex.....what a laugh. wake up america....2006 vote just the tip of the iceberg

  417. patriot Kate Says:

Right Nancy. There were also huge signs along the highway with "VOTE REPUBLICAN". We all know that some people wanted to crash head-on into them.

AND, that minister adviser (probably wearing red tie) was flying across the country with money GIVEN to him from some of America's middle class citizens who have been treated like dirt since the year 2000.

At lease this election was FAIR, unlike the others since 2000, which made me wonder how we could ever teach another country about democracy.

  418. Eric Says:

I'm not sure everyone realizes the double-standards have been imposed on the Dixie Chicks. We went to war so the citizen's of Iraq could know the same kind of freedom that American's enjoy. And yet Natalie receives death threats because she voiced an opinion? That sounds like the kind of treatment she would have received under Sadam's regime. I saw a poll in which over half of the people think the Dixie Chicks are out of line for saying what they've said. And yet 60+ percent of Americans do not approve of the job the president is doing. Strange...

  419. Truthdetector Says:

Bush never said anything about the Dixie Chicks even after Natalie Maines gave her little speech. Nobody ever said she didn't have the right to say what she said. Apparently the Dixie Chicks have a problem with the reaction they got. Well, boo-hoo. Death Threats? like celebrities don't get death threats on a daily basis for a variety of things. Blacklisted? Since when are radio stations obligated to play anything? They decided not to play their music because they attacked the President on foreign soil in a time of war. Newsflash dixie chicks, they have the right to refuse to play your music if they wish. Oh, and the networks do not have to run ads if they don't want to as well. freedom of speech applies to everyone, not just pampered singers

  420. Truthdetector Says:

What double standard Eric? Nobody said thay they couldn't say whatever they wanted. You act as if everyone who disagrees with these broads shouldn't have the same right to express their feelings. Freedom of speech applies to everyone eric and those who disagree have the right to express their feelings by not buying CDs, throwing them away, not going to their shows, etc. Celebrities get death threats all the time, that is the price of fame. Natalie Mains chose to open her yap and is now complaining when those who disagree with her get the same opportunity.

  421. Truthdetector Says:

" At least this election was Fair"...LOL why is it that when republicans win it's unfair or their is a conspiracy to stop people from voting or having their votes count but when democrats win, it's always on the up and up and "fair"? The 2000 election was 6 years ago and the democrats lost fair and square. Funny how you don't see the republicans accusing democrats of a conspiracy. You guys won and you still can't stop bitching about 2000. Pathetic

  422. Truthdetector Says:

During the ninties did we have filmmakers conjure up cut and paste hit jobs disguised as a documentary? Did we have a movie about the assassination of Clinton? No we didn't and now the left makes suppression of free speech allegations because the Dixie Chicks movie ads aren't being run on NBC? NBC doesn't have to run every ad thrown at them. They chose not to run the ad and they have the right not to. They ran ads for Michael Moore's flick, and hundreds of other films including Passion of the Christ and Brokeback Mountain. Both very controversial. Natalie Mains made her little speech about Bush and hates the fact that those who disagree expressed their feelings by not buying their CDs or going to see their latest tour. I wonder if they'll make a documentary on how people avoided going to see this documentary?

  423. Truthdetector Says:

Yeah Grand Moff, the evil right wing dominated media that forced Dan Rather to authenticate a fake memo, put Michael Steele's endorsement by African American groups near the want ads, turned Foley into a huge media event while ignoring Jefferson's frozen money and Reid's crooked land scheme, turned macacca into a huge issue while ignoring webb's admitted use of the N word, and the fact that a former democrat congressman Gerry Studds actually had sex with underage male pages and was given a slap on the wrist and reelected. Yep, better watch out democrats in congress, the media who endorsed you at a huge marjin will now show their true colors and destroy you!

    Grand Moff Moron

  424. patriot Kate Says:

Want to LOL some more ... who endorses who? Think about the one who opened his pill hole and moked someone suffering from alzheimers.

Tell me ... are they still having problems in Florida? Why is there such a thing as an automatic recount? Sounds like Florida (or Dibold) fixed that, didn't they? You can't tell me there hasn't been an effort to make elections FAIR since the year 2000 when the Supreme Court had to DECIDE THE ELECTION (reason to bitch). How about trying to detect the truth.
There is a lot to investigate in Washington ... in both political parties. AND, the lawyers are lying in wait.

  425. patriot Kate Says:

Sorry ... it was Parkinson's disease instead of Alzheimers.

  426. Kirk Says:

Wow. You people on the left really are off your rockers. It is like you are scared little children. "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" (No doubt thanks to George Bush).

  427. sangreal Says:

    Wow Kirk,

You're right, the sky is raining/falling chemicals, the iceburgs are melting because of global warming, we are stripping the land for lumber and removing old growth forests that inhibit wild fires, and dolphins and whales are beaching themselves from sonar blasts, and I could go on but I am glad you know that George Bush is in part to thank because of his cronyism to big businesses that don't care about us, that means you too.
We are now enmeshed in another unwinable war (they have fought with each other forever and we should not have gotten involved, even to save our precious oil concerns trading in the euro over the dollar),
But Eric, I am so glad you know it is George Bush's fault.
Now that we are more vulnerable than ever, our debt (in large part from this war and the over 1/2 trillion dollars we invested, not to mention the lives lost, mamed, and the memory's that will play tapes in the men and women's heads of our soldier's if they do come home.
But the debt, is financed by China, as we buy up their goods and don't want to pay the American worker's wages.
Global Warming is real, but this administration has over and over paid the onlyscientist's who were willing to say there is any shred of a possibility it is not true.
Let me see, Harken energy and Haliburton.
What do they and our current President and VP have in common?
We need to put every science/physics student on the job of solving our energy problems and get off of petro as fuel. (It is used for many other things such as the plastic for your computer shell, etc.) Cars could drive and come home and charge up our houses, but we are too busy running on this planet to pay attention to the real problem. Yes, I know the energy problem is solved, Max Plank comes to mind immediately. There is just too much money to be made with oil and returns on infrustructures such as pipelines through Afghanistan and that list is endless too.
We need to make our own country and its people strong, healthy, educated and cared for-employed and off the grid.
When we live as an example we will not need to bomb other countries to "help" them.
We won't have our soldiers coming home to the country they left to fight for our rights/freedoms that are quickly being stripped from us-Patriot Act.
All they have to do is scare you, and people lamely give up their freedoms, hmmmm, Hitler did something similar when he bombed the Reichstag Building and blamed communism.
We said "How could people just let him take people in plain daylight off to concentration camps"
    History is repeating itself
We need to watch ALLpoliticians, republican and democrat because they all (but three)voted for the Patriot Act.
    Do you feel safer now?
Lets cheer tearing down the Berlin wall and build one of our own on the Mexican border.

    Absurd, all of it.
We cannot find Osama Bin Laden yet, google earth and you can find anything, anywhere and thats just google for Christ's sakes.
This is the greatest country on the globe, "Winged Serpent" is what America translates to.
    In other words, the "Phoenix".
    Eagle
It is beautiful and great because other than the breathtaking Purple Mountains magesty and amber waves of grain, it is made up of every culture on this planet.
    That is power
    It should mean freedom
    and glory.

  428. Karen Hellyer Says:

I saw this movie last night in Oakland. Have been a huge fan of Dixie Chicks and now EVEN BIGGER. The fact that NBC won't air this isn't surprising. Censorship is alive and well in this "democracy" un-united.
The big media corporations are losing control of the message thanks to sites like thinkprogress.org. Thanks for showing this clip and putting the word out.
    LUDC!!!

  429. dcook Says:

What I do not understand is how people believe that
"fredom of speech" equates to "freedom of responsibility". You said it, you suffer the consequences. I do not have strong feelings one way or the other but those who believe that you are allowed to say ANYTHING you want and others are not allowed to react to it are either naive or just stupid.

They have their beliefs, they voiced them (in a place a manner I would not have preferred but so be it) and now they deal with the consequences.

  430. Anna riethmiller Says:

Time will always let us know if we were correct in our thoughts and actions. Time has sure told us that the Dixie Chicks were correct. I am glad someone had the nerve to stand up and say what they thought.

  431. Bill M Says:

    What Dixie Chicks movie?

  432. sando Says:

Freedom of speech does not mean the right to make open deadly threats. So dcook what you advocate by the statement they (The Dixie Chicks) have to live with the consequences of being openly critical of the the faux president including death threats then you are simply advocating lawlessness and should be immediately confined to Guantanamo.

  433. TimA Says:

I fought in Viet Nam and will repeat what I told people then -- fighting for my country means fighting for all of our rights, which includes the U.S. Constitutional right for EVERYONE to practice Freedom of Speech. I don't have to agree with what they say (which in the Chicks case, I DO!!!) but I will fight to the death for their right to say it.
Are there consequences for what we say - Yes. If people chose not to buy their music, or listen to them on the radio, that is their choice. But Censorship should not be one of those consequences, not in a country that speaks of the liberties its citizens enjoy.
Thanks, Chicks, for saying in public what a lot of us were thinking and saying to our friends.

  434. Tim Fowler Says:

George Bush just like DADDY two of our worst Leaders Please Dixie Chicks COME BACK TO FLORIDA

  435. susan bee anthony Says:

The Dixie Chicks are the best country trio that i have ever heard ofthey their music is the first thing i listened to as a kid....if people hate them than that is there problem and they shouldnt bug other with their bullshit.....who really care what others have to say when it is all negative.....it is like the saying goes...."if you cant say anything nice then dont say anything at all"

  436. null Says:

All these girls did was speek out the things they feel. there is nothing wrong with that. they could have done like everyone else and with there flags flying every where for awhile.. then you see the flags on roadsides in diches all over. is that better.I seen it out here...now think why did bush go to ''war'' they changed why we are there 3 times and it wasn't where we was to go to start with think 9-11 and how it went leave the girls alone!

  437. Rob Stadder Says:

There's a documentary that came out before 'Shut Up and Sing' called, "Protesting the Dixie Chicks" which is awesome -- certainly puts the whole tragic comedy into a time capsule. http://www.protestingthedixiechicks.com
There's clips of it on youtube.

  438. Nicole Says:

NBC should be allowed to air what they please. Don't talk about media byass - what about Hollywood. If your calling media conservative than what is Hollywood? so far left and shoving it down our throats on a daily basis.

  439. get real Says:

Set real the DCs can say whatever they want I choose not to buy their music. I love America. :-)

  440. Lisa Says:

Amen, I am glad that Americans can stand together and tell them to shut up. The Dixie chicks want America's freedoms - so they are gonna hear what America thinks. I used to love them until them opened there big fat mouths. Now I cant stand them. Thanks NBC for being American and using your freedom of speach to say NO Thanks. Go away.
    Lisa

  441. Alan N. Finkelstein Says:

Dixie Chicks are the Best!! Why not criticize Bush if you don't agree with him, that's an American right! Those who support Bush and supposedly are good Americans, would they deny that right to others? Absolutely, because they are closed minded and think only their thoughts should be heard. Trying to tell all Americans to believe in bush and his cronies and their policies and not to publicly disagree sounds like FASCISM to me.

Mazel Tov to the Dixie Chicks, Go for it and keep up the splendid work!!

  442. Gnarly Erik Says:

I stand in awe and admiration of the Dixie Chicks. It took tremendous guts and personal courage for them to stand up to the Idiocracy which now rules in my good old US of A. There's no telling how much money the boycott has cost the group - and that's literally 'putting your money where your mouth it'!

Maybe, hopefully, it is paying off for them since they just swept the top spots in the Grammy Awards - including Best Country Music Song! Whoo-ah!

I couldn't resist writing a little spoof on the subject:
    href="http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s4i14871">

  443. Terry Farley Says:

You know I have read all the comments on here and I tell you what, YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK!!!!! I am a proud member of the U.S. Navy and I stand behind a President, no matter what he is like. I have served now for 3 presidents and I may not have agreed with what they did, but I did it and backed them up on their decisions. You people support the Dixie Chicks for making comments outside of our country. If they had any spine at all, they would have made those comments in our country. That to me is just plain 'chicken shit cowardness'! I did not hear them making those comments when they were touring in the U.S. I am a firm believer in the freedom of speech, but until you have served this country and sacraficed time away from your families and gone through the trials and tribulations of being over there and taking the critism for wearing this uniform, then SHUT UP AND ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM THAT PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF GIVE TO YOU!

  444. Janet Says:

I find it sick also the comments made on here. Natalie didnt make her comments here in America. She made them overseas in a place where terrorists run rampit and are always looking to go aganist us. I am ashamed that she is an American. Wether Bush is right or not he is the president and the majority of the United States voted for him to be President. And as for the grammy's they arent even country. They have crossed over and they didnt deserve any of the country awards. they should have went to more deserving artist who arent out bashing people.

  445. JScott Says:

    Janet-
'She made them overseas in a place where terrorists run rampit and are always looking to go aginst us.'
Where did she make her comments? What country? Terrorists run rampit everywhere overseas? Is this true? These days, it seems as though being American means, a.)Failing geography and b.)Considering the world as containing two countries... America and Non-America.
'Wether Bush is right or not he is the president'
What does this mean? The only way I can respond to this is by re-stating a quote from earlier in this thread:

“To announce there must be no criticism of the President, and to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, it is morally treasonous to the American public.”
    – President Theodore Roosevelt

  446. Dixie Chicks hater Says:

The Dixie Chicks won the Grammys as an award for their Anti American behavior. The Grammy Awards are voted by the very liberal music industry and their award was more of an award for being anti American and hating President Bush.

They are not country and country fans such as myself reject them.

I listened to their cd and it is one of the most depressing pile of dog crap I have ever listened to. It is not music, it is left wing trash.

    DIXIE CHICKS "GO TO HELL"

  447. JScott Says:

    Dixie Chicks Hater-
Why do people keep insisting that because someone doesn't like our president, they are "anti-american". Anti-American!?!?!? The ability and desire to disagree, bad-mouth or flat out insult our leadership is what makes America so great. You can disagree with the chix, bad-mouth them, or even insult them... But they, my friends, at least when it comes to free speech, are the very essense of what Pro-America is all about.

  448. Paul Says:

After reading nearly all the posts, I am astonished to find almost no one talking about their music and the most recent CD. I don't care about their politics. I never look to entertainers for political opinions. Just don't care. Only care about the music. That being said, I think the album is OK, but not the best they have done or will do. I absolutely do not think is was worthy of all those grammy's, but the grammy's have always made strange choices for their awards.

I still like their music and listen to them just as much as I always did and I have no plans to change.

    Paul

  449. Terry Says:

    JScott,

Please do not refer to the Dixie Chicks as 'Pro-American' ever again. If they were they would have kept their mouth shut when they werer overseas and had to guts to say that to an American crowd. I did not see that happen at all. They have no backbone at all. With that being said, I absolutely agree with freedom of speech, but you do it within the cofines of our country. You want to bad mouth ourr leadership and the war effort, the have the guts to do it here, not to some very liberal british crowd. Of course the british will cheer for them, despite them being our friends, we still kicked their ass out of our country for a reason. Try having that freedom of speech in another country and find out what happens. Better yet, if they want to bad mouth my country so much, the country that has made them millions of dollars and fans like you, have them go to another country and see if their lifestyle changes. Don't bite the hand that feeds you and they found out what happens when they do. You refered to the quote by Teddy Roosevelt, please read that again and tell me where it states to bad mouth the President to other nations? That's what I thought.

  450. JScott Says:

First of all, I'm not a fan of their music, please don't assume that(I don't what this to come off like I am offended by the fact you called me a fan, i'm just not one).
Ok, maybe they aren't pro-american. I'm just saying that expressing their opinions about our president isn't anti-American. This whole idea about where they express their opinion is weird to me. I don't really care where they express it. They have expressed their dislike for W. in America and outside America. I also don't understand the whole "bite the hand that feeds you" argument. "they found out what happens when they do"? What happened is, some people were offended, some people weren't. Then, they sold records. A LOT OF RECORDS! These days, all press is good press when it comes to sales, or maybe the chix poltical ideas didn't influence sales and it was just a good album. I dunno. Like I said, personnally, not a fan.
As for Teddy's quote, it didn't mention any geographical boundaries to criticism.

  451. Matt Says:

Holy crap, what's the big deal about this? I just wish that music and politics could remain completely separate from one another. I think the Dixie Chicks should be ashamed that they were voted to win those Grammys because of their political views instead of their actual music talent.

  452. laura Says:

I agree with Matt....I'm so sick of hearing about it all. I've never been a fan of the Dixie Chicks (sorry, but I find her voice annoying) and I really wonder if they were voted for all those Grammy's because of their political views instead of their musical talent. The only song I heard from it is "Not ready to make nice"....not a bad song by any means, but grammy worthy? I'm tired of hearing about them from either side of the music industry. I wonder what their next album will be like. Will it still focus on this "not ready to make nice" attitude, or will it actually branch beyond their anger?

  453. laura Says:

It also frustrates me when so many people run around preaching free speech for all...as long as they agree with their opinions. Those who agree with the Dixie Chicks are labeled as unpatriotic, but those who are against them are therefore "redneck right wingers"and "the stupidest people alive." Come on now. Just because someone doesn't agree with your opinion doesn't mean that they're wrong. NBC made a business move, and now they're a horrible horrible station that people will now decide to boycott. Can we say double standard?

  454. pizza Says:

I think the Dixie Chicks' album deserved all those Grammys.

Their song, "Lullaby," is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard in a long time. Several others on the album speak directly to the heart, too.

Accessible melodies, great lyrics, excellent instrumentation, fine vocals.

Seems to me those are all good reasons for getting recognition.

  455. Karin Says:

I AM CANADIAN. I am PROUD to be a Canadian. I can tell you that there is a large majority of Canadians that agree with what the girls have done. How do I know this? Well I was at their concert in London, Ontario Canada. They sang the song "Not Ready To Make Nice". They had made posters and signs bashing Bush and supporting the girls. I have never in my entire life of going to concerts heard a crowd scream and support them like I did! I totally support and am proud of what they did. Why is it that the celebrities of the USA have to follow what someone tells them? Why do they have to abide by one person's rules? If you Americans don't want them in your country, I am pretty sure that us Canadians would accept them with open arms! I wonder if they even read this stuff on here...I kinda hope so. I want them to know one thing...I SUPPORT YOU. Thank you for standing up for what you believe in. I appreciate it. Only if the world wasn't so greedy...
Thanks girls for everything that you believe in! No matter what or who tries to bring you down, KEEP YOUR HEAD HELD HIGH.

  456. Gary Says:

On no! more about the "Dixie Twits"

  457. jojo Says:

I am sick and tired about hearing about them. I don't give a dang as to what they said or where they said it. They're making money off of this whole thing. And their song "not ready to make nice" didn't deserve a grammy. Maybe their record did (haven't heard it) but hell no, not that song. It was okay...nothing amazing. It's about the politics. I'm ready for some real music.

  458. Jason Smith Says:

Remember, libs have no back bone. Let's give them a chance to weaken this country. Go Hilary!

  459. ijay Says:

I am not an aamerican but i think the comment by the dixie chicks in a foreign country is totally unpatriotic even if u dont all like bush. Did they ever make that comment in america. U know this is why the world at times wonder or are offended by america. I think the dixie chicks should learn what pr for their nation is all about because believe it or not the reaction to iraq and every other thing does not exempt every other american. Truth be told, outside america bush's actions and decisions are seen as inclusive of all americans and pls dixie chicks especially the talker.... pls do not put down your country in a foreign land think of better ways to give good PR for ur lovely country

  460. Larry Says:

Right on. The chicks screwed up. The little fat one has a bad mouth. They were one of my favorites at one time. No more. I have destroyed my cd's. No matter who the President is the remark was uncalled for and unpatreotic.

  461. patrick Says:

dixie chics put one in bushes eye when they received so many awards last night as well as all the tits that stood by bush. nbc now also included.

  462. Mary Says:

The movie will never be showed in my area, so now that the DVD is out, I have ordered it from Netflix.

    Shame on NBC.

  463. Beatrice Bonner Says:

"We're ashamed that the pResident of the United States is from Texas." HOW in the world is that unpatriotic, anti-American or even Bush-bashing?! Do people still not understand that the Bush/Cheney administration & cronies LIED in order to invade Afghanistan & Iraq. Everything that has happened since Dec. 2000 has been UNAMERICAN! 5 Supreme Court Justices stopping recounts, Bush on vacation most of his 1st year in office, sitting in a classroom as if nothing was happening while under attack, several useless photo-ops, (UN)patriot(ic) Act, hurricane Katrina & it's aftermath(heckuva job Brownie), those infamous 16 words of his state of the Union address, Saddam & al-CIAda ties?, using flawed intelligenceto invade a sovereign country, pre-emptive wars of aggressor NOT declared by Congress, even though they sit back & allow it all to happen, TORTURE (Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Camp X-ray, warrantless wiretaps, senseless cronyism, Plamegate, Katherine Harris Florida, Ohio election FRAUD, doing away with habeus corpus, budget cuts effecting veterans, elderly & children, this list goes on.
It seems that alot of people agree with elder Bush who stated my country right or wrong, but they don't know the rest..when right keep following it, when wrong set it right!
It's time to wake up & educate the masses. Does anyone remember what was said of the German civilians after Hitler's Nazi regime was defeated? America under Bush Cheney is very similar to Nazi Germany 1939.
Perhaps the sheeple will realize what happened to them when a "terror strike" happens right around Oct 2008 & the decider declares Martial Law & elections are put on hold & Bush/Cheney are still occupying the White House in 2010. Maybe then We the People will see that this country has become a totalitarian dictatorship. Welcome to the American Christian Fundamentalist Empire brought to you by agents of the New World Order.

It all boils down to NBC didn't like the fact that Natalie said something not nice about the emperor not wearing any clothes & well media moguls (those in control) saw fit to make an example out of the DC. I mean radio stations sitting out trash cans to throw away your DC CDs? How ridiculous, you've already paid money in order to get the CD anyway, what point did you make? However the censorship of DC based solely on that is telling of what this society has really become, we should now know who's pulling the strings, who really runs this country & therefore the world. Zionists are the powers that be, the money masters.

  464. Terry Says:

    Beatrice Bonner,

You are completely off your rocker. You had better go back and study the Constitution and the laws of this land. The President of the United States can declare war on a country for a minimum of 90 days without the approval of Congress. You made comment as to him setting in a classroom full of children and not doing anything about 9/11. What was he supposed to do, get up and rush out of the classroom and have those kids panic at why he was leaving. Yes that would have been really good for them. I am in the Navy and therefore I do not have an opinion about the President, whether I agree or disagree, I will follow what he says to the fullest of my abilities. That is why I am serving so you can set up here and make some serious accusations that are completely out in left field somewhere. You also made the comment that the Bush/Cheney administration is like the Nazi regime? You need to check yourself into the mental hospital lady. Do you know anything about history? Are they setting up death camps around the nation and trying to kill off an entire race of people? Are they ruling this country like a dictator? That is why we have a Congress and a House. Really, please think about these stupid comments before you make them and make yourself look like a complete idiot to everyone on here.

  465. Beatrice Bonner Says:

The fact that you state you have no opinion about the pResident because you're in the Navy shows how BRAINWASHED you really are. If this were truly a free society then our military service would be free to have & openly express their opinion. Dumbya considered the Constitution of the United States nothing more than a goddamned piece of parchment. As far as 9/11, you're using "please don't alarm the children" as a reason for sitting there as if nothing happened, the leader of a country is usually a terrorist target, therefore he & the Secret Service put those children's lives in jeopardy. There are FEMA concentration camps already set up in the US REX84. Bush has defied the Legislative & Judicial branches of our once great republic. UnConstitutional wiretaps, suspension of habeus corpus, torture, violating Geneva Conventions, invading a country on FALSE pretenses that changed ever so often & turned out to be LIES! The police state actions in NY during the RNC arresting protestors, etc. voter fraud whereby stealing elections, providing jobs to incompetent buddies, and much more shows this country has a PROBLEM. Speaking of idiots, have you heard your pResident open his mouth & insert his foot so many different times?! The problem is more than just Bush/Cheney it also includes their entire Neo-conservative administration which has been infiltrated with Zionists. As well as the House & Senate which no longer represent the interests of their constituents but of the multinational corporations controlling them. America has become a fascist nation, but since it's dressed up in red, white & blue we've been duped to accept it the way it is & get back to business as usual.

  466. Shelby Says:

    You guy are losers!

  467. Shelby Says:

    ASS HOLE

  468. Sue Says:

Just read in the newspaper that the country music stations are still refusing to play the Dixie Chicks albums ... way to go. They're as bad as Hanoi
