ABC Political Director: ‘Every Elite Politico’ In The Country Knows The Media Has A Liberal Bias

Earlier this week, ABC Political Director Mark Halperin told Bill O’Reilly that members of the “old media” are too liberal and that “we’ve got to fix that” by “prov[ing] to conservatives that we understand their grievances.” Previously, Halperin has called right-wing muckraker Matt Drudge “the Walter Cronkite of his era” and said he “rules our world.”

In today’s Note, Halperin goes further. The Note claims that “President Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Lynne Cheney, Phil Singer, Karl Rove, Elizabeth Edwards, and every other elite Republican and Democratic politico share a set of cherished core American beliefs.”

Among the beliefs Halperin attributes to everyone:

The only way to get a fair message out is through (friendly) New Media, because the Old Media is incompetent, weak, and biased.

You can’t refresh Drudge too often.

It’s one thing to believe in an imaginary liberal bias. It’s another to deceive yourself into thinking that everyone else agrees with you.

Digg It!

  1. Mr.Moderate Says:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ABC in an "old media" company that apparently has a right wing political director. Isn't that a liberally biased old media with a right wing political director an oxymoron? Or is this guy just a regular old moron?

  2. Anais Says:

Mainstream media is no longer mainstream. They have gone over to the Dark Side. Arise and vote!

  3. dlet Says:

This guy gets a paycheck from ABC? WTF?

  4. Heterodoxy Says:

Have you wondered who the top ten media conglomerates are and who owns them?

    http://www.thenation.com/special/bigten.html

Now a discerning eye will notice that Congress is secretly and quietly trying to pass the privatization of the internet to TelCom companies and hope you do not notice or object.

more and more media are own by a sect few who further squeeze out competition as revelaed this year in FCC memo leaks that national owned conglomerates cut local information news.

Look arounf for obvious meddling in billionaires and corporate fat cats decide what we get to hear.

Why is NBC not airing Dixie Chicks movie trailer?

    Yep you guessed it

  5. Jay Randal Says:

Sorry nope, we all know the corporate media/press are biased towards the GOP/Bush Regime, so cut the crap ABC Political Director the GOP dope!

  6. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

“we’ve got to fix that” by “prov[ing] to conservatives that we understand their grievances.”

What's to understand? Mr. Halperin, your job is to tell people the truth, not simply parrot what people say. Quoting people without telling your viewers if what the person said was actually true or not amounts to nothing more than being a gossip mongerer. Your organization has the resources and the connections to find out the truth, and that is what you should be airing. If conservatives (or liberals for that matter) don't like the truth, they can work peacefully to change it.

And BTW, when you start fact-checking what the conservatives are saying, you will find that their remarks rarely merit repeating on your news broadcasts (especially without all the disclaimers you would need.).

  7. Quicksand Says:

Well, it's a good think that Mark isn't a part of the media....oh now wait..

  8. slappymagoo Says:

I wonder how much of this a-hole's blustder is politically motivated, and how much of it is financially motivated. Because, as young conservatives AND young liberals are increasingly going to those tubes in the internets connected by the Googles in order to get their political information, news departments from all networks are scrambling to keep the increasingly aging viewers who are still going to TV for their news fix. And since it's commonly believed that the older you get, the more conservative you get, ABC News has to pump its chest and shout from the rooftops that watching their news will insure the old timers get the news they want to hear. Not the news, per se, but the news THEY want to hear, in a way that will reinforce their already narrow world view. "We won't challenge your beliefs, rather, we'll preach to them. If you had the benefit of knowing what info we present and what info we DON'T present, you'd agree with our choices of what we present. But because we don't present all the info available to us, you'll have to trust us, we've got what you want, and nothing you don't."

    It's mondo-truthiness. It is...newsiness.

  9. Fredric L. Rice Says:

    Kind of amusing, yeah.

It's funny how this theofascist regime wants to pretend that the media they overwhelmingly control is still some how "liberal."

Only an idiot Christian is stupid enough to believe what their masters tell them.

  10. KRank Says:

    Wow. What a tool.

Sometimes their self-delusion is just astounding.

  11. Juan+C Says:

The Note claims that “President Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Lynne Cheney, Phil Singer, Karl Rove, Elizabeth Edwards, and every other elite Republican and Democratic politico share a set of cherished core American beliefs.”

I admit thats true if American beliefs mean to:

-Put a pirate (Raleigh) to plant tobacco using african slaves.
-Kill all possible non-white people up to the Apalaches and then, when Britain´s George III is defeated, cross the Apalaches and kill some more non-white people.
    -Celebrate Thanksgiving (Celebrate Genocide)
-Take Cuba, Puerto Rico, Okinawa, Hawaii, Panama, Texas, La Mesilla, etc.
-Bomb with nukes 2 civilian targets.
-Support Hitler and nazism before the war and describe Mussolini as an "elegant gentleman".
    -Invent the Monroe Doctrine
    -Invent State Terrorism
-Invent Military Suckpuppet governments in Central and South America
    -Promote savage capitalism and corporativism.
    -Destroy freedom within borders
    -Crush democratic elected governments overseas.
    -Create the CIA

I will stop here. Sorry to all good people. Im in a bad mood.

  12. Larry+from+C Says:

Until you read exactly, word-for-word, from Rove's daily talking points, YOU'LL be labeled as having a liberal media bias too!

Forget to say even ONE of Rove's daily two-word catch phrases and be tarred and feathered mercilessly.

  13. Albert Says:

It's not "the media" that have a liberal bias - it's the facts that have a liberal bias, and the GOP is running against reality.

  14. Sam Says:

How do we get this Mark off ABC..Should I write to AC News ? ANy suggestions?

  15. Bluedog49 Says:

What. You don't believe Halperin???!! Just look at the way the media treated the last administration compared to this one. As anyone can plainly see, they completely left Clinton alone and deferred to his every request. By contrast, they have been skeptical and hostile to Bush every step of the way. After all, look at all the investigative reporting they've done on Bush compared to Clinton. They weren't interested in investigating any accusations related to Clinton, but they're all over the slightest accusation regarding Bush. What's the matter with you people??!! Can't you see we have a liberal media conspiracy???!!!

  16. Larry+from+C Says:

“The essence of propaganda consists in winning people over to an idea so sincerely, so vitally, that in the end they succumb to it utterly and can never again escape from it. Joseph Goebbels”

Mark Halperin, you're a sick sick man. I urge you to RUN to your local mental health clinic and beg for help.

  17. Mr. Evil Says:

Is this guy Matt Drudge's gay lover? If he isn't, it sure sounds like he wants to be.

  18. Johnny+Lib Says:

Mark Halperin as ABC Political Director is just "unacceptable."

  19. BigCynic.com Says:

The reason Republicans complain about a "liberal bias" is not because there is one; they have long decried this imaginary bias over the years as a deliberate strategy for browbeating the press and inciting the dittoheads -- tell a lie often enough, and people will believe it.

The past six years of the lapdog press's shameless coddling of the Bush administration is more than enough to disprove the idea of a liberal bias and show that the mainstream media is actually moving in the other direction.

For instance: How many mainstream commentators have come out and flatly asked, "No WMDs, no ties to Al Qaeda, no involvement in 9/11 -- then just why did Bush invade Iraq?"?

The answer is zero. And that's the media's score on the liberal-bias meter.

The farce known as America's immigration debate

  20. Torch Says:

How a guy who likens Drudge to Cronkite gets ANY management position in a news organization is unfathomable.

At least he confesses (in not so many words) that he's making a deliberate effort to pander to the right-wing fanatics. Unfortunately, the right wingers demand that facts be ignored or actively buried before they'll accept you as friendly.

That is why Halpern has no business in a broadcast news division. And the person who put him there should be taken out back and shot.

  21. Mr.+Evil Says:

Matt Drudge couldn't give a factual report on a booger much less even remotely be held in the same regard as Walter Cronkite.

  22. ForTruth Says:

Last time I checked Jewish men owned, or is in charge of all the networks, newspapers, and news magazines.

These guys are all liberals, and want to appease radical Muslims, yea right.

  23. klyde Says:

and this cretin still has a job why? Oh yea the MSM is wholly owned by big corporations that work hand in glove with this administration.

  24. Mr. Evil Says:

    hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

  25. steve_e Says:

This is a nightmare. How far will they go? Does the public-at-large (inc. people who are simply distracted by life/work) believe the media?

The most frightening thing about the right controlling the media is that they keep calling it liberal! Their followers repeat that (they only know what they're told) and non-ideological people accept the conventional wisdom. Anyone who wants to tell the truth (which includes anyone who can use logic, not just "liberals"), has to work twice as hard just to be heard.

Wealthy media personalities just don't care. They get their money and are living high on the hog.

  26. Technodaoist Says:

Here's something for the all the ree-ree's...

    EVERYBODY is biased.

If you believe the media is biased, that means YOU HAVE A BIAS.

Smoke-screens and obfuscation. Creating issues that do not exist so that they have something to fight... How much of the Repub platform is just that???

  27. Mark Halperin Says:

"When I want to know what's going on I dig a hole and put my head in it .You can't stick your head in the sand too often".

  28. Scion Says:

So NBC censored the Dixie Chicks movie about being censored for being criticial of president Bush because of liberal bias?

And Path to 9/11 aired despite the liberal bias?

    Just asking.
    *eye roll*

  29. NoMoreRepublicanTrash Says:

I'm curious as to why they insist on floating this lie. Doesn't it them them look bad when it is so blatantly obvious that the media's bias is conservative, and has been especially kind to the Republicans and their party? Indeed, if we has a left-leaning, liberal media, we'd be seeing Bush's impeachment hearings on television now. One can only hope...

  30. Scion Says:

Only 15 posts before Clinton was mentioned! I think that might be a record?

By the way, the idea that the media left Clinton alone is patently absurd, to say the least.

  31. Mr. Evil Says:

Let's see. A mainstream media outlet reports on a crime or criminal activity conducted by a republican is considered as having a liberal bias. They would rather have the crime be buried beneath a pile of stories about Tom and Katie's gorilla baby, Jessica Simpson's whatever or a missing drunken blonde teenager.

  32. Suzanne Says:

It's just propaganda. The corporate government run MSM has the megaphone. So they just keep pounding away the lie "everyone knows........" bullshit.

This is transparent. There is a war going on and it is the war between those who want to "frame" the world for their own selfish power interests and those that want to participate honestly in the real world. I think I know who will win.

  33. Preznit+Pinhead Says:

I used to laugh at the old bumper sticker which read, "KILL YOUR TELEVISION". Now that bumper sticker is displayed on the back of my rusty old heap.

  34. Scion Says:

Why is it just Halperin people are going after? The by-line is:

By MARK HALPERIN, DAVID CHALIAN, TEDDY DAVIS, TAHMAN BRADLEY, EMILY O'DONNELL, DANIEL STEINBERGER and SARAH BAKER with KARUNA SESHASAI, ERICA ANDERSON, MONA RAPHAEL, BOB COSTA, and MICHELLE DUBERT

  39. RealityCheck Says:

I stopped watching ALL conservative mouthpiece newsmedia at the beginning of the Iraq war. If enough of us simply make them non-entities, their advertisers will notice. Guess what will happen then?

Halperin (hearts) Drudge -- best friends forever!!

  42. rail Says:

Why would every 'elite politico' believe that the media has a liberal bias? If an organizatin bats a crtical eye towards this admin, they get shut out of interviews/parties, relegated to the back of the room. It isn't in theiry 'best interest' to favor a liberal agenda under this administration.

  43. wisedup Says:

ABC lost advertising dollars over the 911 lie film, didn't learn a thing..I'll continue to have ABC,FOX and now NBC off my t.v. line up. Ahhhhh 'freedom FROM the press'...love it.

  44. dlet Says:

    Zooey,

  47. Think+Really+Small+Amounts+of+Progress Says:

    Most Americans are liberal.
The Neocons haven't had long enough time controlling government AND media to realize their policies don't work and will eventually lead to chaos and the end of America. But it's around the corner!

  48. Technodaoist Says:

    – The only way to get a fair message out is through (friendly) New Media, because the Old Media is incompetent, weak, and biased.

    – You can’t refresh Drudge too often.

Okay, first off this guy is pretty much saying that the organization he works for is incompetent, weak, and biased.

Second off, he proves it. By going to Drudge (one of the oldest of the 'new media') he is simply transferring his old methods to a new technology... kind of like listening to TV when all youre used to is radio...

For those who TRULY understnad the new media the phase is:
    - You can't refresh your 29 homepages in Firefox often enough.

    Ignant foo.

  49. Massachusetts_Liberal Says:

Good post, BigCynic (#19) - exactly right. It is very, very easy to disprove the liberal bias in the mainstream media charge. (Here's one way: If there were such a bias, wouldn't there have been major coverage of the vote fraud in Ohio in November 2004? Remember, we're talking about a liberal bias----and the press didn't even cover a story that had hundreds of facts to back it up. ) I can't believe this guy endorses Drudge. The fact that he can do that and maintain credibility with the MSM is proof enough of a right-wing bias.

Where is the obligation to the right wing to prove that the media understand their grievances? They're under no obligation to the right wing and its grievances. Their obligation is to the public, and it is this fact that they have forgotten. This just makes me furious. What a careerist. Members of the media are "too liberal" for what? Too liberal to serve the administration sufficiently? What proof does he offer? That the liberal agenda is being forced on the country? That we're withdrawing troops from Iraq, relaxing the grip of corporate control over our lives, instituting national healthcare, ensuring that everyone works for a living wage? What?

Maybe this is his way of blunting criticism he's expecting for his book, which actually points the finger at 3 reporters for distorting Al Gore's statements in 1999 and 2000. What a complete, utter fake.

  50. Steve Says:

Stephen Colbert covered this is his famous speech in DC a few months ago, with Bush in attendance -- "reality has a well-known liberal bias."

  51. Gene Says:

old media, old Europe, pre-9/11, post 9/11,WW3, global war on Terra etc.
: all sounds like part on the same plan Mark H.

  52. cynic Says:

Shouldn't be linking to Drudge, please. Let Walter II refresh hisownself.

    New Rule: stop watching ABC.

  53. Barbara Rice Says:

Does anyone know that Matt Drudge is a strongly closeted homosexual? The son of two ultra liberal PhDs from the Washington, DC suburb of Silver Spring, Matt decided to rebel, drop out of high school, and go to Hollywood to become famous. My gay friends knew Drudge when he was scrounging on the streets of Hollywood and helped the young East Coaster not collapse completely in the gutter. Matt's dad gave him a PC back in 1994 to help him make something of himself and boy did he ever. I'm not into being gratuitously nasty and outing people, but Drudge's background needs to be examined scrupulously, when people compare him with Walter Chronkite. Drudge's most recent atrocity is reprinting Sen. Allen's excerpting of his opponent Jim Webb's naughty bits on the Drudge Report. I hope Drudge can go Chaney himself.

  54. cynic Says:

Drudge was invited on Letterman shortly after gaining notoriety via the Clinton circus. Maybe Dave's worst guest ever (close second: Limbaugh, who was booed by the audience): he seemed to fancy himself as a sort of Walter Winchell, complete with a ridiculous fedora, which he perched on his shoe tip after sitting down. Total embarassment. I couldn't have been the only one watching that who assumed he was destined for obscurity after that fiasco. When did he become respectable?

  55. Bluedog49 Says:

Look, it's very simple. You compare Drudge to Cronkite, buzzzzzzzzzz!!!! Yer out! You've lost all credibility as a journalist and a human being.

  56. Bluedog49 Says:

Barbara, in David Brock's first book, "Blinded by the Right," he writes of how Drudge hit on him when he picked him up at the airport.

  57. Bluedog49 Says:

I must say, Halperin does have that modern Republican-Foley-Drudgy values look about him doesn't he? Hmmmmm.

  58. eve Says:

Great marketing plan by ABCNews -- run off at least half the viewing public by making idiot claims about not being conservative enough. Who wants to watch "news" that has lost all credibility of being based on reality.

And the conservatives won't believe it anyway because it didn't come from their god -- Limbaugh.

  59. eve Says:

Anybody have an email addy for this guy?

  60. Dan Says:

Does this man live in bizarro-world?

  61. Ken Green Says:

You mean like Dan Rather ? He went along and couldn't take any more. He spoke out and poof; gone. That kind of liberal media bias. These people should lose their broadcasting licenses and be banned from from working in the industry. Bring back the fairness doctrine and media ownership rules.

If you think the media has a liberal bias, you are either lying to yourself or retarded.

  62. tom+baker Says:

This Halperin looks like a college sophomore. Who's he blowing that he ends up in such a job? No doubt some would say he's probably blown Drudge, but who at ABC or Disney? Eisner?

There appears to be a kinky reverse Occam's Razor that applies to these wingers - think of the skeeviest, sleaziest answer, and that will be the answer that is most correct....wonder whether anyone has compared rates of herpes infection along political lines - results might surprise.

  63. Jake Says:

Why bother with bias when you can just steal the election?
    "How to steal an election."

  64. detepe Says:

#55 - I stopped watching ABC when they aired PW to 9/11. This bozo convinces me my decision was the right one.

Drudge isn't worthy to hold the door for Cronkite.

  65. ernesto Says:

press isn't so liberal! a transcript was released of a meeting between bush and journalists, and the journalists are openly recommending ways to make the iraq war appear more successful ... very hard to compete with that stuff... interesting transcript...bush dismisses facts inconvenient to him, group laughter during talk of civilian deaths...

    http://www.miserywatch.com/2006/10/transcript_rele.html

  66. kelso Says:

“rules our world.” What world do you live in Mr. Halperin?

  67. Rae Says:

ABC's stem cell research poll is a glowing example of how the people at ABC lack the critical thinking skills to understand the grievances of conservatives - much less prove they understand them. Is ABC truly not aware that the debate is with embryonic vs adult stem cell research, and not with stem cell research as a whole? Their opening statement of the issue was erroneous, and the poll questions were impossible to answer intelligently. Appalling! ABC needs to sharpen up.

  68. Zooey Says:

    Halperin's "Blue Steel" sucks.

  69. smafdy Says:

Pardon my ignorance, but I came rather late to the internets. Although i have never visited his web site (blog?), I seem to remember this Drudge fellow breaking some kind of story over the internets years ago, and getting all kinds of kudos for using the new media for investigative reporting.

It was during that time that I saw a picture of him. He was dressed like something from a Sam Spade movie. Fedora, white shirt with rolled-up sleeves - there may have even been suspenders. if I remember correctly, he was sitting at a desk with a bare-bulb, goose-neck lamp and a manual typewriter. I suspect there was a bottle of cheap whisky, a dirty glass and a gat in the desk drawer. Tres noir.

    This guy isn't a reporter - he's a freekin' cartoon!

Imagine making yourself up each day in order to present to the world the antithesis of your true personality (after all, if you were a normal, relatively well adjusted human being, you'd simply dress professionally, and let it go at that).

He's not Walter Cronkite - he's Walter Mitty.

and Mark Halperin is the archtypical, bit-part, corporate enabler of evil deeds in every movie that ever needed such a character to advance the plot.

Since I'm on the subject of old movies, Bush's character is Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes from the 1957 movie, "A Face in the Crowd" (if you haven't seen this movie, I suggest you find it and watch it - you'll be amazed w/the paralells to today's current political/media situation).

  70. Squeaky+McCrinkle Says:

And smafdy, please don't mention Bush and character in the same sentence, it's very misleading. :)

  71. loretta Says:

    more like an oxymoron, actually...

  72. Karim Says:

The media has a liberal bias? What is this man smoking?

  73. Amazed Says:

Until everyone starts complaining loudly about the obvious right wing media bias, the right wingers are going to continue to get away with 1) claiming that there's a "liberal" bias in the media (which the right wing "invented") in order to 2) aggressively force a right wing bias into the media to "balance" the liberal bias illusion.

And now what? With the continued media consolidation, and most newsreaders on TV as tools to prop up the worst presidency in American history, we now have a decidely, backdoored right wing bias in the media.

Until everyone works to point this out, the right wingers will continue to use this "liberal media bias" nonsense at every chance they get, in order to force even more right wing nonsense into every nook and cranny. It's not too late, but if the democrats don't take back Congress soon, there will be no way to start breaking up the media consolidation and right wing stranglehold we have now, and by 2008, it really may be too late to fix what will then be a gigantic problem.

  74. paul Says:

Amazed. This guy is just telling you the truth. All media is biased. I believe that most people understand that Limbaugh, Fox and the Wall Street Journal normally bat for the republicans, while the New York Times, CNN, and the alphabet networks bat for Democrats. Liberals that continue to believe that network news, the NYTimes and CNN are objective and unbiased are delusional or disingenuous.

  75. don myers Says:

One of the early comments said it all - just look & see who owns them.
There is certainly no liberal bias. Of course the mainstream media now controls what liberal actually means. If you would want health care for all or decent wages or education provided through college then you're a communist. I'm about ready to pull the plug on mainstream media - this medium does so much more for me.

  76. Stephan Says:

Laughable. Think Halperin is a right-wing ideologue? Wrong. There is no such thing. Right-wing ideology doesn't exist. Halperin, and countless others like him, is a well-heeled plutocrat whose sole aim is to accumulate wealth. His inflammatory remarks - and those of other supposed "right-wingers" - are intended to divide and conquer. Nothing more. 'Ideology" is merely a tool that the wealthy and those who serve them use to retain their power. While we engage in an "ideological" struggle, they amass staggering amounts of money and loot the nation's treasury via tax cuts. American politics is all about 2 steakhouses. Those who dine in Morton's Steakhouse are bound and determined to keep others OUT of their restaurant. So they use diversionary tactics - ideology, trivial issues (abortion, flag-burning, "terrorism," etc.) to keep others occupied and distracted. They don't care what you "plebians" talk about - as long as you don't pose the PIVOTAL question: why are you dining in OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE while others dine at Morton's? THIS is the crucial question which any rational citizen should pose. Don't allow Halperin and others to divert your attention from this issue. The gulf between the haves and the have-nots will continue to widen until we put "ideological" nonsense aside and start marching - in the direction of Morton's Steakhouse.

  77. Glenn Goldman Says:

This is excellent news to me.

The deeper these clowns dig their hole by trying to emulate Fox, the more they will end up maginalizing themselves. There are just so many hard-core right-wing nut jobs who are stupid enough to continue being fooled. You can fool some of the people all of the time.......

The fact is that more and more Americans are tuning out. I work with a lot of conservative people and all of them understand that the media is dominated by ruling class elites. The appeal to fear, bigotry and macho posturing is wearing very thin. The slick production, the endless Whoosh!!! sounds, the fast MTV editing is finally loosing its luster. More and more "water cooler" discussions are being led by well-informed progressives who get their information from quality online sources. It's fun to watch them cut through the right-wing bullshit like a warm knife through butter.

Let ABC become the major broadcast network of the right wing. In due time, falling market share will drive its executives to demand a shift toward the center in editorial policy.

  78. Think Progress » ABC’s The Note: Bush Gave His ‘Best TV Performance In Years’ On 60 Minutes Says:

[...] But ABC’s The Note — headed by an individual who has declared that traditional media to have a liberal bias — came to a different conclusion: “On Iraq, the President had his best TV performance in years, minueting with Scott Pelley on “60 Minutes,” but that was largely offset by the grim news coverage out of Iraq (and the Gang of 500 mindset, which demands a fight over funding).” [...]
