Cheney backs away from waterboarding approval.

“Vice President Cheney said yesterday that he was not referring to an interrogation technique known as ‘waterboarding’ when he told an interviewer this week that dunking terrorism suspects in water was a ‘no-brainer.’” Read the transcript and judge for yourself.

So just what other torture is there that involves dunking suspects in water? You mean there’s something else akin to waterboarding that is a ‘no-brainer’?

no, no, no, i was referring to the sponge baths we give them after an interrogation and then the dip in the pool they get to freshen them up … yeah, that’s it, that’s the ticket

    Bush, “We don’t torture.”

But is Bush looking to avoid an international war crimes tribunal?

It is so obvious that we should put Cheney on the very next jet to the Hague for crimes against humanity. Justice must be administered.

  8. RUCerioius says:

So was Cheney for being a lying Sack o’ Crap before he was against it?

Did Chaneny just say he had no brains. Sounds about right to me.

  11. ForTruth says:

“What were you referring to Mr. Cheney?”

Holding people underwater comes naturally to the bully. If you grew up in a place with swimming pools, you know what I am talking about. Being “dunked” is a blast, not.

  12. WC says:

Interviewer Scott Henen indicates he did not know what his listener meant when he made reference to a “dunk in the water.” Knowing this, how many of you agree that it was thus dumb to ask the VP about it?

  13. ggibson says:

Sooo are they water boarding Iraqis defending their country against foreign attack? Or just the AlQeada types?

They knew what the caller meant. Nice slice and dice.

  16. Fools+in+the+GOP says:

    Lets go through this.

Any President or Vice President that tells the would he advocates torture endangers all Americans because it will be used as a recruiting tool for terrorist organizations. So our representatives in Congress should immediately call for his resignation.

But in todays world, a republican freak show, the President or Vice President could take a dump on stage, wipe his ass with the Constitution and half the people would say I don’t like what he did and the other half would say he can do anything he wants because he is a good Christian.

  17. Jason+M.+Hendler says:

Sorry, but even on this board, you guys are running out of gas. I just don’t sense the motivation of past elections, which is understandable given that both the Clintonistas and the mainstream media is cutting your throats. Nothing more disheartening than your own team tripping you up.

  18. bryan says:

Funny how we’re constantly misunderstanding what these folks are saying. So if he wasn’t referring to waterboarding, what was he referring to?

Jason, we all don’t have the motivation on this board because its still morning for much of us, and that Friday night hangover has to wear off. Maybe you should hang with people who have a more similar lifestyle dude.

  22. katy says:

…So if he wasn’t referring to waterboarding, what was he referring to?
    Comment by bryan — October 28, 2006 @ 12:05 pm

that’s what i’m trying to find the video for… i saw it this morning, it was an outside briefing (?), and the reporter asked that question (”what does ‘dunkin’ mean?) of tony , who answered, “(shrug) dunking (heh)”…

ya just wanna slap that tony snow, know what i mean? grrrrrr!

  23. ForTruth says:

When we were kids, swimming in the pool, someone would get “dunked”. That’s what Cheney was referring to.

  24. Josh P says:

What a bunch of liars. We all know that “dunking a terrorist’s head in water” is reich-wing doubletalk for “water boarding”. Anyone who does not believe that is an idiot. These people are criminals.

  25. Karim says:

Waterboarding is cool, as long as we’re the ones doing it.

  26. tom+baker says:

Jason’s really on some good drugs…..get those from Rush, bud? Come on over to my house J, and I’ll show you all about some motivation, Lousiville-style.

They can’t even lie well, can they? Little kids are better at it than these losers, and who is a bigger loser than Dick?

No member of this regime deserves more harsh and cruel punishment than Dick Cheney. He and Rummy should be relegated to Gitmo for life, guarded by and “cared for” by the widows and orphans they’ve created all over the world.

  27. nofltwlt says:

Ok, if he wasn’t referring to waterboarding, then what was he talking about?

  28. nofltwlt says:

This can all be cleared up very easilty, just ask Cheney exactly what he was referring to when he issued is “no brainer” statement.

    This should be good!

  29. james+k.+sayre says:

…later on, we’ll be waterboarding, walking in a fascist wonderland…

  30. Mongo says:

So he’s “backing away” from the notion of waterboarding? What else could he have been thinking about when discussing an “interrogation technique” that involves dunking a person in water? Why doesn’t someone ask him the specific question? If it wasn’t water boarding, what was he talking about?

  31. Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party says:

He did mean waterboarding and he thought that his comment would go over well with voters, particularly with his evil Republican constituents. Since it didn’t go over well, he’s now trying to say it’s not what he meant.

  32. Fools+in+the+GOP says:

We all know what he meant, we pretend there might be a misunderstanding. This is a waste of time. We have a Prez and his VP who advocate torture. End of story. Americans will do little to nothing about it because they are sheep.

  33. Dog_named_Boo says:

See he was talking about taking the terrusts swimming, you know a good old fashion ‘dunking’ you know, Baptising them =)

To watch Lynne Chainee and her craven, curdled husband squirm and spew their petulant non-sense is saddening to see what our nations leadership has de-evolved to. And I don’t want to even get started on Unca Donnie and that there otha plain mis spoken feller…..

When the corporate/religio/militant/pharmaceutico imperialists decided to dumb down and sex up the American populace, they seem to have forgotten to put a firewall between themselves and their de-education programs.

Tell me this guy is just insane. This isn’t going to happen…This isn’t going to happen…

  36. SouthwestBob says:

The reality is that bush/cheney/rummy/rove all believe they are above the law. They will occasionally slip up and say what they believe to be true. However, when they realize they have gone too far, they will 1) Deny they said it, or 2) Say they were misunderstood.

This misadministration is now forced to use every possible misleading and nasty technique possible to keep from being held accountable by the American Voters. We can expect a barrage of mis-information and “exciting new developments” on the war on terror as well as shocking revealations (all at the last minute) about Democratic candidates in the next ten days.

Stand by, the fun is just beginning.

Well, that’s honest. Your own team is tripping you up, Jason. Is that why you’re avoiding the Bush calling Jeff Lamberti “Dave” thread? Because it’s so painfully obvious that Bush is hurting the Republicans now?

  38. unbelievable says:

So, when Cheney is being “dunked in water” (a.k.a. head repeatedly submerged in the Leavenworth prison commode) himself, he’ll be for it?

  39. Marie says:

When are you all going to learn? The United States of America is no longer a Democracy but run by a DICTATOR? They are going to do what they want. Don’t believe it. Any leader who tells his people that he will make the laws of the land without the consent of the people ( ie. in this case the congress) and puts himself above the law is a dictator. So now we have someone who is trying to get around the word water boarding. Well the fools have opened a new can of worms. Now they have passed a law allowing torture. Only now other nations can can also change there laws and anyone they catch they can do the same to the US Forces as Bush and his cohorts will to to the people that they catch. I would not want to be in the Armed Forces knowing that I am going to be tortured by the same methods the United States now say they have a right to do.

  46. Kathy Seivers says:

Don’t any of you people realize that the interrogators are baptizing the terror suspects to save them? I mean, unless they want to be Methodists, dunking is absolutely necessary. And because some of them are soooooo bad, they have to be dunked several times without letting them come up for air.

I can think of a few things more disheartening:
    1. Having your House speaker indicted.
    2. Having your VP condone the use of torture.
    3. Having one of your reps make sexual advances towards teenage boys.
    4. Being in charge of a Congress with 16% approval ratings.
    5. Having a president with a 34% approval rating.
    6. Having your a$$ handed to you on Nov. 7.

  48. ex says:

I can’t think of anything more disheartening then,
A president saying : Quit shoving the US Consitution down my throat. It’s nothing but a Goddamn piece of paper. But I guess he lied to that also when he swore on the Bible.
Hmmmmm We really showed the world how to run a country. Maybe thats one of the reasons other countries don’t want to be like the America….

  49. ex says:

Well in reality she told Wolfe to shut up in a polite way as the President told certian news organizations to also shut up about reporting on him and what his people are doing. You know they did also. The Pres rewarded them with new rooms where they could work out of.

I wonder what Clark Kent would say to being told to shut up?

I am so sick of these lying neocons.

Cheney: I’m for dunking the ragheads But i’m not for torture, but dunking them isn’t torture, they just get wet, see, But we do, umm,err don’t waterboard, but it’s not torture.

Sick sick sick administration we have in power.

  53. BigCynic.com says:

I have a better solution: Throw suspected terrorists into a lake. If they float, it means they’re made of wood and therefore a terrorist. If they sink and drown, it means they’re innocent.

dicki boy, you don’t have to start lying again. you have plenty of cover.

  55. Jake says:

Some reporter HAD BETTER ask him SPECIFICALLY what he thought “dunk in the water” meant.

What the hell else could it mean? That’s what they were talking about in the interview. Cheney knew that it meant torture. It’s a no-brainer.

  56. Zooey says:

    From a thread below:

Today, Press Secretary Tony Snow insisted that Cheney’s comments did not endorse waterboarding. Snow said that Cheney does not comment on specific interrogation techniques and is “not a guy who slips up.”

    He slipped in the water…

  57. paulanderson says:

My uncle was waterboarded by the Germans during WWII. He was a resistance fighter and they wanted to know the name of his contact in the occupying forces. He never gave him up. For years, while I was growing up we saw this gentle man (who lost all of his hair from alopecia just after his release) suffer the obvious effects of this traumatic experience.

Trust me, Mr Cheney and Mr Bush, waterboarding is torture.

  58. Mike says:

he was not referring to an interrogation technique known as ‘waterboarding’

Of course not. They call the technique ‘bobbing’. This is one of those ’stay the course’ vs ‘adapt to win’ types of distinctions.

A friend of mine sent me this off of youtube:

Then what the hell was he talking about? The game at the county fair? Tricky Dick.

    http://www.correntewire.com/republican_people_of_the_lie_must_disgorge_the_abu_ghraib_child_rape_photos_videos_judge_rules

They are guilty of so much more than waterboarding. The wingnuts approve of it. Do you think they would approve of the rape of these children?
Pass this on to EVERY wingnut site you can think of. Do it now. Too much stuff waiting to come out after the election. America can’t wait for that.
If bush’s christian base approves of this they are not christians. Tell them that.
