Lugar Repudiates Rumsfeld: ‘We Cannot Relax’»

On Thursday, Donald Rumsfeld told critics of the administration’s Iraq policy that they should “just back off, take a look at it, relax” and “understand” the situation there is “complicated” and “difficult.”

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN) took issue with Rumsfeld’s comments yesterday on CNN. “[W]e’ve got to keep our eye on the ball,” Lugar said. “It is urgent. We cannot relax.”

Transcript:

I would just say that the president and the Congress, however the election comes out, will have a lot to do with our leadership and who does what. But for the moment, it seems to me we’ve got to keep our eye on the ball. It is urgent. We cannot relax.

We should all just sit back relax, kick it and chill out. Just lay around and watch our troops gte ripped to shreds in a civil war that doesn’t involve us, other than we started it.

  2. Hardy+Haberman Says:

Oh now the Republicans start to wake up? They have been sitting back and relaxing for the past 6 years. About time. Rumsfeld has no ideas and no leadership, his plan is to wait until the enemy leads us into a complete disaster. Time for all these criminals to go.

  3. wisedup Says:

Echo SpudgeBoy….only 600,000+ have died total…what’s the rush?

  4. pgw Says:

apparently, rummy does not give lugar a boehner

  5. Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party Says:

Lugar is just a Republican shill trying to get crossover votes for his party by pretending to disagree with the Bush administration.

  6. Yachts+and+Lattes Says:

#5: Lugar is unopposed in Indiana, so no need for crossover votes. Despite that, he’s serious bipartisan cred.

Maybe HE’s the reason that Indiana’s congressional slate is going blue this time!

  7. mike Says:

this guy has consistently been one of the few republicans with the ability to view the war in iraq not through the prism of “george bush is a living god”

Over the years, Lugar has been one of the less objectionable Republicans, along with Specter and a very few others.

Certainly he could have been more vocal on these issues 2-3 years ago, but the same can be said for most of the Democrats who have suddenly found their vocal chords and gonads again.

  9. katy Says:

just heard - barack obama on franken tomorrow…

  10. marcus+robinson Says:

Republicans hold the power and what have they done?? RELAXED!!! and look what we got in this country and Iraq. Time for a new direction in america. THROW THE DUMBS OUT!!!

  11. Pissed+Off Says:

I think the GOP crowd has finally figured out that this neo-con crap shovelled by Cheney, Kristol and company was not such a good idea to begin with, and if allowed to continue, it will make sure no Republican is ever elected in this country again.

So, not only they are pandering for votes in Nov. 2007, they are also trying to hang on to policitcal life as they know it. Remember, there is Presidential elections in 2008 and another round of congressional elections in 2009.

  12. DanF Says:

#6 Lugar is unopposed in Indiana, so no need for crossover votes. Despite that, he’s serious bipartisan cred. (and #8)

Lugar is my Senator. He can be relied upon to support the most odious of Republican and Bush Administration legislation and judicial nominees. He talks a great moderate game and he will work with Senators across the isle, but make no mistake - he votes the party line even when the party line is purile.

I will give him this; he responds quickly to the letters I write him.

  13. Why+are+there+so+many+pedophile+republicans? Says:

RELAX-Don’t do it, when you wanta get too it. Relax don’t do it…when you want come…..Big freak’n Circle Jerk!!!!

GOP: Groping Old Pedophiles or Gay Old Perverts whatever you call them, just make sure you bring napkin to the party.

  14. ScottDrakeISU Says:

I’ll agree with Dan F. Lugar is my senator as well. And he does vote party lines even when it’s painfully obvious he shouldn’t. But, he hasearned some bipar. cred. recently by supporting a Dem mayor in Indianapolis and the mayor’s plans to reorg. local gov’t. The Indiana House won’t allow the change because it would spell success for the Dem. mayor. Not good when it comes time for the mayor to run for governor.

Dan F. is also correct that Lugar’s staff responds quickly to E-mails and requests for info.

  15. HeartlandLiberal Says:

Lugar is my Senator too. He responds to me emails. He even responded to my demand Bush and Cheney be impeached, disagreeing, but hoping we could work on issues we agreed on.
The problem is, and I never fail to point this out to him, every vote he has cast that enabled the invasion of Iraq, and destruction of the Constitution, and the facilitation and legitimization of torture and suspension of Habeas Corpus, is his responsibility, he has repeatedly and unrelentingly enabled the most corrupt, henious administration in our history.
I ask him in every email when he is going to have enough, and start voting for American and Americans, not the Bush crime cabal.

  16. bs Says:

o don’t forget, that it will all work itself out. o’ really rummdumm. how is it working NOW or the past 3 yrs and how about the last 6, prick.

  17. JPark Says:

#8 How is Spectre not objectionable? He says all the right thing to look reasonable and then gives cover later. He is the worst. At least the Delays and Coburns and Santorums are honest about their right-wingery.

  18. DutchHenry Says:

Lugar is just a Republican shill trying to get crossover votes for his party by pretending to disagree with the Bush administration.

Comment by Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party

-You are absolutely correct Lugar had no choice but to echo Sen Biden after he (Biden)answered the question. Please remember folks Lugar is the one who was with the WH on Bolton and supported the Admin on many more policies.
