In a new column, Weekly Standard editor Fred Barnes attributes Indiana conservatives’ electoral problems in part to Gov. Mitch Daniels’s (R) “bold” step to “impose daylight saving time throughout the state.”
What a simpleton. Fred Barnes has also denied evidence of anthropogenic climate change on Fox News’s Beltway Boys. On July 29, 2006, when co-host Mort Kondracke cited recent climate data, Barnes shrugged it off, saying “so?” Kondracke stated, “Global warming is a fact.”
“Yeah, but who caused it? You don’t know, ” Barnes snorted.
“Humans,” Kondracke replied.
Barnes shot back, “No! You don’t know that.”
As I said. Fred Barnes is a simpleton. A republican simpleton.
I’m feeling a little out of sorts myself now that we’ve changed the time. Everything feels a little…off, and we’ve done daylight savings here in Florida for years. Any footage of the conservatives in Indiana wandering around not knowing what to do next?
I live in Northern Indiana, and it IS an issue up here!! Along with the selling of the Toll Road to a foreign company, the DST thing has pissed off alot of people.
My parents live in Hostettler’s district, are Catholic and usually vote Republican because of the abortion issue. This year, they’re so upset about the war that they’re voting Democratic (I guess the fact that Ellsworth’s pro-life too makes this a non-issue). We just this weekend had an hour long conversation about politics including the war, the stupid wall, arrogance, FUD, etc., and though we’ve talked about the daylight savings time issue and the Indiana Toll Road both in the past, it didn’t come up as a reason for their switching.
Of course, Evansville is in a part of Indiana that has always been on Central time with DST, and is nowhere near the Toll Road, so maybe that’s part of it and the rest of the state really cares. Or, Fred Barnes is an ignoramus.
Let me clarify- Yes, there are tons of people here pissed about the war, huge deficits etc…..
but I think Indiana is gonna go alot bluer than the CW advises because of the tipping point of DST & The Toll Road.
Remember, the Toll Road cuts right thru IN-02.
Buh-Bye Count Chocula!!
Republicans actually have to believe ridiculous things to avoid admitting how badly their party has governed. Willfull self deception is a requirement for the Kool Aid drinkers who make up today’s GOP.
Hard to believe Barnes & Mort Kondracke were once mainstays of TNR and considered (moderately) liberal. Gotta love the name of their Foxfest: The Beltway Boys. Boys? How old are these two codgers?
well, it sure messed up MY life… i used to be able to watch tv programs an hour later if i missed the illinois time broadcast as my local cable co carries indiana stations also… jeesh!

Up here in MN we’ve been on DST for many years & we still don’t know exactly why.
Is it for farmers?
(They would be up anyway)
Politicians?
(They never come this far North)
Government?
(No, this costs money to initiate)
Anyway, one 25 hour day a year is OK, at least I got out golfing
yesterday!
Daylight Savings Time – leave it on all year round and be done with it. Our current Savings Time/Standard Time switching every six months is stupid and pointless. Maybe the State of Indiana could show the rest of some real leadership and leave Daylight Savings Time on all year round…
Cheers.
I live in Indiana… we didnt really care for the change, but hardly anyone complained… We just switched again yesterday and I have not heard a single person any where complaining about it.
I occasionally read the online version of my local paper here in Kokomo, IN and I can tell you what I see … I see a huge trend in people from a couple years ago who were all I LOVE BUSH gungho to know either outright being hostile towards Bush OR saying he messed it all up and they dont want their name attached to Iraq anymore… plus the 20% die hards that wont change their pro bush tune until their preacher tells them to.
Sorry Fred. The Rs are in trouble because they are incompetent. Instead of trying to solve this nation’s problems, they have spent a year on every divisive issue they could conjure up.
They don’t care about average Americans. They only care about their corporate masters and the phony/false Christians.
Paddy, I know what you mean about the time. My inlaws live in Valpo, I’m from central Indiana. I’ve always referred to my time zone as JURT (Jacked-up Redneck Time). Because it was obviously a bit beyond our understading to do this years ago.
Sen. Lugar the only Republican I would have voted for this year, but his party screwed it up. The only problem is the Democrats wouldnt run anyone against him so I had to vote for the libertarian who has absolutely no chance of winning.
Indiana is not as Red as Faux News would like you to think…
NeoConservativism is a movement that easily enraptures people with too much education, too much money, and not enough common sense. People in Indiana are adequately educated, barely getting by, and full of common sense. In other words most of those Goldwater Conservatives/Real Republicans arent falling for this whack-job agenda.
DST is a big issue for rural voters, mostly GOP and Independents. Most people who live on farms have at least one off-farm income. DST means less daylight in the morning to do chores, so they have to be done in the dark. This is more of an issue than many realize.
However. one need look no further than Kokomo and Delphi to know why Chocola is in trouble. With GM and Ford cutting production, the axe will fall on Delphi and other parts mfg. Workers are taking wimpy buyouts now to avoid the axe tomorrow. There are no other jobs that pay as well so many voters are getting a paycut. Paycuts trickle down into the service economy and some of these towns may dry up and blow away. So much for the Bush economy. OH and IN parts Mfg are bleeding the best paying jobs under Bushonomics. The economy may be better on the coast, but who in the midwest can sell their home for enough to move?
I live in IN2 and we are hoping to boot out Count Chocola. The time issue is a big deal here because we were not on the same time zone in the whole state. We still aren’t and it’s a bigger mess than ever before. Our man Bitch oh I mean Mitch sold the toll road and that continues to be the most talk about issue here. So Fred, you are an old fool if you think you know Indiana, you don’t even know Washington.
I am very impressed with your site. The quality of the design and content makes it a real winner! Thanks again for a great site and a great resource on the net.
Yeah, it has to do with Iraq.

October 30th, 2006 at 12:34 pmI was living in Indiana when this happened… were people annoyed? yes. that annoyed? not hardly.
October 30th, 2006 at 12:38 pmJeez, I can’t type this morning. That should be “Yeah it has nothing to do with Iraq.”
I am gonna get some coffee then come back.
October 30th, 2006 at 12:41 pmWhy does daylight saving time hate our freedom?
October 30th, 2006 at 12:45 pmLast week it was the explosion in domestic cats that was the problem. next week it is left handed people.

It directly allows the Tarrawrists to stay lurking in the caves plotting the end of our freedom loving Nation
Everyone knows that.
