set up to locate an abducted soilder on the orders of the Iraqi Prime Minister. The AP has the story:
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki flexed his political muscle Tuesday and won U.S. agreement to lift military blockades on Sadr City and another Shiite enclave where an American soldier was abducted.
U.S. forces, who had set up the checkpoints in Baghdad last week as part of an unsuccessful search for the soldier, drove away in Humvees and armored personnel carriers at the 5 p.m. deadline set by al-Maliki.
Looks like George W. Bush had his "permission slip" denied by Nouri AL Maliki.

October 31st, 2006 at 7:03 pmI'm sorry, have we completely lost control over there? This is a sure sign that we cannot work in cooperation with the Iraqis to truly form a Democratic government. How many more US soldiers have to die before everyone else gets it? The bottom line is that occupations do not work in the short run. If we are willing to give up 50,000 casualties over the next 40 years, we may make a small difference. But then again Israel is a prime example of how an occupation can last for decades and not get any better...

October 31st, 2006 at 7:05 pmOK Republicans! How does it feel to have the US military under the command of an Iraqi???
You guys frothed at the mouth for years about fighting under a blue hat (the UN)! How does it feel now?

October 31st, 2006 at 7:12 pmJason.....74% of Americans DO NOT BELIEVE JOHN KERRY SHOULD APOLOGIZE NOR DO THEY BELIEVE THE RHETORIC OF THE REPUBLICAN SPIN MACHINE THAT THIS WAS ABOUT THE TROOPS, BUT RATHER THAT THE COMMENT (IN CONTEXT) WAS ABOUT THE LACK OF EDUCATION IN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. Speaking as an honorably discharged veteran (not once, not twice, but 3 times honorably discharged) BUSH IS A F@#K UP. As a NCO (I am sure you know what a NCO is, because so familar with the military), I would gladly follow John Kerry into a military situation, because I believe in his courage and his knowledge. I believe he would not knowingly lead me into the debacle that George Bush has done to our troops now!!! We in the military have all sorts of words for military dodgers...LIKE GEORGE BUSH, RUMSFELD, CHENEY....none of them are good!!! COME BACK WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR DD214....THIS MIGHT LEND YOU THE CREDIBILITY THAT YOU SO SORE LACK. P.S. You can look at the poll yourself....go to CNN.com look under Lou Dobbs web page!! MORON

More belittling comments to the other posters.
Like when you called someone Grandmal Seizure, when almost everyone on TP knows my daughter suffers from Epilepsy. You refused to apologize, the same day you made sexually unwanted comments to me.
This coming from someone who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.
Piece of work.
My advice to everyone on TP,
October 31st, 2006 at 7:32 pmIgnore him. Totally ignore him. He is not right, and I don't mean in a "Harold Ford" kind of way. (another lovely right wing tactic...)

Jason you need to get your butt off the couch and help out Macaa man--some one like you who leaves the killing and dying to some one else. Santorum-your kind of guy.
and what about the poor grunt who was taken and his buds being ordered to leave him? sure the bigger picture here is awful, but the personal nature of this post is haunting.

back on topic: this post shows in stark, personal terms that the American war in iraq is over. With all the focus on Kerry today - who is going to stand up and say:
October 31st, 2006 at 7:57 pm"who do you ask to be the last to die for a mistake?"
I have an answer for that one.
He's also deluded, because when Zooey told me he had Asperger's (at first I thought it was a joke, then found out it wasn't), I asked her online if I should apologize for laughing at her comment of his condition.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big 'ol weenie with a open heart.
October 31st, 2006 at 8:00 pmSorry, Terry.
October 31st, 2006 at 8:02 pmYes, let's get back on topic.
btrue - fat lady hasn't sung on the election yet, dude. All they have to do is get close enough - the voter suppression on the Ohio model does the rest. Read some Palast on New Mexico. That's what you are up against. I agree with 'man on dog' Hendler: the dems at best gain the house, the senate is no way. Hope I'm wrong - November is a cruel month to be on the streets behind the barricade. I want to be at Sharon Cox's barricade.
October 31st, 2006 at 8:08 pmThere is no way that our troops took and followed orders from any Iraqi. Ain't ever gonna happen, at least not while Cheney and Rumsfeld are alive. This episode is a deliberately crafted pre-election stunt to create the appearance that the Iraqis are "standing up", as part of a broader effort to create the appearance that Iraq is "turning a corner". It is just another feint, however. Iraq is bad and will keep getting worse as long as our troops continue to occupy the country.
And, just in case I haven't said it enough lately, Hendler is a real mess.
October 31st, 2006 at 8:10 pm#47 I share a similar concern. Rove is confident because he knows that just so long as he can get the base to turn out, and make it look like it a horse race, he and the gang will be able to nudge a dozen critical races with his stable of voter suppression tactics.

November 1st, 2006 at 12:20 amSoldier was killed recently by IPs in Sadr City. There was suspicion that this IP unit was colluding with Shia death squads. The suspicion turned out to be true when the MP Co was led into an ambush by their Iraqi Police counterparts. And on top of that our government listed the soldiers death as being from a road side bomb, not hostile gunfire. The soldiers commander caught it when he read the DOD report on his soldier's death. At the very least I think families should be given the respect of knowing that there loved one died fighting, not driving around in a vehicle and unsuspectingly getting blown out of it. That completely dishonors his death. They lied because they dont want people to know our exit is blocked by those who dont want an end to this war on both sides.
That event alone should have been the catalyst for the immediate withdrawal of troops from that area, let the IPs live or die by their own sword. Sadr city has always been a spot of much contention.
November 1st, 2006 at 5:50 amDia de los Muertos celebrations for the next two days…

Here in Mexico, Nov 1 is to celebrate the dead kids while Nov 2 is to celebrate dead adults. See, why have just one party or off-work day when you can have 2? Here in Mexico we worked like hell...right.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:48 amThe US has expended hundreds of billions of dollars on Iraq. And for what? To make Sadr the terrorist-thug the most powerful individual in Iraq.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:54 amSo America has abandon its search for a missing American soldier. Classic cut and run operation. I wonder what the rank and file in the military think of this political stunt.
Of course this gets far less play than Kerry leaving the word "us" out of a misspoken sentence. Go figure.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:11 amIf things continue to escalate this way, there will not be a question of cutting and running. It will be a question of getting thrown out of Iraq by the Iraqi government. No milestones, not benchmarks, just plain "Yankee go home". I wonder how this will be spun this into a victory.
Mr.Hendler, do you really think, that Kerry's remarks are the turning point for the Republicans in this campaign? Do you think that now you can win, that late in the day? Dream on. BTW you once used to post quite informed, albeit rightist comments. As I'm not a regular here: When did you start to change into this abusive kind of troll. Anything happened to you? Have lost faith in your cause ? Can't acknowledge defeat ?
November 1st, 2006 at 10:58 amThis was done to prevent a large scale eruption of violence, larger than usual, in Sadr City before the US elections. A US soldier was sacrificed to get corrupt Republican politicians elected.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:21 amAhh yes, Halloween is the one time of year when women who otherwise would never dress like a slut, dress like a slut, I love it.

November 1st, 2006 at 5:03 pmThe reason TV commercials on Thursday night cost so much
is that they are really the last chance to get to your audience before the weekend. The messages that are planted on Thursday are the ones that bounce around inside of people's skulls all weekend.
So what do we do:
1. Front page the story in exactly the frame you laid out. Bush abondoned one of our boys behind enemy lines.
2. Raise the emotional level. One of our boys is a hostage of Iraqi thugs RIGHT NOW.
He is sitting in some hellhole while Bush plays dress-up as the commander in cheif.
3. Highlight it on talk Radio. Send The Al Franken Show an Email and ask them to lead the news with this.
4. Use whatever media connections you have to ask to get this story highlighted. From calling your local newspaper to calling in your best connection
