Here is how the Pentagon publicly described the situation in Iraq in an email newsletter sent out on Monday:
Here’s how the Pentagon described the situation in Iraq in a classified briefing conducted just days earlier, according to a report in the New York Times. From a secret slide called “Index of Civil Conflict”:

Americans deserve to be told the truth about what’s going on in Iraq.

Republicans lie. That’s what they do. Why be surprised?
November 1st, 2006 at 9:51 amWell, if the invading army says so…I believe it.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:51 amOur men and women are fighting bravely, and John Kerry is calling them stupid.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:52 amApparently this is their new “Ministry of Truth?”
November 1st, 2006 at 9:54 amIraq…economy…it just goes on, but remember:
Vote at the places they offer chicken and a forty…
November 1st, 2006 at 9:54 amWonder what Kerry thinks? ….uh, John Kerry where are you?…come out come out whereever you are.
ROTFL
November 1st, 2006 at 9:58 amAdd to this the Pentagon request for $50 bil in 2007 in emergency transportation for wounded soldiers. That would be $50 bil emergency funds - outside of the budget and therefore not part of current costs of the war.
Kerry insulted Bush - clumsy, yes - but the insult was at Bush’s not doing his “homework” and getting bogged down in Iraq.
November 1st, 2006 at 9:59 amLeave it to Repugs to twist words and intentions — you would think their guy never mangles a phrase!
I was going to list a few here, but there are so many, I changed my mind.
Jason proves himself to be just another mouthpiece for the Rove spin machine.

Keep on making demeaning comments about women here, Jason. Thats brave.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:01 amLooneyTuneGuy, Jason doesn’t need to be a mouthpiece. Kerry has that job all locked up.
ROTFL……CRAZY LIBERALS
November 1st, 2006 at 10:02 amIf this is what the Plan for Victory (#27?) looks like I shudder to think what defeat would resemble. By the way #3, Senator, Deocrated Vietnam Veteran, Kerry’s comments were taken out of context ( shocking inhale)
November 1st, 2006 at 10:06 amridiculing him is the best you can do? Heh! Wait till your gang of theives, pedophiles, wife beaters, cocktail waitress stranglers and general bunglers have to, in the words of the fearful leader, “meet justice”. Keep pushing your support for staying the course in Iraq it only makes y’all look that much more “appealing” to the voters. By the way have you looked into enlisting, I hear they are hiring.
I’ll post it here also for the benefit of Mr. Hendler and the like. This is what Kerry has said in response to the uproar from the Republicans. Jason read it all and then let’s discuss:
“If anybody thinks that a veteran would somehow criticize more than 140,000 troops serving in Iraq and not the President and his people who put them there, they’re crazy. It’s just wrong. This is a classic GOP textbook, Republican campaign tactic. I’m sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won’t take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes.”
If you assume otherwise YOU ARE WRONG. As in not right, missed the concept, out of touch, lost in your own fantasy and many more to come if you continue to push factured logic. Understand?
November 1st, 2006 at 10:11 amMMMmmm…Kerry served in Vietnam…Bush didnt serve at all.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:12 amBush is mouthing a lot about what is war…who is the mouthpiece again, Ben?

The BBC (God bless ‘em) had a piece on their site yesterday about the new Pentagon propaganda department designed to “correct the mis-information” appearing in particular on the Web.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:14 amIncluded in the article was reference to the destruction of a major ammunition dump on the outskirts of Bagdhad, caused by a single insurgent mortar round.
Apparently video footage of the event was all over web-sites from Arab sources.
On the day of that event, the BBC had a “breaking news” posting that lasted for about an hour, before disapearing.
I looked all over American MSM, and found not one report of the event………..
This reference yesterday on the BBC was the first I have seen anything about it since.
The situation over in Iraq is far worse than most can even comprehend.
HAROLD FORD NOW CALLING FOR JOHN KERRY TO APOLOGIZE!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:14 amLet’s see, what’s the old saying:
November 1st, 2006 at 10:15 am“Desperate times call for desperate measures”
Must be desperate times for the GOP, eh?

ROTFL….you guys need to stop while you can.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:15 amand by the way, why so many negative ad campaigns? Can’t the majority of the House and Senate just come out a say “we’ve stayed the course for the last 6 years, and look where we are today. Vote for us, and we’ll continue to stay the course”
November 1st, 2006 at 10:17 amnuff said
Hey Juan go ask why Casey has asked him not to come to Maryland. Ask why he cancelled Iowa. Why he cancelled Minnesota. Why Imus told him to shut up and go home and ride his bike.
ROTFL….you guys are making this too easy.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:17 amSadly, screaming about Sen. Kerry is the best than Hendler and Ben can do. Otherwise they would be forced to try and defend or prop up this administration’s handling of Iraq, and I would imagine that’s the last debate one of the 30% would want to have right now.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:19 amCoiled Cobra ready to Strike Iran?
1st of November 2006
by Jay Randal
The Bush Regime’s armada of naval vessels sits coiled like a deadly cobra snake, off the coastline of Iran, so new war hovers over the Middle East poised to strike!
Coming war on Iran has not been a secret, but nobody knows the exact time and day that Bush has decided to launch an attack, so we all wait for a hammer to drop!
Some of us believe that Dubya wants the Iranians to lash out first, to justify his premeditated plan to attack them, but he might stage a “Gulf of Tonkin” incident!
Desperation of the GOP to hold onto power in House, and Senate, could prompt the Bush Regime to order an attack on Iran even up to the very day of election!
Pentagon whistle-blowers claim that all the weapons are in place, in the Persian Gulf region, to commence an assault on Iran and to bomb the crap out of them!
The Iranian government knows that war is imminent, so their military has been preparing for the onslaught, so Bush could walk into a trap and meet his Waterloo?
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)
November 1st, 2006 at 10:19 amMEMPHIS — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. issued a statement this morning calling on U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to apologize for comments that Republicans including President Bush contend disparage U.S. troops in Iraq.
“Whatever the intent, Senator Kerry was wrong to say what he said,†Rep. Ford said. “He needs to apologize to our troops.â€
ROTFL…..keep defending him…..you guys are really stupid.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:20 amThis kind of reporting is why blogs need to exist! Keep up the great work TP.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:20 amIf the Republicans wish to parse Kerry’s statement, then the Democrats should keep bringing up Bush’s infamous remark- “Bring ‘em on”!. Bush challenged those in Iraq to attack U.S. forces, they accepted the challenge, and as a result over 2800 military personnel have been killed because of Bush’s amazingly callous remark. Utterring that incredibly stupid statement should be grounds for impeachment as well as a reason to be thrown into prison for a very long time.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:20 amAnd I thought everything was going so well…wow I’m not very informed.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:21 am#22, bluefish,
I will quote Bill Schnieder of CNN:
“John Kerry’s statement reinforces the Democratic Party image of consdescension and elitism ….”
This is killing your prospects, which is why Harold Ford, who is waaaaay down in the polls, is demanding an apology from John Kerry.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:22 amWhat a pathetic bunch of paid trolls we have here. Desperation has set in for the Right Wing. All they have is a stupid comment by John Kerry.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:22 amBlue, where is Pelosi? why isn’t the house minority leader out where everyone can see her?

November 1st, 2006 at 10:24 amAdministration Iraq Lie #21,472 is pointed out, and the trolls can only point out that either: 1. They’re too dumb to get a joke, or 2. They are faking outrage. Let’s see, the sun rose in East this AM, yup, the shrub supporters are still lying and/or mentally not up to task.
When we finally give up on the folly in Iraq, who’s going to get the blame from the right wing? Surely not Bush, or any of his appointees. It can’t be the Republican Congress that hasn’t exercised proper oversight. They won’t be able to blame the Dems, the Rep’s never let them near a decision. Sooner or later, they’ll be wrongfully blaming the troops. And it won’t be this make-believe blame type stuff, like we’re seeing here.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:25 am#24, Ben,
As seen in #28, your approach is having a detrimental affect on DRxJ - keep it up ….
November 1st, 2006 at 10:25 amI can really identify with Foley. I mean, young boys are rather cute, aren’t they?
November 1st, 2006 at 10:27 am#19 Hiding? Sen. Kerry’s bitchslap of the entire GOP? I hardly consider that hiding. Where was George during Vietnam? Dick? Tom? Dare we talk about hiding when things get tough…buch of pussies.

November 1st, 2006 at 10:29 amWhat’s the difference between Vietnam and Iraq? Bush knew how to get out of Vietnam.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:29 amI prefer women’s clothing. So what! Let’s talk about something really important…like John Kerry or Billy Clinton’s penis.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:32 amOh, this is just too precious!
Ben is bringing up Imus, one of the more biased talking heads, as if he’s got some special powers of partisan spin!
If that’s the best you right-whiners can do, I’ll look forward to hearing you complain about Speaker Pelosi cleaning up the mess you’ve made in the House!
ROTFLMFAO!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:32 amI AM A SCREAMING SISSY BOY!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:33 amOK, who’s hijacked Mr. Hendler’s moniker?
That’s something the right-whiners do when they get desperate!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:33 am#40, Juan C,
Forget what John Kerry claims to have intended. Perhaps English is your second language, but what he clearly STATED implies that service men and women in the Iraq war are STUPID. This is disastrous for Dems hopes in the midterm election, as seen by Harold Ford demanding John Kerry apologize. Harold Ford clearly feels that he cannot win if John Kerry doesn’t apologize.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:34 amNearly everyone appears elitist next to reichwing knuckle-draggers .
November 1st, 2006 at 10:34 amWho is hijacking my name? I’m going to leave if you keep it up.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:35 amSo Kerry botched a joke. Anyone with just a spark of intelligence could see that he was attacking the Bush administrations failure in Iraq.
If you want to go after someone for botching something, try talking about the botched policies of the Bush administration:
Iraq
Afghanistan
Iran
Korea
War on Terror
And how about on the domestic front? Can you think of any?
Katrina
Social Security
Medicare
Largest Deficit ever
And that is only a taste of this administrations bungling. So what do you think is more important? The failed policies of this administration which are destroying the standing of our country and the quality of life for millions of its own citizens, or a botched joke by a former presidential candidate?
November 1st, 2006 at 10:35 amSeriously, name hijacking is stupid. If you don’t like me being here, just ask me to leave and I will.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:35 am#46, Dem Soldier,
These more obvious forgeries are no big deal, but worse are statements some have made in my name while parrotting my syntax and diction, making flagrantly racist / sexist remarks. Most realize when it is an imposter, but others do not.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:36 amGet the F out of here Ben, there.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:37 amAll we need now is for other Democrats to stand up to the obvious spinning of Sen. Kerry’s remarks and say “Either admit you’re spinning his remarks or admit that Sen. Allan called black people ‘monkeys’! Can’t have it two differnet ways! Either you’re taking Sen. Kerry’s remarks out of context, or Sen. Allen called black people ‘monkeys’!”
It’s just so sad to see right-whiners glom onto a pathetic excuse for an election spin such as taking Sen. Kerry’s remarks and spinning them into your own personal insult.
Why don’t you ask the members in the service what Sen. Kerry meant? I know you won’t because you’ve already decided the spin you want, and nothing is going to change your partisan minds.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:38 amSince I can’t defend any of the Right Wing antics in this election, I’ll fall back opn attacking John Kerry for some comments he made. That’s how pathetic I am, but you gotta roll with what you got.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:39 am#38 that is what happens here on TP. They get their asses handed to them and then engage in high school games.
ROTFL…..
LonerTexan, Kerry is STUPID. I guess you have not read any of the papers today. Your own party and even some liberal journalists are acknowledging that Kerry is a liability to the Democratic Party> He’s cancelled at least a half a dozen appearances. That’s called hiding dumbass.
ROTFL….keep em coming….you guys are so stupid you keep defending the loser.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:39 amI raise the off-topic John Kerry issue because I’m here to distract you, not to add any relevant commentary to the threads. I’m generally a useless piece of crap.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:42 amDembass Soldier, why don’t you contact Harold Ford and ask him to stop asking Kerry to apologize?
ROTFL….see how stupid that is and how stupid you are? dumbass.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:42 amYeah…Jason and I have to jump on the Kerry statement because our masters at Right Wing HQ faxed us todays talking points. Tomorrow we will be fellating Karl Rove.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:44 am#59, Technodaoist,

November 1st, 2006 at 10:45 amokay, now I get it. When “you” made sexist remarks, and made fun of one posters child, it wasn’t you, it was an imposter.
Okay, now I truly get it.
Stanford “Ivy” league school: imposter
Vulcanization: imposter
MySpace site: imposter
39 year old Virgin: imposter
Geez, then maybe I shouldn’t call you out each and every time, eh?

November 1st, 2006 at 10:45 amPersonally, I prefer the troll imposters.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:46 amStop hijacking Ben and Jason Hendler’s screennames.
You do nothing but prove your inability to debate them and therefore give them the sense they are on a “moral high ground”.
Which is laughable.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:46 amI thought George Bush was the one who couldn’t admit a mistake. Bush is guilty of mismanagement of some important issues, but Kerry can’t even handle a simple apology. Reasonable progs will agree; Kerry thinks he is a genius, but is actually an incredible idiot. As bad as things are, if Kerry would have been elected, we would be much worse off.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:46 amKarl Rove always sends a team of trolls onto any TP thread that threatens Bush Regime > lol > pathetic!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:48 amJason, I wouldn’t worry about someone misinterpreting the statements of the ‘alleged’ hijacker as your own. They are far too truthful to have come from you.
And Ben, if that’s all it takes here you go - please leave.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:49 amOn one hand the reichwing says the Dems don’t speak with a unified voice, then one guy says something, it is purposely misinterpreted for pure political reasons and then attributed to a unified Democratic voice. Kerry isn’t running stupid jackass’, talk about dumb. And this is a Progressive site not a Democratic site. Sheeesh,The Right is as dumb as a nut filled turd.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:49 amJuan+C makes an excellent point.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:50 amThese right wing trolls (there aren’t many, but they make lots of noise) are so wrapped in image/PR they can no longer tell what’s true and what’s not - or they pretend not to.
Wake up. Actions matter, not words. Bush, not Kerry has been “the decider” for 6 years.
Back on topic, this obvious use of propaganda against its own people should arguably see some people in the government on trial for treason.
So stop jumping on any tiny PR issue (which btw, looks absolutely absurd in the face of all the errors on the other side, and makes you look like a total fool with no sense of perspective) and instead try discussing/excusing what’s on topic, trolls i dare you.
Kerry has issued a statement, and then quit speaking. It’s called depriving the story of oxygen. All that’s necessary is another republican shoe to drop to bump this one into oblivion. But I think most service personnel will look at the whole context before making up their minds, and when they do, they’ll see the truth - and how desperate republicans will gin up anything for the team.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:51 amBen & Hendler,
I’ve read the rest of your posts. Thanks for proving my point, though I’m not surprised that you both have nothing to say on Iraq.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:51 amThis is all the Right has while our Constitution and Iraq burn? ahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah, pathetic.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:54 amGene, I agree. They’re desperate for another Ward Churchill at this late date - even if they have to phony one up. Anything to stay in power.

November 1st, 2006 at 10:54 am#66, Paul,
EXACTLY, John Kerry is going to drag this issue out by not apologizing.
As bad as the Foley incident was, the Reps dumped Foley, denounced his behaviour and are reviewing how to improve processes to deal with such behaviour in the future.
Dems don’t learn from this or Clinton’s Lewinski incident.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:54 amIraq is a lost cause. Now, can we get back to bashing John Kerry?
November 1st, 2006 at 10:55 amWhen asked what the “Chaos” mark on their chart represents, Secretary Rumsfeld said it “is where the Iraqis get so crazy they allow stem cell research.”

November 1st, 2006 at 10:57 amGWB has been the butt of the “I am with stupid” jokes for years and even the right wingers know they are smarter than Bush and cant explain away his obvious issues.
Everyone knows WHO got us stuck in Iraq. And for the Republicans to try to imply (via Kerrys remarks) that the soldiers got us stuck in Iraq is a verbal crime against those soldiers. Bush and the people that voted for him got us stuck in Iraq not the soldiers. Kerry didnt say the soldiers got us stuck in Iraq. No one except the Republicans have said that.
Why do the Republicans think the soldiers got us stuck in Iraq? Why would they assume that when Kerry said “get stuck in Iraq” that he was talking about the soldiers? Why would they assume that? Is it because the Republicans blame the soldiers for us being stuck there? Kerry doesnt…

November 1st, 2006 at 10:57 amOooookay, now I am #59 again and a huge number of posts just appeared… I’d be more patient if this were a bit more consistent…
Ah well, nothing is perfect.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:58 amAs an indicator of overall disaster, this pathetic attempt at spin by the Pentagon would indicate that perhaps Bush should apologize to America and the world for the “botched joke” that is his administration. Seems appropriate.

All you need to do is look how much Sen. Kerry’s remarks have them frothing at the mouth! It’s the only floater that they can grasp at as they spin before sinking!
Oh, dear Lord, let Speaker Pelosi save us from the excesses of Republican mismanagement!
November 1st, 2006 at 11:00 amFor the record and the discussion, here are Kerry’s written remarks and what he actually verbalized. Both are clearly a dig against Bush, not the Armed Forces.

Look at the next thread.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:03 amBack to the subject of the blog, the new Pentagon media control rag. Since this is to be fair and accurate reporting tell us about the infrastructure you can’t protect. The electric, water, and sewer services are worse now than when we went in, 3/01. Hell, you couldn’t even secure your own ammo depot which blew up in early October, or how about the 14,000 arms that are now missing?
So let’s see some fair and balanced reporting. Bottom line, you’re doing a helva job.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:03 amSo the reich want’s to keep up with the Kerry line’s and their spin….Well not me….How about close to 700,000 lives that have been lost to get power and control by bull shit bush, here and over there…..Get you’re feeble mind’s around that one……(700,000) lives…..The evil war mongers and profateers like rummy/rice/cheney/rove and their fool pupett have wiped out entire generation’s of people….This bunch have created hatred from around the world and helped train terrorests with their debacle……..They have dismantled our own country and constitution, created huge debt and are in the process of selling off and out our country..Guess all you reich wingers don’t care they have baught huge land holding’s in foreign countries so after they attempt to put us in camp’s they can flee and live like royalty where we cant extradite their sorry ass and put them in prison…….Well, just remember the 700,000 that by intent or neglect bush has caused to die…..Blessings
November 1st, 2006 at 11:12 amlol go Sharon.. that’s what i don’t understand, these people, predominantly of the right, seem to think this is some kind of game or like cheer leading a football game. it’s not. this is serious stuff, get it wrong (and they have got it oh so wrong) and many many people die/get maimed/forever hate a country. this is why the Bush-enablers must be voted out on principle in this election, and this is what’s likely to happen.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:23 amAnd scum like Hendler and Ben come back yet another day to defend a wholly corrupt, amoral bunch of war criminals who aid and abet the oil companies and other assorted war profiteers in plundering the national treasury. Great judgment, guys. Way to go.
Take a step back from the koolaid before you find yourselves standing alone in support of Bush and his band of fascist thugs. By the time Bush leaves office he will be crawling under a rock somewhere in Texas to hide. It won’t be long after Bush leaves his presidential bubble that he realizes he is one of the most hated people alive. Especially by the military.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:42 amThe same goes for you, Mighty Asinine.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:44 amDear RS - I am glad your entire home and existence is Green Fueled. I wouldn’t want YOU aiding and abetting the evil empire of “Big Oil”. (You didn’t refute my point that Kerry’s grades weren’t quite as good as Bush’s…..)
November 1st, 2006 at 11:54 amAs Bush’s college grades were better than Kerry’s, I KNOW he could not have been insuinuating Bush is an idiot - - that would make Kerry an imbecile….

Wrong assumption, idiot. I have a carbon footprint far smaller than that of most Americans. I mostly ride my bike or walk places. My wife and I share one car that gets 30 mpg. We drive it less than 10,000 miles per year, approximately 1/3 of what would be normal for an employed couple our age. We have gone to great lengths to weatherize our house and to install energy efficient appliances. We use all compact fluorescent bulbs, we have a tankless water heater, we use programmable setback thermostats on our zone heating system, and we only air condition if the temperature exceeds 80 in the house. If every American lived like we live, energy use would be cut by 30% or more overnight.

you know perfectly well that going over there and getting killed wouldn’t help. what every American can do is vote for a new government. The issue is not simply 655,000 dead. the issue is: 655,000 dead FOR WHAT? causing that many innocent people of another country to die in a way that benefits your country long term might arguably be logically supportable (I still have a moral problem with it) but I suggest you drop the Iraq subject because however you spin this, you’re losing support.
And why you keep bringing up who got what grades in school i don’t know - it’s juvenile and completely irrelevant. Kerry could hardly have managed the country worse, could he? A potato could hardly have made a worse president. Vegetables don’t undermine the constitution. Both Bush and Kerry fumble speeches in their own ways but it’s academic, excuse the pun, because Bush is the one who has screwed up in every way that matters.
I give you a D- for trolling - go back to your troll classes and learn some new talking points, the current ones aren’t working.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:02 pmWOW - what a lame-ass way to try to cover up for being total losers. Has a bigger group of losers ever led this country??
(that’s a rhetorical, everyone knows the answer is “no”)
btw, MA is a lawyer, just like Star Jones, so don’t disagree with her.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:12 pmhow can ben and jason stand up for chickenhawks against real veterans - best watch it lil fellers, there are some real vets that come around here, and all will laugh at you when they make you look like the little phony cowards you really are. or i could do it, but i’m not a vet. bottom line, you guys are annoying pussies.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:16 pmPentagon Publicly Touts ‘Progress’ In Iraq, Secretly Acknowledges ‘Violence at An All-Time High’…
Americans deserve to be told the truth about what’s going on in Iraq….
November 1st, 2006 at 12:20 pmMA….Building up more reich winged word’s to submit for you’re November pay check from the reich wing party>? Well no matter, I will respond, just this once before I go out and get supplies to package up for our troop’s, they are begging for food now in Iraq…Did you notice that a couple of day’s ago on another thread.? Didn’t think so.
Responding to you’re query that I supply you with the date and time’s of civilians and casualaties of a war……It seems to me this was never declared a war except by bush and Iraq was not suposto be the issue. First it was Osama been forgotten. Going after the 9/11 bombers..Oh and by the way as you know Iraq had nothing to do with that. We would of been better served if the Saudis responsible would of been brought to justice…Then Iraq and WMD, change talking point’s, democracy, oil, no bid contracts…..As alway’s you and the reich want to twist word’s in the wind instead of keeping to the issues..The number of killed because of this administration is stagering and you want to attack a messenger?…..Yes I am a bleeding heart libral and I work hard to get truthful information out in my communety and I work for the people in my area as well….I don’t come here to drop little bomb’s, but to learn and pass on information I have learned…….Attack all you want MA…Here’s my answer to you as people are dieing all over the world in bush’s name and for his folly..(_x_)…That’s..kiss my ass to you and you’re heartless ilk….I send lot’s of Blessing’s as well, you need them more than all others.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:23 pmImagine that folks, you can have progress and violence at the same time. Who would have thought? It’s almost as if multiple things can be happening at the same time!
Well, except for in Think Progress world.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:31 pmNorMan, you appear to have some very sick ideas of what “progress” is. do tell us about all the wonderful progress happening in Iraq (apart from the increasing violence)? Do tell us how the outcome is going to be good, and why not send those ideas to the government aswell, because they don’t seem to know.
In NorMan’s world, mass violence is progress, or at least not a significant hindrance, apparently.
And multiple things like IEDs, assassination, rape and torture can indeed all happen at once in Iraq, yay!
(that’s 3 different replies, is that enough? counter trolling is fun but that’s enough for now).

Except that in childbirth typically nobody dies
November 1st, 2006 at 1:01 pmCould this be more doublespeakdoublespeak?
November 1st, 2006 at 1:18 pmHey, TerrytheTurtle. How’s it going? Some things are more important than dying. For example, many here belief that the current administration is curtailing many of our liberties, instituting torture, manipulating the press, trying to control elections, etc. I believe if you ask the typical TP poster, they would die to protect what they believe is being stolen from this country by the Bush administration if they couldn’t do it through the electoral process. My contention is those were the conditions in Iraq under Saddam Hussein, (no freedom of speech, torture, limited rights for women, no elections, etc). Are liberty and freedom rights reserved for us? Can we protect liberty and freedom for the Iraqi’s without bloodshed, or is it not worth it because they are Iraqi’s?
November 1st, 2006 at 1:20 pmOur men and women are fighting bravely, in spite of their failed leadership that has no plan for how to achieve or even define victory, and I am calling Hendler stupid.
November 1st, 2006 at 1:20 pmAnd what color, exactly does FUBAR come out as?

Comment by paul —
It seems rather simplistic, as we were also culpable for helping keep Saddam in power. If you were an Iraqi listening to American propaganda, would you believe a government who’d done all we have done to Iraq when they say they are there to bring Iraqis democracy?
November 1st, 2006 at 2:39 pmThe repugs have pounced on the Kerry flap because it has taken the focus off the increasingly horrible news coming out of Iraq.
November 1st, 2006 at 2:43 pmMuch as they would like to squelch the news and claim everything is going very well, these nasty little memos and notes and reports that come out of Iraq belie everything they’d like the public to believe.
The current word war between the White House and Kerry should be turned back on the repugs — they are the ones who got us into the hopeless mess in Iraq, now estimated to take DECADES to resolve, if ever.
Thanks, GW, you have spent a lifetime screwing up everything you touch, and now that includes the USA.
Paul limited rights for women is not accurate. Being a secular dictator, Saddam’s regime was much more open for women than any of it’s neighbors.
Can we protect liberty and freedom for the Iraqi’s without bloodshed, or is it not worth it because they are Iraqi’s?
This assumes that the violence is simply all in opposition to ‘liberty and freedom’. I don’t think that’s the case, you have a good old-fashioned power struggle between sects mixed in with a violent resistance to foreign occupation.
I thought Rice’s out-of-context comment was illustrative of the callousness that she and the administration share when considering the lives of ordinary Iraqis.
November 1st, 2006 at 2:55 pmMarie - well put.
November 1st, 2006 at 3:05 pmDoes anyone else remember Bush touting the fact that he is the only MBA president, and intended to run the gummint like a business?
We should have seen the red flags waving at that time, as every business he ever ran went straight to shit.
#114. TerrytheTurtle. You’re right about the women’s rights in prewar Iraq.
You seem pretty intelligent. I am sincerely curious. If you were an Iraqi, would you want the U.S. pull out?
November 1st, 2006 at 3:33 pmRUCerious, :)
November 1st, 2006 at 3:50 pmSome of us did see that Bush was a false candidate, but we were outshouted and ignored by the media and the public at large who believed the public relations job done on the candidacy of GWB.
It is, at least, a comfort to come here and commiserate with others of like mind after years of being subjected to the Hollywood-style coverage of the phony GWB.
#116 - what I think is not that important, Paul, but the polls of the Iraqis indicate that, yes, they do want the US out and they would prefer local Iraqi soldiers exclusively. Then these are the same Iraqis who say that attacks on US soldiers are justfied.

November 1st, 2006 at 10:38 pm“W” says he’s not going to replace Rumsfeld. That could be even more of a pre-election blunder than Kerry’s misstatement. This is a sign that Bush intends on “staying the course”, regardless. The least George can do is provide some fresh faces and saner ideas about how to manage the war. Just my 2¢.

November 1st, 2006 at 10:55 pm(newbie) Please excuse the double-post.
November 1st, 2006 at 10:57 pmIt just occurred to me that this article does not say which Iraqis are taking over control? The small military forces we have been able to train or the insurgents? I think I read an article not too long ago that said the insurgents were in control of certain parts of the rural areas and that ammo site that went up seems to show that no one has real control of Baghdad either.
November 2nd, 2006 at 12:47 am# 3, #6. Hey BEN(dover) and Jason. Your so hepped up on this Kerry thing.. what are you feelings about the joke bush made about not finding the Weapons of Mass Destructions that so many of our soldiers died searching in vain for? Or are you too busy copulating with your inbred relatives to notice the irony of your selective outrage?

Here is an example of Kerry’s history of insulting the military. He did not aim his remark at W.
—————————————
During a Vietnam-era run for Congress three decades ago, John Kerry said he opposed a volunteer Army because it would be dominated by the underprivileged, be less accountable and be more prone to “the perpetuation of war crimes.”
Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran who turned against the war, made the observations in answers to a 1972 candidate questionnaire from a Massachusetts peace group.
After Kerry caused a firestorm this week with what he termed a botched campaign joke that Republicans said insulted current soldiers, The Associated Press was alerted to the historical comments by a former law enforcement official who monitored 1970s anti-war activities…
…In 1972, as he ran for the House, he was less apologetic in his comments about the merits of a volunteer army. He declared in the questionnaire that he opposed the draft but considered a volunteer army “a greater anathema.”
“I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown,” Kerry wrote. “We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply ‘doing its job.’
“Equally as important, a volunteer army with our present constitutional crisis takes accountability away from the president and put the people further from control over military activities,” he wrote.
…Kerry filled out the candidate questionnaire at the request of Massachusetts Political Action for Peace, an anti-war group that decades later turned over its historical documents to university researchers.
