The Pentagon is considering filing criminal charges in response to a report in yesterday’s New York Times that revealed the U.S. military believes Iraq is sliding closer to “chaos.” Glenn Greenwald has the details.
They should waterboard every person who works for Fox news until they find out who leaked the info to the Times.
Then we should have a ticker tape parade for any member of the Times who was responsible for doing the job the Fourth Estate was intended by our Founding Fathers to do, namely, keeping an eye on the tyrants…
If there is any doubt we have slid into an Orwellian quagmire, where war is peace, etc., this move by the government sweeps it away handily. Prosecuting media who tell the truth? We need MORE of it, not more Faux News! No more smoke and mirrors! No more diverting attention from the debacle in Iraq! Vote Tuesday to provide some oversight of this six-year authoritarian nightmare.
If there is any doubt we are in an Orwellian nightmare, this move by the government sweeps it all away handily. Prosecuting media for telling the truth? Sound more like the USSR to me!! Can we all please vote Tuesday to provide some oversight of this incompetent, lying, smoke-and-mirrors administration?
Ahhh……so this is what the new “24 hour news cycle correction bull pen team” at the Pentagon is doing. I’d say that goes beyond news clarification………wouldn’t you?
This has to be stopped or our present way of life will be over.
The Pentagon is considering filing criminal charges in response to a report in yesterday’s New York Times – -
Bill Keller ought to shout it loud and clear, “Bring it on!”
Translation: The Bush Administration has engaged in a number of illegal activities which are indicative of “high crimes and misdemeanors” severe enough to warrant impeachment and initiation of war crimes charges. Therefore, the Bush Administration must launch a pre-emptive strike against anyone or any organization that points the public toward this truth, threatening their regime.
Oops, looks like I might have just made a reservation for one of those dissident cells.

So, Ray, can you fire up your feeble mind and explain to us why this information should be withheld from the American people? And don’t bother with the usual crap about it “emboldening” the enemy. The insurgents were already emboldened a long time ago by the outrageous incompetence of Bush and Rumsfeld and their abject failure to gain control of the country after topping its government. I’m sure they were further emboldened by Bush’s statement of unwavering support for Rumseld yesterday. The insurgency understands that Rumsfeld is a fool who couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag.
I just had a revelation – it has come down to nothing but WAR OF THE WORDS – fighting over semantics. I am so tired of it all. Absolutely nothing these pukes do anymore surprises me. It all comes down to this election and we all know it. What direction will our government take? Reverse course, or go over the cliff???????
Since the truth will set you free, there is no reason the rethugs should be let off the hook, since they distance themselves from the truth at every possible chance. For the Pentagon to even consider criminal charges shows just how frighteningly close we are to a facist society.
“Loose lips sink ships” was a slogan used by the allies in WW2. Please consider:
- It referred to unguarded talk by people who were aware of military operations – it was not intended to squelch debate, which continued through the war.
- The “ships” in your metaphor are already sunk.
- Iraq declared war on the Axis in WW2, and was our ally.
With a leader who lives in a world of “good news only” is it surprising that those who work for him will attempt to suppress what they believe to be “bad news?” Of course, not! This is a top down effort from Rove to kill off any news which does not fit the neocon view of the world. They hate open government and citizens who want accountablity.

I don’t expect much change even if the deomcrats take control of the house or senate. Dubya will still be commander in chief, with Cheney and Rumsfeld in tow for the next two miserable years.
Oh, I hope the Pentagon pulls this into court. They would get their asses handed to them.
Comment by dlet — November 2, 2006 @ 11:12 am
Which is why they won’t. They are puffing out their chests, but know that they have nothing backing them, short of declaring martial law (which I wouldn’t put past these criminals).
“In the First Amendment, the Government’s power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the government. Far from deserving condemnation for their courageous reporting, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other newspapers should be commended for serving the purpose that the Founding Fathers saw so clearly.” — Justice Black, New York Times v. U.S. concurrence (Pentagon Papers case).

The NY Timesmust have hidden the plans in the escape pod. Send a

There’ll be no one to stop us this time.
“Loose lips sink ships.” When Duhbya said “bring em on” that was loose and things have been sinking since to lower depths than he would like to admit. Admit??? This he will never do.
nice – now we have the pentagon practicing “psy-ops” against us and the press here at home. not to worry, though – if they’re as successful at it here as they’ve been abroad, we’ll be free from the rethugs even sooner than we thought.
- The government-funded nonpartisan agency U.S. Institute of Peace, who released “an unremittingly grim report†ruling out victory in Iraq.
- Sen. John McCain (R) for suggesting more troops for Iraq (obviously because things were going so badly there).
- The Pentagon official who told the NYT that “British military wants to withdraw troops from Iraq within a year.”
- Dick Cheney, for saying, “I would have expected that the political process we set in motion…would have resulted in a lower level of violence than we’re seeing today. It hasn’t happened yet. I can’t say that we’re over the hump in terms of violence, no.â€
- The inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, who found “overhead costs have consumed more than half the budget of some reconstruction projects in Iraq,†leaving “far less money than expected to provide the oil, water and electricity needed to improve the lives of Iraqis.”
- U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, who recently stated, “Success in Iraq is possible and can be achieved on a realistic timetable” and “Iraqi leaders have agreed to a timeline for making the hard decision needed to resolve these issues.
[Remember, Bush says that timelines and timetables embolden the enemy, who will just lay low and wait until we leave.]
- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R), who said, “We’re on the verge of chaos,
and the current plan is not working.”
- Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), who made the case that U.S. troops in Iraq are “being sucked slowly into a civil war with disastrous consequences.â€
- Sen. Arlen Specter (R), who agrees with Sen. Reed.
- Wayne White, who was the head of the State Department’s Iraq intelligence section until last year, who told the BBC: “The effort can’t be sustained over the long haul, and so we can’t stay a course, I think, that requires years and years more.†He added, “We’re not winning. It’s apparent.â€
- Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE), who said the upcoming elections in November may determine whether the U.S. changes course in Iraq. If control over the Senate changes hands, “you’re going to see twelve to fourteen†conservatives “freed up to go out and join in a bipartisan way to tell the President we are seriously off course.â€
- Sen. John Warner (R), who has said Iraq is “drifting sideways†and several parts of Iraq have taken “steps backwards†and “In two or three months, if this thing hasn’t come to fruition and if this level of violence is not under control and this government able to function, I think it’s a responsibility of our government internally to determine: Is there a change of course that we should take?â€
OK folks. All of these comments by all of the people or groups listed could embolden the enemy in one way or another. The Pentagon may be quite busy in the months to come.
So, all you supporters of Bush and the Iraq war, are you going to report them to the Pentagon, or should I?

While we are at it comrades we must purge Centcom for producing such a treasonous report. Those of you with the appropriate clearances may speak with Senator DeWine regarding the super secret plan.
(WARNING: Comrades please note that Senator DeWine can share the specifics of the five year plan with those party members who have clearance and submit to termination upon gaining knowledge of said plan.)
Yes, let’s have them all waterboarded for leaking the truth of the report.
We, the public, can’t handle the truth.
The government of GWB is already crumpling the Constitution, and when they imprison the free press (the last check on unbridled power in America), they may as well wipe their asses with it.
We send our troops to die for democracy in Iraq (or at least that’s the lie we are supposed to believe) but democracy at home is being chiseled away.
We all know now that our troops are in Iraq because of the oil they have.
GW said so.
That’s why we didn’t leave as soon as Saddam was toppled. In fact that is precisely why he was toppled – because GW wanted the oil himself.
Isn’t it even more clear than ever?
Anyone who would suggest that the government must go after the press for printing the truth should be the one jailed for giving aid and comfort to the enemy as this is precisely what the terrorists want; for us to keep chipping away at the Constitution. For that matter anyone who would order torture should be considered a threat to America and should have their citizenship revoked.
