“The church’s Acting Senior Pastor, Ross Parsley, tells KKTV 11 News that Pastor [Ted] Haggard has admitted to some of the indiscretions claimed by [former prostitute] Mike Jones, but not all of them.”

All he has really succeeded in doing is proving once more that the evangelical Christian movement in this country lends itself very well to blatant hypocrisy. Granted, religious people are capable of doing things while still feeling guilty about them — but the fact remains that this is a man, a pastor, whose supposedly strong faith in God apparently wasn’t enough to prevent him from at least dabbling in behavior which he publicly condemns as sinful. Evangelicals would like to believe that they’re virtuous and so much better than other people, but this pride is undeserved.

At first glance, it looked like a convenient way to discredit someone, five days before an election, without enough time for the accused to respond. Today, Haggard has resigned, which looks like to me, an admission of guilt. Whether he is guilty of the solicitation or just the drug use, it is hypocrisy. This is a good story for liberals and also a good story for Republicans. The intolerance for gays and the hypocrisy of the ‘holier than thou attitude’ from many in the Republican party is a weakness for Republicans, that hopefully we can learn from.
P.S. I’m sorry to ThinkProgress for implicating that this was a thin slanderous story. It is an appropriate story unfortunately time for Republicans. But, if you live by the sword, you die by the sword.
