It is too difficult, for someone (like me) who is almost always right, to admit he was wrong. (That’s a joke, my liberal friends) Anyways, the resignation looks like an admission of guilt. This story, the Foley story and others, are an indication that the Republican party has a long way to go in terms of tolerance for homosexuals and hypocrisy in general. I know many Christians imbrace the idea that homosexuality is wrong, but I believe Jesus preached love for your neighbors (not just your straight ones) and tolerance. He is also characterized as not being very fond of hypocrites. Maybe those are the most important lessons we can learn from Ted’s trips to Denver.

Haggard was on the outs with the really right wing evangelicals because he was advocating a greater focus on doing something about global warming and other environmental issues and also focusing on poverty and social justive issues. The other big wig evangelicals didn’t like that and wanted him out of the leadership. I think they got what they wanted (by the way, there’s another buried story that his accuser has failed a lie detector test). I think I smell a right wing rat here.

Haggard will have my forgiveness, certainly, and IMO God’s, ONLY after he acknowledges his sins, which to me are his hypocrisy and his betrayal of his family, not any homosexual behavior, per se. “We” do not have to pray for forgiveness on his behalf - that’s his job, as is atonement.
Of course, you have some forgiveness to seek as well, right here in the land of blog.

Does Haggard know Hebrew and has he really studied the Bible? If he did, and if he paid any attention to Biblical scholarship he’d know that Leviticus (Vayikra) uses an “unattested idom”–which means that the phrasing appears nowhere else in the Torah (Old Testament to some) and therefore there is no way anyone can say with absolute certainty what the phrase means. Sorry, but that’s a fact, inconvenient as it may be.
He would also know that when it’s called “toevah” (translated sometimes as abomination), that the same word is also used to describe things like married your ex-, cheating in business, the silver and gold of idols, women wearing men’s clothing, eating shellfish. In other words, a whole range of behaviors that are more accurately classed as “foreign”–which is what the writers of Leviticus were focused on to build group identity after the Babylonian Exile.
He’d also have to admit that Torah doesn’t privilege same-sex behavior for opprobrium because, guess what, it didn’t make it into the TOP TEN NO-NO LIST, aka the Ten Commandments.
I could go on and on but my points are 1) these so-called preachers are ignorant and 2) they quote selectively and 3) we should never let them act as if these cultural texts belond to them–we need to fight them on their own ground, embarrass and humiliate them for their ignorance!

Look, to all of you who have been spouting out mess on all of these blogs, and I mean all of you. Me included. There is not one person speaking on this chat perfect or without sin. I have read the bible completely through, and the one thing I have learned is to GOD there is no lesser or greater sin. To him sin is sin whether you lie , kill, steal, hate, fornicate, homesexual behavior, put idols or other gods before him, or anything that displeases him. He says he hates all of it and it stinks in his nostrils. There is nobody better then anyone on this earth. Regaurdless of what pastor ted haggert did, the bible is still true and GOD is still GOD and all of us will have to answer for what we do. I read that he hates liars, and they have their place in the lake of fire. So what you guys and girls talking about. GOD says forgive or you won’t be forgiven by him so you all need to be looking at your own lives and trying to get that straight instead of commenting on another person because in the end when hes judding it’ll be him and you. Nobody else, and their will not be any excuses. I’m a christian, and I don’t like what happened at all, but I read you have to many times a day if needed. It will make you a better person, and let you know who you really are. I speak on experience as well as what is written. I been done wrong a lot by others, but I choose to forgive. And leave the guy who is a virgin alone because anytime he can become like you, but never again can you become like him. Based on a literal reading of the Bible and a little bit of logic, it leads us to the unfortunate situation in which the Rev Haggard will suffer eternal torments for his lie about not knowing the homosexual escort, which he later admitted was indeed a lie. Rev Haggard is a liar, hence, according to a literal reading, he is now condemned. Of course, this would lead to a logical quandry, since how can a Christian be sent to Hell, that would lead to a contradiction of various other Bible passages! Oh Noes!. I would suggest that it is healthier and more sustainable to consider the books of the Bible as simply presenting the author’s own theological opinions, some of which are a little bit silly. If you continue to read and study the Bible, as I do, then I think you’ll find it a much more enlightening experience.

This book will offer you a new, refreshing perspective on Homosexuality, Christianity and just exactly what the Bible says and does NOT say about Homosexuality. I highly recommend everyone read and study this book.
The bibliography is tremendous. These authors have done their homework on this subject and they bring to light many things I had never seen or heard taught or preached before. I found it refreshing and very enlightening.
You may be surprised to find that Jesus never mentions anything remotely related that could be interpreted as condemnation of this subject. And where he does possibly discuss what we today call Homosexual or meets a Homosexual, his responses might surprise you.

Although it’s nice to believe the Bible is tolerant of homosexuality, I find it difficult to maintain that belief when I read, say, the Pauline epistles. I *disagree* with Paul when he states all homosexuals will be condemnded to Hell. Anyone being condemned to Hell is inconceivable, and, personally, I cannot worship a God who would commit such a heinous immoral act. Obviously, I think the Bible gets it wrong in places :-).
The basic tenets of what Jesus taught can be followed regardless of one’s sexuality. I would argue that following Jesus’ pragmatic teachings outlined in the Synoptic Gospels is closer to Jesus’ original intent that what the current day fundamentalistic Christians emphasize.
Homosexuality is not a disease. It does not need curing. Fundamentalistic Christianity on the other hand…

In fact, many pastors, evangelists, missionaries and lay persons are homosexual. The real sin is that they feel pressured to conform to an orientation completely foreign to their genetic makeup. Therefore, you create situations where, as in Haggard’s case, they have to lie and hide their very being. I follow the teachings of Christ and that is the true definition of a christian. Not some man made philosophy to keep the masses in check. Shame on you for not excepting the true nature of Christ.

I understand that homosexuality may be a very seductive and an extremely difficult bondage to break, but it does not define your identity as a person. I believe certain “genetic” (generational) and environmental factors make it harder for some than others, but everyone has their demons to battle. Homosexuality seems like it is more insidious than most though for the very reason that it tries to convince you that you just ARE that way and not only shouldn’t you try to fight it but there is nothing to fight. Just go with it. Well, since our behavior needs to conform to God’s standards and not vice-versa, it is delusional to think that you are living for God but not allowing Him to free you from homosexuality. Of course that freedom cannot be obtained apart from a real relationship with Jesus.
