Today on NBC’s Meet the Press, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) — echoing Condoleeza Rice’s justification for the war — said that Saddam Hussein was “a madman who had in his focus the preparation of nuclear weapons.” Watch it:
Contrary to Dole’s claim, Saddam was not focusing on “the preparation of nuclear weapons” at the time of the U.S. invasion in March 2003 and hadn’t been for more than a dozen years. He also had no capability to restart the program. From the Duelfer report:
Saddam Husayn ended the nuclear program in 1991 following the Gulf war. ISG found no evidence to suggest concerted efforts to restart the program. … Although Saddam clearly assigned a high value to the nuclear progress and talent that had been developed up to the 1991 war, the program ended and the intellectual capital decayed in the succeeding years.
Transcript:
RUSSERT: Do you think this will have an effect on the election, Sen. Dole?
DOLE: I think this shows the Iraqis are putting their past behind them, the establishment of the rule of law. I feel this will mean they are moving forward. Certainly a madman who had in his focus the preparation of nuclear weapons. This will, I think, be received as the right thing and I don’t expect that it’s going to have that much effect one way or the other.
She’s been in Pickle’s pillbox. She was a ranting fool talking over everyone and totally disregarded Timmeh’s repeated requests to stop talking.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:38 amLiddy, dear, I have in my focus never having to work another day in my life, and having an ass you can bounce a quarter off until I’m in my 90s, but that ain’t happening either. Wake up!
November 5th, 2006 at 11:39 amLibby Dole is a has-been; she’s on the way out.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:42 amHer comments are strictly political talking points and incoherent.
Perhaps the number of face lifts she’s had have taken a toll.
She wouldn’t shut up, either.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:44 amHer comments mean absolutely nothing to me.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:45 amSo we’ve now downgraded again from “Saddam has WMD’s” to “Saddam has Weapons of Mass Destruction related program activities” to “Saddam had in his focus the Preparation of Nuclear Weapons”. Yay. I wonder what’s next.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:46 amLizzy….so does this mean we should attack every country that has nukes? Every country that has a dictator?….opps…we might attack ourselves.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:48 amWhen something as significant as the basic reasons for attacking another country (which involves the loss of thousands of American lives and billions of dollars) are still being debated years after the fact, it should be a clear signal to the decision makers that the citizens do not believe them. The repubs are attempting to fly this kite at night with no wind.
The basic problem with the neocon plan to control the middle east by occupying Iraq is that is does not connect in any meaningful manner with the lives of the majority of Americans. All the claims of honor and glory for the victorious Americans has not happen. No amount of fear mongering will change the reality of this failure. Yet, prezident bush wanted to the the “War President” so he has to terrorize Americans for the rest of his term in order to justify his failed decison.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:50 amThis party is the party of morality? This is the party of liars, and are not a part of my religous beliefs.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:50 amlibby dole is a complete motor mouth, who used her “Senatorial” status to filibuster Russert. But all she does is spew typical g.o.p. bushit talking points.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:08 pmTo Libby Dole: You are a loser just like your husband. Shut up and go home hasbeen.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:14 pmThis people continue to drink and dispense their poisons until the glass is dry .This current theatrical tragedy , alas but too real , is the greatest since the Greek tragedies .
November 5th, 2006 at 12:20 pmThats exactly why no one listens to this person, Dole, she ignores whatever question she’s asked and immediately jumps on the rhetorical springboard and starts regurgitating crap.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:28 pmI enjoyed Timothy’s show. His staff provided great background info.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:29 pmRon Emanuel does not take B.S. sitting down. He insisted on the truth.
Is there something in the Republican genes that causes them to strive diligently to deceive?
November 5th, 2006 at 12:32 pmI also noticed that the kids over on FoxSnooze Sunday were very, very subdued this morning. That is a sure sign of the impending Republican Congressional debacle on Tuesday. Little Britty Hume is conceding the race and that moron, Billy Kristol is laying the groundwork to blame anyone but himself for leading the imbecilic GDumbya down the garden path.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:34 pmI’ve been noticing recently whenever I see Liddy that she is looking more and more like Zoolander’s masseuse. Anyone else see that?
November 5th, 2006 at 12:42 pmThey are much like a rapist, They know what they are doing is wrong but they will do whatever it takes to make the victim out to be the offender.
DARVO GrOPer style.
November 5th, 2006 at 12:51 pmRude – ill mannered – irrelevant – old bat of no thought and only talking points. – Why in the hell do they this waste of everyone’s time on television? This can’t even be classified as entertaining. Just an old bat with a bag of hot air who won’t shut up!
November 5th, 2006 at 1:00 pmAnd she is important because…?
November 5th, 2006 at 1:05 pmDole tried to filibuster the debate and came off very negative. Her ‘Democrats are for failure in Iraq” got her blasted by all. She’s pushing kool-aide from the twilight zone.
November 5th, 2006 at 1:35 pmAnyone notice how the talking point has gone from, Saddam had WMD’s to Saddam had WMD related programs, to Saddam was trying to rebuild his WMD programs, to Saddam had his focus on WMd’s.
Keep pushing the fear I guess.
November 5th, 2006 at 1:35 pmLiddy need to be doing the thing she does best…hostess at the the Grand Ole Opry and not making darn fangled comments on things she know nothing about. Hee Haw…what an ass
November 5th, 2006 at 1:41 pmIsn’t she just adorable!
November 5th, 2006 at 2:00 pmHAG
November 5th, 2006 at 2:11 pmJeez, what happen to republicans I use to like, first John McCain and now Liddy. They’ve turned into moronic, shameless, shills
November 5th, 2006 at 2:46 pmshe looks like one of those bobbleheads.
November 5th, 2006 at 3:06 pmWhat a harpy! Russert should have quietly shut her mic off and let her sit there with her beak snapping open and shut. She came across as desperate and arrogant, which is a tradtional look for the Republicans, but it’s not a good look.
November 5th, 2006 at 3:29 pmThese Neocons are the biggest bunch of homo liars i have ever seen … they actually think if they keep telling the same lies over and over that the lies will become reality.
They wanted Saddams oil … end of story.
They have done nothing but lie since Bush took office … the intelligence shown by Powell as proof was an outright joke … a 12yr old could have done as good of a job using Photoshop.
They are the true terrorists … just Google & read “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” by Dick Cheney – This nutcase actually says we need to develop race specific bio-weapons – and the media says nothing.
Lets see any of us say “lets kill all the African Americans” and see what happens to you.
These guys are murdering thugs – Read up on the Rockefeller Institutes plan for population reduction on the planet earth (up to 90%) … these guys destroy the environment with their smoke belching factory’s just to get rich. Yet they feel that they should be the ones left alive – not you.
Eugenics, terrorism, and torture of children … the U.S. is starting to make the Nazi’s look like kids.
It’s later than you think … wake up!
November 5th, 2006 at 3:39 pm“Hocus, pocus, and magically I’ll change the focus…” Sorry, Liddy, but All Hallows’ Eve has come and gone… What’s just around the corner is the day of Doom for the GOP on 7 November 2006. So bake one of those old-fashioned Election Cakes, kids, the illegitimate lying Bush regime is going down for the count…
November 5th, 2006 at 4:04 pmCheers.
This nutcase actually says we need to develop race specific bio-weapons.
Colon Powell didn’t call them the crazy’s for no reason.
November 5th, 2006 at 4:10 pmIts simply amazing that a person with that much Botox in their face can tell tales with a straight face,, =)
November 5th, 2006 at 4:13 pmLibby Dole just made a big elephant out of herself by continuing to talk when everyone else was trying to get her to stop. She sounded so desperate in her attempt to talk over Rahm, to talk over Tim, to talk over Schumer — it just made me gag. Please don’t ask this woman to be on your show anymore, Tim Russert, because this is what she always does, only today it looked so manic.
November 5th, 2006 at 4:15 pmher plastic face is disturbing to look at!!! i dont even hear what she is saying!!!
November 5th, 2006 at 4:21 pmWe have turned their moral value cloaking field off and exposed the reality based echo machine hidden in their heads..OYE!
November 5th, 2006 at 4:26 pmWHY DON’T WE START ASKING SPECIFICS ABOUT THE MIDDLE EAST when these numbnuts are interviewed? I.E., Mrs. Dole, can you explain the difference between the Sunni and the Shiites?
It’s a fact most of these morons don’t know SQUAT about the type of conflict we’re engaged in….how can you FIGHT what you’re nto FAMILIAR with?
go**damn!!!!
November 5th, 2006 at 4:42 pmCobra II, the vetted Pentagon history of the illegal invasion of Iraq, says:
“The Iraqi leader’s top priority was protecting his government against potential coups and internal threats, such as a Shiite rebellion. Iran, an adversary with whom he had fought a bloody eight-year war, was next on the list of danger. Fighting a ground war with the Americans was a distant third. For all of the war talk and preparations in Washington, his real worries were closer to hand.” (pg. 55)
In fact, the non-existent nuclear program was SUCH a heavy issue that the index of that 600-page tome fails to list ‘nuclear,’ ‘atomic,’ ‘Uranium,’ nor the obvious, ‘Yellowcake.’
NO effort was made to locate nuclear material in Iraq because they knew there was none outside of Tuwaitha and eight other dumps, which they LEFT UNGUARDED for a full month.
The concern of chemical WMD was far more significant, given Hussein’s use of Sarin shells on the Marsh Arabs (hushed up by GHW Bush), after Schwartzkopf mysteriously allowed Hussein the use of his attack helicopters. Even then, the generals were widely reported as telling the troops arriving in Baghdad that they would not need their chem suits.
The Bushco Record:
• Spread nuclear materials to hostiles (Uranium yellowcake, Cesium and Strontium).
• Released hundreds of tons of HMX and RDX, dual-use explosives needed for nuclear weapons.
• Allowed looting of hundreds of precision machine tools, such as are needed to build bombs. Most of those precision lathes and the like are now probably in Iran.
• Released plans for nuclear bomb building.
• Failed to punish A. Q. Khan for giving North Korea, Libya, and Iran nuclear technology and equipment.
• Broke 8-year Clinton agreement with NK, allowing them to kick out the UN inspectors and chisel their Plutonium out of the concrete, detonate one weapon, and build 5-6 more.
• Hid Halliburton’s loss of nuclear materials during shipment.
It’s quite a record. You can see why Dole is pulling watermelons out of her ass rather than deal with reality.
November 5th, 2006 at 4:48 pm“she looks like one of those bobbleheads.”
With trowel-loads of makeup applied … liberally.
November 5th, 2006 at 4:51 pmDole is a mean lying GOP hag just like her husband the retired Senator!
November 5th, 2006 at 5:31 pmOf course she’s lying about it – imagine if she told the truth: ‘Well, we started this war so that our wealthy and powerful circle of friends could get even richer and more powerful. We’re not ashamed to make a little more money, you know. It’s not like any of our kids are going to be fighting in Iraq! We can’t come right out and say this, so we talk about national security, terrorism and ‘economic realities’ instead.”
November 5th, 2006 at 5:33 pmI don’t think that Liz Dole should be criticized for her failures. She is simply out of her league.
November 5th, 2006 at 5:45 pmPoor Mighty Aphrodite. So afraid, so afraid. And while I agree that comments about face lifts and makeup are snarky fluff, adding nothing to a discussion, do you truly consider your comment to be more intellectually substantial?
Yes, there are Muslims who hate us and would like to bring us down. But how realistically can they do this? Yes, they can do another 9/11, or a suitcase bomb, or various other scenarios, but are they actually capable of coming over here and taking us over? Come on!
You are in good company with Libby Dole, always tilting at strawmen.
Iraq is a clusterf**k with no good solutions, and whose fault is that? (Hint: we liberals are NOT to blame).
But as for dealing with Islam in general, we need to use diplomacy, and carrots and sticks, economic and otherwise. We need to understand the various forces over there much better than we do. Lack of understanding means stupid mistakes. We can do this by beefing up our Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies programs at our universities with incentives for people who major in these fields. We also need to recognize the very real grievances that many in the Arabic and Islamic world have.
There ARE Islamic extremists, and if necessary, they need to be taken out. But this is much better done by our various armed forces Special Forces, based upon unimpeachable intelligence about particular individuals and groups. NOT invading whole countries and killing thousands of innocents, whose surviving relatives will become new radicals to fight against us. And NOT willy-nilly rounding up hundreds of people, regardless of level of guilt, if any, and then throwing them in Gitmo with no recourse.
In short, the people in power have done absolutely everything they can to ensure the worst outcome possible. Killing thousands of innocents. And shame on you for continuing to defend them. Have you no morals or decency?
November 5th, 2006 at 8:09 pmElizabeth Dole, I surrender to your shoulder pad assault. Touche madam, well played.
November 5th, 2006 at 9:23 pmAs a North Carolinian I am embarassed to have this carpet bagger representing my state. I have yet to hear her speak truthfully or recognize it. Her hypocracy is unreal. To what her shriek during MTP has certainly removed any of her Southern genteel charm she likes to exude. Please, America, disregard her, and pray that in 2008 this state can elect someone other than her or another Jesse Helms.
November 5th, 2006 at 9:27 pmI just watched MTP courtesy of Mr. Tivo
Dole was terrible.
Kudos to Rahm, he looked annoyed but seemed like the reasonable one.
I seldom feel sorry for Russert but “Liddy” was on her high horse and the darn thing was rearing. Tim was having quite a time getting it corralled.
November 5th, 2006 at 10:38 pmLibby,….go home, put your teeth in a cup, drink a warm glass of milk and get some sleep cause your time is up and you’re a worthless hag. Oh, if you can get your dino hubby Bob to pop a little blue pill maybe you two can have a little senior shag, you sure sound like you need. After that last shag do us a favor and go to sleep and never wake up.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:40 pmWho in the hell voted for this braying gasbag? Liddy Dole is an embarrassment to herself and to her constituents. She gets to go on television and make an ass of herself only because the voters in her state gave her that right. Who cares what she looks like, it’s the drivel being shot out of her mouth at high velocity that is disgusting. Does she lie because she’s a Republican or is she a Republican because she’s a liar? Hmm, chicken or egg?
November 6th, 2006 at 5:46 amIt was painful to watch Dole yesterday: representing republicans, she was obnoxious, rude and wrong.
November 6th, 2006 at 9:29 amShe is a disgrace to her office.
November 6th, 2006 at 9:56 amthis older lady is a prominent vegetable in the food aisle at your local upscale market. vegetables only talk to your intestines as they are processed. There is rarely any reason to speak to them, and there is almost never any reason to respond when they speak. I take that back, you can, depending on your own sensibilities either apologize for the fart, or describe it’s merits. either way, it is but a momentary distraction
November 6th, 2006 at 10:33 amDon’t blame Libby. She isn’t getting any. Imagine going through the rest of your life knowing your spouse is not able.
November 6th, 2006 at 9:00 pmBy the way, nice try MA, you are such a lame troll. It is almost cute.
November 6th, 2006 at 9:00 pmMy sincere apologies to the thread for the “makeup” comment – it was ill-considered.
November 7th, 2006 at 9:57 amIs Tami Faye Baker a cousin of Elizabeth Dole?
