ThinkFast: November 6, 2006

FBI Criminal Division chief James Burrus says “the bureau is ramping up its ability to catch crooked politicians and might run an undercover sting on Congress.” He expects an emphasis on rooting out public corruption “for many, many, many years to come.”

House Speaker Hastert’s (R-IL) future “is in doubt even if the Republicans retain control of the House” because of unease over his handling of the Foley page scandal and “what a House ethics committee investigation might conclude about him,” the Washington Post reports.

A proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marraige in South Dakota is too close to call. Forty-seven percent say they are opposed to the amendment while 46 percent support it.

Federal prosecutors rejected 87 percent of the international terrorism cases brought by the FBI during the first nine months of fiscal year 2006. Prosecutions fell from 118 defendants in fiscal year 2002, to 19 defendants from Oct. 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006. The Justice Department disputed the findings.

“The U.S. government conducted a series of secret war games in 1999 that anticipated an invasion of Iraq would require 400,000 troops, and even then chaos might ensue.” Read the full study HERE.

Robert Novak writes conservative political operatives grumble that Bush’s presence on the campaign trail has been a drag. One operative told Novak what Bush’s strategy should have been: “The president should go on a 2 1/2 -week vacation, and when he gets back, go right into the hospital for minor surgery. In other words, he should have disappeared.”

Iraq is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, according to new rankings from Transparency International. “When you have high levels of violence,” the group’s chief executive said, “not only does security break down, but so do checks and balances, law enforcement and the functioning of institutions like the judiciary and legislature.”

A recent CIA assessment found that Afghan president Hamid Karzai has been “significantly weakened by rising popular frustration with his American-backed government.” Karzai continues “to struggle to exert authority beyond Kabul,” and is increasingly viewed as corrupt.

House Intelligence Chairman Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) criticized the Bush administration yesterday “for its handling of a trove of once-secret documents from Saddam Hussein’s covert nuclear program disclosed on a federal Web site.” “It looks like they screwed up,” he said.

And finally: Vice President Dick Cheney will shoot his friend pheasant on Election Day. “On his first hunting trip since he accidentally shot a companion last February while aiming at a covey of quail on a private Texas ranch,” Cheney “will head to South Dakota to spend several days at a private hunting lodge near Pierre.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

US stops audit of Iraq rebuilding

The Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction has embarrassed the US administration with its reports on corrupt practices.

The office, which also reported the 14,000 missing weapons, is being closed due to a clause in Warner’s 2007 Military Spending Authorization.

Halliburton, KNBR, CACI and others with no-bid contracts now have no oversight contracts as well.

    The faithful few:

16 percent said they would be sending a vote of support for Bush when they cast ballots Tuesday.

Doesn’t it sort of defeat the purpose to warn people you will be doing a sting on them?

  27. Briseadh na Faire says:

21 – it’s not about oversight nor regulation. It’s about going after judges one disagrees with.

There’s already oversight, both through ethics complaints and through the ballot box, as State judges hold non-partisan elected positions.

Remember, half the parties in a dispute go away from court disappointed. Under a law like what’s being proposed, a judge will face the possibility of a lawsuit or criminal investigation with every ruling s/he makes.

Do you want a judge who will rule according to the law, or according to mob justice?

Sorry, I shouldn’t have asked that. From your earlier posts, it is obvious you’d prefer a dictatorship.

one last post before work. I just received this email:

Karl Rove has been bragging for weeks about his “72-hour program” to swing the elections, which predict a Democratic takeover of Congress.

Now we know what it is: a dirty trick campaign using robocalls.

The calls are made to Democrats and swing voters at all times of day or night to make them angry. And they pretend to be from the Democrat (”Hello, I’m calling with information about Lois Murphy”). If you hang up, they call back 7-8 times, and each time you hear the Democrat’s name, to get you angry at him or her. If you stay on, you get to hear a scathing attack on the Democrat.

Karl Rove’s whole career has been devoted to dirty tricks. In 2002, his dirty trick was to force Congress to vote shortly before Election Day for the Iraq War based on two months of White House lies about WMD’s and Al Qaeda ties. That dirty trick has cost the lives of 2,834 brave young Americans (16 so far in November), $2 trillion in debt to our children and grandchildren, and unleashed massive bloodshed in Iraq.

It’s too late for legal action or even newspaper stories. If you receive one of these calls, write down the time and candidate and call every radio and TV show you can and urge everyone listening to vote against the disgusting Republican dirty tricksters. And forward this email to everyone you know so they aren’t fooled by Karl Rove’s dirty trick.

Let’s make this Karl Rove’s LAST campaign by voting ALL Republicans out of office.

HUH???! how can you say such a thing, gerald???
i’m not sure EITHER of you read the whole article… suggest you do so…
    these are severely disabled newborns…
and the whole story is about putting forth the discussion… The college made its comments in a submission to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, which is carrying out an inquiry into the viability of life.
Nuffield will publish its report on critical care decisions in foetal and neonatal medicine next week.

your, and squeegee’s, comments only point out an ignorance of the subject… it’s hard to even imagine being in the shoes of the parents who have to make such a decision… my family has it’s own littlest angel… fortunately, she was unable to “hang on” long enough even with extensive neonatal care and my brother didn’t have to decide…

I read the article last night. I also know all about eugenics. I also have seen all the pictures I need to see about abortion (late term and other wise.)

Logically I see why the people are saying that these severaly disabled babies and their parents have nothing to look forwards to but pain. If they had a medical cure they would suggest the cure instead of death. They are not being immoral. They are trying to find a way to save everyone from alot of pain. This is understandable. However it is not considering what the religious people rightfully defend as being “pro-life”. I am not against the religious right because they are “pro-life” someone needs to defend that stance. I am against the religious right because they try to use the LAW to force that onto everyone else…. even to the point of calling CELLS babies…

Once a child is born or even very close to it (I am against late term abortions) then LIFE should be allowed to take whatever path it is going to take .. even if the child is so disabled they will die in months. It is NOT purely logical. But no one ever said that everything in this world MUST be purely logical. It was LOGICAL for Jesus to submit to the Jewish religious leaders that wanted him to tell the people that Jesus had lied to them so that he could live. It was LOGICAL for Jesus to tell the Romans that he was refering to being the King of a kingdom that only exists in the heart of men… so that he could live. Jesus choose NOT to do the LOGICAL thing for something else… something that would only bring PAIN to him and his followers. But that something else eventually led to Roman giving up on the “games” that was basically slaughtering people for sport. It also eventually led to people saying “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL”.

Sometimes you do things that are RIGHT and you cant really say why… it is illogical but in the long run it is the right thing to do. Sort of like how when George Washington was offered to be the king of America he said I didnt defeat one king george to become another one. George Washington himself would not abuse that power… but in the long run there were other things to be considered. Some times you willing take on pain for an idea. Sometimes that IDEA is more important than the pain of a baby and its parents.

Just dont go to extremes. If a doctor can determine at the fetus stage that there are going to be severe problems then let the parents decide THEN to terminate. But if they wait too long then let LIFE … live. And nature will take its course.

  53. katy says:

Heh, naturally. The Dems are poised to take control of the House, they just might take the Senate as well, and NOW the FBI is interested in rooting out political corruption.

They’ll spend the next couple of years plastering the name of every Democrat who does anything wrong, no matter how slight the transgression. We’re talking about using a government-owned vehicle to drive a family member having a heart attack to the hospital when it would take an abulance 20 minutes longer to get to the scene. We’re talking about owing $7, 897.65 in taxes one year, and accidentally leaving off the 65 cents. We’re talking about scandalous pictures of Dem Reps with scnatlily clad “gal pals” on page one, with retractions that the “gal pal” was actually one of his nieces in a local production of “Sweet Charity” on page C27.

And in the next election cycle, all those sins will be amplified to Who-concert decibel levels by an increasingly shriekish NRCC desperate to prove just how corrupt those Dems really are, but they’ll forgive you if you’re now smart enough to vote Republican so they can clean house…you know, the way Republicans always clean house of nasty lawbreakers (on the other side).

Yeah, FBI, thanks for rooting out all that corruption NOW.

My point is, I think allowing doctors to NOT “do everything they can” to save a life is wrong. How do we begin the battle where someone terminates their unhealthy child and the very next day a cure is found (Using Stem cell research) that lets them live a normal life?

    3. When Hastert is caught red handed covering-up for Mark Foley, have him proudly blame everyone else around him a refuse to take responsibility.
    4. When Iraq is descending into chaos, have Bush guarantee that Rumsfeld will stay as Defense Secretary for the next two years.
    5. When Bush’s popularity is at an all time low, have him stump for GOP candidates.
    6. When popularity of the GOP is waning with the Religious Right, make sure the Bush administration calls them “nuts” and have a prominent religious figure involved with sex and drugs.
    7. When congress is perceived as corrupt, have more than a dozen GOP politicians immersed in scandals.
    8. When Bush seems out of touch with reality, give “important” speeches that are more happy talk about winning in Iraq.
    9. When Bush intends to use his political capital, waste it on privatizing Social Security, tout Immigration Reform and accomplish little, and for god sakes, squash any hint of any oversight over ethically challenged do-nothing Congress who sell votes to corporations.

Roadmap to GOP retaining control in medterm elections:

I realized we agreed that the killing of kids was bad, my post was originally going to be a “and to back up type thing”, which then switched and then just got posted.

    Poor wording on my part.

“The U.S. government conducted a series of secret war games in 1999 that anticipated an invasion of Iraq”

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa???? But…but…but, acording to ThinkProgress, the idea of invading Iraq was a totally “neo-con” / George W. Bush plan and that before Jan. 20, 2001 no one in the U.S. government ever conceived of the idea that invading Iraq may be necessary! Do you mean to tell me that even the Clinton administration recognized that Iraq was such a potential threat that it was necessary to plan for the possibility of invading Iraq?

  65. Jay Randal says:

Tomorrow hopefully will be the election that smashes the GOP control of the Congress! If the votes are all counted fairly, then Democrats should pick up 25 to 30 House seats and 5 to 6 Senate seats, so that means control of the House and borderline for the Senate > perhaps a moderate Repub can be coaxed to become a Democrat in the Senate. Lieberman is a traitor, so voters in CT must kick his ass all the way to Israel. On the other hand if Karl Rove institutes massive GOP fraud tomorrow, then Democrats would only pick-up 8 to 12 House seats and probably 3 Senate seats. If the GOP and Bush Regime steal the election again, then Americans must do a nationwide work strike to bring Bush to his knees. Do not let them steal the election > PERIOD.

It just goes to show you how powerful the almighty Bush is. He engineered military games as the govenor of Texas. The Emperor in Star Wars did alot before he was the BMOC, it’s sort of something like that.

Come on Jay, if the GOP keeps the house that dosn’t mean fraud, it just means that once again the polls had a slant towards the dem’s, just like most of the polls for roughly the last decade+.
Also, I call > a greater then sign, or an alligator bracket, depending on the context, not a period.

Dont you mean the NeoCon idea was the need for “a new pearl harbor”?

No one EVER said Saddam was a good guy. We also have plans for invading CHINA… that doesnt mean you just go do it like an idiot. Plans for every contingency is smart… but when you have your experts telling you “Al Qeada plans to attack on American soil soon” .. well then those plans for Iraq should remain plans until Iraq does something to make it more important than Al Qeada at that time…. its just basic commonsense really…

  71. Jay Randal says:

boo > do not fall for GOP crap about phony polls showing Repubs keeping the Congress! Do you want a fascist dictatorship in America? If not then vote for Democrats and fight to prevent vote fraud! ( I do use > as a period or as a bracket.)

no, i can’t… gotta try to repeat my comment…

Once a child is born or even very close to it (I am against late term abortions) then LIFE should be allowed to take whatever path it is going to take… And nature will take its course.
    Comment by ggibson — November 6, 2006 @ 11:09 am

    1. i think nobody is FOR “late term abortion”… sometimes it does become medically necessary.

    2. sounds like you don’t believe in NEO-NATAL treatment either…

my own son spent 2 weeks in NICU because during labor he was “in destress” and as he passed through the birth canal he aspirated meconium, and had to be treated for a possible lung infection… at 6 lbs he was the biggest and healtiest baby there… after spending most of my time there also, i came away with a very healthy respect and admiration for the nurses who care for these very sick babies – and another perspective as to how the parents deal with it…

you can NEVER know until you are in that situation…
and i would not wish it on anyone…

and now you know the rest of that story…
    .

  74. katy says:

huh… well, thanks for the verification, squeegeeboo…
    wonder how/why that happened?…
“birth canal”?… “meconium”? (that is some bad shite, btw)… “NICU”?

  75. bananarepublic says:

The FBI and the Justice Department have gone off the deep end ever since Mueller and Gonales took over. All they try and do is keep up the appearance of government oversight – do you think that Mueller’s FBI or Gonzale’s Justice will be looking into all the open-ended crooked contracts handed out to Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney’s cronies? They’re probably busy bugging every Democratic Senator & Representative under the guise of ‘investigating corruption’ and funneling the information to Karl Rove on the side. No need to break into office buildings anymore.

The FBI’s main job these days? Spying on dissidents, infiltrating anti-war groups, investigating journalists – typical secret police activity. The entire upper echelon of the FBI should be fired for their glaring failures to a) prevent 9/11 (they could have!) and b) investigate the anthrax attacks and c) investigate the gross corruption within the executive branch of the government.

  76. As says:

Having spent a hellish 15 days on Iwo almost 52 years ago, I am convinced that; A) if there is a God, he set the thing in motion and walked away, B) that in all armies (and all other branches), the grunts/dogfaces/leathernecks/swabbies/flyboys are and have always been cannon feed, regardless of the ‘pride in the service/corps etc.. It’s all crap.
    C) Americans are like the Germans of the 1933, they want a strong leader (ruler), they submit to extensive eavesdroping and spying, and welcome the government control of the media: propaganda. Anyone who votes for the present regime deserves exactly what they have gotten and will get in spades.

“they want a strong leader (ruler), they submit to extensive eavesdropping and spying, and welcome the government control of the media: propaganda.”

When you say they, I hope you are referring to the baby boomers and not the rest of us. If you look at the politic-dynamic you will find a vast majority of the baby boomers are behind this support for a war on terror.

The rest of us don’t want it, and quite frankly, don’t care what happens to Iraq because we have are own problems right here at home. This was Bush’s war not America’s war. Iraq did not attack us and the truth will never be told even though it is staring you right in the face.

We need Impeachments in order to set things right. Impeachments with no pardons available. War crimes, lies and attacks against the state in the form of abridging the constitution. This must not go unanswered.

  82. Bluedog49 says:

Cat, I’m really not sure where you got the idea that most “baby boomers” support the war. That’s not supported by poll data. Please remember that it was baby boomers who stood up to the industrial military complex the last time we had a major war of choice. We were the ones who were getting pulled out of our classrooms and sent to Viet Nam against our will through the draft. We were the ones who put a million people on the street. I haven’t seen anything even close to that kind of dedication from young people today and I guess that’s because there’s no more draft. You have boomers to thank for that.

  87. katy says:

i’m so not sure what it means, jpark…
i’m guessing that my 2 emails, in ALL CAPS, during the earlier “troubles” (which i was unaware of at the time) didn’t set well with the moderators… that reply was definitely defensive though… and funny…

    aw jeez… now i see the 2nd one is gone again… wtf…
    i liked the 2nd one better…

  88. JPark says:

#87 Hmm, are the moderators becoming Bushlike (that would be drunk on unitary power)? I hope not, this is one of the only blogs I can stand.

  89. katy says:

jpark, many of the commenters here have accused TP of such…
i dunno… but if the “moderation is automatic” it might rule out bias…
i just can’t get a grip on what the regulations are exactly…
especially why some comments post, then vanish, then reappear, then…
    it’s goofy…

  90. JPark says:

#89 I hope TP tells us exactly what posts are ok. To tell you the truth I have had many posts that got through that probably shouldn’t. If it is the spam-filter that is different. Mr. Evil’s post in a different thread may have been filtered out because of the repetition of Ass. I am not a fan of alliteration so I wouldn’t mind if that were banned :)

  91. katy says:

and now the 2nd one is back… @#74… how long?…

Ewww, birth canal, I wish they would have banned it!! :P

  93. katy says:

yea, i know… you ought to try HAVING one! …
it was in the first comment @#62 also, and it’s still there…
and, guess what?! #74 is gone again! wooo-ooo-oooooooooo…

    time for daily show…

  94. katy says:

heh… for anyone curious as to what “having one” refers to,
just before that comment, jpark said something like, “birth canal, yech…” and in minutes it was gone…
