Tweety just said that control of the house means subpoena power. It’s calling hearings, and demanding appearances and testimony.
It will be a difficult and interesting two years.
Tweety just said that control of the house means subpoena power.
And if the conservative pundits are to be believed, the Dems were elected with no clear agenda - except for the investigations they would conduct - meaning the American people have tacitly mandated those investigations.
We need two more. It’s the Senate that I’m intersted in, though. I predicted that we’d take the minimum 6 seats needed for a majority.
Anyway, I have my own observations on tonight’s election, including a Youtube video shot in my own house at how toxic Bush has been to the GOP this election cycle.
Guess Rove has fallen out of favor with the (demi)gods - they took back “the” math.
Tony Snow ought to be quite animated tomorrow…can’t wait to watch him attempt to spin this all the while eating crow.
Not that it wasn’t real work to get here. Congratulations to all the amazing people on the ground who stood up to the most corrupt regime in American history. You have given us a fighting chance.
It was corruption and incompetence that sunk the Republicans in the house and nearly did in the Senate.
Really, it is a lesson for both parties…those left in power; those coming in. The public will not tolerate either for too long, no matter how much you try to control by redistricting and with fear mongering.
The shift should have been more extreme. Another two years of Iraq and it will. If Rumsfeld doesn’t resign….it will. With more convictions involving Abramoff and K street …… it will.
The one thing that I am really sorry for is that the Senate could not have been won by the Dems and by enough a margin to shun Lieberman. Can’t play by the rules; you can’t caucus with us, I say. Now he is again in position to undermine Democratic resolve on foreign policy - to cowtow to Bush. Well, maybe in 2 years the Dems will be in a position of enough strength that they can make Joe a lame duck Senator.
I have gained a lot of respect for certain commentators in this election cycle, and surprisingly by conservatives and Republicans. Notably - Ed Rollins exhibited admirable candor and integrity in his comments on PBS tonight in his criticisms of the adamacy of the Administration and the incompetence of both the WH and Congress. (Remember he was also smart enough to tell K. Harris to get bent some while ago.) George Will has been railing against the incompetence and corruption of the Administration and Congress for months. Philosophically, I hate these guys, but they are honest enough to not blindly follow the fool.
It’s been fun. It should be even better in 2 years. The most gratifying have been the fall of the sanctimonious Santorum, and of the OHIO gang of hoodlums.
Hopefully, the 110th can show a little more integrity and consideration for the Constitution.
its looking like we are going to have an evenly divided sentence.. darth dick gets to cast his tiebreaking vote… maybe all the strenuous activity of having to shuffle back and forth will give him a heart attack.. we can only pray..
What about Daryll’s prayers? Either God’s not into this neocon lifestyle or He just wants to leave this material, secular world to us to run. Of course, both of those statements could be true!
Here is my prayer… “Heavenly father, you know it is time for a change. We need three senate seats to make a difference. Many things have been done in your name that were not of you. From corrupt congressmen to pastors, they have all proclaimed to follow you. But Lord, your will be done. Give us change. Let us take back America for those troops that have made the ultimate sacrifice and those that lost thier lives on 9/ll. Your will be done. I pray for a change. In the name of Jesus, the Christ, Amem.”
Congrats, people. The real work starts here. Good luck. BTW do not support military corporations. Dont let them lie to you. The world will appreciate that. Thanks.
At this moment it looks like the Senate will be split 50-50 giving the deciding vote to the VP. I beilieve that there will be enough anger amongst the Republican Senators to support a vote to impeach both Bush and Cheney. If they were both impeached, my understanding is, Pelosi would serve as President. I don’t think to many, even amongst the Republicans, would object to that change.
The mess in Iraq needs to be dealt with right away. The United Nations in concert with other countries, not the USA, need to be asked to determine through dialogue with Iraqis how to have the USA exit in a manner that would cause the least upheaval. I would envision having a UN peace keeping contingent go in and Americans leave within a one month. The USA needs to be prepared to finance a major Iraqi reconstrution but must not attempt to take a lead in the management or work. The money for the reconstruction can come from the elimination in costs for the war in Iraq. In order to stop the hijacking of Iraqi wealth that was the project Bushco the United States must pass laws acknowledging that any agreements entered into with Iraqis are only actionable if confirmed by the Iraqis after America has left Iraq and each year there after.
The families from New Orleans need to be helped, immediatly. They need to be provided with the financial means to re-establish their lives where they choose and with dignity.
The tax reductions to the richest need to be reversed immediatly. There needs to be greater financial contribution required of the richest 10% of Americans. A tax on money transactions through the banks ought to be considered.
There needs to be a better social program so that everyone has proper dental and health care, access to good educaiton.
You need to remove “religion” from all government institutions.
Please indulge some slightly grandiose self-congratulation from a Dem voter. But this also goes out to the non-Dems who couldn’t take it anymore and helped the cause-
I just wanna send a special shout out to all of the progressive blogs, especially Think Progress. Also, The Daily Show, Air America Radio, Keith Olberman and various programs on PBS. Without them and many more progressive media outlets, this would not have been possible.
WOW!!! no one saw that comming…..but I’m not bitter….or drunk…

No big surprise here.
Now Nancy Pelosi, a very liberal and very female politician, will be 3rd in line for the presidency!
What would be really nice, is if we get control of the senate too. Then we can impeach the hell out of that bastard.

Not sure if that includes the votes made by people who were given flyers by bussed in homeless people explaining that Steele was a democrat though..
November 7th, 2006 at 11:42 pmLittle late for Steele to switch parties now, ain’t it? A-hole.
Sadly, we are still stuck with the Terminator in CA, but I have hopes that we will have emasculated his pet projects (ooh, what an image).
But yeah baby! I think I’d like to paint my house blue in celebration!

November 8th, 2006 at 12:13 amDems, you have our votes and our mandate. Don’t screw this up by becoming as corrupt as the Repubs did.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:23 amFirst thing to do is reverse HR6166.
