As FireDogLake has been reporting, right-wing radio host Laura Ingraham today urged her listeners to obstruct efforts to protect voting rights by jamming a free voter protection hotline.
After playing a recording of DNC Chairman Howard Dean promoting the line to voters, Ingraham suggested her listeners call en masse:
Tell me if you think I’m crazy. This is what I’m thinking. I think we all need to call 1 888 DEM VOTE all at the same time.
The DNC has released audio recordings of some of the prank calls to the hotline. Listen to one call HERE.
Full transcript:
DEAN (recorded): We have a hotline — 1 888 DEM VOTE — anybody can call that. If they feel like there are voting irregularities, we’ll send some folks over to the polling place in a matter of minutes.
(Phone ringing) OPERATOR: Leave a message with your question or press pound to be transferred at no extra charge to your local election protection team or the state Democratic Party. (Dialing) Your call cannot be completed at this time. Please try your call again later.
INGRAHAM: Wait a second! So — (Laughter) you call 1 888 DEM VOTE — otherwise ‘Dim Bulb Vote’ or ‘Dumb Vote’ — and all you do is get tranferred to muzak, then they cut you off. This is what I’m thinking. Tell me if you think I’m crazy. This is what I’m thinking. I think we all need to call 1 888 DEM VOTE all at the same time. And, by the way, when you call, when you call the number — and remember, it’s ‘Dem Vote’ not ‘Dumb Vote’ — when you call the number, as we did, and we got transferred, transferred, then we just got hung up upon. You know, we’re supposed to have these election teams within a matter of minutes, they’re supposed to be coming to the polls. Can you imagine what those people look like? Halloween all over again. So if you have trouble with the poll, you’re supposed to call, via 1 888 ‘Dumb Vote,’ and this is what you get.
OPERATOR: Thank you for calling 1 888 DEM VOTE. To continue in English, press 1. Para continuar in Espanol, oprima el dos.
INGRAHAM: Oh, and if you’re Saddam Hussein, no problem. Vote absentee, in Maryland or Ohio.
I think I know why some folks have been a bit tense, it’s sh*t like this.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:05 pmWhy isn’t she being investigated for the advocation of this crap?!?!?!?!
This stupid ass’s think they are above the law and the fact that no one takes action propounds there perception
November 7th, 2006 at 3:06 pmI think what she said would be considered conspiracy, let’s up this get her locked up.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:08 pmGee…I guess she has no problem being indicted like her congressional cohorts for interfering with an election.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:09 pmFor a party whose idealogy purported includes bringing democracy to the world, they sure have a funny way of showing it…
November 7th, 2006 at 3:10 pmExcuse me, but didn’t someone go to jail for this sort of stunt?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:10 pmIf you put a gun in someone’s hand and they kill someone, does that make you guilty?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:11 pmCan these people GET any sleazier?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:11 pmI was a college radio DJ once, yeah I know, and stuff like this was expressly forbidden because the station could be fined and you would be fired. You couldn’t even give a false weather report. This wasn’t the station’s rules, these were the FCC rules.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:11 pmMaybe Laura would like her home address in upper northwest/American University Park in DC published?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:13 pmAll who would like to see Laura Ingraham waterboareded, raise your hands.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:13 pmThe FBI should put Ingraham under arrest for facilitating GOP vote fraud! GOPers who do this stuff must get prison terms this time > no exceptions!
November 7th, 2006 at 3:14 pmWas that Beavis, or Butthead, leaving the message?
Is there any legal recourse that can be taken?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:14 pmYa ummm my point is uhhh ya it is sooo stupid. I am a republican and I think this number is uhhhh ya I dont know where you are even coming from with this uhhhhhhhhh ya bye.
Dear god I think the genius of the republican voter has just shown itself.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:17 pmThe guy on the prank call sounded like Beavis or Butthead. If this is an exaple of her listenership and the Repugnican Base, then this band of miscreants certainly has relations with the mountain folk cast of movie Deliverance.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:18 pmLaura, as per your request, yes I think you’re crazy.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:18 pmAmerica’s Least Wanted
The guy who left a message certainly was an articulate fellow.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:20 pmReminder: no ad hominem attacks on Ingraham. We need to focus on the issues. These kind of comments undermine our efforts to do that.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:21 pm[comment deleted]
November 7th, 2006 at 3:21 pmOK, is there a district attorney in D.C. who could arrest that bushist oozebox and prosecute it criminally?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:22 pmThat Laura….always thinking of others….She came up with the idea so as to protect whiny Dem/Progs from their whiny selves….
November 7th, 2006 at 3:22 pmRepublinazi terrorists
Anyone still think that the Pedophile Party are anything but terrorist traitors who will stop at absolutely nothing?
And these are the traitor piles of shit that proclaim their Christian ideologies to be better, more wholesom, superior to those of atheists who lack the core criminality that these Republinazi piles of shit express with every crime and atrocity against innocent people that they commit.
God damned Christofascist Republinazis, every one of them!
November 7th, 2006 at 3:22 pmso man coulter does have a sister…..where are you now FCC…?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:23 pmShe needs to be reported to the FCC and have her license yanked.
Steve
November 7th, 2006 at 3:24 pmDesperate to hold onto power at any cost, the Republicans are clearly afraid of something more than terrorists - - the Democrats.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:25 pmI can tell her brush with her own mortality has really made her a better person…

November 7th, 2006 at 3:25 pmIsn’t Laura a cancer survivor? Anyone with such low regard for our democracy and for voters deserves to get spam from the prosthetic tit industry.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:27 pmI just sent her an e-mail, and I am also reporting her to the FBI. I am tired of this usurping of power by a bunch of fascist thugs.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:27 pmOK Judd, I take it back. She shouldn’t be waterboarded.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:30 pmBut I would like to see some prosecutor take this up, yup.

November 7th, 2006 at 3:34 pm“If you put a gun in someone’s hand and they kill someone, does that make you guilty?”
- Comment by Pity The Fool — November 7, 2006 @ 3:11 pm
Duh…Yes! If you have a reasonable expectation that the gun will be used for a murder and you hand it over, then BANG you are guilty of accessory before the fact. If you help plan the crime, like Laura just did, then BANG you are guilty of conspiracy to murder. Since you’re obviously not very bright you should be aware that as the new guy you’ll be expected to bend over for your cellmate.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:34 pmthis is illegal right?! Seriously can we somehow file charges here!?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:34 pmLauder - That’s her old house. She moved in the middle of this year…
November 7th, 2006 at 3:34 pmTake it easy on good old Laura. She’s been rode hard and put away wet too many times — it’s affected her judgement.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:35 pmHer comments today were just the result of the principle by which she lives her life . . . WWACD (”What Would Ann Coulter Do?”).
Of course, little AC wannabe Laura can’t quite live up to the measure of her personal idol…or should that be DOWN to the measure of her personal idol?
LOL — all the sleazy right-wing radio infotainers are in the terminal stages of meltdown today. I”m loving it!
Why do they hate our freedom?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:35 pmJudd : Some of your threads are blocking posts, so a glitch or another GOP cyber attack on TP?

November 7th, 2006 at 3:41 pmWell, the Republicans’ robo-calling was also banned by the FCC, but what Republican is going to enforce the law against a Republican?
Anything that helps them keep ripping off America will just be whitewashed.

Priceless and right on the money!
November 7th, 2006 at 3:42 pmAfter the Clinton impeachment was over, I promised myself I would never listen to or watch Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter again. And I have succeeded here to date.
Reading about Ingraham, however, it is clear she deserves a comeuppance, big time, as Cheney would say.
If a Dem did that, btw, what would be the MCM reaction??? If Franken or Randi Rhodes said something like that about a Rethug phone program? The horror!
November 7th, 2006 at 3:43 pmPlease tell me that Laura can be prosecuted for her stunt.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:44 pm[…] UPDATE: More voter disenfranchisement is going on. It is nice to see public personalities like Laura Ingram outrightly encouraging people to flood voter oversight hotlines with prank calls. If you want to lose a couple IQ points, listen to this genius. […]

November 7th, 2006 at 3:50 pmI think I know why some folks have been a bit tense, it’s sh*t like this.
Comment by ForTruth — November 7, 2006 @ 3:05 pm
A bit tense is an understatement. With the latest round of congressional bills passed (not least the Military Commissions Act and the Posse Commitus Act) I’m one Constitutional interpretation away from being arrested for treason. If Bush gets two more unfettered years, I’ll feel just fine in the hole I’ll be digging in Canada.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:55 pmI’m gonna go with #39, Steve-O.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:56 pmI emailed her earlier today, too. Her site says “don’t lecture” as part of its commentary guidelines. I guess she must have received a lot of lectures from people previously, geez, I can’t imagine why.
And, to whomever posted the question, yes, some guy just got jail time for clogging up the lines of the DNCC in NH in 2004, I believe.
November 7th, 2006 at 3:57 pmWell can it/she/it be prosecuted? And who will?
November 7th, 2006 at 3:58 pmI hate that beatch. She is kinda hot though
November 7th, 2006 at 3:58 pmHmmmm, this should be an interesting test for the FCC. Let’s see how “fair” they want the airways to be!
November 7th, 2006 at 4:00 pmWhere’s Hannibal Lechter when he would be useful?
Bet Laura’s tongue would go well with a nice chianti.
November 7th, 2006 at 4:01 pmIt just goes to show you what Republicans truly think about freedom and democracy. They consider both to be inferior to winning and power. Why else are they encouraging these voter suppression efforts, voter role purgings, obstruct recounts and investigations into voting machines, robo-calling, and flat out lying to prevent people from voting if they aren’t hardline Republican.
This isn’t what democracy is about and this is why the country is in the state it is currently in. It’s because it is being controlled by people who hate freedom and democracy and look with amusement upon anybody who still believes democracy is what keeps the country on top.
November 7th, 2006 at 4:02 pm#31, RUCerious, I just got the same screen a couple of times when I tried to post #48.

November 7th, 2006 at 4:09 pmHow does this witch justify this? She’s in favor of the Iraq War because it supposedly promotes democracy, yet she openly advocates subverting democracy here in the USA. This doesn’t make sense even by the right wing’s twisted logic.
November 7th, 2006 at 4:09 pmThe contempt that the Republicans have for the voters and for democracy itself is evident. What a bunch of sleazebuckets …”big time”. This is like that Hew Hampshah phone-jamming thing … for which someone’s going to jail. You’d think a “lawyer” like Ingraham would know better. Maybe time to get her bar license revoked.
Cheers,

November 7th, 2006 at 4:11 pmI just used the DEM VOTE number. I got through and it told me my poll location with no problems whatsoever. Could it be that LI rigged the sample call to sound as though it was malfunctioning? Nah. A republican wouldn’t lie, would she?

November 7th, 2006 at 4:12 pmif i may go off-topic for a moment, there is an excellent short piece in the nation this week regarding the germans and their attempt to charge the bush crime family with war-crimes….

this is indeed good news…

November 7th, 2006 at 4:20 pmWhy isn’t she being arrested for this?
November 7th, 2006 at 4:20 pmArrest her on-the-air. The FCC should also fine her big time.
James Risser:
now, however, after bush signed the military commissions act, the germans are bringing the charges anew!
The reason the prosecutor gave for the dismissal was that there was “no reason to believe that the accused would not be prosecuted in the United Statesâ€â€“notwithstanding powerful evidence that the officials who controlled prosecution were themselves part of the conspiracy to commit war crimes. The new complaint will be based on the failure of US authorities to investigate and prosecute high-level officials.
this is indeed good news.
Does that mean that it’ll be Dubya’s turn to be uncomfortable when Merkel puts her hands on him? ;-)

btw, I trust TP will be covering anti-Republican dirty tricks as well? Not that it really matters, if the alleged elections will get stolen whole-sale at the tabulation level. It’s just an unprotected Access database after all… on insecure Windows PCs. :(
November 7th, 2006 at 4:31 pmThis is what I think. If she can be sued sue her. If she can be fined fine her.
This is what I think. My relatives fought in the Civil War, WWII, and the War in Afghanistan. They did it for our democracy. I don’t find humor in Laura Ingraham’s statements. There was nothing funny about it. IT DISGUSTED ME.
The lame phone message that the guy left at DEM VOTE really illustrated the issue we have here. The guy speaking was obviously a person who did not and will not educated himself about the issues. He’s not going to Iraq. He’s not trying to find a job after being laid off. He’s not trying to get a college education. But what he will do is take the rights to vote away from those who choose to exercise their rights.

November 7th, 2006 at 4:34 pmIt does if you are Charles Manson. Laura Ingram is doing the same thing. She is telling people to do it. That is the same as Charlie Manson putting the gun in somebody elses hand and then telling them to kill somebody.
November 7th, 2006 at 4:34 pmLeaving a complaint at the FCC is very easy and online. I just left mine:
Just thought you should know that Laura Ingraham is encouraging her listeners to jam the phone lines of the Democratic Party’s voter protection hotline. I seem to remember someone going to jail for similar activities in 2004. If not illegal it is certainly a violation of the public trust and the public air waves. Whether this constitutes voter suppression is up for the courts to decide but this sort of activity should not be tolerated on the radio. I’d appreciate you looking into the matter. Thanks for your time.
I encourage everyone to make a complaint - it’s the only thing the FCC pays attention to.

Now is that sheer political genius, or what?
Right-wingers will be leaving their place in line to head straight for the supermarket checkout to get their very own copy of the Enquirer….: “Perspiring minds want to know….”
The desperation of the criminal enterprise known as the Republican party is showing itself in spades this election day.
Ingraham and her crime accomplices are quite cognizant of the fact that their faux-patriot house of cards is crumbling around them as more and more Americans come to their senses and see the damage the GOP and Bush have done to their Democracy and their country’s image worldwide.
If prosecutors can use the RICO statutes to break up inner-city gangs and put those thugs behind bars (and rightly so) why not use the same laws to go after this obviously organized GOP effort to tamper with the election process which we all know that the sole goal is to disenfranchise and repress opposition voters? A criminal gang is a criminal gang, regardless if their peddling dope in the barrio or working in tandem to undermine other American’s right to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote unmolested.
It’s clear that the Ingrahams, Hannitys (urging Dems on his television show to not vote) along with the rest of their sleaze-slinging ilk seem to feel that the constitution is nothing more than a wadd of toilet paper they use to wipe their skanky asses with.
Time to put and end to these bastard’s terrorist activities. And time to put a few of them behind bars.

November 7th, 2006 at 4:48 pmI sent her two emails.
One was from the ‘conservative in me’ telling her how stupid she was by giving the libs something to complain about. Lord knows the conservative base would have brought ‘us’ through, but now she has legitimized the left’s loony paranoia and we will never hear the end of it.
The other email was from the ‘liberal in me’ thanking her for the blatant voter suppression… (or at least suppression of protection) and the golden opportunity to say ‘told you so’ to all my friends on the right.
Both emails were rife with epithets and namecalling - I wouldn’t want to appear partisan after all…

November 7th, 2006 at 5:06 pmThe repubs have not been gracious winners and now we can fully expect that they will be angry and bitter losers. They simply do not possess the ability to acknowledge the humanity necessary to be effective and trusted leaders. Maturity has led most of us to give up junior high pranks and to cope with life as an adult. No so the repubs. Their insecurity coupled with their greed to take as much as possible from the world is not the kind of behavior Americans expect from theri political leaders. They will be turned out of office because of what they have done, not because of any games played by the opposition.

November 7th, 2006 at 5:11 pmIf republicans believe that voting is such a sacred part of democracy that it was worth invading Iraq for, then why do they treat it like a joke here? If it’s sacred then why all the dirty tricks? Is this what they want to teach Iraqi citizens about voting? Democrats aren’t engaging in dirty tricks because they want to protect everyone’s right to vote and that should be the proud responsibility of republicans as well.

Wrong, Douglas. We’re the ones who keep playing fair. Republicans are the ones who think playing fair is a joke. You’re under the mistaken impression that everyone is as scummy as the GOP. “Anything to win.” That’s the motto, right?

That sounds suspicious right there. It should just go to the EPT.

I’s jus gotta tells ya that there phone number ain’t for “dem” voters, like meanin’ “dem guys over thar”. It’s “Dem” voters, like in “Dem-o-crats”, you know, like the po-litical party tryin to saves our country’s a**. The truth is, there are people on both sides of the fence intimidating others, calling and giving false voting information, in fact misinformation abounds in this election.
Give us an example of Democrats trying to scam Republican voters. Have you heard of any robocalling in Orange County, CA, telling anglo Republicans to vote on a different day or in a different location?
Where I am, they are using electronic voting machines that have no paper trail, there is no way to verify/validate votes if a machine fails.
It’s the Republicans who have blocked any efforts to get paper trails. It’s in their best interest to have unverifiable results. Talk to your own legislators about it and see how far you get. If the Dems take back the House, you’ll finally start to see some action on it.

November 7th, 2006 at 6:38 pmBringing her name up just adds to her “popularity”. The way to get her fired is to make sure enough people, who may or may not listen to her show regularly, make the statement that they WILL listen to her show for one week, and make absolutely sure that they go out of their way to not purchase one single product or service advertised on her show. That way, you only have to keep track of her advertisers, and not listen to her rant.

You mean, the Michael Moore whose F9/11 movie has been proven factually correct again, and again, and again, and again, and again!
You really shouldn’t open yourself up for such a wide swinging left hook. Are you talking about the same Far from right 9/11 in which he totally faked a newspaper headline from a Missouri paper. The paper was an Illinois paper and the headline on the date that the paper showed was nothing like it showed in the movie. The headline that Micheal Moore showed was “Al Gore Really Wins”. That headline actually did appear in the paper that day but it was in the viewers letters section and it was the headline of a viewer’s letter stating her personal opinion. Micheal Moore photo-shopped it and totally faked it. What is the problem with that you say? Well, succinctly, if one part is proven to be a total deception, what credibility is left to anything else regardless of it’s accuracy?

November 7th, 2006 at 10:13 pmWell, fortunately for you libs, we’ll probably get out of Iraq now and the house will probably begin impeachment proceedings. Unfortunately for the rest of us, the economy that Bush inherited that was in a tail spin and he salvaged by lowering taxes and is now steamrolling. Was anybody on this web site aware of the fact that with a lower tax rate then ever before, the US government took in more money than EVER in history? I realize that most liberals aren’t going to understand the impact of that statement but it means that the economy today as far and beyond what it was during Slick Willy’s best year (1999). So now the first order of business for the Democratic Congress will be to roll back the tax cuts which will mean that a family of four that has to make over 40 thousand dollars a year before they pay thier first dime of taxes will probably now begin to pay it in their mid 20’s or low thirties. But the rhetoric will be that it will only be the top one percent that is being affected. We’ll see. And the end result of that will be that the economy will be effectively choked off.
Just my opinion.

And as divorced from ecomomic reality (and history) as if you’d just paddled in on an ice floe. The federal tax cuts spurred states and localities to raise taxes to make up the shortfall - making the effects of the federal tax cuts an illusion. The stock market has taken six years to go from 11,000 to 12,000.
Research how fast it rose during the Clinton years.

I realize that and understand it. But you’re so focused on that that the other periipheral issues that the Dems push will kill the economy. So, out of the war good. unemployment and economy in a nose dive because of tax increases bad. They will probably push socialized medicine that will cost lots and lots of money. Who knows what other social programs they have brewing that will cost more and more money.
You’re right about the Dow Jones during Clinton’s years. But look at the chart for the Nasdaq. In March of 2000, when Clinton was still the Pres, it was over 5000. When bush was innaugaurated, it was below 3500. It was down 30 percent before Bush even came into office. So he inherited the mess.
And you can say whatever you want about the states raising taxes. That’s neither here nor there. All I see is tax cuts took affect in 2003. Today, we have more money in the federal coffers than ever before in history with a lower tax rate. And, by the way, throughout Bush’s entire administration, I don’t think I remember seeing unemployment even go above 7 percent, do you?
The government needs to get out of the business of being a nanny. If it did that, it wouldn’t need so much money and it would be able to operate with lower taxes. It’s pretty simple. You pull out the budget. Figure out what you don’t really need. And stop spending the money. That’s what I do with my home budget. Why can’t the government do the same?
November 7th, 2006 at 10:51 pmBig thinker, David, why don’t you have your own show homo?
November 7th, 2006 at 10:53 pmsambo4, you are an idiot.
6 year to move the Dow from 11K to 12K is.. just under a 1.5% return per year. Bush’s spectacular economy (by the recently touted Dow Jones metric) grew slower than a decent checking account and slower than the cost of living. From Mid-2002 to the 1st 1/3 of 2003 the Dow Jones was dipping down into the 7Ks!! That was well after 9/11. The economy is just RECOVERING despite a terrible run by this president. Also don’t forget….
THE NASDAQ IS LOWER NOW THEN WHEN BUSH TOOK OFFICE! NASDAQ composite today closed at 2375.88, about half it’s high valuation. The low point for the NASDAQ during Bush’s terms was late 2002, well after 9/11 and it was around 1,100. It had to fall to mid-1990’s levels (95ish) to get that low (that was WELL before the tech bubble BTW).
Corporate Profits are way way up which explains why the market is rebounding (pathetically) but the number of Americans below the poverty line is still WAY up for Bush. The number of uninsured Americans is still WAY up for Bush. Unemployment is OK but low-mid jobs have had flat wages and more people are working 2 jobs to get by. ..Don’t forget that people fall off unemployment rolls if they’re unemployeed TOO long also, unemployment numbers are very much guesses.
This economy is NOT doing all that well. Yes, my taxes are down by a sliver but my credit card debt is way up. My costs are up at every turn. I’m no better off.
I don’t know what your smoking. If you’re not in the top 1% of U.S. earners, you must be on something strong.
P.S. Taxes were up because it’s hard to keep America’s economy down in the short term and because corporate profits are WAY up. Too bad our spending is growing an order of magnitude faster than our tax revenues. I bet you are real proud the China now owns a very significant portion of our national Debt.. including the largest share of the 2 TRILLION additional that Bush tacked on. You might as well send your tax payments directly over seas.
