Early CNN Senate Exit Polls

ThinkProgress has obtained CNN’s early Senate exit polls. Early exit polls are highly unreliable, but information needs to be free.

Just remember, fellow citizens. Up until about 8:00 PM on election night, 2004, almost every exit poll in the nation had Kerry leading heavily, almost by a landslide. Late that night, things magically flipped in Bush’s favor. But, we’re watching much more closely in 2006. Maybe things will hold up.

  11. Andrew Leigh » Blog Archive » But what the heck, let’s look at the exit polls anyway says:

[...] CNN’s early exit polls have been leaked to ThinkProgress (assuming they’re not lying to us, that is). If they’re accurate, the Dems have won the House, and may have won the Senate. Tradesports now (6.20pm US EST) have the GOP an 11% chance to keep the House, and a 68% chance to keep the Senate. [...]

  13. Tiki says:

I’m sorry….I don’t want Progressives running my country….it would be insanity. Example: Save the Whales, but Abort Babies. Of course we could just give up and surrender in Iraq…and give Muslim Extremists a clear victory, opening not only us but the whole world to more and stronger attacks….and then try to handle them the Democrat way…like a police matter having cops with handguns going after terrorists with machineguns and bombs. Bury your head in the sand as deep as you want…it won’t mean 9-11 did not happen, and it won’t make the extremists go away.

  14. NewNameAcquired says:

Exit polls will differ from the actual polls because Republicans can’t hack who people SAID they voted for, they can only hack the votes in the machines.

BTW… I feel like I’m on a new site with this new orange and blue layout.

  15. Rick says:

Whoa, whoa, whoa. The exit poll numbers on Tennessee do not show early voting. Junior’s camp believe they won early voting by 8 points or more, and over 840,000 people voted early. The election commission is projecting a total turnout (early and Nov. 7) of 1.9 million. So if Junior is down by only 3 points in exit polling, that means WE WIN. So don’t go calling us self-destructive or anything. It ain’t over ’til the fat lady concedes.

When I was driving cross country from California to Georgia last year, I spent some time in Arizona, because there was much there I wanted to see. I started calling it ‘East Orange County’, because the people I encountered were rude and negative – even the Native Americans. It made New York City feel like Southern Hospitality. I wouldn’t wait to leave. And oddly, New Mexico was the exact opposite. So, what’s the deal there in Arizona? And how does someone as liberal as you stand it?

  25. jim says:

Democrats vote early. No jobs. Bussesof the homeless to polls. Government workers.

GOP vote late, after they clock out from their jobs.

This is why the early exit polls don’t reflect the vote. The GOP hasn’t voted yet.

So, what’s the deal there in Arizona? And how does someone as liberal as you stand it?

    Comment by unbelievable

    Lots of weed.

Just kidding, seriously, I live in a liberal town, Flagstaff, otherwise the state is full of a-holes. I don’t know what’s up with the energy here, someone told me it was a predatory energy, “I got mine, screw you”. Arizona has a long history of stupidity. Heck we don’t recognize medicare here, we have our own version, the only state that does. AZ didn’t provide public mental health care until the 80’s. No public medical care in our consitution. Last in intelligence, last in public education, and all kinds of other bad statistics here. I love the weather.

  47. BStu says:

Hmm. Well, MO is close, but we all knew that. TN is still close, too, when that looked like it was trending towards a strong GOP victory. AZ being this tight is amazing. If not for the registration requirements being tightened, we could have been leading there, too.

MD is closer than any Democrat should be comfortable with. I guess lying hobos might be a successful campaign tactic. The rest look about what could be expected, though I guess RI is a bigger lead than might have been anticipated. I’m disappointed there’s no CT results as a strong (if not leading) showing by Lamont would bode well for the House seats in play.

#25 – Thinkprogress: Exit polls are not highly unreliable. They predict elections results with a tremendous accuracy all over the world, except in those places where fraud is present (See USA in 2004 and 2002).

Let’s put this in the positive: Exit polls are highly reliable…

… Except in the cases where elections are rigged… As they have been the past three election cycles in the USA.

  49. Bluedog49 says:

KJCity520: “The Exit Polls were closer in 2004 in Ohio, PA, and FL no huge leads as one poster claimed. They were more like 50-48 so these numbers are at least a little better. Remember, Grain of salt of course.”

From the National Election Data Collection Archive: “There was a whopping 11.7% difference between exit polls and reported
vote margins calculated from this Ohio precinct-level data. The explanation offered by the pollsters
Edison & Mitofsky was: “Kerry voters completed more exit polls than Bush voters”. However, the
National Election Data Archive’s analysis of observed exit poll patterns shows that Ohio’s precinct-level
discrepancy cannot be plausibly explained by higher exit poll completion rates by Kerry voters; and are
more consistent with outcome-altering vote miscounts.”

    Allow me to enlighten you.

The GOP are the bosses who vote at their leisure.

The majority of the Democrats are the over taxed middle-class, who were in line at 6:30 AM like me ready to vote before they went to work.

Now go sob in your pillow, moron

This is my prediction, and I am usually correct:

  63. YourbuddyMitch says:

Exit polls don’t suck, but what they did for the rep. in 2000 and 2004 was it gave them a barometer to judge what they needed to make up point wise.

  64. An Independent says:

Tiki-You are woefully uninformed. 9/11 happened because GWBush & Co. dismantled the safety net that President Clinton has constructed QUIETLY with the assistance of all our intelligence agencies and the armed forces. Had the election not been stolen, President Gore would most surely have kept the national protections QUIETLY in place, and 9/11 would have never happened. The Dems don’t play politics with national security. Bush doesn’t know any other way.

  65. JesusChrist_GodOfWAR says:

Which is exactly why the State Department should have demanded a complete and proper recount in 2000 and 2004 right here in the good ‘ol USofA.

Time to go down some proper microbrew and watch to see if/how the GOPedophiles steal this election.

The House is the voice of the people. The voice has spoken, well, about a few months ago: they want a change. This is why I think the House will be Owned by the dems. The senate will be tougher. I would not be surprised if the GOP keeps it, but I do stick to my sources: Dems win both

And you’re so close to one of the coolest places on Earth… :)

Yeah, it was exactly as you described – people acting like you were bothering them for just being within 50 feet of them. Everyone was on cellphones and in Sedona, everywhere you parked required a permit or you’d get towed. I even got harrassed at some reserve by two cowboy Apaches because I didn’t have the necessary permit to be there, because the sign that said you needed one faced the other way from the direction I entered. And they acted like I was a criminal who was trying to deny them their $15 – tried to intimidate me and scare my cats. I just left.

Must be great for the tourism…

Having said that, poor Tucson has had an influx of Newly Rich, clogging up the foothills and freeways and dragging down Tucson’s overall vibe. But Tucson is definitely NOT like Phoenix, Chandler, Scottsdale, etc. Those are more like the Arizona that the person mentions. I got mine, screw you. Hang in there AZ, you have one of the most beautiful states in the nation. Too bad the politics are so ugly outside of Tucson and Flagstaff.

nullRandyGF: “The Dem agenda is no clearer than the Rep agenda.”

The Democratic agenda has been well-known for months. They stood on the capitol steps and announced it months ago. If you didn’t know about it, it’s probably because you only get your info from network television assuming you wanted to know about it. Pelosi has even listed exactly what she will do in the first 100 hours of Dem control of the House. I do agree, though, that Republicans have no clear plan.

  84. PRob says:

    @Miztruman, ForTruth , unbelievable

I can understand why you are all hating on AZ, but you all sound pretty negative yourselves.

I’ve been in Phoenix 11 years and it hasn’t always been this way. People used to welcome new comers and were genuinely happy to share the beautiful state.

It has become crazy in the past 4 or 5 years. People are flooding the cities statewide, driving up the cost of living, and trampling over everything. It’s not the place it used to be. : (

As far as dealing with AZ Republicans, its exhausting. All we can do is keep shining the light and not be negative (hint hint)… or depressed.

BTw… care to join us in reality?

Inaccurate sample ballots describing Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Senate candidate Michael S. Steele as Democrats were handed out to voters in at least four polling sites in Prince George’s County this morning.

The ballots were distributed by people who said they arrived by buses this morning from Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Erik Markle, one of the people handing out literature for Ehrlich, who is seeking reelection, and Steele, the current lieutenant governor who is campaigning to replace retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D), said he was recruited at a homeless shelter in Philadelphia.

That is from TODAY’S Washington Post article.

I would think not at all since they are exit polls (i.e. people buttonholed today when actually casting ballots then walking out of polling places after).

CNN loved to revel in Republican defeat. I am sorry that Maryland and Virginia will most likely disappoint CNN and the other talking heads. Look for Steele to be sent to Washington.

  104. tarazan says:

If all pieces fit in place tonight as predictions and projections say…looks like a rout.

  105. Sylocat says:

The good thing is, the more votes the GOPedophiles have to steal to rig the elections, the greater risk of something going wrong. Maybe one of these days someone in the organization will spill the beans (our generation’s version of Deep Throat), and then the American public will finally have had enough.

There are only so many people who can be disenfranchised before even idiots like the major news networks notice. Hopefully even Americans have a breaking point.

  106. unbelievable says:

So far, things look good – since the polls that closed at 7:00 were mostly Southern Red States… and the Dems are again House Members even in Georgia (not my district however…)

I’m actually hopeful as the Dems keep picking up seats…

Let’s hope the 70% voter turn out really does mean something this time.

  107. greg says:

Go Democrats!! lets not loose to these myopic thinkers again!

  108. Hoping for a late night surge says:

Sad the country isn’t turning out.

I’m just glad that we won’t have to sit through a morning tomorrow with Katie being all ‘non biased’ and giddy on Today. Hopefully Chris Matthews won’t make an appearance wearing no pants and a tired smirk from partying all night.

Sick of the media. Sick of a “Blue Man Group” voter turn out. That’s okay. The Elephants will be here to pick up the pieces after the Dems break everything.

Take a picture of that 12000 Dow. Won’t last past tonight.

Praying for a late RED surge! Hopefully Tennessee and Arizona hold.

    Disappointing.

Good. Your side needs a huge dose of humility.

  111. Hoping for a late night surge says:

    Hillarious.

So broken that the American People chose 8 years with the GOP after 8 years with Billy Boy.

No need to chat all night. I’ll sit here and toast to our GOP Senate. You can have the House.

2008 is right around the corner.

The way your comments are coming out, I’m guessing that you must live in Colorado and voted YES on 44. That’s the one that allows possession for Mary Jane, by the way. And by your comments, you’re too busy tokin’ to follow the GOPeality of the situation overseas.

    Support our troops.

    I’m out.

Early exit polls are highly unreliable, but information needs to be free.

I almost passed out. Very true and thank you for providing the information with the statement to follow. I appreciate the information.

Seriously. You guys are funny when you get stirred up. Reminds me of Dean 2 years ago. YYYAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW.

The last week surge toward the RED was from when the GOP voters on the fence remembered how much they disliked the Donkeys even more then the guy in the White House. Lesser of two evils.

I just recommend that every one cash out of the market now. And head to Canada. Come back in 08 when McCain takes it.

    Until then….

Yalegrad, thanks for telling us Bush is evil. We already know though.

Funny how the neocons showed up here thinking they would get to gloat, and then, when it isn’t going their way – they cut and run like the chickens that they are instead of sticking around to support the government as they demanded that we do…

  119. yalegrad says:

    Unbelievable.

Exactly. Speaking of cut and run….my guess is the Dem led HOUSE will be leading that charge.

Let’s see if it’s hack the vote 2006, or if the real winners will actually get to be sworn in. I have little faith, and have seen what the evil Diebold machines have done and are doing. Yea MoveOn. for offering a $250,000 reward for proof of voter fraud. I hope no one is able to take them up on it due to little to no fraud – but if there is fraud, please let someone notice and take up MoveOn.org on their monetary reward offer.

Evidently our Yale grad got gentleman “c”’s in English, specifically, in the area of reading comprehension – otherwise, he’d know the snippet he posted was from someone on his side of the political divide!

  124. Skull / Bones » Blog Archive » The Conspiracy thwarted? says:

[...] I had to scrouge back to find the Election Day Exit Polls for the ten Senate races worth watching.  The story from various partisan conspiracy theorists is that the exit polls have not correlated more or less precisely with the election outcome as of late, indicating chicanery.  Thus, Mary Mattalin is said to have told Bush early on the evening of Election day 2004 that he had lost.  [...]

  125. Make Them Accountable / A scary thought says:

[...] The exit polls that leaked out in the late afternoon ended up matching the final results almost exactly — nothing like what happened in those other Bush-era elections. The razor-close races all broke late for the Democrats, unlike Florida in 2000 or Ohio in 2004…and when that happened, there were no major charges of fraud, no “Brooks Brothers Riot,” and no demand for a recount. The last two losers — Conrad Burns of Montana and George Allen of Virginia — went quietly into the autumn night, despite relatively close vote tallies. There appear to be no other Rovian stunts, like calling in the GOP’s chits with Joe Lieberman to get him to caucus with the Senate Republicans. And there was no October surprise, not in Iran and not back home. [...]

  126. Hopes rising: UPDATED at Hugo Schwyzer says:

[...] Oh Lord, early exit polls raise my expectations again.  Why do I fall for this every time?  Will it all turn out to be a mirage, just as it did in 2004?  Were those who answered the poll questions deliberately lying, just to excite and then cruelly dash my hopes? [...]
