Despite widespread progressive victories,

the Washington Post declares the United States is “a nation that leans slightly right of center.”

  1. RealScientist says:

I agree. The Democrats are slightly right of center. It would be better if the party moved to the left. But the party is nearly as enmeshed with the corporations as the GOP.

  2. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Geez, where’s the old journalistic integrity of the old Washington Post???

  3. CpnJustice says:

Well, I don’t disagree with that statement, actually. Compared to the rest of the world, even most of our liberals aren’t that liberal.

  4. ForTruth says:

    That damn liberal media!

  5. DrSinker says:

Placed with respect to the rest of the world, this is fairly inaccurate. We’re actually pretty far to the right. Ask Chomsky.

  6. Sharon Cox says:

What our country need’s right now is a bunch of bleeding heart libral’s like me..Then we could bring it back to a center, front and center that is…LOL..Blessings..Next Peace

  7. June says:

I’d say that’s mostly accurate considering how many Democratic candidates were playing up their “Conservative” values to get elected, but remember that even Nixon looks like a “Commie” compared to this administration.

  8. Swordsbane says:

You mean “damn idiot media” The Media isn’t liberal or conservative. They’s stupid.

Eh.. Just labels anyway. The WP article (and the article about it) doesn’t actually SAY anything. Stop worrying about what to call something and just worry about weather it’s a good idea. I get called a Republican by Democrats and a Democrat by Republicans, a Conservative by Libertarians and a Facists by the Greens. None of those labels mean anything unless you know the definition the speakers had in mind when they used them. Since you usually can’t figure that out without being able to read minds, what does it matter?

If you can’t promote an idea without invoking the name of a political party, then how can you convince anyone the idea is sound?

  9. Kat says:

The press, MSM, has yet to receive their “spanking” for all the harm they have done to America over the ast 6 years, for all they havoc they and their misleading stories have wreaked upon our country. They’ll get theirs! They have endorsed the worst of humanity, have backed outrageous behavior, and have fully cooperated in the attempts to ruin the country and make obsolete the Constitution. I am not ready to let them off the hook. They need to start changing, and soon, or maybe, just perhaps, theywill be forced to go the way of their Republican brethren – out. Some are already starting to change their tunes. It has been a bit hilarious over the last 24 hours to see some of them actually start to realize that their “BS as usual” is over. It is funny to witness them becoming hypocrites yet again – but this time, from a different side of the fence. Will Fox survive at all if it does not change (not that I care, but it will be interesting to see – I hope they fold, personally)? I am all for demanding honesty and integrity from the press, as WELL as from politicians. This fight is not not over yet!

So, when are progressive sites like TP going to stop censoring the comments of Americans? It’s about time, kids… we are adults, and we can “handle” the English language, in ALL of it’s glory and horror. Time to grow up, boys! Funny how so many other sites, progressive and liberal, do not censor the way this site does.

  10. dln says:

In an international sense, this is pretty much accurate, although the country (even democrats) are rather more to the right than “slightly” compared to other nations.

Either way, this is not really a startling statement in an article, but quite accurate.

Um – our nation IS right of center. Does anything think the American Left is akin to the Euro Left? How about the Latin American Left?

  13. ForTruth says:

So when is Scooter and DeLay going down? We’re on a roll here.

  14. hil says:

i think they are correct on this… look at the rest of the “westernized” world in comparison. we’re slightly right still… but with this election we’re moving it back in the proper direction… at last

  15. Lesly says:

Um, the Washington Post is correct. We’ve been sliding right since the 60’s. Liberalism didn’t just come back with an election after a long hiatus, especially when you consider that some of those Democrats elected along the Rust Belt are blue dogs.

  16. paul says:

Bill. I think you’re right. I believe the fact that this nation is right of center probably goes a long way towards explaining that this is the greatest country on the planet.

  17. j swift says:

American Society has been easing further to the right since the Reagan era with the Fundie wingnuts leading the way. The counter-counter culture has been at work and not many people paid attention since they were not acting like self-indulgent hippies dancing naked in the mud.

What happened last night was a revolt against incompetence and corruption not some drastic shift left.

  18. midwestblue says:

These new Democrats who were elected are NOT right of center, and it’s time the MSM started to realize it. You don’t counter the extreme, far right with a right of center agenda. I think The Post is just hoping this is so–maybe it’s their wish, but it is not reality.
(By the way, I haven’t seen any kudos to Howard Dean for his fifty state strategy. Without that, Democrats would not be taking over the Senate. No more neocon Supremes! Thank you, Governor Dean).

Actually we were on the list of having the most public corruption this year. And thats what ‘right of center ‘means.

  21. Jeremy Henderson says:

Given that most other countries have universal health care, and the US has all but dismantled the strength of labor unions in this country, and that 23 of the 24 states who’ve had a gay marriage amendment on their ballots have voted to ban it, I’d say slightly right of center is being a little generous. Compared to the rest of the world, we’re pretty solidly to the right.

  22. Swilly says:

On a total global perspective you are center of right. The States has high individual ratings, no social health care, low union engagement, low progressive tax system and high corporate invlovlement.

  23. June says:

  27. Rosencrantz says:

They only say that because the majority of people have no idea what the parties represent any more. This is evident by the belief that Republicans still represent fiscal responsibility and reducing the rold Gov’t plays in our lives and the belief that Democrats spend too much money on social programs and over tax to make up for it.

Neither of these has been true for decades yet people have essentially branded the parties so they don’t have to think too much about what people really stand for. They just say “I believe in less government and less spending…I must be a republican” and then vote republican no matter what the actual record is.

THe same is also true of the so-called positions being defined by Republicans, such as how they are pro-life yet love war and the death penalty but do nothing about poverty and hate national health care. Liberal or progressive issues require more thought than just “for it or against it” and often you have to look at individual cases and the human effect.

Most other countries, much poorer than we have healthcare and you call right of center a little generous whn the right would rather spend a million dollars on a smart bomb to blow up some date groves?

  31. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

Paul clearly doesn’t measure “greatest country on the planet” by standard of living, infant mortality rate, average level of education, percentage of people with no health care, percentage of people living below the poverty line, knowledge of world history, or percentage of people who participate in elections. Good point, though.

Now, here’s my take on Von Rummy’s defection, courtesy of Newman and Redford.

  36. Citizen Dad says:

The last serious effort to enact universal health care, in 1994, helped lead the GOP to victory at the polls that year. The increasing tax burden on the middle class led to the election of anti-tax conservatives. Increasing attacks on the values of people of faith led to a huge conservative turnout for President Bush in 2004. Judicial decrees mandating gay marriage in some states have led to the enactment of two dozen state gay marriage bans.

Yup, despite the results of yesterday’s election, one can make the argument that this election was more about change for the sake of change than it was an endorsement of the “progressive” big government agenda. This is consistent with the re-election election of Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson. It also is consistent with the election of new Democrats like Tester, Sestak, Webb and Shuler, all of whom ran to the right to win their seats. Time will tell if they told their voters the truth, or just gave them the usual Dem shuck ‘n’ jive.

The guy I’m intrigued by is Shuler. He’s a low-tax, pro-life baptist who hunts. It will be interesting to see what his voting record is two years from now, when he’s running for re-election.

The guys I’m happiest for are Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson. They are both decent men who deserve a few more conservative Dems to have lunch with.

  38. unbelievable says:

Citizen Dad – 1994 was almost 13 years ago. Come into the 21st century already. Things change. Most Americans want National Healthcare. And we’re the only Industrialized Nation that doesn’t have it.

  39. Matt Bors says:

We are a right of center country.

Look at the other Western Industrialized nations. Clearly we are one of –if not the most –conservative. What’s wrong with someone saying so?

  43. tom baker says:

sorry to do this, but my previous post bears repeating:

It just typical, but lets us not loose sight of who really rallied the troops. HOWARD DEAN should take credit for this overwhelming decision made by the electorate. But, all the left of center (center money whores) will claim credit, not deserved. Bill and Hill should thank the REAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY(the DNC, lead by DEAN) for their success.
The DEMOCRATIC PARTY is really a little more left than people want to admit. And all will be happy that it is in the future.

Coming from a citizen of that country, thats really meaningless.

    Comment by DrSinker

Completely right. I mean both rights…you are correct and US is a rightist country whether there are Dems (moderate) or Reps (neocons).

  49. Gregor Samsa says:

the United States is “a nation that leans slightly right of center.”

And I’d day that is a very accurate description.

The Democrats are not interested in challenging the status quo but in maintaining it. They simpy disagree with Republicans on exactly how to maintain it. When it comes to foreign policy, both groups will do whatever it takes to further American economic interests, even foistering coups d’etats and “regime changes” (the invasion of Iraq being a notable exception).

It’s basically a cosmetic difference, really.

Good question. The right is fascism, nazism, state power over every social, economical and political activities. The left is a response to oppresive regimes, politics and social programs aimed against the working class.

  53. Parrotlover77 says:

A million people have already said it and I just want to agree: the United State IS right of center! The average democrat is very far right of the average ThinkProgress visitor. However, history tends to move toward liberalism each generation, with minor setbacks (like the last ten years). So I’m not worried. Eventually, when I’m very old, I might be talking about those darn liberal kids. ;-)

  57. wallaby says:

As someone above said, it is a question of perspective. Compared to most second or third world countries, the USA is toward the left. Compared to other western/industrialised/democratic nations – the USA is a fair way to the right.

Others also beat me to questioning upon what criteria Americans continue to judge their nation as the greatest country on earth. Is it the number of aircraft carriers?

  58. paul says:

Well, I know most here hate America and will just consider me a cheerleader, but here goes.

This is a great country. Millions of people immigrate here. Not many are trying to leave. Those in poverty here, generally have a place to live, televisions, major appliances and often cars. There is almost an unlimited freedom of information. The evil U.S. corporations you lament, are mainly responsible for the computer you’re are staring at, as well as countless other technological advances that have benefitted everyone. Because healthcare is not socialized, when the world needs a great doctor, medical advance or a new drug, the first place they turn is here. (those affordable Canadian drugs are mostly developed in American Pharmecutical labs).

Look in the parking lot at work (95% of you have jobs), or in your grocery store, or on television; there is an incredible amount of choice in this country. And an incredible amount of freedom. The best part, if you don’t like it, you can change it. The will of the people here is counted down to the last vote and supercedes everything else. There are many things to be disappointed in about America. No place is perfect. But, if you are not willing to concede that this is the greatest country on the planet, you’re misinformed or just denying the reality.

  59. David Carlisle says:

“Liberal” and “conservative” are as much ways to describe yourself as they are to describe other people and systems. The U.S. might consider itself to be conservative, but a lot of that is due to the fact that they’ve been hearing that from talk radio for years. If we now start 30 years of reinforcing the idea that “liberals are good” and “America is liberal” might eventually mean that fewer people call the U.S. “mostly conservative.”

“Liberal”as a dirty word has gone unchallenged for so long that fewer people are willing to classify themselves as “liberal”, even if a self-declared liberal would label them that way. You ask somebody if they believe in a higher minimum wage, more money spent on education, government regulations on business, government policies to protect the environment. They say “yes” on all counts. But, if you ask them “are you a liberal”, – they don’t want to associate themselves with that word. Today, it’s only people who are proud to call themselves “liberal” who call themselves “liberal”.

You talk to really hard right conservatives and ask them what a liberal stands for, they’ve got no idea. They can’t tell you what liberals want, they can only tell you what they WISH liberals want. They’ve got this imaginary, straw- liberal in their heads. To them, a liberal is somebody whose beliefs are the opposite of their own. “I’m for goodness, so liberals must be against goodness.” On top of that, their ideas about liberals generally aren’t informed by what liberals say, but by what other conservatives have told them that liberals say. “The guy on the radio said that liberals are against goodness.”

There’s even less understanding of socialism, which is why “socialist” is such a popular epithet. It gets thrown around as if government control of services was a completely foreign concept in the U.S., despite the public school system and the postal service.

  60. David Carlisle says:

Here we go- somebody here starts off by saying “I know most people here hate America.” Who told him that? Liberals or conservatives? If you criticize something, that means you hate it? How many people on Think Progress have used the term “I hate America”? It’s a perfect example of conservatives making up their own fanciful ideas about what liberals think. That’s an awful lot of what conservatism in the U.S. is about these days, telling the liberals what their ideas are, no matter what the truth is.

  61. David Carlisle says:

What does it mean that “we have an incredible amount of freedom” in the US? I don’t deny it, but here in the Czech Republic, we’ve got an incredible amount of freedom, freedom of information, expression and otherwise.
Hundreds of thousands of people immigrate to the Czech Republic, too. They don’t immigrate because the country has it’s own reputation for being a bastion of freedom. They come because it’s richer than the country they left.

Have you ever experienced socialized medicine first hand, or just heard about it? Maybe you have. I have, and it wasn’t bad.

I consider myself a patriotic American, and when I return, I’ll have a good amount of knowlege to make a comparison. Patriotism isn’t just saying “my country is best”, it’s making an informed judgement about what is and isn’t good about your country with some perspective.

  62. the fly-man says:

Paul, thanks for your fine narrative on the benefits of corporations on our existence. Unfortunately corporations are the 800 pound gorilla in the political room. The problem is the fictional Conservative nirvana the right has failed to DELIVER. Go read Restate or the Captain and see how proud they are of the miserable performance of their party to steer the boat. They crashed the party boat after a binge of recklessness for spending that will probably never be equaled. The real loss for them is the squandering of the opportunity the country had to see conservative principles actually function. Guess what? Their principles and execution of them have crushed the conservative movement back to a feeble impotent fantasy. You can’t project what is good, you have to live it and share it with everyone, especially when you take peoples lives and money and treat them like they are yours to waste, as you see fit, just to promote a model of grandeur thinking.

  63. theswan says:

    Oh, that liberal press.

  64. Democrat Soldier says:

Well, I know that every Progressive poster loves America, no maatter how much the right-whiners try to spin it. Just because we don’t swoon at the sight of Pres. Bush in a flight suit on the deck of an aircraft carrier under the sign his administration put up (Mission Accomplished!) does not mean people automatically hate America!

We posters, here at TP, are excited about the cyclical nature of politics. As the right-whiners have noticed, there are fewer Republicans in power. Not just in the House & Senate, but in state legislatures as well. The majority of Democrats that won did so because they represented a change of the “same old, tired ’stay the course’ and bow to the President” ultra-radical far-right faction of the extreme wing of the Republican party.

The people who lost were the extreme right-wing (FROMER Sen. Santorum) and those who won (for the most part) are the party of the center: higher minimum wage, stop trashing the Constitution in the name of patriotism, fiscal responsibility and no more “borrow and squander”, no more lobbyist special-interest and war profiteering, and an end to corporate welfare programs.

Every Progressive person loves America because it’s not just a reflection of who’s currently in power, but a tapestry of all perspectives that exist in America. Since the majority of American people have decided that the course we’ve been on for the past 6 (or 12 if you like) years are not the best course for America, we now have a differeent party in control.

God has blessed America! (If you don’t believe in God, I’m sure you’ll understand my exhuberance!)

  65. Juan C says:

Well, I know most here hate America and will just consider me a cheerleader, but here goes.

I think nobody here hates America. Thats a simplistic POV. I like America: From Chile to Alaska, I guess thats what you meant.

But, if you are not willing to concede that this is the greatest country on the planet, you’re misinformed or just denying the reality.
    Comment by paul

I think even when US was born, Franklin and Jefferson had in mind to spread the US so far as South America. First, the name: US of America. Why not just US or something else? Second, right after US got free from George III became the expansion over the indian countries. These really werent peaceful people. Then the spreading to the south to Florida, then the war against Mexico, then Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Okinawa, etc. I think you get my point. There is no doubt, when one looks over real history, that US was born as an empire. Now, if thats the greatest country in the world: the only country to bomb with nukes civilian population, that has a 180+ intervention record across the world, that has a shameful record supporting armed, bloodthirsty groups to repress democratic elected governments for US interests, that has over 700 military bases overseas from WWII (but the Nazis were defeated already) or earlier (Gitmo)…then I dont want to know which one is the worst country in the world.
Now, if you mean, how the people work, the look for improvements in all aspects of life, the huge support of universities, technology and science, your ONG´s, and the innocence of people…then yeah, US is a beautiful project as a country.

  66. paul says:

Thank you. I didn’t really doubt your love of country, I guess I just wanted to hear it. Juan C, I know we disagree about many things, but I really appreciate your posts. I came to TP to get a different take on things. Your perspective is especially helpful. Peace and Love.

  67. Bruce Gorton says:

It took just 1 Republican President, 1 bout of having a fair degree of power, for them to demonstrate just why the Republican Party is not to be trusted with government.

The Rightwhinge claims that the Republicans abandoned the principles which got them into power, that the Republicans acted more like what they call liberals then what they think of as being conservatives. This is nonsense. The Republicans were every bit as conservative as their supporters claimed they wanted them to be: They cut taxes, cut services and spent a lot of money on Arms. They refused to even talk to America’s “enemies” and alienated the UN. They made Christianity a big issue and even undermined teaching science when it conflicted with religious doctrine. Heck even minimum wage was kept low to help big business along.

The Republicans put into practice every principle the Right wanted, and those principles failed. This is because ultimately, when it comes to government effeciency, the left is the side that actually achieves it. Conservatives like to pretend that they are tough, but if you look throughout history the Conservatives are great right up until the situation changes, and then they cannot adapt.

The rightwing likes to point out that the left always talks about how things should be, and never about how things are. Well how things are is fairly obvious to anyone with eyes, and generally it is either fine, in which case its a boring topic of discussion, or not fine in which case it is more constructive thinking about how we would like them to be and how to achieve that “Should be” result.

How things should be in Iraq is America should be out of there. How things are, is that America is currently stuck in the same position as the Spartans were with Athens, you are trying to put in your own form of government and this is alienating everyone. America is losing the peace and right now it looks like it is trapped with a loss. How do we achieve the more desirable end? Get help, stop treating your allies like dirt and start talking to your enemies, and set a schedule which the Army can attain. This is what Rumsfeld refused to do, and what Gates is going to do, because ultimately now that the Left is in a position to force changes, the right is forced to take a more leftwing stance.

One of the chief Rightwing attacks against John Kerry was calling him a flip-flopper, and making a big deal about how George stood firm. Well look at what has happened under standing firm: America’s debt has doubled, North Korea has attained nuclear weaponry and Iran is now effectively untouchable. All because the Rightwing stood firm.

Now that the left has a voice, you will see changes there as Bush is forced to talk to your enemies in a more civil tone of voice, and you will see a more capable man chosen to talk to the UN then Bolton, whose efforts have achieved America not being invited to any serious talks. You will see more compromise and diplomacy.

What one must realise is that it was not just the scandals that killed the Republican Party this year, it was the pure fact that ultimately, the brand of conservatism the Republicans followed failed. Now things are changing, and hopefully they will be changing in time to avoid America hitting a depression or recession. The Democrats have a hard 2 years ahead of them, hopefully they will veer far enough left to change and adapt to those years, so that America gets the best government possible.

America has turned left, and the only reason why you still have the conservative American media calling America Rightwing, is because that media does not even know what the left really is.
