Perhaps he’s not running because it isn’t a real position in Congress.

UPDATE: More post-election confusion from Hotline On Call:

  2. Tom says:

So what if “Minority Speaker” isn’t a real position. FoxSnooze never lets pesky little things like facts get in their way when they’re reporting “the truth”.

    LOL

Looks like the day after the elections is National Buffoon Day. What else could explain Stuffed Sausage Hastert’s announcent, FoxSnooze’s usual crack reporting, Rums”failed” resigning and GDumbya showing his stoopid, ugly little mug on TV TWICE today?

  3. Theresa says:

I don’t think Denny can run, period. Maybe he can shuffle, or frog march, but run, nah.

  9. Pity The Fool says:

Look for an upcoming episode of the Surreal Life – DC, filmed at Denny’s DC condo. They won’t have to do much casting, either, as Denny, Scott Palmer and the DCOS already live under the same roof. Throw in unemployed DeLay, soon to be unemployed Mehlman and Katherine Harris and we’ve got a winner!

Yeah, they’ve been making a number of blunders like that lately — such as misidentifying Mark Foley as a Democrat! Of course, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that it wasn’t really a mistake…more like wishful thinking at best, or at worst a desperate attempt to mislead.

I think we can afford to be a little generous with the folks at Faux on this latest one, however — y’know, write this one off as an example of anterograde amnesia and give them a little time to let the reality of the situation really sink in so that they can grieve. The poor things must still be in shock, after all!

    What a Moron.
The position is called “Minority Leader” just ask Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi. I knew these guys would be good foe a few laughs today.

Let’s see how long Hannity, catalogue bride Melkin, Coultergeist and Laura “Ingrown” Ingraham will harp on this “Minority Spekaer” crap.

  23. hellinabucket says:

  27. jake3988 says:

You have a majority leader. And a minority leader. Didn’t think this was that hard for Fox News to grasp. But then again, they are Fox News.

  28. kelso says:

    That’s pretty funny.

It’s obvious that the folks over at Fox as well as some of our congressmen need a refresher course in Gov’t. 101.

  29. Jonathon says:

    “minority speaker”? HA HA HA!!!

Let’s hope that the GOP gets used to that “minority” idea. Let’s keep them there, permanently.

  30. Isis says:

Faux news doesn’t deserve to be on the air any longer. Like the GOP, they’re now quite “passe”…..ahahahahahahaha!

  31. Art says:

I guess old habits are hard to break.

  32. Isis says:

Boehner had better cut his losses and fade into the woodwork. He’s still looking pretty complicit with the Hastert debacle. The last thing he needs (like what occurred with his cohort DeLay) is to come boldly front and center and make himself not only a real target but a laughingstock as well.

  41. Marie says:

Fox news needs to justify their existence now. So they will continue to make things up, including a new seat in the House.
Facts never interfered in their reports in the past, so it is just business as usual for fact-free Fox TV.

  42. ForTruth says:

Funny, Paul is so stupid he thinks he can come here and tell us how to behave. That’s a knee slapper.

  43. ForTruth says:

It’s typical of Paul and like minded people. They never know when a limit has been reached, and continue to live in thier crazy little worlds.

  44. ForTruth says:

Good thing that Vice Cheif Justice position is open. And good thing Cheney is still president of the vice presidency. Condi will run for joint secretary of associate chief of staff. And when GWB is out sick, the substitute president of the west wing office of presidential affairs is still a Republican.

Phew, glad the GOP still has retained power.

Fox just wants all the dust-farters to hang on, and not have that anyerism before another election, so FOX “protects” thier well-being with fantasy.

  47. Democrat Soldier says:

    #37 – Paul,

I would like to think I would be as gracious as you were if the Democrats had lost their bid for majority status.

I agree, I hope that the Democrats give a better showing as majority party. We’ll just have to wait and see!

Please, come back and contrinute to the posts. If this place ever becomes an echo-chamber, we’ll be no better than “redstate.com” or other right-whiner sites! (well, with more class, but no better! ;-)

  49. Anais says:

  50. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Just wanted to share:

I got home from some Democratic candidates’ parties, too jacked up to sleep and immediately came to TP. I clicked on the thread about the “races to watch” which had about 175 comments posted by that time. I didn’t want to read them all, but wanted to see who was around and get a general flavor of the posts, so I quickly scanned. I’m glad I did it that way because it was phenomonal. I experienced it as if I was in a room with several people talking all at once in an excited manner, with me catching glimpses of the conversation. The exhilaration and expectation about the unfolding drama of the Democratic take-over was truly palpable. It was very comparable to being live with true comrades waiting in anticipation for results to come in. What a rush. Of course, not letting go of TP and TV until 3 is having its toll now!

  51. ForTruth says:

  54. Fredric L. Rice says:

    FOX “News” lost 24% viewers

Didn’t these traitors suffer a 24% reduction in the number of ignorant, unwashed, gullible, morons who still watch them?

  55. Krazny says:

I believe the proper term is Minority whip, and I am unsure how Boehner will run for majority speaker. I think there was a plan to make him majority speaker, if they republicans retained control. Boehner will have to wait for his chance, which will most likely be in about 10 to 12 years if history is any indicator.

  56. Bercebu says:

Guess that make John Kerry minority president.

  57. RUCerious says:

I think a better proposal is to create a spinority meaker. It makes a lot more sense, and is better suited to the party of fear and smear which had its chance to effectively govern, and lost the consent of the governed.

  60. MLF says:

Hi, Sharon…the winner was Jerry McNerney. If you go to SFGate.com and type in Pombo in the search it will bring up the info. It’s great to get rid of him. I’m not a super environmental person, but Pombo was way too extreme as we probably agree.

  61. Gregor Samsa says:

    Who won his seat.?

    McNerney won Pombo’s seat.

Excuse me?!? After being forced to put up with five-odd years of these kinds of comments from people like you? No, I don’t think so! What goes around, comes around — that’s one of the reasons why they always tell you to be nice to the people you meet on the way up, because they’re the same people you’re gonna meet on the way back down. As far as I’m concerned, people like you are just getting a taste of your own medicine. If you don’t like it — if people like you can’t take what you were so willing (nay, eager) to dish out — that’s just too damn bad.

  64. Bluedog49 says:

Very gracious in defeat, Paul. Thank you very much. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed in Pelosi. Implimenting the 9-11 Commission suggestions, lowering the interest rates on college loans, beefing up veterans’ benefits, re-introducing stem cell funding, etc. Sounds like a popular agenda to me.

Exactly! My opinion is that that kind of arguments of inflamed patriotism like paul´s is useless. Samoans may think their country is the best in the world for whatever reason they think of. Now, the greatest love I can imagine for my own country (Argentina) is based on social justice, equal chances for everybody, welfare, health care, investment on education, science and technology, etc. But that love shouldnt stop there, it should be directed towards every country. Would I be happy if my country is OK, while bangladesh kids are dying of hunger? I would be sick if that was the case. BTW, Argentina is FULL of beautiful women.

  91. leaves says:

there is such thing as a minority speaker.

The House Minority Leader serves as the minority party’s counterpart to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. A representative is elected to the post by the minority party caucus or conference at organizational meetings prior to the start of a new Congress. The Minority Leader speaks for the minority party and its policies, strives to protect the minority’s rights, and devises parliamentary strategies and tactics for maximizing the influence of the minority party on legislative outcomes. In addition, the Minority Leader chairs the party’s committee assignment panel, and similar to the Speaker, serves as a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Traditionally, the Minority Leader does not lead floor debate on major measures. The current House Minority Leader is Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). [4]

There is a house “minority leader” but Fox is clearly oh-so-self conscious about this defeat that they actually make up a new position.

  97. paul says:

#94. Juan C. I have been to Buenos Aires, it is beautiful. And there is no debate about the women in Argentina. But, I believe, that what you see as inflamed patriotism is just a reaction to the drumbeat of anti-American sentiment coming from many here. If we were on a site that discussed Argentinian politics, and almost everything posted was about how corrupt the country’s leadership was, how evil it’s corporations were, how terrible its economy was, how ignorant half its population was, how terribly it effected the rest of the world, etc; I believe you may from time to time react to defend the country you love.

  98. loretta says:

FOX “news” (if that’s what you want to call it) still won’t “get it”. I was waiting for the 1PM press conference yesterday when the announcement was made about Rumsfeld–and quickly flipped around to all of the news channels to get their “take”. NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC & CBS all reporting the Rumsfeld story, and covering the press conference. Guess what FOX was doing? Whining about voting machines, problems at the polls, etc. They didn’t run any of the press conference as it was happening, having likely already receiving the bad news, and choosing to keep their viewers uninformed…..typical.

  99. francais says:

Minority Speaker is interchangeable with Minority Leader since it is the counterpart to the House Speaker position. I wouldn’t make fun of Fox on News on this uless you are absolutely sure you are correct and you were not so you look stupid.

No, francais, it’s NOT interchangeable. And you are a buffoon. You’re also a good little acolyte, defending them no matter what stupidity they put forth. It’s nitwits like you, agreeing with rightwing fools no matter what horsecrap they dish out, who put this country so far down the toilet in six interminable years.

Hi Paul. I would like to echo Democratic solidier’s comment regarding your gracious words and am a bit disturbed to see some of the replies you have received from others. I’m very much hoping that we of the liberal majority can begin immediately to show how much we are not like the conservative minority and try to hold our crowing to a minimum. After all, the Democrats now have Congress, but haven’t actually done anything yet. My mood has gone from gleeful celebration to cautious optimism. And we have to remember that there is another election in two years which could again change everything. (god, I hope not)

  107. Richelle says:

To IHL, francais and others: What convenient logic. How interesting that Fox News never once referred to Nancy Pelosi as the minority speaker in previous years. They are obviously grasping to comfort their ultra-right, ignorant, deluded, GWB-worshipping viewers.

  108. magikpowerwoman says:

I haven’t heard anything from the dems about rolling back the Military Commissions Act (so habeus corpus can live again), or taking away all the powers the prez has decided he above all others has. I mean yes, minimum wage is important but the constitution is much, much more important to us all. Are they too afraid to talk about it? And in all the news coverage of the election no one (not press or candidates) talked about the attack on the constitution. I am breathing again after six years, feeling some ease but also not quite trusting that the dems will do the most important work.

I wonder what issues are of concern in the State of Denial…

    But…we knew that, didn’t we?

#93 and 113. WisePiper and Richelle and Democrat Soldier. Thanks for adding some reason to the noise, you’re the bomb. My mind is open. If I saw a change in the tone and conditions improving, I would admit it, applaud it and jump on board. I am an American first and a Republican second. I am confident politics will evolve to a more civil place, maybe now is the time and Democrats can lead the way.

Man, oh, man! It justs keep gettin’ better and better every day. I am surprised the Aruba story is not back on Faux News. Anything to shield the mindless cult followers from the news that once again: America has a Democracy.

We can just use their own words: Don’t like it, leave the country.

  116. anonymous says:

There is no such thing as a “Minority Speaker”, as many have already pointed out. There is a Speaker of the House (currently Hastert), there is a Majority Leader (Boehner), Minority Leader (Pelosi), Majority Whip (Blunt), Minority Whip (Hoyer). There is a President Pro Tempore of the Senate (Stevens), Majority Leader (Frist), Majority Whip (McConnell), Minority Leader (Reid), and Minority Whip (Durbin). The specious argument that the Minority Leader “speaks” for the minority means nothing; there are official titles for the leadership in Congress, and Minority Speaker is not, has never been, and will never be one of them.

115: You’re expecting Congress to talk about the issues substantively when the elections aren’t over yet? How fast do you think they work?

Paul wrote: “#94.

Paul, if everyone in my country was talking about how corrupt the government was, and actually had the proof… If everyone talked about the brazenness and arrogance of its leadership, and the leaders really were that bad… If half the population thinks that a trained monkey can assume the mantle of leadership despite being unable to speak, read, or write at a high-school level… If my country imbalanced the entire world’s geopolitical atmosphere for the sake of oil and their dead god… I wouldn’t be angry at the people saying it, Paul. I’d be angry at the people DOING it – the people actually perpetrating the crimes, not just the ones crying foul. In fact, Paul, if my country were that bad, I’d be thinking seriously about revolution. Fortunately, my country isn’t that bad anymore. This week, the corruption level of our government just went down a notch. We just got rid of the Republican majority here in the US – isn’t that great? Now, it’s awfully easy to throw back all those same snide, rude, arrogant comments that we’ve been pelted with for the past six years as the right wing rose to power and then imploded under the weight of its own malevolence. So easy that a lot of people – like, millions – will gladly do so, so you might want to get ready for that, Paul.

  118. paul says:

DarqueWing. I support the new leadership. I believe in the system. I’m happy for you that you believe this change will make things better. I hope they will. I will prepare for this incredible implosion. Here’s something you should prepare for. Having you leaders make decisions that are equally unpopular, and then, having noone to blame.

  119. DarqueWing says:

Paul – I don’t know that this will make anything much better. I’m no Democrat. I was forced, thanks to this useless two-party system, to vote Democrat in order to force out the outrageously corrupt Republican Party. Will the Democrats be better? Probably. For a little while, and then they’ll be just as corrupt after a few more years. This moronic cycle keeps our country in thrall while truly important decisions are ignored. My leaders? No, Paul, just the lesser of the two evils that the two-party system requires me to choose. My leaders would be the ones that would spend their careers hunting to extinction the party system in general, so that government can finally proceed with what it was supposed to do – represent the people, instead of itself. So, being that independent, I must sit back, wait, and hope that the equilibrium stays in a sweet spot, where the parties are so hopelessly deadlocked that neither one can pursue their dreams – whether it be the Republicans’ corrupt world domination, or the Democrats’ insatiable appetite for taxes. Don’t mistake me for a partisan hack, Paul. I’m exactly what James Madison had in mind when he told George Clinton, before the Constitution was ratified, that there were too many viewpoints in such a large republic for any political faction to gain too much power. Turns out George Clinton was absolutely right – even more than two centuries later, we’re still just as susceptible to the mob mentality that political parties use to manipulate voters. Being inundated with the pervasive message that we must choose one side or the other is not just a logical fallacy, but the most insidious kind of political forgery. As long as this deception continues, and as long as people are consistently distracted, ignorant, or apathetic enough to fall for it, the best that I can hope for is a divided government, one that is shackled by its own clash of party affiliation that it is rendered powerless. THAT is what I voted for, Paul, and that’s what I got.

I’d post the errors in on-screen graphics on Olbermann’s show on MSNBC, but nobody watches it anyway. Do you guys really think it’s a big deal that some intern/producer idiot made a mistake with the on-screen graphic? If you do, I suggest that you find a more productive way to spend your time.

Open Border Chairman Martinez to lead GOP?

The GOP base was sent a shock wave by picking a pro-amnesty Mel Martinez as the Republican Party Chairman. It seems clear now, that President Bush will push his open border agenda with the help of Nancy Pelosi lead Congress. Mel Martinez job will be to control GOP Party decent from Congress, with the promise of new Hispanic voters.

    Palm Beach Post

Signaling a new direction for the Republican Party, which had heavy losses in the Hispanic community in last week’s elections, Florida Sen. Mel Martinez appeared ready Monday to become the party’s new general chairman while retaining his Senate seat.

Martinez thrust himself into the contentious debate over immigration, helping craft the Senate version of a comprehensive immigration bill that would offer a route to eventual citizenship for longtime illegal residents while requiring others to leave the U.S.

Michele Waslin, director of immigration policy at the National Council of La Raza, is hopeful Martinez and his GOP allies will make the right moves.

Is the GOP selling-out the Base with pushing an open border agenda? Does anyone think that the GOP lost the election due to the immigration issue?
