Progressive candidates won decisively across the country yesterday, and with their victories came some historic firsts for the U.S. government. A round-up:
– Nancy Pelosi will be the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and the third highest official after president and vice-president. [Link]
– Pelosi will also be the first Italian-American elected as House Speaker.
– For the first time, three African-Americans — Charlie Rangel (D-NY), John Conyers (D-MI), and Bennie Thompson (D-MS) — are expected to serve simultaneously as House committee chairmen. [Link]
– Keith Ellison (D-MN), elected to the House yesterday, will become the first Muslim to serve in Congress. [Link]
– With Claire McCaskill’s (D) Senate victory in Missouri, a record number of women (
1516) will now serve in the U.S. Senate. [Link]– Governor-elect Deval Patrick (D-MA) became the first black governor elected in Massachussetts and the second African-American elected governor in the nation. [Link]

To everyone who asked last week, “Where in the world is Nancy Pelosi?”
Feel that boot up your ass? Ah, there she is.

November 8th, 2006 at 12:16 pmSubpoenas, investigations, and that’s just the beginning.
Let us begin by waterboarding the big Dick.

I like it. I was going to post a smart comment as well, but I bow to your wit sir.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:17 pmPelosi = The Godmother, capo di tutti capi.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:17 pmNICE! Some progressive break throughs despite the Allens and Porkers.
America prevails all around…
Now if we can keep Bushs finger off the Diebold button in VA
November 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pmYou know the one thing that scares Repub’s more than Speaker Nancy Pelosi? President Nancy Pelosi.
Hee hee hee.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pmThe message out of this is:
Remember Nov. 2006, before you decide to invade a country.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pmI love women, I love women serving in the Senate.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pmTo quote the memorable Jackie Gleason, “How sweet it is.”
November 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pmThe Democrats should be no eager to “go after” Pres. Bush than the Republicans were eager to “go after” Pres. Clinton!
(There, THAT ought to shut up the right-whiners before they get started!)
We should investigate why no-bid contracts overwhelmingly favored pro-Republican companies? In cases where there is proof of wrongdoing, fine the companies to the point they only break even on investments. That would be a great way to “punish” them.
We should also re-instate the oversight committees for Iraq reconstruction. Can’t have too much oversight!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:21 pmThird in line to the presidency — no wonder the right was scared of a Democratic majority. All it takes is a couple of impeachments and you’ve got President Pelosi. Not that I think we should impeach them at this point. Might hurt our chances in ‘08. I’ll be happy with hearings and subpeonas at this point. Get ‘em to testify under oath, and arrest them if possible if they refuse (as Cheney said he would).
November 8th, 2006 at 12:22 pmYou forgot the first time Islamic Fascists have had their viewpoint fully represented in the majority of a branch of the U.S. government.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:22 pmCongratulations to the Democrats, but the one dirty fly in the ointment is Joe Lieberman the Trojan Horse Republican agent who loves George Bush. He is now the spoiler in the Senate and could become a de-facto Republican to keep GOP control of the Senate. Democrats made a big mistake by not taking out old Joe, so CT voters get the raspberry award!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:24 pmWhat a difference a day makes.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:24 pmAlso,
I’m all for waterboarding Dick Cheney. (f**k that guy)
We do need to investigate serious corruption cases. But It would be a mistake to turn it into mudslinging.
However
We have been given a chance to do some good things, and pass some meaningful legislation!
Lets do that instead, so we can prove to America that we are the party to choose in 2008.

There we go, as predicted, kind of late though. You better ammo-up so the Muslims don’t come and get you.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:26 pmWeak sauce. You are gonna have to do better than that bud. America just kicked your sorry attacks to the curb. Have fun rolling around in the muck.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:27 pm12 - Storms - u r funny. Get over it, and quit repeating those tired old lies - obviously, no one believes them.

Not a half bad idea! I like it.
It makes no sense to leave criminals in power where they can do yet more damage to the republic. ITMFA!!!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:28 pm#13 Proving that Democrats have no ideas. Joe Lieberman breaks with the Dems on only one issue and they throw him completely overboard.
Anti-War sentiment might have won the election, but when the American people see Dems have no ideas beyond opposing the war, other than to raise our taxes & push for socialist policies, they will wake up and usher in an even bigger Republican majority & President in 08.
Please put Hillary on the ticket! Actually, even better would be a Clinton/Pelosi combo.

Well the guy did have ties to CAIR and NOI, that should be frightening to everybody. To me it’s comparable to electing a former KKK member into the congress.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:31 pm# 18 Come on, can’t I come out with crazy, outlandish accusations for at least one day. Ya’ll have been in this position for 12 years and you made comments like mine constantly. Just give me a few more hours.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:32 pmWhat, we still have doorknobs spewing talking points that have been fully rebuked by the general public, oh the shame.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:33 pmWe’re moving out of the stone-age, finally.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:33 pmNope, this is our party. Come back tomorrow.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:35 pmFollowing the example given us by the Rethugs in 2000, it’s time to declare victory for Tester and Webb. They won. We won. Anyone who says otherwise is a crybaby and a sore loser.

“Mr. Cheney, now that the Democrats control the House and investigations into the administration are all but guaranteed, do you still stand by your previous comment?”

Fear is all ReichWingNuts have, even after election day. Amazing. One would think they would get tired of dancing to the same tune.
Try this, “Storms” and see how misdirected your fear is:
- 3,000 Americans died on 9/11… and since that fateful day…
- 150,000 Americans died from gunshot wounds RIGHT HERE on American soil!
- 200,000 Americans from automobile accidents.
ReichWingNuts have been in unfettered power for 6 years. WingNuts tried to make people frightened of Saddam (who had NOTHING to do with 9/11). WingNuts had the responsibility to protect Americans. Yet our sons and daughters are dying in a place that is creating more “terrorists” after our occupation than Osama was every able to recruit from his caves in Afghanistan.
It was easy for Emperor Bush to declare a War on “Terror”. But where is the War on HandGuns? Where is the War on Automobiles?
Tell me; what, exactly, is “acceptible” risk?
November 8th, 2006 at 12:37 pmNot that I think we should impeach them at this point. Might hurt our chances in ‘08. I’ll be happy with hearings and subpeonas at this point. Get ‘em to testify under oath, and arrest them if possible if they refuse (as Cheney said he would).

If investigations find that Bush and Cheney have broken the law, they have a Constitutional obligation to impeach. These are not the crime enabling repugs that were given power last night.

Whatever.
And Republicans incorporating video clips provided by Osama himself in their political ads mean nothing, right?
Go away. You lost. Deal with it.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:41 pmI congratulate all the voters in every state, except CT who re-elected the GOP agent Joe Liberman, so good work Americans, but CT voters go wear your dunce hats today and shame on those who voted for Lieberman!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:42 pmSo America actually has a conscience. Lucky us, we may just be able to save ourselves from the global hate that is proliferating against us.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:44 pmThis will, without a doubt, be the most watched Congress EVAH!
The Dems have been handed the keys, and while I’m excited about where they will take us, they will have to be doubly sure they do a damn fine job.
Stamp out corruption wherever they find it.
Help ensure economic success for all Americans, not just the rich.
Solve the health care crisis.
Come up with and carry out a plan to stop terrorism without sinking to the terrorists’ level, all the while still keeping us safe. (Some ideas: shore up borders in a fair manner; tighten port security; invest more in intelligence agencies).
Regain our standing in the world.
If they instead spend all their time doing investigations and ignoring real issues, all they’ll do is divide our country even further. Yes, some investigations are absolutely necssary. But witch hunts are not.
I could keep going, but they can do those things, we can get our country back.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:45 pmhey bush: We, the American voters, are THE DECIDERS - NOW!!!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:45 pmWe, the American voters, are THE DECIDERS - NOW!!!
Actually, as of the polls closing, we stopped being the deciders for roughly anouther 2 years, so now the politicians will do whatever they want for a year, then start ‘listening’ to us again for the next round of elections in ‘08.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:48 pmHe is now the spoiler in the Senate and could become a de-facto Republican to keep GOP control of the Senate.
Proving the “no ideas” charge. Lieberman votes with Republicans on one issue and Dems throw him overboard immediately.
There’s no evidence other than Joe’s disdain for several of his former friends that would suggest he would vote with Republicans to help them keep control of the Senate.
Dems won because of anti-sentiment toward the war, but when Americans realize what we are really going to get - back to high taxes, back to socialist legislation - there will be a hugh “holy crap” resounding around the largely conservative country.
Have your fun for 2 years & please, please, please give us a Clinton/Pelosi ticket in 08.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:49 pmRummy to step down - there’s the “significant announcement” referred to in another thread today.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:51 pmIt just goes to show you which party really DOES represent America. To all the liberal bashers out there, this is what progress really means and what liberal policies bring about. A more equal and fair and properly represented country.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:53 pmI congratulate all the voters in every state, except CT who re-elected the GOP agent Joe Liberman, so good work Americans, but CT voters go wear your dunce hats today and shame on those who voted for Lieberman!
Proving that the Dems are no bigger than plans for our country than to pull out of the war. Lieberman has an extremely liberal record and only one “conservative” position, and he’s completely thrown overboard.
The American people are going to come to their senses when they see their taxes raised and medicine socialized, and we’ll all hear a resounding sound of “holy crap” from a largely conservative country.
Please give us a Clinton/Pelosi ticket in 08!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:53 pmBoth Jon Tester and Jim Webb have won their races in Montana and Virginia but want to make sure that every vote is counted. We expect to have official results soon but can happily declare today that Democrats have taken the majority in the U.S. Senate.
Montana Vote Situation: Jon Tester leads Conrad Burns by approximately 1,700 votes (as of 11am EDT) and counting. In Silver Bow County (Butte), a Democratic stronghold, votes are still being counted but Tester is winning there with 66% of the vote. We expect to gain the majority of these uncounted votes and to add to Tester’s margin.
Montana Process: When the counting phase is completed, a canvass will verify the vote tallies. That process could take as long as 48 hours, and must begin within three days and end within seven. Unless the canvass shows the margin to be within ¼ of 1%, there is no recount. As the loser, Burns would have to request the recount. When the votes are all counted, we expect to be outside that recount margin.
Virginia Vote Situation: Jim Webb is up by approximately 8,000 votes and once the provisional ballots are counted, we expect Webb’s margin to increase. (Please note that VA absentees were included in the tallies from last night.)
Virginia Process: A canvass is underway to verify the results and we expect that process to finish within a day or so. To be in recount, the margin needs to be less than 1% and Allen (as the loser) would have to request it. Because of Virginia voting laws, the margin would have to be much tighter than it currently is to see any change in the outcome. Given the current margins, that is highly, highly unlikely.
November 8th, 2006 at 1:02 pmIt’s a great day for our system and most of our people. People are going to get to know Nancy Pelosi. She’s a great woman. She’s much more of a moderate and consensus builder than people realize. She’s also no-nonsense. Believe me, if someone came to her with info that a congressperson was hitting on pages, the last thing she would do is look the other way. And, she’s a much better supporter of the troops than Hastert and his people.
I’m happy that I was wrong about a few things. They didn’t set up another Tonkin with Iran. There wasn’t widespread strange computer-based results which defied exit polls. And, some of the conservatives on this board are being as big as they can be about the results. Great!
November 8th, 2006 at 1:07 pmAnother first — a major medical breakthrough: “Bush’s Brain†meltdown. Karl who?
November 8th, 2006 at 1:19 pmWord up Mighty, how’s it shakin’?
November 8th, 2006 at 1:37 pmAfter a long night, it looks good for the good guys here in Virginia — it appears that Webb is going to take Sen.-unelect Macaca’s seat. And we Virginians are enjoying our 15 minutes (or days, if Allen and his cronies persist in their delusions of victory) of fame…
Here’s one Virginia lawyer whose faith has been restored (to some extent) in my fellow Virginians. And I’ll be working today and in the coming days helping monitor the canvassing and likely recount, to ensure that the repukes don’t pull any of the crap they’ve pulled over the last 6 years…
Sen. Webb and democratic Senate, here we come!!!
November 8th, 2006 at 1:47 pmCongrats democrats, one out of four good job.
It’s hard to hear myself think over the sounds of the terrorists patting themselves on the back.
November 8th, 2006 at 2:05 pmZippy, LOL you guys lost fair and square in 2000, 2002, and 2004. why is it that when republicans win there must be some conspiracy afoot but when the democrats win, that talk goes away? even when you win you can’t stop whining.
Pathetic
Let’s see how their tax hikes, cut and run, meaningless subpoenas and hearings fair for them in 08.
November 8th, 2006 at 2:09 pmThat’s really hard to believe.
Well, didn’t they have a few black governors during Reconstruction or something?
November 8th, 2006 at 2:11 pmBluedog, conservatives don’t whine and make allegations of voter disenfranchisement when they lose like the democrats have done in the past. The GOP lost because they acted too much like democrats with their spending and their attempt to fight another politically correct war.
Pelosi claims they will be the most open, honest, congress in history. Well, their history in power suggests otherwise. In a few weeks we will see just what the democrats consider to be important. They will push for more taxes, higher minimum wages, a weak immigration policy, repeal of the Patriot Act and all the other programs dealing with spying on terrorists.
Bin Laden is smiling like a cheshire cat.

TD: keep spewing your bile, pal…it looks good coming from a LOSER like you. That’s right — I said LOSER — get used to the title, it’ll be yours for at least the next two years. In fact, you may want to have tee-shirts made so you stand out in the crowd — that is, if the nazi salute doesn’t do it for you.
Oh, and by the way, the American people called: they want their country back. And we’re going to help them get it back from the enablers of fascism like you who’ve held it hostage for the last 6 years.
November 8th, 2006 at 2:33 pmTD: how do YOU know what Bin Laden’s doing? Did you meet with him this morning?
Why do you guys hate America so much that you’d harbor a terrorist like that?
November 8th, 2006 at 2:34 pmTruthDetector(?) - it’ll prolly be as ugly as the years and millions we wasted on a blue dress a blowjob and a cumstain. Your “stuff” has no weight, coming, as it does, from the bottom of the ethical barrel. Lie there in the slime now, and GET OVER IT. (btw, bud, it took 50 years for the dems to lose congress, and it took the thugs 12. why?, cause they suck and their policies produce failure)
U trolls are precious - thanks for coming back, and I look forward to the next few months, while your carcasses roast slowly over a low hick’ry fire….makes the meat just fall right off the bone, dontcha know?

November 8th, 2006 at 2:46 pmYay!
The WASP chauvanistic male pig is truly getting tempered by the diversity upon which this nation was built!
What an incredible, incredible victory today!
November 8th, 2006 at 2:50 pmI have to offer congratulations to the Democrats. This was an important election, and they won it decisively. There is no question that the voters, both liberal and conservative, collectively took the GOP to the woodshed yesterday.
Will the Dems overplay their newly strengthened hand? Almost inevitably they will, unless they learn to stop balkanizing the electorate as Nico has done above. Voters care about issues, not the race, religion or sex (or even the sexual preference) of the candidates. If the Dems demonstrate a mastery of the issues most important to Americans, they may retain power for a long time. If not, they too will get taken to the woodshed.
My most fervent hope is that America will continue to stand strong against the terrorists around the world, including those in Iraq. If we don’t, there almost certainly will come a day when, like on 9-11, we will again be counting bodies in the thousands, rather than votes.
Congratulations Democrats. You have won the power that comes with winning an important election. Now please use that power wisely.

November 8th, 2006 at 5:09 pmSave it, Citizen Dad. Most will not forget your previous “contributions†to these discussions.
Well, isn’t that special?
My contributions, such as they are, have been opinions as worthy of consideration as any others. I don’t apologize. I let the chips fall where they may . . . and I try to be a good loser, when the situation requires it.
Seachange elections, such as this one, always require the honest acceptance of defeat. They also present a challenge to the victors: to be gracious winners (or at least to appear to be gracious), or not to be. Showing too much contempt is an ugly sight to most of those who cast their votes yesterday.
November 8th, 2006 at 5:38 pmso, Dad, you admit that you’re “cutting and running” from your previous positions, or are you “flip-flopping”, because only one of those two things is possible, right? i mean nothing ugly about it, and i called you no names. i just expect you to stick to your guns, or drop them once and for all.
November 8th, 2006 at 6:13 pmso, Dad, you admit that you’re “cutting and running†from your previous positions, or are you “flip-floppingâ€, because only one of those two things is possible, right?
I’m not sure I follow you, tb, but I haven’t changed my principles or my opinions. I can concede electoral defeat without conceding either principles or opinions (after all, there will be another election in just two short years).
One of my principles is not to be a sore loser if I can help it. The way I was raised, that’s one of the worst things you can be in life. That, and being a poor winner. Let’s hope we don’t see either in the next two years.
November 8th, 2006 at 6:40 pmCitizen Dad, I have a question.. what of the bodies we counted with Malvo and McVey from our own ranks?.. or what of the innocents that die men women and children in other countries.. lest we may become terrorists of others.

November 9th, 2006 at 9:48 amTom,
We have already had investigations into the intel that led to the Iraq war. The 9/11 commission that YOUR side demanded be put toghether concluded that nobody lied about the intel. For that to have occurred Bush would have had to get intel agencies from several different nations and the UN to lie.
The Clinton investigation could have come to a screeching halt if Clinton had simply told the truth. He lied about his activities, tried to get others to lie for him and was found in contempt of court for his lies. Your side apparently wants to hold the president of the united states to a lower standard than a beat cop as long as he’s a democrat. Pelosi says she wants to work with Bush. She was calling him every name in the book about a week ago.
What policies have the democrats come up with in the last 12 years Tom? Why did your side lose power in 1994? If the democrats were doing such a great job, why did the GOP pick up over 50 seats in the house in 1994?. I notice the name calling, well that’s all your side has done for the last 6 years while Bush and the GOP gave us a great economy and cut the defecit in half 3 years ahead of schedule.
We have already seen the tip of the iceberg on their agenda. Raising the minimum wage, raising taxes, a tax on the oil industry to help pay for research in alternative fuels? So, apparently the democrats are in favor of telling business owners how much they should pay their employees regardless of merit, & they are in favor of forcing an industry to pay to help put itself out of business. Don’t we have more important things to worry about? Weren’t the democrats bitching about Bin Laden still being out there?
Your side won 1 election out of the last 4 and now you have the next two years to “work together” in a “bypartisan way”. Where was this spirit of bypartisanship on the part of democrats for the last 6 years? All the dems did was hurl insults and vote against the very tools that have prevented further attacks on US soil for 5 years and refused to even vote on several judicial nominations and the embassador to the UN.
The democrats did everything they could to undermine the President and now they say they want to work WITH him? What utter nonsense. Your side accused him of lying, being a murderer, a terrorist, a torturer, incompetant, compared Us troops to nazis, compared Gitmo to a gulag, and now want to work in the spirit of bypartisanship? Please
November 9th, 2006 at 1:27 pmLOL, you libs are really something. Every election over the past 6 years you guys were saying the dems were gonna come in and kick ass, you guys predicted in 2000, 02, and 04, that the democrats would win. When they didn’t you guys whined, called for recounts with no clear rules, accused GOP operatives of a conspiracy to disenfranchise minority voters etc. It’s never about YOUR policies when you lose, it’s always a GOP conspiracy. If the conspiracy theory were true, why didn’t it work this time?
Your side was better at the mudslinging. Bravo. Now that they have the power, let’s see what they do with it.
November 9th, 2006 at 1:39 pm“Untruthdetector”,
You asked why did our side (Democrats) lose power in 1994? I’ll tell you my fellow ‘unAmerican’, Corporate America backed up the GOP candidates with ‘dirty-traitor’ money reaped from the wonderful ‘get rich quick’ global economy scam…where truly the ‘rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.’As for Reagan (who most Repubs want to canonize), his rise to power was also done ‘under the table’. A little weapons trading with Iran…hostages home…Reagan takes office. I wasn’t born yesterday!
As far as liberals/Democrats name calling, we learned it from the worst! Ex-drugee Limbaugh and his ilk mastered the skill of dehumanizing ‘the other side’ as well as taking shots at those who want to improve the ‘human condition’ by using stem cell research.
Just remember this! The American people are the DECIDERS, not GW, Cheney, nor the so-called billion dollar international families that supposedly decide our fate…the French knew who to go after when the shit hit the fan during the Revolution…the rich and powerful!!!
November 11th, 2006 at 5:50 pm“Truth” detector you said..
but forget the rationale for the 3 branches of government in the 1st place. You dont “rubber stamp” things that are wrong just for the sake of “biparticianship”.. when you are not in power and all 3 branches are skewed.. there is no bi-particianship because ( as they proved) they (the previous government) did not need any and just did what they wanted.. fot the sake of being “more safe” pulleeeese!
people who previously i this country that fought against blantantly wrong polices were know by names as abolitionists, revolutionaries, and other names.. were they wrong for opposing?
You sound to have a hint of dissapointment.. like a realiziation that you are very singular in your thoughts and most dont agree with you and it has been played out on a major scale (like the last person picked in the school yard).
the government is doing what it is supposed to CHECK and BALANCE itself.. but why is the present government still trying to bypass government ( Bolton and spy tapping legislation) *smiling*…
Some people find a way to blame the victim to hide their own sense of discovery…. that things are not as they thought.
Just take a deep breathe.. read a book like “The prophet” and just rethink your stances.
peace “Truth”
