A “broad charm offensive by White House officials is unlikely,” Time magazine’s Mike Allen reports. “They’re not in the mood for it, and they don’t think it would work,” said one close adviser.
“Democratic victories yesterday in the House and Senate appear likely to boost efforts to strengthen U.S. global warming policy,” E&E writes. In the House, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) “is poised to direct climate and air pollution policy as chairman of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee.” He is expected to hold a series of hearings on global warming specifically, as well as direct oversight of U.S. EPA’s most controversial air emission regulations.
The campaigns of Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R-MD) and U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele (R-MD) chartered at least six buses to carry mostly poor, black homeless men “from as far as Philadelphia to hand out inaccurate voter guides in Baltimore and Prince George’s County yesterday” as part of an effort to woo black voters. Ehrlich defended the practice, saying: “If folks are here from out of town, that’s fine with me.”
60 percent. Number of voters who said the war in Iraq has “hurt the long-term security of the United States.” More than half said they supported the withdrawal of some U.S. troops from Iraq.
“In a number of states, including California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah, voters reported that electronic voting machines were not working properly. Among the errors were voting machines not turning on, failing to scan the ballots, and software that failed to function properly.”
And finally: “Drunken pirate” James Hill didn’t make his opponents “walk the plank,” but he did manage to plunder almost 2,000 votes in Iowa’s 1st congressional district race. Hill ran as an independent under the “Pirate Party” mantle.
Thank God Almighty, we're free from Federal Republican Hegemony!

November 8th, 2006 at 11:31 amDear Progs - Mr. Aphrodite and I were at the Schwarzeneggar Victory celebration last night so please allow me to offer my heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to Dems everywhere. I applaud Dem leaders on the selection of moderate and conservative Dems to run against Republicans.
Your victory in the House was needed so wayward Repubs could be slapped back to the foundation and principles of the Republican Party - ala Ronald Reagan. The corruption and sex scandals were no conspiracy or entrapment - these horrible behaviours were CHOSEN by people intoxicated with power and they deserved to lose. I am pleased that members of my Party see fit to kick perverts and crooks to the curb - I only wish Dems had the same integrity.

November 8th, 2006 at 11:38 amThere is hope for this formerly great nation.
Now, we ALL need to write/call/FAX our CongressCritters. In addition to the fine 100 day agenda the DEMS have laid out, I think it wise that ALL of us remind them the job isn’t done. I want the Bush Cabal investigated for misleadership -
- Failing to keep America safe from the events of 9/11
- Diverting funding from the hunt for Osama to planning for Iraq ($100M+)
- Lying to America so they could have their way with Iraq (WMD, Yellow Cake, etc)
- Failing to secure Iraq in any meaningful way, thus leading to the deaths of between 450,000 and 700,000 innocent civilians
- Failing to provide aid to victims of Katrina
- Breaking the law (FISA) to illegally spy on Americans
The job is NOT done while criminals run free. ITMFA!!!

what economy? the only economy that is surging are those involved with iraq. halliburton, carlyle, makers of military equipment. the heartland of america is suffering. that is the middle class.
higher taxes damn right for the rich. watch out all the rich, greedy, selfish bustards your finally going to pay your taxes instead of getting tax cuts.
unemployment will be no more. maybe our midwestern friends will finally get jobs after bushwhack sourced theres over seas.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:42 amFolks who work for a living and those who own their homes will be hurt most. Their taxes will go up, the economy will slow down, and many will lose their jobs. This will cause a cascade down in home values like we saw in the 90's under Bill Clinton after he raised taxes. Also bad news for government workers as slowdown in tax receipts will mean fewer raises at the bargaining table.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:43 amHow do I join the Pirate Party?
November 8th, 2006 at 11:44 am#3 - LCmdr. Aphrodite, I'm glad that you're able to overcome bitterness and refrain from vituperation and extend a hand of conciliation.
While I understand that you still feel that the Republicans are the better party, their past performance with climbing debt, run-away spending, rubber-stamp policies, pro-big-federal government tendencies and refusal to take personal responsibility we’re the major reasons they lost the majority.
Now, it is up to Democrats to lead for the next 2 years (at least) and show if they’ve learned anything from being in the minority for 12 years.
While I can understand your seeming bitterness towards the Democratic party, I hope that you can overcome it and look towards the future and not dwell on the past.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:44 amI'm wondering if W has the gonads to "do a Schwarzenegger" and move to the left now in order to save his failed Presidency. I'm assuming he's too arrogant to do so. But for the good of the country, and his "legacy", he should.

Song: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye Lyrics
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
He'll never love you, the way that I love you
'Cause if he did, no no, he wouldn't make you cry
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. Wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, now
Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Listen to me now
He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin' baby from your eyes
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. I wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, na-na na-na-na na na
Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

November 8th, 2006 at 11:49 amThe goverment has been growing under a pretty good rate under Bush, with many new regulations not to mention record deficits.
Bush has mainly paid for his little war, that WAS supposed to pay for itself, thru emergency expenditures!
You gripe about money paid to taxes what about the 8 billion the bush CPA lost in Iraq? Who do you think will pay for that? Me and You.
What about borrowin money from China for war? Is that Fiscally responsible? You see hpw the GOP donut holed medicare. You think they wouldn't screw people on SS?
Right.

Mom and Pop went out of business long ago when Walmart moved in. Also, while we are on the subject, death duties only come in at $2 Million. Of course your basic dishonesty is nothing new, its what lost you Congress.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:51 am#19 - You're swallowing the talking-points too quickly without doing your homework!
How many people actually fall victim to the inheritance tax? Less than 1%. Only family trusts greater than 1 million are even covered by the inheritance tax . No single family farm or business had to be sold to pay off the inheritance tax despite the lies.
Wake up and think for yourself, don’t just swallow the kool-aide!
November 8th, 2006 at 11:52 amI'm AGAINST government regulations! We should all be able to do whatever we want, no matter what the consequences. What's good for General Motors must therefore be good for me. Government is bad. Supervision and regulation is tyranny. It's the government's job to cross it's fingers and HOPE that everybody works for the common good.
I'm AGAINST taxes! I don't owe the government anything. The people in government should work for free. Those soldiers in Iraq? They can plunder for food if they want it. They should cut taxes. And when they've cut taxes, they should do it again.
I'm AGAINST paying for anything. When I go to a restaurant, I DON'T PAY. Let somebody else pay. My paying for things only leaves me with less money.
I don't owe anybody anything, I'm reasonably sure.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:53 amTan: you sir, have you facts jacked up.
Stop pretending that Republicans are the champion of the middle class and they care soooooooo much about the average Joe.
What a joke. Bush's tax cuts gave the middle class about $100 extra a year, yet gave the top .5% about an extra $700,000.
I'll give up my $100 for a balanced budget if your rich Republican buds will give up their $700,000. How's that sound?
November 8th, 2006 at 11:55 amactually, Kevin's comments come as no surprise. Being bored with no comments available here this morning, I bravely ventured over to a right wing blog. Here is just a small portion of what I read:
Be prepared for another 9/11 type attack! (like we haven't been for the last 6 years)
Now the Dem's no longer need to whine about voter fraud! (we're still keeping a close eye on Virginia...wah wah)
I lived for 8 years under Clinton and survived, unfortunately the victims of 9/11 were not so lucky! (whuuuuuu?)
Taxes will go up, the economy will go down! (yeah, because we are living in such great economic times right now)
and my personal favorite:
Well, since the No Child Left Behind Act and the Medicare Reform Act, were actually started by the Dems under Clinton (no sarcastic rebuttal needed here)
The excuses due to a resounding defeat are flippin' hilarioius
November 8th, 2006 at 11:55 am#19
i'm talking about the hundreds of thousands dollars to millionaires income.
November 8th, 2006 at 11:55 amThank you MA for that. I'm sure it was hurting your fingers just to type but you still got in your slant. The messages I'm hearing this morning from Dems are that they are on notice and understand that this election wasn't a ringing endorsement of their policies as much as it was the people of this country rejecting the current administration. It's not a rebuke on all republicans.
I believe the Dems have at least heard the American public. We want change, we want accountability, we want honesty.
Now it's up to all of us to hold them accountable. Pelosi said she wanted this next House of Rep. to be the most ethical in history. I will hold her to that and be first in line to bash them if they falter.
By the way, what are doing in CA supporting a costing winner when you live in VA and your Republican Senator is in quicksand?
November 8th, 2006 at 11:55 amI hate ti inform you but that housing bubble pop started about a month agom under GOP rule. Taxes will not go up until 2011, IF they do, or later, WHY? The Bush Tax cuts are backloaded.
Actually Tax Receipts are UP right now because the Tax cuts shifted the load unto the middle class.
Worker SLowdown has already begun, most of todays Jobs that are being created are service type Jobs. If you want America to keep more Jobs reduce the number of H1-B visas.

November 8th, 2006 at 11:57 am#24 the death tax will return to $600,000 when the Bush tax cut expires. Charles Rangel said that he'd like to rescind every one of Bush's tax cuts. And he's in charge of that committee now.

The beauty of it is it'll make Bush look like a do-nothing, bitter lame duck president. If you think his popularity rating has been in the toilet in the past, just wait!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:00 pmTan,
How do you propose to combat the ever growing deficeit, trade imbalance and pay for the wars that are out there?
Cut taxes? By investing in war bush has basically raised taxes for everyone. You have to pay for things you purchase.....though Republicans love to buy things on credit and then have Dems clean up there mess and then point fingers saying that Dems love to tax. What a joke.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:01 pm#12 - "While I understand that you still feel that the Republicans are the better party, their past performance with climbing debt, run-away spending, rubber-stamp policies, pro-big-federal government tendencies and refusal to take personal responsibility we’re the major reasons they lost the majority...." ******Dear Dem Soldier - I agree with EVERY word above. Repubs lost big and they deserved to.
My disagreement with the Parties is philosophical - Politically, Dems and Progs are to much on the ONE WORLD bandwagon for me. I have always been for emergency social safety nets - but I believe the social hammocks handed out by Dems undermines a persons' humanity. Economically, Progs have a Robin Hood view of themselves. Personal responsibility is often a blurred in Prog World. "Relative morals" are on display daily in the courtrooms of America.
I have a busy schedule today - will return later. Again, my sincere congratulations and heartiest THANK YOU!

November 8th, 2006 at 12:01 pmWho do you call rich? You want to punish people for working hard and taking risk. And then give it to people that refuse to. You want to force people to pay more for unskilled labor so they have to fire people or raise prices of goods and services? You believe the government has the ability to tell businesses how to run? Or do you simply want all businesses to shut down? Do you think the government regulation is the only way for a business to thrive?

Well, the IRS considers "middle class" to be from $35,000 to $75,000. You're whing because it means you'll have to pay your fair share of government expenditures again.

******Dear Dem Soldier - I agree with EVERY word above. Repubs lost big and they deserved to. Mighty Aphrodite
I will add my concurrence. The GOP got trounced last night for a number of reasons -- Traditional "6-year itch" mid-term elections during a presidential second term (Both Reagan and Ike lost the Senate in the sixth years of their presidencies); Iraq; scandals and what Democrat Soldier said above...The House GOP lost its way. It became arrogant and abandoned conservative principles. I STRONGLY support term limits for Members of Congress, so as to prevent either party from falling into the hubris trap that sank the Republicans last evening.

Government regulations = In case it escaped your attention, there were always government regulations and laws. Shrub decided they did not apply to him and his neo-con buddies. Now they will
High taxes = Only on the richest 1% who got the lob-sided tax cuts in the first place
Self Reliance = Moron, overwhelming number of Democrats showing up to vote, so the GOP cannot steal the election is self reliance
Growing Economy = See #9
Hello to unemployment hikes = Only for those GOP neo-con types

November 8th, 2006 at 12:09 pm#32 - Bruce, thanks for the correction!
November 8th, 2006 at 12:10 pm#36 Tax receipts are at the HIGHEST LEVELS EVER.
Tax cuts stimulate the economy to grow, and a growing economy produces tax revenue.
Evidence: Current economy. Current tax revenues.
Spending is a problem but Democrats spend more than Republicans. If they increase spending by increasing taxes, the economy will slow and tax revenues will drop creating even a bigger budget deficit.
Fortunately, Bush has the veto pen so not much is going to happen for the next 2 years. But the tax cuts will expire. Your taxes are going up if you are married and if you pay income taxes. Also if you have income from dividends and capital gains. Remember that if you are retired or planning on a pension that any hit to the stock market jeopardizes your pension.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:11 pmMighty I am impressed with your improved maturity, I think we will all be alright, and the world will continue to turn.

Republican owned businesses.

BTW mighty, in the sentence above you should have used the word "too" but what would a fancy lawyer know about the English language.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:16 pmSuch hand wringing and wailing: "Oh deary, deary me, the dems are going to raise our taxes and there's nothing the president can do about it!"
I had no idea there were so many millionaires visiting TP. What's that? You're not? Then why the hell do you care about some rich fart's mega tax cut?
Since the Republicans are unwilling to show a little fiscal responsibility, someone else has to clean up the mess they made.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:16 pmWell at least the Repubs here today aren't screaming now we are all going to be blown up.
Have we all survived Democrats messing with the economy before, why yes we have, will the Repubs manage to hang on to thier standard of living, why yes they will, so stop whining Tan.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:16 pm#55 - "Spending is a problem but Democrats spend more than Republicans."
You haven't been paying attention since 200, when the Republican have increased discretionary spending faster then Pres. Clinton reduced discretionary spending.
Lower taxes do increase revenues, but only to a point. Once you decrease taxes on the rich and shift the burden to the middle class, then revenues begin to fall again. Also, when taxes are too low, economic fluctuations can reduce federal revenues more than requiring a stable tax rate.
What it all boils down to is that Republicans have ushered in an era of massive deficits and federal debt that will ruin our nation. They've been acting like a crack-whore with a stolen credit card. At some point, the bill will come due and the American people will have to pay for the excesses of the run-away Republican spending over the past 6 years.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:16 pmSo then there were no Tax cuts were there? Sure on paper it was, but Corporations are also paying less Tax.
They have only transferred all this debt unto others,
November 8th, 2006 at 12:17 pmTan - have you checked the deficit and trade surplus #'s lately? Do you know how much money dubbie and his congress borrowed from "Uncle Chen" to play their idiot game? Enough with your old skool GOP Voodoo economics.....you have no idea what will happen to our economy for the next ten years, and your rote repetition of gop scare tactics is just boring. What will happen is that we will suffer the fallout of 12 years of congress on a pork bender and a white house that could give a rat's ass whether the checking account balances or not - it will take years for all of dubbie's crows to come home to roost, and the intelligent among us will know for sure to whom they belong when they do.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:18 pmCongratulations, people. It's a small change, but a change at all.
But, think of this: Democrat candidates generally have turned to the right to get more votes, resulting in a congress where only far right and right survive. And political inertia in the USA is enormous. And, probably, Democrats now will concentrate in exhert power in the just grade to steer away from the far righter politics, but don't expect a break with the past. Few changes in perspective. No impeachments, no backpedal in important laws (read Patriot), no absolute banning of torture, no signing of ICC or Kyoto, etc. Only a softening in the methods, probably. But be they welcome.
I know, I'm very pessimistic, but probably we in the foreing countries see the USA with a better perspective...
Good luck to all (the world).
November 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pmTan
Tax Reciepts are like the record Dow; meaningless if you don't work out the inflation adjusted figures. After all, logically speaking from a pure inflationery increase, every year should be a record year for tax reciepts.
It took years for Tax Reciepts to hit their "Record" levels after Bush's tax cuts. Somehow I doubt that they are really "Record" reciepts.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pm55. Your missguided assumption that Dems spend more than Republicans doesn't hold true for the last 12 years. You so convienently forget about the 500 + billion that is currently being spent in Iraq that isn't anywhere on the current budgets. This is squarely in the republicans list of dumb things and we all will be paying for this for many years to come. We are running a deficit and have since, oh I don't know, the Republicans had come to power. Rangel himself said that he won't be just repealing tax cuts, there is no way to tell the strength, or weakness of the economy, in 2,3 or more years so in the words of Rummy "Back off and relax".
November 8th, 2006 at 12:21 pmIt will be really hard to come anywhere near what the republcans under Bush have spent or do you not pay attention to reality?
The economy is slow or do you not pay attention to reality?
Why not, he hasn't used it to stop any of the republican's outrageous spending or do you not pay attention to reality.
Besides, I don't think he can veto an impeachment.
Good, the rich can start paying their fair share again.
Score one for Captain Obvious.
Captain Obvious strikes again.
What the hell is a pension?
November 8th, 2006 at 12:22 pmActually Bush has only Vetoed olne ONCE in 6 years and has used so many signing statements he has basically nullified congress, one of the checks and balances of our government.

November 8th, 2006 at 12:26 pmIt all has to come from somewhere.
Bush has been taxing America at an insane level for years now.
The only question is who, specifically, is going to pay for it.

Reading through your posts on this thread, something I normally don't do, let me just say that you have my respect on how well you have handled the news. You posted your congratulations with class.
Personally I find neither party any good, but hopefully the Democrats will do a good job over the next two years, or hopefully the mass of Americans will vote for someone other then either party in 2008.

I remind you that the “guest worker†program was Shrub’s idea however I believe meaningful immigration reform will be a topic of discussion.
It was the Shrub's idea, and it basically passed the Senate, the only snag-up for it was the House, now that it's Blue, I assume they'll pass it also. Back when it seemed we would only loose the house I had so wished it was looking like loss of senate instead, for that reason and a few others.
I hope you show up here again and debate for debate is healthy and our Constitution was the result of 11 years of it.
November 8th, 2006 at 12:46 pmEh, careful what you wish for, my debating tends to be slightly factual attempts at humor, except for a few issues that are the core ones to me. (welfare reform, abortion, nuclear (the s is silent) proliferation)
Now that is some scary stuff. Of course MA, like a parent on the sideline of a soccer field, clasps it's hands under it's chin looking proudly at her mad little chimperor running amok.

Probably a re-tooled version, with even greater penalties for hiring illegals. This is a chance to show America a fundamental difference in the way Dems govern, by getting to the heart of the problem. Border enforcement is a band-aid, until you can reduce the numbers heading north.

You are right on the guest worker. The pundits seem to think the House will pass it. I am still euphoric from the win, so I do not know where I stand on this issue.
Your debate style does not matter, your are welcomed. I may have to change my name to "Not so Pissed Off Now" though :-)

Even first-year law students know to include a proper citation for assertions of fact. You can support your claim, no?

November 8th, 2006 at 2:19 pmDig the expression on Da Shrub's face...looks like he's about to burst into tears.
Aw, the poor baby...NOT!

Oh, he's here, in spirit:
Hey, don’t take my word for it, keep doing what you are doing, and keep losing elections, issues and supporters.

I predict the Dem will lose by at least 4 percent. Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler
Have you prepared your rants for your losses on Nov. 7? Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 26, 2006 @ 3:28 pm
Well, it’s been fun, but it is time to go get lunch …Peace and Love
PS See you here the day after the election, so that I can praise Schumer and Emanuel for making gains for Clintonistas, while crushing Lamont and Webb - poor progs will never learn. Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler —October 26, 2006 @ 10:32 am
It is now looking like Dems won’t even come close to taking the house, and it will be Schumer’s ugly face the blame. Progs will then have the opportunity to force Schumer / Emanuel out of power once and for all, and promote their own field of candidates for the 2008 presidential race. You are already destroyed, you just don’t know it yet …Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 30, 2006 @ 10:18 am
I will be here on the morning after the election, and you can tell me all about how America is waking up then, ok? Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 30, 2006 @ 10:25 am
I will be here the morning after the election, in which the Dems fail to even take the House, and we can then talk about how progs can push out Schumer and Emanuel in lieu of candidates who better match progressive policies. Too much of a stretch for you to plan ahead?

I don’t waste time with poll It must be frustrating for you to be so adamant about something, yet the voters in the general election vote for the other guys. Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 30, 2006
I will see you here on the morning after the election. Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 30, 2006 @ 4:01 pm
As I stated yesterday, John Kerry’s apology puts the blame of offense from his statements on the soldiers and their families, and not on himself. Yet another opportunity lost to clear up the issue, and it WILL hurt Dems in this year’s midterm elections.
Other than John Kerry, only Howard Dean has ever killed his presidential aspirations with a single utterance (yee-haw). He now has NO chance at being his party’s nominee in 2008 or ever. Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler
I read your words, yet don’t get that overconfident vibe that was present even as recently as the Busby race. Could Pavlovian negative reinforcement finally gotten through? Do you now see that not only are you fighting a losing cause, but are causing it to lose? I will be here on the morning of Nov. 8 to comfort you after you yet again slam into that brick wall. November 8th, 2006 at 2:39 pmI LOVE!! MA (she's a lawyer, just like Star Jones). Here she comes, shining beacon of good sportsmanship, with a shake of her right hand and a shiv in her left. What a hack, and what a weak attempt to backpedal the egg off her face. Sell it to the rubes, hun - ain't no one in the know buying that line.

November 8th, 2006 at 3:32 pmSEND LAWYERS GUNS AND MONEY to Va now! Webb has more than a 7,000 vote lead over Allen. Webb has declared victory. Yet Allen won’t concede. Control of the senate hangs in the balance.
The latest news reports claim Allen will demand a recount. And under VA law a demand for a recount must be made within ten days after the election is certified, which Va law requires to be done by November 27.
Here are two good articles which set out VA election procedures and scenarios in connection with Webb's apparent victory.

It looks as though the locality-by-locality canvass is critical. Once the canvass is complete (should be done by next Tuesday), the numbers usually don't change significantly in the subsequent recount.
After Florida 2000 and Ohio 2004, the Dems should immediately send all resources to Va, protest Allen’s failure to concede and begin the blitz of the talk shows and media decrying the Republican attempt to steal the election and with it control of the Senate.
