Bolton renomination already dead.

By Nico Pitney on Nov 9th, 2006 at 3:47 pm

Bolton renomination already dead.

“Prospects for extending John Bolton’s job as U.N. ambassador essentially died Thursday as Democrats and a pivotal Republican said they would continue to oppose the nomination,” the AP reports. “Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), who was defeated by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday, told reporters in Rhode Island on Thursday that he would continue opposing Bolton. That would deny Republicans the votes they would need to move Bolton’s nomination from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the full Senate.”

You know, of all the Republicans that had to go it is very sad that one of them had to be Lincoln Chafee. The only Republican Senator to vote against the disaster in Iraq, pro-choice, pro embryonic stem cell etc, etc. He was in the wrong party. Thanks Linc.

  41. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Bush wouldn’t know bi-partisanship if it bit him. Obviously, since he didn’t recognize the bi-partisan rejection of Bolton that has already occured.

  42. Marie says:

Bush makes his conciliatory speech then he turns around and says he will try to ram his boy Bolton through the nomination process. Chafee has already said he will nix it, and the Senate will have a hard time pushing the controversial Bolton. Bolton’s abrasive personality does not suit the role necessary in international relations. It’s unfortunate that Chafee lost, but it increased the number of Dems in the Senate, and it’s time for statesmanship to return.
The world is happy to see that Americans rejected the Bush government, and I suspect they will rejoice when Bush is gone. We may not always like the turn of events in the world, or the way the UN handles matters, but if we intend to remain a super power, we cannot have bullies in the White House and at the UN.

  46. unbelievable says:

After further review, Congresspedia has determined that Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.) meets our criteria for the Members of Congress under investigation page. Harris, who is currently running for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), brings the total to sixteen current and three former members currently the subject of a federal, state, or local probe.

Specifically, Harris is the subject of a joint investigation by both the Justice and Defense Departments for her ties to Mitchell Wade, a convicted defense contractor and former head of MZM Inc. In 2004, Wade made $32,000 worth of illegal contributions to Harris’ House campaign (although he apparently left out the “illegal” part when presenting her with the money). In addition, Wade paid for at least two dinners with Harris at a trendy Georgetown restaurant in 2004-2005 whose combined cost approached a whopping $6,000, a clear violation of House rules. During the second dinner, prosecutors say Wade requested that Harris help secure $10 million in federal funds for a project benefiting his firm in Sarasota, Fla. Harris allegedly submitted a request for the earmark to the House Appropriations Committee, but it was not granted.

look i am a die-hard liberal but what i’ve read here through half of the comments is shameful. liberals have a chance to re-make america and push us forward instead of looking backward and going out for “revenge”. sure there are things that need to be addressed that bush and his cronies have done but we cannot and we must not make the legacy of this election one of hate as the 1994 republican sweep was. we have a chance to differentiate ourselves from the party we ousted, let’s not get bogged down in tit-for-tat. if we are truly thinking progressively then we will realize the futility of the endless revenge cycle. if we are to continue to build upon this momentum we must continue to BUILD and not to tear down.

    aphrodite,
which one of us has not “tweaked the truth” on a resume for a job interview? bolton has been a temporary appointee and as such he has HAD to moderate his tone in order to have a shot at getting the job. he has behaved badly for decades and to ignore that is to ignore human nature. many republicans also voiced concern over his nomination. this is an excellent time to get someone who represents ALL of us since the peoples of both parties inhabit one great nation.

    peace to all.

  70. cameran says:

    hi aphrodite,

perhaps most people, in an ideal world, have “easily verified resumes” but how often is each and every word on a resume verified? in the hiring i’ve done i trust what the person puts on their form to an extent. i think this is true of most people – there isn’t enough time to factually check each and every word to ensure it is correct. even using a resume guidebook for a more “effective” resume is fudging your resume. ideally it would have zero influence from anyone else but yourself.

perhaps Bolton is progressing, but given the opposition to his nomination from both parties he is not in the nation’s best interest as represented by senators from both parties.

take care and peace to all

  72. james risser says:

    whoaaaa!!!!

are we going to just chant ‘kumbayah’ for the next two years??? i certainly did not vote for that, and, i think that i am not alone here… the bush crime family has so dismantled this country, have polluted the ground on which they stand, have stained the constitution, they have filled the air with their filthy lying stench for the past six years. tens of thousands have died because of their ruthlessness. and YOU dare say that the liberals must now not seek ‘revenge’… what a silly naive sentimental belief you have….

if you want to build little green progressive huts on the landscape, i suggest that you first clear the land, give this country some respect in the world by showing the world that such behaviour will not stand. the vote was just the tiniest of first steps in that direction. and, i would suggest that laying on your back and coddling the right-wing is not the right direction.

this country must respect itself again. the bush crime family must pay for the damage they have done to the constitution. they must be held accountable. this is not about getting head in the corridor, this is about blood and guts and dead children and thousands of dead americans and 20,000 plus walking wounded…this is about the constitution, the rule of law, and putting an end to the right’s religious extremism and zealotry.

the time for compromise, now well over fifty hours, is more than enough. roll up your sleeves and get to work putting this country back in shape by investigating, and jailing as many of the bush crime family as we can get in the next two years.

along the way, we can build your little green progressive huts where everyone makes above the minimum wage, gets to have their teeth cleaned and their medicine provided.

Watching the political pundits from the DLC being interviewed on shows like Hardball, (Lisa Scaputo-DLC’er especially), it is clear that the elitists at the DLC are trying to hijack credit for this Democratic victory. They are doing so by giving ALL of the credit to Rahm Emanuel and dis respecting (by not even mentioning) Howard Dean. The time is ripe, dems are now in control, for REAL Democratic liberals and populists to break away from the Republican-lite DLC’ers. So, in response to a Howard Dean email i wrote this response:

    Dear Governor Doctor Dean,
I feel that you should break away from the treachery and arrogance of the DLC because the DLC is being divisive in its efforts to give all the credit for victories to Rahm Emanuel and DLC’ers. Before I donate any more money, I need to know that Howard Dean is using the template of grass roots donors in cyberspace to attempt to garner a majority of support from true Democratic populists and liberals who want to break away from the yoke of the elitists in the DLC- who are at this most crucial juncture disrespecting the architect (Howard Dean) and groups like MoveOn.org and the blogosphere responsible for the Democrat’s takeover of the House and Senate.

Perhaps if more of us liberals present a united front we can get CHANGE within our own party, and purge it of the Republican-lite traitors and elitists.

and then when the republicans take over they will do the same thing to us. it’s an unending cycle, like invading iraq. they kill us – we get pissed – we kill them. we kill them – they get pissed – they kill us.

as i previously said, there are things that need to be investigated – and they should be investigated. however making the party platform one of revanchism only smacks of futility.

the hours spent on witch hunts can be hours spent helping to rebuild this country at home and our image abroad. the more time we waste in an endless revenge cycle the more time we lose to enact real change instead of being part of the problem.

if we want to see change we need to be change. when the republicans came in to power in 1994 their hunts and their revenge began culminating with president clinton’s impeachment. do we now do the same thing? now when any party comes to power should they devote their time petty, ego-boosting squabbles while people starve and die?

investigate what needs to be investigated and move on. this country needs liberals. let’s not waste them on following the “eye for an eye” logic that so many religious extremists used to justify invading iraq.

and then when the republicans take over they will do the same thing to us. it’s an unending cycle, like invading iraq. they kill us – we get pissed – we kill them. we kill them – they get pissed – they kill us.

with all due respect, this is truly nonsense. we are not talking about getting head in the corridor, or even covering-up a burglary. this is about murder, war-crimes, death, and destruction. did you read that? murder, war-crimes, death and destruction!!! this is about a feces-stained constitution, war-profiteering, and treason….this is not about ‘ego-boosting squabbles’ and to say so shows that you have no idea just how serious it really is. one must wonder where someone who says that has been for the past six years… it is pitiable to think that there are people able to type who would type such tripe in 2006.

this is not a ‘cycle of revenge’, whatever that means. it is about restoring the country so that it CAN proceed. if this feces-stained band of retarded right-wing maniacs are not summarily investigated, dismissed, and then jailed, your progressive agenda will be built on a steaming pile of that which comes out of the rear-end of a dog.

  84. cameran says:

    hello SpudgeBoy,

actually i am middle eastern and my last name is the same as one of the 9/11 hijackers. one of them even had a contact at my place of work, which made it difficult for people like me. i’ve gotten all the insults, 2:00AM threatening telephone calls, nasty looks, that many liberals love to talk about when they “sympathize” with us. i now have an unlisted number because of it. i have not traveled since 9/11 due to severe difficulties with airports because of my name and ethnicity. hate to burst your bubble.

nonetheless i believe we need to move forward and not look back. i want that part of time to be gone for those of us who actually suffered, not those who “sympathize”. what im saying is that my family did not leave one totalitarian regime for another, and when this country became totalitarian it was deeply upsetting. however i believe in this country and its ideals and feel we can do our best by being our best, not by aping those we have just ousted. it’s like animal farm. no do we walk on two legs too? we have to resist this natural urge for revenge and do the investigations that need to be done but not embark on outright witch hunts for those who have done such harm.

what an opportunity we have as liberals to move forward, not backward. we must prosecute and investigate those crimes that were done and then move on. we’ve got to be bigger than them.

    cameran

  85. SpudgeBoy says:

    cameran,

Sorry, you are not going to change mind mind one single bit.

You say you left one totalitarian regime and don’t want another, well, thanks to us “sympathizing” liberals, you won’t have that problem. We just got rid of the fascist and it is time to hold them accountable for their crimes.

I don’t know what country you come from, but in America, criminals are held to account for what they have done.

This isn’t about revenge, it is about upholding our US Constitution, which has been trampled by the Bush regime. So, while your utopia sounds really great, you won’t find me hugging a tree or wanting to hold hands with my republican “brothers” anytime soon.

Bush and his followers made me this way. I don’t dislike nor want to take revenge on republicans. One reason is that Bush and his criminal friends are not republicans, they are Neo-Cons. They tried to take this country down a black hole and we stopped him. Now he must stand trial for his crimes.

When a murderer is put on trial, it isn’t the state taking revenge on him, it is the law in action.

How did this big fat sweaty loser pop up to discuss “resumes” Here is a clue-Bolton is a neo-con moron. MA how are the walks along the shore going? Did you pack a picnic basket? maybe some scones? What is with the “green tea” thing? MA what is the name of the new Speaker of the House? MA enjoy the next two years. I hear that that bald problem you have can be solved. Call me. Damn, this is real fun!

  89. Marie says:

    Cameran, Spudge is right.
Bush’s fascist regime was destroying our democracy. He is a criminal as are those in his White House.
It’s nice to say we shouldn’t look back, but move forward – generally an admirable philosophy, but it won’t work in this case.
Bush&Co will take advantage of those who take the high road – they must be stopped and suffer consequences for what they have done.

After six years of the Bush crime family, it’s provided greater understanding of the passion and emotion of the people who ran the underground in the Civil War era, or of the people who harbored Jews from the Nazis, or the resistance during WWII. Bush has made me skeptical and cynical, but also passionate about my country and democracy.

104 – I haven’t had the opportunity to research it, but my understanding is if they give Bolton a different title, he can get paid with taxpayer dollars. However, I hope that if the title is the only thing that has changed in a sham attempt to go around the Constitutional process of confirmation by the Senate, that some sort of lawsuit could be filed to prevent a second recess appointment.

I agree. The focus here is on the motivation behind investigations. Investigate. Shine light upon that which was done in shadows. Prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law.

But do not let your hearts be filled with a desire for revenge. Go forward with a heart of peace to seek justice. It’s not about revenge. It’s about making things right, about restoring balance.

It’s a difficult concept to put into words, but revenge is born of anger, and anger will only consume you, and cloud your judgement. To seek Justice with a peaceful heart is to see clearly, to think clearly, to be more focused, more alert, more thorough and more effective.

There is no need to seek revenge. Seek Justice. Once you have attained Justice, you will know that is enough.

    Peace and Blessings.

  96. Jeremy says:

Mighty Aphrodite, it’s now your turn.

You lost. Get over it. Sound familiar? It should…you people have been shoving that into the face of Left-Leaning people since 2000.

Now that you’re losers, it’s time for you to reinvent yourself. One must learn from the mistakes of their past if they ever intend on changing. So, what went wrong?

I’ll give you a hint. I am what sank your party. Specifically, the people who sank your party are people like me. What am I? *clears throat, resisting urge to say ‘Shoushi’* I am an Independant. Mighty Aphrodite, my group broke for Democrats almost as hard as the Democrats did themselves. We Independants don’t vote for the party, we vote for the person and for the situation. Republicans used to be our answer to Democratic excesses: massive entitlement programs, heavy taxes, and out-of-control spending. Republicans have traditionally had their own issues too: Free reign for big business, increasing deficits, and the old ‘Good-Old-Boy’ phenominon of appointing people who are not qualified for their jobs as rewards for their support. But we could always count on the Republicans to deal with Democrats spending like drunken sailors…

Until Bush 43. You people have increased government, spent like drunk sailors, and did everything Republicans usually do. Is it any wonder the Independants are now breaking to Democrats? If we’re going to get out of control spending, at least let us get the benefits the Dems bring.

Mighty Aphrodite, do you want your party back in power? If so, leave this place and go back to your own party and be the change you want to see. My suggestions to you and your party:

    1) Lose the Religious Right. They grow government, not shrink it.

    2) Trim your leadership of the people who led you into 2006. At least punish them and remind them that Republicans win Elections when they follow their creed.

    3) Cut the partisan rhetoric. Act like statesmen and gentlemen (and ladies), not like thugs.

    4) RETURN TO YOUR PARTY’S CONSERVATIVE ROOTS!

If the Republicans can act like small government conservatives, you’ll win back the Libertarian vote. You won’t keep my vote, as there’ll be times in my life when I say it’s been enough and you need to take a rest, but at least you’ll have more of a chance.

Lastly, Mighty Aphrodite, look closely at point 3 up there. That’s addressed directly to you You attract more flies with honey than vinegar. You’re rude, overconfident, self-absorbed, and just nasty in general. Moderate your tone and present yourself as a Conservative who would like to learn from your mistakes and better yourself, and you’ll get alot more respect. Your party does that, it may well find itself back in the saddle in the next 5 to 10 years…maybe sooner depending on how the Dems act the next two years.

Learn from your defeat, MA, lest you’re forced to experience it all over again. See ya.

Excellent post Jeremy! And include me into that catagory.

I voted for the Republican govenor in my state because he is a former Democrat who was far more liberal than his Democratic challenger who wanted to increase The Death Penalty in my state. But I voted for the Democratic Congressman even though I knew nothing about him because I wanted Republicans to lose the majority that badly.

Thanks for reminding people who is the real swing vote… The Independents.
