Bush Will Push Bolton Nomination in Lame Duck Session»

At today’s White House press conference, Tony Snow revealed that the White House has officially renominated John Bolton as U.N ambassador and plans to push for his confirmation during the lame duck session of Congress. Bolton, who has repeatedly failed to gain Senate confirmation, is one of Bush’s most divisive nominations. The move comes one day after Bush pledged to “to work with the new Congress in a bipartisan way.” Watch it:

In September, Bolton’s nomination was sent back to the White House after Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) said he had “more questions that needed to be answered.”

Incoming Senate Foreign Relations chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) said yesterday that Bolton’s nomination is “going nowhere,” but previous accounts have indicated that Bush plans to again recess appoint him during the lame-duck session.

Transcript:

On the other hand, the readout I got from the meeting is it was primarily focused on the lame-duck session, where you’ve got a Vietnam free trade agreement that we want to get done, an Indian civil nuclear agreement that’s of great importance; obviously the budget matters, the outer continental shelf, nominations of John Bolton and also, if possible, Bob Gates and the Terrorist Surveillance Act.

    heckuva job on that bipartisianship.

  2. Fredric L. Rice Says:

    Why not Henry Kissinger?

Why doesn’t this mass murdering Christofascist terrorist simply appoint convicted war criminal Henry Kissinger and get it the f*ck over with?

Any pretence that these terrorist butcher are anything but inhuman monsters has long since been exposed.

  3. SpudgeBoy Says:

Did anybody catch Bush use the ‘Who could have known” line regarding the Democrats taking over, during his Q&A yesterday.

  4. ForTruth Says:

The ball game has changed quite a bit, ay Tony?

Was Tony counting on this turn of events when he accepted his dream job?

How’s it now being the White House Press guy?

  5. SpudgeBoy Says:

    How about this exchange:

    Q. And also, Mr. President, may I ask you if you have any metrics you’d be willing to share about your reading contest with Mr. Rove.

THE PRESIDENT: I’m losing. I obviously was working harder in the campaign than he was. (Laughter.)

    AUDIENCE: Oooooh!

Classic bitch slap. That is the funniest thing I have ever heard Bush say.

  6. ForTruth Says:

No I missed that line Spudge, I guess when you live in a bubble, there’s a lot you don’t know about.

  7. ForTruth Says:

Bush’s biggest fault is listening to the neo-cons. He seems to be backing off of that now, as he has no other choice.

  8. ForTruth Says:

Where are all the damn trolls?

  9. RantingTommy Says:

    Bolton is an asshole.

Most everyone I have ever met that would wear a mustache like that is an asshole.

  10. KRank Says:

I’m actually relieved to hear about Bush wanting to push Bolton. It occured to me that a Democratic Congress might be a late-inning chance for Boy King to actually show that he can work with both parties, as he claimed to do in Texass. That could be the one thing that could salvage his reputation, kind of like Arnold in California.

Doesn’t look like that’s on the agenda, at least not right away.

  11. Isis Says:

Bolton is another Bush “yes man” - clueless interim appointee who has zero credentials for the position, just like most of his other appointees, as we’ve sadly and at large personal cost to citizens of this country, come to realize (Katrina??).

  12. Isis Says:

From his comedic press conference yesterday, the one thing I heard loud and clear was that his stubborn stupidity will continue, despite the wishes of the populace, and despite any sophisticated, credentialed evidence he receives to the contrary. I’ll give the idea of “working with this President” about two weeks into January before the concept is recognized as the farsical nonsense that the talking heads are purporting it to be right now.

His inflexibility is only trumped by the sheer stupidity of not listening to people who are more intelligent than he is, more scientifically and militarily inclined due to their experience level (where was he in the Vietnam war?), and now the voice of the people whom, AHEM…INCIDENTALLY….he serves.

He may be called commander in chief but that is at the pleasure and wishes of the people who not only pay his paycheck but whose wishes he must respect.

  13. Isis Says:

couldn’t leave a comment below because the stack flow was over the top so this is off topic, pardonne moi…..but what the heck is an indicted criminal such as Tom DeLay doing on the mainstream networks? Whose brilliant idea was it to now start giving criminals air time?? Get his mug outta here! He has zippo credibility and has been indicted…don’t want to see his face ever again in the public eye.

  16. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

Back to the same old dirty tricks…and it’s only been 2 days.

  17. Fools in the GOP Says:

The people have spoken and Bush is deaf and death.

  18. ShamRockNRoll Says:

Can Bush get away with this recess appointment yet again? Now that the Dems are in contol is there anything they can do?

  19. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

“Bush and Pelosi pledge to find common ground..”

Bush will say, “Do exactly as I say and we’ll get along just fine.”

Democrats will remind him that negotiating means listening to the other side.

Faux News will declare that Bush is trying to work with Democrats but that Dems are not working with him.

  20. Krazny Says:

I think this is bush trying to see if he is still relevant, and has power. When he gets slapped down, he will fully understand his powerlesness.

  21. Karim Says:

Bipartisanship? If the Senate would not confirm Bolton when the Republicans were in the majority, what makes you think that they will not that the Democrats have the majority?

  22. PAL Says:

Dems need to make it clear that another recess appointment would seriously damage any hope of Bush getting things done in his last two years. Quack! Quack!

  23. idlecrank Says:

So is this what Georgie Bush means by working with Democrats? Pushing through failed policies and nominees before the clock strikes midnight?

  24. Dog_named_Boo Says:

Why did the moot duck cross the road?

    Who cares!

  25. unbelievable Says:

I guess he doesn’t understand the definition of a LAME DUCK yet…

  26. chimpeach Says:

That’s a heckuva good faith gesture, Dubya.

Care to piss in the punchbowl while you’re at it?

  27. SpudgeBoy Says:

    George Allen just conceded Virginia.

  28. Joseph Says:

Not Ambassador. John Bolton is not being nominated as “Ambassador”

Bolton is being nominated as “US Representative”, because if he got a second nomination and recess appointment as “Ambassador”, he couldn’t be paid by US Law.

  29. Pissed Off Says:

Bush Stood by Rummy then a Big Yellow Bus came along and Shrub shoved Rummy under it.

Now, Shrub is standing by Bolton.

I hear another Big Yellow Bus coming and looks-like Madam Speaker is driving it.

Watch out Johnny. Them wheels sure will make a mess out of you.

  30. DallasNE Says:

Once again we have to focus on what Bush does rather than what he claims he will do. It remains that if Bush’s lips are moving he is lying. No amount of PR can restore trust once it has been compromised.

Democrats will have to be agressive when it comes to signing statements that gut legislation. In fact, I smell a court test in the near future on this very subject.

  31. pgl Says:

Still being the divider not the uniter. Pathetic.

  32. lasermike026 Says:

Doesn’t sound like Bush is changing the course.

    Bolton’s got to go.

We have to stop the wiretapping.

    Stop the torture.

    Restore habeas corpus.

    Let not forget Iraq…

We really have to be smart for the next 2 years.

  33. DanF Says:

    Nice. Bolton. Real nice.

  34. Progressive Patriot Says:

    Laser Mike said:

“We have to stop the wiretapping.
    Stop the torture.
    Restore habeas corpus.
    Let not forget Iraq”

This is true but I think one of the big priorities is a tamperproof election system. We came out in such numbers that it couldn’t be stolen but without a change in the system the next close race could be tampered with. We also need much more stringent laws on campaign financing, truth in campaign advertising and voter intimidation and disenfranshisement. The penalties need to be stiff.

Another issue that is vital is combatting the media. Reagan killed the fairness doctrine for a reason, if they truly believed that there was a liberal MSM they would have left it in place. The fairness doctrine needs to comeback for all broadcast tv and for all cable tv that is represented as a news show. Also the definition of obscenity needs to be broadened, the bile and outright lies that comes from FoxNews is far more obscene than Janet Jackson’s nipple. Net neutrality is essential. Also when it comes to the media, media companies must be soley owned or strictly media purposed corporations. When defense contractors and other non-media corporate interests own media firms we have a deadly conflict of interest.

I understand the hot buttons like torture and wiretapping and habeas corpus are vitally important but for me I would love to know that we are having free and fair elections where everyone who is eligible to vote gets the chance and where we have a free flow of truthful information to the electorate. If we had that, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

  35. Wayne Says:

How can we tell when Bush is lying?

    His lips move.

  36. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

Progressive Patriot laid out a list of very important tasks for the new Congress. Personally, I don’t really care what order they are taken up, as long as they are all accomplished by this time next year when the ‘08 Presidential Election season starts gearing up to full bore. We have one year to PROVE that Democrats deserve the power.

  37. Mr. Todd Says:

lol yay bipartisanship. that took awhile. o wait.

  38. SpudgeBoy Says:

I for one would like to see more nipples on TV. As a heterosexual male, I can’t get enough female nipples.

  39. ForTruth Says:

Maybe FOX news will make a new position for him, like Minority UN Ambassador.

  40. Josh P. Says:

Yes, Progressive Patriot is on the right track. And if Bushco really thinks they can get him throught the Senate, they are crazy!

If you really want to get a laugh and /or send chills up your spine, take a visit over to RedState and see what the mood is over on the other side. It ranges from the resigned to the disturbed.

  42. Tatarize Says:

Rather than kill it in committee they should let it go to the floor. Then on the floor, filibuster the nomination. This will kill the nomination unless the lame duck Republicans go nuclear. Which would be shooting themselves in the foot… it would be funny as heck to see. Sure, it would get them the nomination but it would lose them filibuster power for the next two years too.

Just start filibustering everything. They can’t go nuclear anymore anyway, unless they don’t want their feet.

  43. Tatarize Says:

Next two years at least, I should say. I doubt the Republicans could flip the senate in the next cycle more true when you look at how many Dems will be fighting for reelection vs how many Republicans.

  44. Andrew Says:

I just heard Chafee killed the nomination.. Looking for sources.

  45. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

  47. The Daily Background Says:

[…] All signs point to yes. The only question is, how much will get done? There is word that the White House wants to get some loose ends with regards to the warrant-less wiretapping program worked out, and Tony Snow said today that the President is keen on getting United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton officially nominated. […]

  48. Heynow Says:

More time and money wasted because of this GWB’s incompetence.

  49. KO Says:

I hope all remember that anything he (Bush) says is a lie. If you look at the Wikipedia entry for Neocons you’ll find that ALL of those appointed to any position of power are Neocons. IF you look at Wikipedia, you’ll find that they are really PNA sect Neocons - as Wikipedia says, if I may quote:

Present and former members include prominent members of the Republican Party and the Bush Administration, including Richard Armitage, William J. Bennett, Jeb Bush, Ellen Bork (the wife of Robert Bork), Dick Cheney, Zalmay Khalilzad, Lewis “Scooter’” Libby (who has been indicted by a federal grand jury), Richard Perle, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz. Many of the organization’s ideas, and its members, are associated with the neoconservative movement. PNAC has seven full-time staff members, in addition to its board of directors.
…the controversial organization proposes military and economic space, cyberspace, and global domination by the United States, so as to establish — or maintain — American dominance in world affairs (Pax Americana). “

Pelosi better quit her BushCo-dependency by returning US our Constitutional rights and reading Bush and Cheney theirs under Miranda.

  51. Audrey Says:

Off topic, but does anyone know how much of Democrats’ taxpayer money George Bush spent flying around the country campaigning for the Repub losers?

  52. Dan Says:

Man, this place is just full of flamers with little to no substance to back up anything they say. Don’t you people have jobs or are you just a bunch of hippies with nothing else to do all day….

  53. meangator Says:

It looks like a look of you forgot to take your meds and the delusions are starting to return. Bush has tried numerous times to work with the Demoist and each and every time got a knife in his back. What he should of done was give them a taste of their own medicine.

  54. tom baker Says:

Dan - Why don’t you impress us all with your insights, before just shooting your mouth off like a typical rightard??

  55. tom baker Says:

Meangator - you’re a flippin psycho if you believe even one word of that post…..Bush is the most cowardly backstabbin bitch that American politics has ever known, and he’d better start kissin some ass real quick….take your computer back to rent-a-center, and maybe they’ll give you your deposit back….practice some more in the shallow end of the pool before shooting your fool mouth off in my presence.

  56. tom baker Says:

Yeah - that’s what I figured - neither of you have what it takes. How surprised am I?

  59. radioguts Says:

I have chased that Bolton with my ebay toast and his stupid mug with walrus mustache made of my dog’s hair framed, as an educational ploy THREE TIMES ALREADY, is it time to do it again ? When will these guys learn ? BOLTON IS TOAST !!!!

  60. Truthdetector Says:

Bolton has done a great job and these hacks wont even give the man an up or down vote? We have seen the democrats agenda. Their top priorities are a Minimum wage hike and a tax on the oil industry? Are we all living on the same planet here? These guys were bitching and moaning about how bad Iraq was, offered NO alternatives to any of the policies that were in place other that leave ASAP, and now they win on Iraq and offer up nothing but the same old routine. The fact that Pelosi wants that idiot Murtha as Leader just shows how insane these people are.

America will get what it deserves for voting these people back into power.

  61. Truthdetector Says:

Tom, the democrats were the ones who called Bush a liar after the 9/11 commission report concluded nobody lied. It was the democrats who said nothing about Michael Moore’s cut and paste fantasy film, they said nothing about Dan Rather and the fake memo, claimed Bush duped them with false intel, again after 9/11 commission and you attack him because he didn’t try to reach out and extend an olive branch to these pigs?

It’s hard to work with people who hate you Tom. you guys won and you’re still spewing out the insults. Pathetic.

  62. Truthdetector Says:

Poor liberals. The democrats may be in power but the majority of them who won did so because they acted like republicans. So all you “String up Bush and Cheney” dimwits had better realize that there will be no impeachment. Primarily because no crimes were committed, but since when do facts ever get in the way of your agenda? Secondly, the dems in power know that if they proceed with that agenda they can kiss their chances of winning in 08 goodbye. It will be fun to see what that frozen faced Pelosi does with the old dem guard who want impeachment and the newbies who don’t.

  63. Truthdetector Says:

Henry Kissinger is a convicted war criminal? What ass did you pull THAT out of?

Kissinger was convicted, in absentia in 1976, by The Peoples Tribunal of North Vietnam of crimes against humanity.
