First Post-Election Meet the Press Features Exclusively Pro-War Politicians»

The 2006 election was defined by a) a repudiation of the war in Iraq and the current Iraq strategy, and b) widespread national victories for Democratic House, Senate, and gubernatorial candidates.

Yet, according to a press aide, this Sunday’s edition of NBC’s Meet the Press will include two interviews: one with Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), an Iraq war supporter who defeated Ned Lamont (D-CT), and one with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who recently called for 20,000 additional U.S. troops to be sent to Iraq, and who was not up for reelection in 2006.

In other words, the first post-election edition of Meet the Press will exclusively feature politicians who support the war in Iraq, neither of whom ran as a Democrat.

Digg it!

It’s called the Loser edition of MTP!

  2. JaneESchneider Says:

Well, there’s a freakin’ waste of interview time!

  3. Geoffrey Says:

Guess the media didn’t get the message on Tuesday that this crowd LOST.

  4. Bluedog49 Says:

When Mediamatters.org showed data proving that MTP had many more republicans on than dems, MTP responded by pointing out that Repubs were in the majority. I look forward to seeing lots of Democrats on MTP.

  5. Pissed Off Says:

The programm will have a new name

    “Meet the Depressed”

  6. Exley Says:

#2 Hi Jane….Haven’t had a chance to congratulate you personally on Tuesday’s big win….Congrats. As for me, first the Mets go down and then this! It’s been a bad couple of weeks for me!

  7. SpudgeBoy Says:

And who is sitting between the McCain Rumsfeld circle jerk, but none other than Joe Lieberman. Who woulda thunk it?

  8. Krazny Says:

If it makes you feel better Exley, while I am not a Detroit native, coming from an AL town, Seattle, I was bummed at the Tigers loss in the world series.

Good time to arrest the traitors

When all these pro-terrorism Christian butchers are gathered together, that’s time the to hang them.

Wait until FBI releases videos of the plane hitting the Pentagon.

  13. Exley Says:

Hey Juan…I thought you DIDN’T believe that a plane hit the Pentagon?

  14. JaneESchneider Says:

Exley, while I can’t say that I’m sorry for your second loss, I can certainly empathize with you. Thanks for your congratulations. The congressional candidate that I volunteered for (NY-19, John Hall) ended up squeaking through and beating the 12-year incumbent. And he sang the Star-Spangled Banner with Stephen Colbert last night! Colbert did a suprisingly good harmony–I’d like to see the two of them perform it at Shea next Opening Day! I’m looking forward to next January, then next April!

Krazny, you know that we Mets fans were rooting for Detroit, too. Actually, the first World Series that I remember really paying attention to was 1968, Tigers vs Cards, the Denny McLain era. (Showing my age, yuch!) Seattle always fields a good team, too.

Gotta run, Wayne went home not feeling well. See you all tomorrow.

  15. Marie Says:

I prefer Stephanopolous anyway, catching MTP at the nighttime rerun; now I will check TP comments/videos on line and maybe skip the show altogether.
Little Timmy all too often has conservative guests and one independent who leans right and believes he is being equal with time. He skewers Dems at every opportunity and too frequently lets the conservatives skate with their outrageous and often not factual comments.

  16. Marie Says:

    #4 Bluedog49
I had not heard that MTP defense before :)
Let’s see if little Timmy changes his guest list after January. Apparently a lot of us will be checking.

  17. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dear Exley - I understand why MTP would want to put “PRO-WAR” guests on their show. The “Pro-Peace at ANY Cost” group (Cindy Sheehan, Dennis Kucinich, John Murtha, Russ Feingold, et al) would just be TOO telling of the lapse of security judgement by the American people. Hopefully Repubs will get back to Reagan basics promoting national security and a robust economy….

  18. Veritas78 Says:

Why do you watch? Why do we care? This is dead media.

I was messing with you. :)

  22. mighty aphrodite Says:

Nico - Since when have you or anyone at TP been concerned with “Fair and Balanced” media coverage? I must have missed the big Ned Lamont loses “BIG TIME” and “Senator Bill Nelson’s drunk son arrested” stories….

  23. pluege Says:

hey, pumpkin head has to give those who are completely out of step with Americans their chance to spin first before the truth can be discussed - its the only fair and balanced thing to do. Besides, timmeh wanted to be the first to showcase the republican presidential team for ‘08
    .

  24. pluege Says:

a pithy little cover from across the pond says it all…

holy crap, that’s some scary picture.
    .

  25. Fredric L. Rice Says:

Do you get the impression they’re obsolete?

It’s great watching these mainstream media outlets continue to lose readers anbd viewers, retaining only the lower of the less educated as their consumer base while better educated people go more and more to the Internet.

I would expect that there are still newspapers making a profit; can’t imagine television shows like this one having enough viewers to pay the rent.

  26. james risser Says:

a bit off-topic, but, it may interest some…

i was just reading an editorial in the washington times entitled ‘iraq exit strategies’ discussing leaked portions of baker’s iraq study group and their intuition that the road to peace in the middle east must start in palestine and then into iraq…

The prospect of a Palestinian state in the foreseeable future looked even dimmer with the creation of a newly-formed evangelical Christian organization in the U.S. that aims to include all pro-Israel Christians, and, according to its founder, will soon make it the single most powerful Christian organization in America. “We are a one-issue organization — and the issue is Israel, Israel and then Israel,” Pastor John Hagee told the Jerusalem Post from his headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Hagee, 66, is president and CEO of Global Evangelical Television, which is broadcast to over 90 million homes in the U.S.
The group’s main focus, according to Ha’aretz, is to lobby the U.S. government on Israel-related issues. Its leaders are planning a weekly teleconference among senior church leaders about Israel-related events happening in Washington, as well as an annual summer meeting of thousands of Christian leaders in Washington with U.S. legislators.
Dubbed the “Christian AIPAC,” after the powerful American Jewish lobby for Israel, the newly-created evangelical Christian group interfaces with the Knesset’s “Christian Allies Caucus,” according to the Jerusalem Post. A Pew Foundation poll shows 53 percent of Americans believe God gave Israel to the Jews. And 59 percent, according to a CNN/Time survey, agree paradise for Christians can only be achieved once Jews are in control of the Holy Land (which includes Palestine).

  27. francais Says:

Are they only allowed to have anti war democrats on Meet the Press? That must be in their by-laws I guess.

“Senator Bill Nelson’s drunk son arrested” stories….

Have liberals become teetotalers now.? If that’s true that’s one damn good reason not to become a liberal.

  28. james risser Says:

what will happen if the baker iraq study group actually suggests that the best way out of iraq for bush is to return palestine to the palestinians and have israel stop their occupation???

i also read about another leaked portion suggesting that the biden break-up into three idea is also featured. this would essentially mean giving the shiite region to iran…perhaps as a buffer to the sunnis?

    should be interesting reading….

  29. big papa Says:

Watching the political pundits from the DLC being interviewed on shows like Hardball, (Lisa Scaputo-DLC’er especially), it is clear that the elitists at the DLC are trying to hijack credit for this Democratic victory. They are doing so by giving ALL of the credit to Rahm Emanuel and dis respecting (by not even mentioning) Howard Dean. The time is ripe, dems are now in control, for REAL Democratic liberals and populists to break away from the Republican-lite DLC’ers. So, in response to a Howard Dean email i wrote this response:

    Dear Governor Doctor Dean,
I feel that you should break away from the treachery and arrogance of the DLC because the DLC is being divisive in its efforts to give all the credit for victories to Rahm Emanuel and DLC’ers. Before I donate any more money, I need to know that Howard Dean is using the template of grass roots donors in cyberspace to attempt to garner a majority of support from true Democratic populists and liberals who want to break away from the yoke of the elitist in the DLC- who are at this most crucial juncture disrespecting the architect (Howard Dean) and groups like MoveOn.org and the blogosphere responsible for the Democrat’s takeover of the House and Senate.

Perhaps if more of us liberals present a united front we can get CHANGE within our own party, and purge it of the Republican-lite traitors and elitists.

DNC Democrats pushed the cart. Howard Dean? He’s the reason for our victory.

Oh and Mighty Afrodite (I know, you spell it with a ph, but I always picture you with an Afro when I see the name), how about that Lamont number?
Why do you suppose the exact same number of votes he lost by is the exact same number the Republican candidate lost by in that state in 2000? Hmmm…
    Diebolded again.
However! One loss out of so many gains is no biggie! We got the House, the Senate, major victories over idiotic measures all over the country, many new Democratic governors - I can’t be too upset about one millionaire not making the grade.
Too bad that’s all you have to taunt us with — I guess it sucks to be a Republican today!

  43. Hank Essay Says:

Funny…since a rumor going around is that McCain and Lieberman are going to run together in 08….What a way to kick things off, no?

  44. Erroll Says:

Unfortunately, this is not surprising. In the months leading up to the war, only 1 per cent of those voices who were heard on the corporate airwaves were anti-war. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.

  45. VaporBong Says:

NBC is owned by GE - the third biggest WAR contractor in this Iraq debacle. Look at it this way, you think they’re gonna allow credible anti-war pols on TV criticizing a major stream of revenue?

Russert and GE should take heed from Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”:

    “You fasten the triggers
    For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
    You hide in your mansion
    As young people’s blood
    Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud”

  46. katy Says:

really - what is it with comb-overs?…

  47. Dr. Wu Says:

The voters have kicked the neocons out of the Congress. It remains to be seen whether the voters can kick the neocon whores out of the press. I am hopeful that we will see the end of the day when Russert and the rest of the GOP apologists on the cocktail-weenie circuit can garner revenue-positive ratings for their wingnuttery.

  48. vwcat Says:

Maybe russert just wants to rub the war in thier faces.

    (sarcasm off)

  53. Lora Says:

    #51 Jon Creeley,
Als a matter of fact, all of Jeb and George Bush’s children have been apprehended either for underage drinking or substance abuse. And Jeb’s wife was fined at an airport for trying to sneak in undeclared luxury goods, purchased in France (a country which good Republicans are supposed to disdain).

Let’s not let them get away with anything.

  63. The Fool Says:

Gates and Negroponte all we need now are for Ollie and Poindexter to wash

Workers coming aboard anythings in play. The old ways are the best ways.

  67. hit_escape Says:

I hate to say this, but Lieberman is probably the most powerful man in congress right now. I can’t imagine the buy-off offers both sides are offering him now. Don’t play his game and your side loses the vote. Who’d of frickin’ thought?

  68. crigb Says:

Well who knows, maybe it will be a version of kick them while there down. Russert could go on a tact ….”Well, what do you have to say now that the votes are in. It could be interesting.

  69. Dr.Tettrazini Says:

Lieberman is caught between real power and the false power of the turn coat that hears what he wants to hear but builds no trust. He has been shown to have no honor when asked to support the candidate of his party.
Does the new bipartizen happiness include reciepts for the Republican slush funds $20million. Lieberman has made his bed and he wont get much rest
    without keeping one eye open.

  70. Gregor Samsa Says:

Rumsfeld is finally acknowledging what we have known all along -well, at least those of us who use our brains:

this only confirms how meaningless the show is now. it is the indicator that the NOOZ is really marginal. it is the national enquirer now, the tattler

they clearly have no future, so perhaps we should consider leaving them alone so that they can go away

  75. Mugsy Says:

I’ve been wondering about this. The Sunday shows have typically included at least one Conservative guest every week for four years. Their defense has been that it’s because there were more Conservatives in charge.

Now that Democrats are in charge, will we start to see more Democrats on the Sunday shows or will they still have on more R’s than D’s?

  76. Roger_Roger Says:

You guys better not let Liebermann back in with the Dems. You would just look like a party eager for power. After the ripping you did to him, you would be hypocrits if you caucas with him.

  77. JaneESchneider Says:

RR, “You would just look like a party eager for power.” So you’re telling Dems not to look like power-hungry, greedy Republicans? That’s pretty funny. And it’s up to Lieberman whether he caucuses with us, not the other way around.

  81. ItsJustKarma Says:

All this is quite entertaining, BUT
looking at the three Stooges here one thing is clear:
Instead of criminal charges against Dumbsfeld he get’s airtime. Lieberman sucks as big time as all the other hipocrites in the political landscape and don’t get me started with MacPain. Question: Why would George Rove Bush give himself more power than any other President before, to hand it to a Democratic President later on (2008 - 2200)?
