Snow On Bolton: ‘What Complaint Do You Have With A Man Who Has Been So Successful?’»

boltonn.jpg In yesterday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Tony Snow defended U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, saying he has been “highly successful” and “has demonstrated an ability to work effectively with other members and other U.N. delegations”:

And the real question is, what complaint do you have with a man who has been so successful in pushing through vital National Security Council resolutions through the United Nations and has been awfully effective?

Bolton will be leaving a tenure that has been characterized by ineffectiveness and U.S. estrangement from the world community. Some highlights of Bolton’s “highly successful” tenure:

Isolated the United States from its allies on the Human Rights Council. The United States was one of four nations to oppose the creation of the Council. (170 nations voted for it.) Out of 30 or so negotiating sessions over the creation of the Council, Bolton attended just one. He also argued for permanent membership for China and Russia on the Council.

Made stopping genocide in Sudan a low priority. In early June, Bolton skipped a U.N. Security Council mission to Sudan for a speaking engagement at the Centre for Policy Studies, a right-wing think tank in London. Most other nations, including the UK, China, and France, sent their top representatives.

Sought to undermine the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs aimed to convert rhetoric into hard numbers on such issues as reducing global poverty and hunger. Just days after he arrived in New York after his recess appointment, Bolton released over 700 edits to the draft document for the 2005 World Summit Outcome, excising all mentions of the MDGs.

  6. james risser Says:

at the risk of offending my more zionist brothers, bolton’s stance vis-a-vis israel is also quite offensive to the world. to mention a recent example, his veto of a security council resolution aimed at israel for the indiscriminate killing of civilians in lebanon earned him these words from dar al hayat:

John Bolton, the US envoy to the UN, has degenerated from a crude Zionist to the most obnoxious level of Zionist racism. In his opinion, the killing of Lebanese civilians should not be considered the same as the deaths of civilians in Israel. He believes that Israeli civilians who are killed are the victims of terror, while Lebanese civilians are killed in ‘military operations dictated by the principle of self defense’. Bolton, once honored by some Lebanese who thought he had become sane, should be admitted into a mental hospital. But he managed to stay out of it, and qualified as Bush’s envoy to the UN.

ironically, it is, of course, the jewish elephant in the room that those who oppose bolton dare not mention for risk of chants of anti-semitism, and simultaneously, it is the same elephant that those for bolton dare not mention in order to conceal their unconditional, narcissistic love for the elephant….

in fact, it is my intuition that bush’s first post-election act–after saying he would be bi-partisan–mentioning this bolton was indeed a ‘nod’ to certain elephantine base members that they need not worry about the democrats bringing some more level-headedness to world affairs where the elephant may be involved.

    just an idea…

Schumer and Clinton Pressed To Reappoint Bolton
By RUSSELL BERMAN, Staff Reporter of the Sun
    July 26, 2006

“As the Senate prepares to consider anew the nomination of John Bolton as United Nations ambassador, Senators Schumer and Clinton are facing increasing pressure from pro-Israel groups to renounce another Democratic filibuster in light of the escalating war in the Middle East.

The Foreign Relations Committee is set to hold a hearing on the nomination tomorrow, and several Democrats on the panel have voiced their unswerving opposition to Mr. Bolton’s nomination.

From New York’s senators, however, there has been nothing but silence. Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Clinton voted to block Mr. Bolton’s confirmation a year ago, but they have not declared their positions this time around.

Aides to both senators did not respond to repeated inquiries about the Bolton nomination over the last three days.

One Jewish leader may have an idea why. The president of the Zionist Organization of America, Morton Klein, said yesterday that “important friends” of Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Clinton have confided to him that the senators are “seriously reconsidering” their position on Mr. Bolton. Mr. Klein, in a telephone interview, would not disclose the names of the friends, saying they had not given him permission to do so.”

  11. james risser Says:

    goods,

a friendly warning: the subject of israeli zionism, their powerful special interest groups, and their tremendous influence in the democratic party and in democratic/progressive thinktanks are rather taboo subjects for discussion in public fora lest one be considered an anti-semite.

this fight will be fought over, as the original post indicates, anything BUT such taboo subjects.

you will see some interesting theatre if you watch closely over the next month or so. no one will say what they mean, deals will be made, scapegoating, surrealism, denials, deafening silence…the delicate dance over the burning coals has begun.

I don’t give a hoot who thinks I’m anti-Semetic, facts are facts when it comes to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Arab families. The root cause of most of the hatred of the US stems from our blind obescience to Israel.
I don’t care how much money gets privately donated to the state of Israel, our tax dollars shouldn’t line their pockets as well.

    Ok!

    That was hard.

    We better try again……

    OK!

Well….forget about it….something is still weird with the re-nomination of Bolton.

Bolton *might* have some support which will be packaged for consumption by the Carville wing of the DNC as bipartisonship.

Schumer Says Bolton Won’t Face Filibuster
    By RUSSELL BERMAN
    Staff Reporter of the Sun
    July 31, 2006

A Democratic filibuster of John Bolton’s nomination as United Nations ambassador is “unlikely,” Senator Schumer said yesterday.

Mr. Schumer supported an effort last year to block Mr. Bolton’s nomination from gaining a full Senate vote, but he confirmed that he is considering changing his position.

New York’s senior senator said he was weighing Mr. Bolton’s backing of Israel against his unwillingness to work with other countries at the United Nations. “There’s a good part of Bolton. He’s been a staunch and very good defender of Israel,” Mr. Schumer said on CNN’s “Late Edition.” “There’s a bad part of Bolton. He seems to have a ‘go it alone’ attitude at a time when we need the nations of the world on our side. We’ve seen that in Iran and North Korea.”

Mr. Schumer said he had not made a final decision on which way to vote and that a lot of Democrats were also contemplating their position. The Democrats would need the support of 41 of their 45 members in the Senate to block Mr. Bolton’s nomination. Three Democrats crossed over to oppose a filibuster last year, meaning that a shift of even a few senators would signal Mr. Bolton’s confirmation. “I think that if you count the votes, a filibuster is unlikely,” Mr. Schumer said.

    [snip]

Both Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Clinton have made statements strongly supporting Israel and the Bush administration’s position on the Israel- Hezbollah war, and they have faced increasing pressure from Jewish groups to show their backing by voting to confirm Mr. Bolton. The Senate will have a recess next month, and a vote could take place in September.

  17. Dog_named_Boo Says:

I can tell you why. Because everything this current Administration trys to overhaul turns into an utter disaster.

Boltons job, a I understand it, is mainly to ‘overhaul’ the UN, as Norquist wants to drown the government while enriching himself

We need only look at Halliburton/Bechtel/KBR and the screw job privatization really is for the taxpyer.. The Donut Hole, The war profiteering, the failure to find Osama, the cherry picked intelligence.

It is because he is part of the larger problem, Bolton is part o the group or really realy bad ideas..Capice?

I don’t know about yall but I am really tired of the skirmishes and wars over the same things over and over. They never seem to learn.

#18, Dog_named_Boo: We need only look at Halliburton/Bechtel/KBR and the screw job privatization really is for the taxpyer

In addition to stuffing the coffers of the Halliburton/Bechtel/KBR (i.e. companies that HATE big government but LOVE big government tax dollars), the Bush admin in direct response to the horrific attacks of 9/11, inadvertently fathered a Shiite fundamentalist democracy in Iraq which chants “Death to Israel”, “Death to America” and has a long long history of being pro-axis of evil (Iran) and pro-Hezbollah.

Al Dawa and the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution of Iraq are loving the fact that Bush financed their decades old dream of transforming Iraq into a Shiite fundamentalist republic.

Bush’s $400 billion gift to the Al Dawa and the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution of Iraq is one that is going to keep hurting Americans for a long long time.

What? Tony Snow is trying to convince the American people that John Bolton has a great chance to be nominated as our U.N. Ambassador? Is Snow on crystal meths? Instead of punishing the United States and other successful Western economies, WHY don’t we encourage the the many poverty stricken nations to throw out their “culture of corruption” governments and adopt a capitalist approach. Encouragement can take monetary form - when Third World despots can’t get their grubby hands on the $$, economic and agricultural advisory groups, assistance with infrastructure and private property rights. Gee, I think the new spirit of bi-partisanship might be working….

  31. james risser Says:

among the most offensive tactics of bolton, not listed in the three by tp, is giving cover to the bush war-crimes committed throughout the planet. read this:

The United States aims to secure agreements “with every country in the world” guaranteeing immunity for its citizens from any prosecution from the new International Criminal Court (ICC), and will cut off military aid to countries which do not comply.

In an uncompromising defense of Washington’s decision to shun the court, Under Secretary of State John Bolton announced yesterday that the US has already reached so-called Article 98 exemption agreements, under the Rome statutes setting up the ICC, with 70 countries; 50 of them among the ICC’s 90 signatories.

Speaking at the conservative thinktank, the American Enterprise Institute, Mr Bolton also accused the European Union of imposing an “unfair choice” on aspirant members by insisting they do nothing to weaken the authority of the ICC. This made it harder for these countries to reach exemption deals with the US, he complained.

  32. Anais Says:

The operative word in relation to Bolton is “awfully.”

It would be easier for me to consider the charges of conservative intolerance and hate if I didn’t have to spend so much of my time covering my hears.

  34. james risser Says:

among the most offensive tactics of bolton, not listed in the three by tp, is bolton’s violation of the arm’s embargo in somalia by providing aid to somali warlords to fight the islamic coalition in mogadishu.

bolton lacks any credibility in the world community when he chastises a country for breaking an arm’s embargo one day and the state department comes out the next and leaks that the usa is supporting somali warlords, in opposition of an existing embargo.

our good ambassador also supplied arms to the haitians, in violation of the haitian arms embargo whilst he was the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs.

a State Department official admitted that the United States transported 2,657 weapons to Haiti last August to train and equip the Haitian National Police. These weapons included several M-14 rifles and sub-machine guns, as well as over 2000 revolvers and hundreds of pistols.

The names you were called are tame compared to what conservatives have dished out these last six years.

“Turd pusher” doesn’t compare with “terrorist-supporters,” and “nazi” doesn’t compare to “America-hating traitors,” so cry me a river.

If you try to push conservative spin here, expect to get called on it. We aren’t trying to push easily debunked spin on whatever wingnut blog you frequent, so toughen up, or get lost.

mighty aphrodite, #28 Thank you to all our veterans!

Why do you still spit in the face of all our veterans?

In case you have not heard, the US military just stuck a few of its own daggers in the back of Field Marshall von Rumsfeld.

    Btw…

In direct response to the horrific attacks of 9/11, the Bush admin with your support inadvertently fathered a burgeoning Shiite fundamentalist democracy in Iraq.

As of right now, several tens of thousands of lives and limbs have been destroyed and lost and $400 billion has been spent.

How many more oceans of blood and treasure must be spent for the pro-Hezbollah, `Death to America’ chanting, fundamentalist Islamic democratic republic in Iraq?

  38. Tobey Tall Says:

The US has vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip that killed 19 Palestinian civilians.

John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, described the text as “unbalanced” and “biased against Israel and politically motivated”.

He added that it did not provide an “even-handed characterisation” of the Israeli shelling of the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun that killed the 19 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

The text of the resolution, which was sponsored by Arab states, also condemned the firing of rockets by Palestinian fighters into Israel.

Ten of the council’s 15 members voted in favour and four -Britain, Denmark, Japan and Slovakia - abstained.

AMERICA YOU ARE OUT OF CONTROL

  39. james risser Says:

    tobey,

    the answer is ‘yes’.

the text, bolton states, is ‘biased against israel’. enough said.

the guardian covered the story of the massacre:

At least 19 Palestinians were killed and 40 wounded when five Israeli shells hit a row of houses in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun this morning.

The dead and injured - including nine children, four women and six men - were sleeping when the first shell hit at around 6am local time. Many of the victims were taken to hospital in their pyjamas.

In response to the attack, Hamas called for attacks on the US. “America is offering political, financial and logistic cover for the Zionist occupation crimes, and it is responsible for the Beit Hanoun massacre. Therefore, the people and the nation all over the globe are required to teach the American enemy tough lessons,” the Islamist group said in a statement sent to the Associated Press.

proving once again, that they hate us for our freedom, and our coincidental veto of such resolutions, has nothing to do with it.

and in other news, up has been shown to down; and down is indeed up….

The effort by Republicans was and is to thwart ANY effort to help minorities. Blatant RACISM!

Also, from comments a few months ago regarding residents of San Y’Sidro, the picture becomes more complete.

Dear James - I suppose if the terrorist “creatures” of Hezbollah didn’t hide their weapon caches among the civilian population, there MIGHT be a better than average chance fewer civilians would be killed…And of course having the poor Lebanese people victimized by Hezbollah rogues, with the backing of Iran & Syria IS perfectly acceptable to you?? I’m sure neither country is REALLY interested in annihilating Israel - or so I hear….

Your “reference” site reminds me of the tripe played on Arabic television to brain wash the vulnerable small children of the Arab world. Teaching those innocents that Jews are not human and are really pigs and monkeys is child abuse of a most hideous nature….

The United States will stand with Israel now and forever. Now and forever,” Pelosi avowed last year at the AIPAC meeting, never mind the seeming inexhaustible crimes against humanity. “There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. 49. Tobey Tall Says:

No! it’s time for the World to start acting.
It’s time for the World to tell the US to take its nose out of other nations politics. Over the last 60 years the US has proved that it cannot be trusted. The US is the World bully, not the World policeman. With its preempt approach, the US is a threat to North Korea,Iran,Venezuela,Cuba etc. Hasn’t the US had enough blood in the Middle-East. The US has only ever supported regimes they could influence and control regardless of democracy or human rights.

It’s time for the World to stand up to the US.Eventully China will rein-in US aggression and bullying, because it appears that Europe will not team up to do the job.

The UN was set up to be world policeman, but the US has managed to manipulate the UN for its own agender. When the US disagrees with the UN it uses it veto power or goes unilaterally.
The best the US can do for world stability is to concentrate on its own domestic problems, of which there are many, and keep its nose out of other sovereign nations.

Its time to stand up to the terrorist state, before they find anther excuse to invade or topple another nation and drag the WILLING with them.

  50. Jericho Says:

In other words: Bolton is the epitome of American-Anglo-Saxon-Israeli ‘diplomatic’ strategy since the end of WWII. There is no democracy in the UN, there is no international justice whatsoever, the Geneva conventions are not the only ones stepped on like they’re burning toilet paper. Corporations get all the rights, ordinary people get all the duties, thanks to money and the greed of so-called politicians. Many a time these ‘politicians’ knowingly deceive the public for pure personal gain while happily keeping up appearances. Evil has many faces. Some do evil because they ‘think’ everybody’s doing it, some do evil out of fear, some do evil because they ‘think’ it gives them profit but most evil is still done by good men and women who stood by and did nothing. In a just world, Bush, Bolton and all historical epitomes of this American-Anglo-Saxon-Israeli ‘diplomatic’ strategy should’ve already been expelled by the wise public, but thanks to the strategy, there is no such thing.
