Aw shucks! Russ is a great patriot and a fearless leader who has never failed to promote the Truth, despite it’s unpopularity at the time. I applaud his ongoing honesty, however, in that he again manifested that same degree of righteousness in not being swayed by public opinion to the contrary of his heart & soul. Bravo for you,Russ! No doubt your degree of candor & honesty will accomplish tremendous things in the Senate! You’ve got a huge job ahead…..best of luck to you, sir!

  2. Jeffrey Stewart says:

I would vote for Sen. Feingold for president before any other Democrat. Let us all remember that Sen. Clinton voted for the Military Commissions Act. For this reason alone she shouldn’t be the Democratic nominee.

  3. trueblue says:

Someone strong had better make themselves known, because there is no way in you-know-where Hillary will be able to pull it off.
Everyone loves Obama, but he’s just in his first term as Senator.
    Any other guesses?

  4. Democrat Rising says:

Russ may change his mind but for now I’m sure he has bigger fish to fry. It seems Dems are setting aside their personal agendas and focusing more on what the voters want, which is fine. Meanwhile Republicans can get relaxed again …and get caught in the act once again as they continue to commit fraud and crimes against humanity. Americans are waking up and in the next elections look for the Republican Monopolist party of corruption, oil, and war profiteering to lose additional seats in both houses, anti-trust legislation to be enforced, unions to gain in strength, and big corporations to get busted. Lets eliminate NAFTA and CAFTA while we’re at it and prevent the continuous outsourcing of American jobs and the destruction of the American family. GO DEMS!

  5. Jack says:

that really sucks. Russ voted against the war, against the tax cuts, against the Patriot Act — was a real leader. I guess I’m now leaning towards John Edwards, given that he’s the only passionate voice against the war after having said he was wrong to vote for it. Hillary’s like John McCain and obama has no experience.

  6. MinorRipper says:

The only way the Democrats lose in 2008 is IF they nominate Hillary. Let’s face it folds, she is simply toxic, right or wrong, to a large percentage of the electorate. I am continually surprised by the ignoring and omission of the one person who could certainly derail the Hillary Express: Al Gore. He was shafted in 2000, was right on the war, and has been a true visionary on the environment. He sits on the board of Apple, are we in store for an Ipod like product introduction?

major bummer! Russ is the man!

  8. trueblue says:

    Great article, Minor Ripper.

  9. Jason M. Hendler says:

I hate to say that I told you so, but I told you so ….

ALL the talk this Sunday is moderation and conservatism – absolutely no use of the word liberal other than Dems insisting they won’t be liberal.

You have been used – I hope they bought you dinner first.

  10. Sharon Cox says:

Well, since there isn’t much going on this morning I will weigh in…How about Gore/Obama or Edward’s/Obama…..I do think on the job training would be a good thing for Obama and then he could run for 2 term’s right after the first 2 term’s with one of the other guy’s…Wanted Finegold but if he isn’t running that’s done….Hillery will not win if she run’s, I would not vote for her at this point because she has been for the war…

Just watch how quickly bush and company are back on the campaign trail..See also how bush will appear to go along with the Dem’s and yet pull even worse deed’s than in the past, especiely between now and January…..Blessings…Peace

  11. Jeffrey Stewart says:

I take it the right wingnuts are still smarting over the election.

In the words of Stephen Colbert, what’s the weather like up your own ass?

  12. DieNowForPeace says:

Too bad, but he’d make a great VP candidate…

    Barack/Feingold ‘08

  13. free says:

Don’t get me wrong, I love Feingold but in this political climate he has no chance of winning in ‘08. The midterm elections showed that the electorate is moderate, not liberal or conservative, and that if someone as “liberal” as Feingold ran, he wouldn’t make it past Iowa. That’s unfortunate because he’s a good guy but Democrats are better running a more moderate candidate who atleast has a chance of winning. Also, I wouldn’t count out Hillary. She constantly pulls the Upstate NY vote, which is overwhelmingly Republican, therefore, while she is poiarizing to liberals and conservatives, everyone else in the middle seems to be pretty fond of her.

  14. wv voice of reason says:

As much as I would like to see russ Feingold run for president, I think he is sorely needed in the Senate. Just because the Dems are in control, doesn’t mean they will do what is necessary for a major course correction. Don’t forget for a minute how many of them voted for Bush’s nominees and policies and refused to filibuster when it might have made a difference. How many of them were willing to censure our war criminal president? How many of them called for Rumsfeld’s resignation? And don’t ignore the fact that Schumer, et. al. are already trying to marginalize Dean’s 50 State Strategy, as well as the grassroots and netroots, while patting themselves on the back for their “great victory for moderates”.

what’s that about?… OBAMA sound too close for comfort to you?

  16. Fools in the GOP says:

He would be one of the best President’s in America’s history. He would end corpoarate control of our government. And that is the problem, the corporate owned media would do everything possible to destroy his campaigning. Voters would have to be much smarter than they are for him to have a chance of getting elected.

  17. Dog_named_Boo says:

Russ Russ Russ, I am somewhat dissappointed.

But the Dems have the houses, so maybe you are better off there.

  18. Karim says:

It’s a shame that Sen. Feingold has decided not to run. He would have been an excellent president. But I agree with his thinking, and besides, he may change his mind and run in 2012. As a side note, #2, Clinton voted for the Patriot Act, not the Military Commissions Act.

  19. New Prog says:

This really sucks. Russ is awesome. Oh well I still am hoping for the Obama/Clinton, or vice versa ticket. Also it would be funny to see a Pelosi/Reid ticket…

  20. New Prog says:

    Jason… WRONG!!

This was not a victory for conservatism, for if it was Pelosi would NOT be Speaker of the House. This is a victory for moderates AND liberals. In my state(WI) LIBERAL Steve Kagan beat the snot out of his opponent (John Gard). Gard was a big time conservative and if CONSERVATISM actually proveiled in this election he should have won easily. Secondly conservatism is dieing off, if you look at exit polls from November for people under the age of 34 you will see a larger number of people voting Dem than Rethuglican. In twenty years the Republican party will only consist of a few mildly retarded old farts such as yourself…

  21. katy says:

ugh… i wish clinton would be left out of it…
much as i think she could possibly make a good president, her candidacy would further divide the country – at least this soon…

i was surprised friday, on maher, when asked about a “dream candidate”, most brought up a clinton, 1 for bill, 2 for hillary (i think)…
it was surprising for the fact that there are so many great options and they are still stuck on a clinton…

my own wish would be EDWARDS/OBAMA … and i only put obama in the vp position because i think edwards deserves his 2nd chance… NOT because of obama’s inexperience – i tend to think of that as a PLUS… so, really, i’d take either of them – they would be a great team…

  22. ShamRockNRoll says:

Russ Feingold is the best hope for the progressive movement… I am really dissapointed.

I know there may well already be diaries here and elsewhere discussing my decision to continue my important work in the Senate and not run for President in 2008, but I wanted everyone in the online community to hear from me directly.

Don’t count Barack Obama out. All GWB ever did before being forced on us as president was be the governor of Texas.

Obama has more experience in his baby finger than GWB has NOW.

  25. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I’m disappointed as well. He’s the first Dem running for President that I was really excited about working with his campaign locally. However, he’s a smart guy and if he thinks he’d rather commit his energy 100% to the Senate, he’s got my support there as well. Terrific person, and a staunch defender of the Bill of Rights and our civil liberties.

  26. Ashley says:

I was terribly disappointed when I read his letter this morning. I was behind him 100%. He’s the closest thing to an honest politician there is in this era.

  27. Marie says:

Put me on the side of those who are disappointed. He was my first choice!

  28. Jake says:

I wish Feingold were running. I REALLY wish he will change his mind before 2008. If the only candidates are people like Clinton, Gore, Edwards, and Kerry, just expect me to vote independent.

  29. Wisco says:

    Disappointing.

On the bright side, he didn’t rule out serving in a dem administration. Most of the pieces I’ve seen interpretted this as ‘Russ for VP,’ but if I had my choice, I think he’d be one of the finest Attorneys General we’ve ever had.

  30. Jeffrey Stewart says:

    #18. I stand corrected.

  31. Tracy says:

I am very disappointed the Russ isn’t going to run. Great entertainment opportunity lost.

  32. Badger says:

    1. Wisconsin has the wealthiest senator (Herb Kohl) and the poorest senator ..Russ Feingold.
    2. In Wisconsin Feingold got about a million more votes than John Kerry in 2004.
    3. Every time I listen to Feingold ( he is on Wisconsin Public Radio and in every county in the State answering questions regularly) I find myself agreeing with him, even if I didn’t start out that way.
    4. He is probably too honest to be elected president, and the senate would suffer without his voice. i could see him as attorney general…what rights we have left would be well protected.

  33. Kurt says:

Russ Feingold was my #1 choice for President in 2008. I guess now it’s up to Keith Olbermann in ‘08. (Yes, you read that right) so now my dream ticket is Obama/Olbermann ‘08!

    Hillary is so past tense.
