“The South African parliament on Tuesday approved new legislation recognizing gay marriages — a first for a continent where homosexuality is largely taboo,” the AP reports. “When we attained our democracy, we sought to distinguish ourselves from an unjust painful past, by declaring that never again shall it be that any South African will be discriminated against on the basis of color, creed culture and sex,” Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula told the National Assembly.
They waited for that old white guy to die first.

Kinda sad, that in over 200 years the US itself has not fully acheived that same objective.
November 14th, 2006 at 3:55 pmAnd so we slide further back on the list of backwards-ass countries….
November 14th, 2006 at 3:59 pmYup in 100 years people will look back in disbelief that we ever discriminated like this. Just like with suffrage and slavery.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:05 pmI think it’s particularly poignent that women conservatives are so against this. It’s wasn’t very long ago that women were treated the same way in society, and still are discriminated against in less obvious ways.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:07 pmGood for them! We’re still here with the dim bulbs who think gays will cease to be gay if we refuse to afford them civil rights.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:10 pmBarely 15 years after apartheid’s walls came crashing down in South Africa, and already they are more progressive than America. Unreal.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:20 pmSheesh. South Africa is smoking the US in civil rights. Pretty incredible.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:21 pmWhat were the reasons women used to be unable to vote? Have those reasons come true now that women vote?
What are the reasons gays can’t marry? Will those reasons come true if they are allowed to marry?
November 14th, 2006 at 4:27 pmAFRICAN AMERICAN CURCHES! Wake up…everytime I see some fire and brimstone brother yell from the pulpit about gay marriage or just gays period I think, “Boy that GAY MARRIAGE is tearing up the hood.” Just look at all the single mothers who lost their potential husbands to other men….GET REAL We have too many REAL problems to focus on that.

November 14th, 2006 at 4:39 pmHuhhhhh?
November 14th, 2006 at 4:47 pmForTruth, I will ensure that they don’t pass a bill to allow same-sex marriages, even if I have to protest.
November 14th, 2006 at 4:52 pmIt’s wasn’t very long ago that women were treated the same way in society, and still are discriminated against in less obvious ways.

We women can sometimes be our own worst enemy. *sigh*
November 14th, 2006 at 5:02 pmIt’s official. The USA is now the village idiot of the world. When South Africa, a nation that relatively recently had no rights for blacks can beat us to legalizing same-sex marriages, we can no longer call ourselves the most progressive country in the world.
Every argument against gay marriage, you can substitute your favorite minority or women or non-christian for the word “gay” and it would make as much sense. It’s been tried before. It fails because in the final analysis, you can’t prove that Mr and Mr (or Mrs and Mrs) Gay down the street are going to be a threat to anyone…. anywhere simply because they are married and enjoy all the legal benefits that hetero’s do.
Get down off the cross. You’re blocking the light.
November 14th, 2006 at 5:03 pmForTruth, I will ensure that they don’t pass a bill to allow same-sex marriages, even if I have to protest.

Please do go to south africa and protest.
November 14th, 2006 at 5:04 pmhahaha

Do tell, Daryll! What’s the plan?
I don’t normally respond to you because you are one crazy sad ole f*cka, but I’m intrigued… How would you protest?

Yeah, hypocrites with vaginas are just as bad as hypocrites with Bibles…
November 14th, 2006 at 5:41 pmDaryll didn’t you also pray to GOD that the GOP would retain congress?
Maybe Daryll you shoukd think about that.
I told you GOD does not play politics.
Yet you will not listen to the Adepts, why?
November 14th, 2006 at 6:01 pmOnly Liberals protest, remember Daryll?
November 14th, 2006 at 6:02 pmGoddamn, where did f*cking Daryll go? I know he ain’t f*cking.
The one time I ask him a question…
November 14th, 2006 at 6:28 pmZooey it is not worth the effort
Daryll is impossible, he’s been brainwashed by his gods Falwell, and Robertson. We just need to wait for crazy christian conservatives like him to die off…

I’m just so sure Daryll’s answer would have been fascinating…not coherent or anything, but fascinating…
November 14th, 2006 at 8:26 pm…the real reason many people are against things like this (at least in the US) is the fear that God will punish the United States for ‘indulging in sodomy’, just as Sodom and Gomorrah were.
November 14th, 2006 at 8:43 pmDestardi,
If God was going to punish the US, it already would have happened.
November 14th, 2006 at 8:51 pmIf God was going to punish the US, it already would have happened.

Um, what do you call the last 6 years, if not punishment?
November 14th, 2006 at 8:59 pmOops, I forgot to add — I don’t think he’s pissed at us because of “teh gays.”
November 14th, 2006 at 9:03 pmUm, what do you call the last 6 years, if not punishment?
Comment by Zooey —
Yeah guess thats a good point, the last 6 years have been quite the punishment.

Unfortunately a lot of people (Darryl?) still think that women and blacks ought to be second class citizens…
Zooey, you’re on a roll! I want Darryl to come back for another pants-kicking! Whoo hoo!
November 14th, 2006 at 11:46 pmI wish that people in the U.S. would understand that allowing religion and religious beliefs to dictate our freedoms is, by definition, the furthest thing from freedom.
November 15th, 2006 at 1:20 pmSad when South Africa is more progressive and better on basic human rights than the US is in some areas…sad indeed…
November 15th, 2006 at 3:04 pmSouth Africa proved once again that we have the greatest human rights laws and constitution in the world.Even so called free America can’t even see to it that all of it’s citizens are free from discrimination based on sex, religion and creed.
November 21st, 2006 at 3:28 amViva La South Africa! A model of humanity!
