Last week, in its first broadcast since Democrats took control of Congress and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld resigned, NBC’s Meet the Press exclusively featured non-Democratic Iraq war supporters, Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and John McCain (R-AZ).
Following the interviews, host Tim Russert noted, “And our viewers should know we extended invitations to the new Democratic leaders in the House and Senate, incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi [D-CA], Majority Leader Harry Reid [D-NV]. Both declined our invitation, but we hope they’ll be here on a future Sunday.” But as Media Matters pointed out:
There were, however, literally hundreds of other Democratic officials and candidates who had just taken part in a historic election, as well as several other Democratic leaders, who did not run as independents and did not appear on other Sunday-morning shows. And, yet, Meet the Press apparently stopped asking after being turned down by its top two choices.
This week, Meet the Press appears to have heeded the criticism they received. They announced yesterday that their guests this Sunday will be two Democratic Iraq war critics, Sens.-elect Jon Tester (D-MT) and Jim Webb (D-VA).

November 17th, 2006 at 2:45 pmWhat until the 37,000 lobbyist get hold of these two.

Shiny and huge. Hopefully he will use it for good not evil.
November 17th, 2006 at 2:45 pmWhy did Pelosi and Reid turn down the offer anyways? You would think that the leaders of the Dem party would want to be front and center proclaiming that they are pulling out of Iraq ASAP. Maybe it is the fact that both only paid lip service to the idea and won’t actually do a thing about Iraq…..

And people say I rarely add anything meaningful to the poltical discourse, yet here we are discussing the morality issues forced upon us due to anthropometric observations.

That’s funny I always thought DeLay looked like my bug exterminator.

November 17th, 2006 at 2:52 pmMaybe it’s because Cheeks McCain & Lips Leiberman have
faces made for radio?
You ‘gotta love Tester’s haircut. It’s right out of the ’50’s,
but projects leadership & no BS attitude.
The jury’s still out on Webb, in my opinion, but he’s surely
better than that racist Allen alternative.
Russert really softballed M & L last week.
Think he’ll get tougher with the Dem’s?
You mean , Russert is gone be fair and balance .I won’t believe it until he call for bushie’s impeachement . May be choir boy has to have some sex in it .
November 17th, 2006 at 3:00 pmWait until the 37,000 lobbyist get hold of these two.
November 17th, 2006 at 3:02 pmI’ll definitely be watching that. These two have a lot to offer the Senate.
November 17th, 2006 at 3:17 pmWe have to give props to Russert on this one. Why can’t he just get actual opposite viewpoints represented in ONE program?
November 17th, 2006 at 3:23 pm#13, because that would violate their formula. I always wonder about the title of that show, what press are they meeting anyway? Isn’t it more like Meet the Propaganda?
November 17th, 2006 at 3:35 pmBoth of these gentlemen will be great Senators. Giving the Democratic Party a new face and direction. Proud I worked for Jim Webb.
November 17th, 2006 at 4:00 pm#9- in fairness, the post does state that an offer was made and rejected. MtP stopped after *not* getting its first two choices.
Honsestly, MtP is second only to say Fox news, but in this case it seems the point of the interview was to get Iraq war supporters reaction to their overwhelming rejection. The only outlier of course being Lieberman. I still dont understand that one.
Anyway, Are we making a mountain out of a mole hill here?
November 17th, 2006 at 4:35 pmTESTER TIME!
I suspect that no Dem wanted to lend their credibility to Joe Liarman or McCain by appearing on the show with them. Good call, as far as I’m concerned.
November 17th, 2006 at 4:46 pmNancy and Harry turned you down timmy?….gee, I wonder why…their wise to you and NBC you dummy. I’ll watch Olbermann for the truth, thank you.
November 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmI don’t know why, but I keep trying to watch “Meet the Press”, but usually end up cursing and changing the channel to George Stephanopoulos. I’ll watch this Sunday, because I’m very curious about these two men and how they’ll fair in D.C. I think they’ll be a breath of fresh air. I do expect Russert to ask some annoying questions. Chris Matthews already has indicated that he expected the Democrats to come in and wave a magic wand and clean up everything. This, before they’re even sworn into office! He makes me so mad, and then he’ll say something completely reasonable. I think he’s bi-polar….Tim Russert is an out and out shill for the White House. I haven’t seen any redeeming thoughts come from him. He lets Cheney’s lies (even though they have a tape of his misdeeds from previous shows) flow like honey from the mouth of a bear without calling him out.
November 17th, 2006 at 5:08 pm[…] Timmeh’s gonna have Webb and Tester on Sunday. […]
November 17th, 2006 at 5:35 pmTester, Webb and Ted Koppel and Robin Wright of the WaPo. Li’l Timmy must have felt a lot of pressure.
November 17th, 2006 at 6:02 pmIt took Russert more than a week to figure out what plate tectonics had shifted beneath his Pundit-Pool®. We know that McCain and the Lieberdweeb will say anything at all. Let’s enjoy Timmy wrapping his head around statesmen who try to speak the truth.
I foresee a relapse of his thyroid condition.
November 17th, 2006 at 7:50 pmdemocrats should be boycotting US corporate media. leave pumpkin head and the rest of the corporate media bimbos to showcase nothing but the sicko retread loser republican cultists that they have been promoting for 25 years…let them have them. There are other outlets that democrats can show up in. Besides, other than the politcal insider junkies obsessed with the game, people are generally sick of politics for a while anyway.
November 17th, 2006 at 8:51 pm.
Timmeh is in for at least 6 weeks of a “world of hurt.” Apparently, he fell and broke his foot or ankle–his pal, “the phony cowboy” Imus was going on about that with Bob Scheiffer.
I have stopped watching his hideous program–he has demonstrated to me that he has forgotten where he came from. I remember when he and Matthews didn’t have 2 nickels to rub together.
November 17th, 2006 at 9:22 pmRead Webb’s opinion piece in the WSJ on 11.15.06.

This guy is one to watch. I’m proud that he’s my new senator!
November 17th, 2006 at 10:47 pmI can listen to Meet the Press on computer via c-span radio. I’m looking forward to Webb and Tester. I don’t think they suffer foolish questions gladly. We’ll see. I do like their support of the Middle Class, which has been suffering under Bush and the GOP.
