McCain Hires Key Falwell Staffer For Presidential Campaign»

McCain and FalwellIn 2000, John McCain called Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance.” Now, he has hired the debate coach from Falwell’s Liberty University, Brett O’Donnell, to advise him on his communications strategy. O’Donnell has been executing Falwell’s strategy to train scores of debaters to confront “the culture on moral default.”

Falwell said the hiring should not be considered an endorsement:

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, chancellor of the Lynchburg university, said he has not endorsed a candidate, and O’Donnell’s appointment should not be interpreted as a signal that he is backing McCain…”Senator McCain is getting a real winner, and I’m sure Brett will be a great help to him,” Falwell said. “He’s getting Brett at the peak of his production.”

McCain also delivered the commencement address at Liberty University this summer.

I think Hillary and McCain are nothing but the MSM’s creations. I know they have star power for now, but I think the veneer will wear thin before the Iowa caucuses. McCain has said too many things on camera that will come back to haunt him, and Hillary is a do-nothing moderate. Forget Guiliani: he has way too many skeletons in his closet. Women don’t like men who keep cheating on their spouses (plus, Bernard Kerkik is an albatross around his neck).

The problem with pandering is that it never goes over or fools anyone. Plus you end up pissing off those who previously liked you.
As a seasoned pol I would think McCain would know this. This is also a lesson unlearned by Hillary as well.
Pandering to the religious right looses McCain the support of the independents and moderate republicans. And the religious right can tell when someone is not for real and is just playing.
I see this as the nail for his presidential bid.

David Currie, executive director of Texas Baptists Committed, said he was “dumbfounded” by Falwell’s comments.

“I could not believe what I was hearing from a Christian minister,” said Currie, who holds a doctorate in Christian ethics from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Currie agreed with Gushee that the United States should hunt down terrorists, killing them if necessary to prevent further acts of terrorism.

“But Jerry Falwell is absolutely wrong in his theology and his politics to claim such actions should be done ‘in the name of Lord,’ that is, Jesus Christ,” he said. “Jerry Falwell’s remarks defame Christianity, my faith and the faith of most Americans. …

#11, Firefox: I’m not ridiculous, I’m serious. She wants to establish a Stalinist state. Wouldn’t you like that. Us Rightwingers thrown in camps and kill?

Reichvingers, who are so fervently fond of blood sacrifices, should go on their own volition to Iraq, i.e. the Shiite fundamentalist republic which they helped Pres. Bush inadvertently father in direct reponse to the horrific attacks of 9/11.

Tens of thousands of lives have been ruined and $400 billion has been spent on a Islamic fundamentalist state which has close and extremely long standing ties to Iran thanks to the Reichvingers.

The very least the Reichvingerscould could do for the USA is go live in the paradise (snicker) that they helped usher in.

BTW: The Badr Corps is also in need of canon fodder. You morons would be a great help and could give your lives to Iraq. Please think about about seriously.

  28. ProgressiveKen Says:

Well, that’s about right…we just had the Crisco Kid (Ashcroft)….

    What a bunch of WACKOS!!

I could see if nuts like Falwell could actually read biblical literature in Aramaic, Arabic, Hebrew, Syriac, etc.

    But he cannot.

    Falwell is not literate.

Falwell, nevertheless, claims to know what the Bible says?

    Make zero sense.

  30. Zep Tepi Says:

Karl Rove was impressed enough by the squad that he tapped Liberty coach Brett O’Donnell to prep George W. Bush for all three presidential debates in 2004. O’Donnell briefed the president on his nonverbal tics.

And George is still a bumbling boob that consistently lies!!!

Heckuva Job Brett, You learn that McCain real good ya hear!!!

  31. Quadrajet Says:

Firefox, Rudy doesn’t have a chance of getting past the right wing religious wackos that comprise your party’s ‘base’ - and man are they ‘base’, hehehehe - and getting the nomination. Especially if McCain is lickin’ Falwell’s boots this far out.

  32. Briseadh na Faire Says:

So, McCain has hired the debate coach from Falwell’s Liberty University, Brett O’Donnell, to advise him on his communications strategy.

Question: Will that make McCain a “master debater?”

  33. Zooey Says:

McCain wants to be president too desperately, which is demonstrated by his willingness to do ANYTHING to try to get there. The right wing WILL turn on him again. I won’t be surprised if he offs himself at some point.

  34. Zep Tepi Says:

Falwell, nevertheless, claims to know what the Bible says?

I doubt he does. If he did he wouldn’t be fleecing his flock for millions of dollars and using it for personal empowerment.

Falwells lust of money is the root of evil.

Both Hillary and McCain are so busy positioning themselves as something they’re not, I don’t think either of these phonies will play well against other candidates.

If you actually paid attention to what ‘the left’ is saying, you’d know we don’t particularly like Hillary, and are in fact pretty disgusted with her.
It’s almost funny how this chant from the Right, Hillary Hillary Hillary has been going on for years now, when the truth is a dozen folks would beat her out, from Al Gore to Russ Feingold to Wes Clark to Barack Obaama, fer Krissake.
The dittohead trolls don’t even know what their opponents’ positions are any more: all they know is what Rush and Hannity say they are–and the trolls rush over here to badmouth Hillary, misspelling the stuff they’ve only heard on the radio. And they think they’ve counted coup when they’ve badmouthed ‘our favorite.’
The real horror is not that there are racist xenophobic chickenhawks who got hit on the head with Atlas Shrugged at an early age–we’ve had those for a long time, It’s that there’s a whole pile of people who just listen to these right wing fabulists make stuff up. And so they make points against positions their opponents don’t hold, triumphantly trot out incorrect facts, and type LOL triumphantly when all we do is scratch our heads and wonder what’s wrong with them.

    The Heartbreak of Hastert-Limbaugh Syndrome

That’s a good point, pbg. It would be an interesting study to how early reading of Atlas Shrugged correlates with subsequent onset of HLS.

Per Sharon Cox, the symptomology includes:

soft hands, no neck, fat faced, doughboy, radical professed christian republican types

Perhaps Zooey can help us pull all this together.

  54. Tobey Tall Says:

True Democrats are back in power in the House and Senate after 12 years, but dramatic changes in basic U.S. foreign policy are unlikely, particularly in the “war on terror” and combating “Islamic radicalism”, on which there is a bipartisan consensus.

The de-ideologization of U.S. foreign policy into a more “realistic” mode is still a long way off. The “war team” — Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice – is still in the driver’s seat and has the veto power on war and peace issues; Democrats have yet to lay their hands on the steering wheel of their country’s international policies.

Reviewing U.S. voting records at the Security Council reveals the most recent veto as the 30th anti-Palestinian vote and the 42nd anti-Arab out of more than 80 U.S. vetoes.

Both Democrats and Republicans are expected to play politics more than they will plan policies until they settle the leadership dilemma in the 2008 election; the future of military occupations and peacemaking in the Middle East will have to wait until then

I SAY IMPEACH BUSH , GAIN THE STEERING WHEEL AND START ENGAGING NOW IN INTERNATIONAL POLITIC NOW

Well said pbg. Hillary is probably the one that convinced Bill to sign off on NAFTA and CAFTA which in my opinion was the biggest mistake Clinton ever made beyond anything the Republicans castigate him for. Ironically, the Republican Oil and War Profit Monopolists are very quiet about this point on Clinton’s record. But we all know thats what they really love him for…Outsourcing America. The first order of business with the new Congress and Senate should be to eliminate NAFTA and CAFTA…then as Tobey said, let the Impeachments begin.

You can help stop the Republicans from using the veto and the filibuster.

    Go to http://www.opensecrets.org

He will serve as the minority leader of the senate in 2007. Find his campaign contributors and list the ones that sell consumer products. Find their email addresses and phone numbers and fax numbers.

Send each of his campaign contributors the following message.

Get your CEO to tell Mitch McConnell: Do not use the filibuster nor let George W Bush use the veto or we will not buy your products ever again and we will tell everyone in this country not to buy your products.

Then tell Senator McConnell, do not use the filibuster nor allow Bush to use the veto or I will boycott your campaign contributors that sell consumer products.

It’s a shame because he at one time had integrity and, in joining ranks with corruption, has become corrupt himself.
